Sealed Systems Sealed Systems Sealed primary central heating systems are the most commonly used form of heating system throughout Europe and the rest of the developed world. Sealed central heating systems should not be confused with unvented mains pressure hot water systems, which apply only to the secondary hot water supply side of a combined heating and hot water system. From an installers viewpoint, therefore, there is no requirement to be ed or to notify any authority when fitting a sealed primary heating system. The ease of installation of a sealed system makes it particularly attractive to the installer, eliminating the feed and expansion tank and associated pipework, and thus reducing the risk of corrosion and noise in the system.

Essential Components and Location Note: Domestic sealed heating systems should take due of the following British Standards: BS 7074: Part 1: 1998 – “Application, selection and installation of expansion vessels and ancillary equipment for sealed water sytems – Part 1. Code of practice for domestic heating and water supply”. BS EN 12828: 2003 – “Heating systems in buildings – Design for water based heating systems”. The essential components for a sealed system are: • Diaphragm Expansion Vessel (complying with BE EN 13831: 2007 – “Closed expansion vessels with built in diaphragms for installation in water”) • Safety Valve (pressure relief valve) • Pressure Gauge • Filling Point (means for system filling, make-up and venting).

Expansion Vessels

The benefits of Nitrogen filled vessels Nitrogen, a dry inert gas used in the Reflex range of expansion vessels, improves the vessel’s life span by reducing corrosion inside the vessel, and prevents loss of pre-charge pressure. Nitrogen permeates through rubber slower than oxygen, is far less reactive to both steel and aluminium and does not degrade rubber prolonging the membrane life. Oxygen in compressed air permeates through the membrane, thus reducing the pre-charge pressure over time. During normal operation,

oxygen oxides the membrane in the vessel, causing under-inflation, but dry Nitrogen will maintain proper inflation pressure and will not corrode the inside of the vessel. It’s recognised in the industry that oxidative aging is one of the primary causes of decreased vessel life. Tests have shown that if vessels are inflated with nitrogen, there is a significant reduction in failure and increased vessel life.
