The following organizations are basic ways to create new architecture. Spaces must:

 Have specific functions or require specific forms  Are flexible in use and can be freely manipulated  Are singular and unique in their function or significance to the building organization

 Have similar functions and can be grouped into a functional cluster or repeated in a linear sequence

 Required exterior exposure for light, ventilation, view or access to outdoor spaces

 Must be segregated for privacy  Must be easily accessible The spatial organizations are:

E 1. Centralized – A central, dormant space about which a number of secondary spaces are grouped. It is a stable concentrated composition that consists of a number of secondary spaces grouped around a large, dominant, central space. a. The central unifying space of the organization is generally regular in form, and large enough in size to gather a number of secondary space above its form. b. The secondary spaces of the organization may be equivalent to one another in function, form, and size, and create an overall configuration. c. The secondary space may differ from one another in their form, size as a response to their individual requirements of function, relative importance, or context. This differentiation among the secondary spaces allows the form of a centralized organization to respond to varying conditions of its site.

2. Linear – A linear sequence of repetitive spaces, essentially a series of spaces. a. Usually the spaces are alike or dislike in size, form, and function. Either way, one side of the spaces has an exterior exposure. b. Spaces that are functionally or symbolically important to the organization can occur anywhere along the linear sequence and have their importance articulated by their size and form. c. The space’s significance can be emphasized by their location: at the end of the linear sequence, offset from the linear organization, or at the pivotal points of the segmented linear form. d. Curved and segmented forms of linear organization enclose a field of exterior space on their concave sides and orient their spaces toward the center of the field. On their convex sides, these forms appear to front space and exclude it form their fields. 3. Radial – A central space from which linear organizations of space extend in a radial manner. a. Radial combines elements of both centralized and linear organizations. I t consists of a dominant central space from which a number of linear b. The central space is usually regular in form. c. The central space creates a hub. d. Radiating arms can be different from one another and respond to their different requirements. e. A pinwheel organization is a pattern wherein the arms radial from the side of the regular central form.

4. Clustered – Spaces grouped by proximity or the sharing of a common visual trait or relationship. a. Consists of repetitive, cellular spaces that have similar functions, and share a common visual trait such as shape or orientation. b. Uses symmetry or axis to create c. 5. Grid – Spaces organized within the field of a structural or other three dimensional grid patterns or fields. a. Usually formed in architecture by skeletal structural systems. b. Grid designs can be added to, subtracted from, and layers upon and still maintain its grid identity. c. Grids can be created with rows or columns having one of two dimensions smaller or larger than the base grid. This creates a hierarchical set of differentiated modules. d. Grids can be transformed (rotated, split, or somehow interrupted) to accommodate natural forms in the plot.
