Historical Background By late afternoon of the second day of Unternehmen ?Wacht am Rhein? Peiper's first panzers had established a position on the edge of Stavelot. From their vantage point the Germans were able to see the entire area. One of the things they spotted, were American trucks rushing back and forth through Stavelot. It gave the impression that Stavelot was heavily defended, but in reality the vehicles were evacuating another large American fuel depot. Stavelot itself was defended by a handful of American engineers. The bridge at Stavelot was essential to Peiper, because the Amblève River formed an anti-tank barrier. Three tanks attempted to rush to the bridge, but a mine hit the lead vehicle. Sixty dismounted German grenadiers who ran forward to seize the bridge followed this attack, but they were stopped by defensive fire. The next day, the 18th of December, Peiper ed the vanguard at 0630 hrs that morning. He opened his attack on Stavelot with an artillery barrage that lasted until 0800 hrs. Then the German panzers started rolling towards Stavelot. The Kampfgruppe quickly reached the center of the village and found that the bridge was still intact. However tanks ed the American defense. A fierce tank battle broke out, which lasted two hours and was costly for both sides. The Germans maneuvered dexterously before slowly moving across the bridge at around 1000 hrs. The Germans crossed the bridge without trouble. Something had gone wrong for the American defenders, because engineers had prepared the bridge for destruction but it did not blow. The Germans byed the remains of the American defense and pushed on.

Conditions of Victory 6 Medals The bridge is a Temporary Objective Victory Medal for the German Player. Exit Medal rules are in effect for the German Player. The American player gets a medal if he can exit the supply truck unit (symbolically evacuating fuel supplies) off the exit marker on the right hand side of the board.

Special Rules Place a badges on the US Combat Engineer units [Troops 4] and the US Tank Destroyer unit [Troops 24]. Place a badge on the German Half-track unit [Troops 18] and on the Elite armor unit [Troops 2]. All German infantry are also Elite. No badges are thus required for them. Re-supply rules [Actions 24] are in effect for the German Half-track unit, but not the US Supply Truck [Troops 17]. Winter Combat cards are in effect [Actions 25].

The Allied player lays out the minefields. Optional Rules - Apply my Battle of Nations Command Rules United States - United States Army Overwhelming Fire - When US artillery is not in a Close Assault combat, and targets an enemy unit that is adjacent to a US Infantry unit, roll 1 extra dice. When the US player plays the Barrage or Air Power card, if one or more of the targeted units is adjacent to a US Infantry unit, roll 1 extra dice. Efficient Supply Lines - At the beginning of the game, before either side takes a turn, the US player may choose to discard any number of his available command cards. He then draws the same number of Command Cards into his hand to replace the discarded ones. - Wehrmacht Kampfgruppe [rule developed by jdrommel]- Once per game, two depleted German infantry units can form a Kampfgruppe. This may only occur if the number of figures is not more than four (ex : 1+1, 2+1, 2+2, 3+1). The dissolution of one unit (2 become 1) is not a medal for the Allied player. Only one unit can be activated to move towards the other unit and to form the Kampfgruppe. If this unit has the capacity to battle, it can battle in the same turn.
