Reishi Mushroom (Lingzhi) Fights Cancer & More The reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) is one of the most powerful tonics on Earth. In Chinese, it is also called the “ling zhi” mushroom, and it has been known for its healing power for thousands of years, including its ability to improve immune function, mental clarity, and longevity. Perhaps that is why reishi mushroom has also been called the “mushroom of immortality,” “the king of mushrooms,” and “the herb of spiritual potency.” It is one of the oldest mushrooms to be used medicinally. The famous herbalist Shen Nong first described the reishi mushroom in the Shu Dynasty over 2,400 years ago. Nong said, “if eaten customarily, it makes your body light and young, lengthens your life and turns you into one like the immortal, who never dies.” The term “ling zhi” was first recorded during the Han Dynasty of 206 BC to 9 AD. In 1881, Finnish fungus expert Petter Adolf Karsten named the reishi mushroom genus Ganoderma. It is derived from the Greek “ganos,” which means “sheen or shining.” Lucidum is Latin for “shining.” Like other disease-fighting mushrooms, reishi is an outdoor fungus that can often be found growing on decaying logs and tree stumps; it loves high, humid areas

that lack sunshine. Today, reishi are cultivated mostly in Zhejiang and Jiangxi, as well as other Chinese provinces.

How is Reishi Mushroom Used in TCM?

Throughout history in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), reishi mushroom was dried, sliced, boiled in hot water, and then steeped to make soup or tea. However, today, reishi products are made from boiling reishi several times at high pressure to allow for the active ingredients to be extracted in a tincture. In TCM practice, reishi mushroom is used to treat difficulty breathing, coughing, weakness, forgetfulness, insomnia, indigestion, and poor appetite. It also promotes production of qi and blood and treats lung deficiency, spleen deficiency, and heart dysfunction. The reishi mushroom has long been known as an adaptogenic herb, so it can help the body adapt to the negative effects of stress, including depleted energy, increased inflammation, various hormonal imbalances, and damaged blood vessels. In TCM, reishi mushroom influences lungs, liver, heart, and kidney channels.

How Reishi Mushroom Treats Cancer & More Over the past several decades, dozens of studies in China, Japan, the U.K., and the U.S. have found that reishi mushrooms’ antioxidant abilities can strengthen the body against many diseases—especially tumor growth and cancer. Reishi mushrooms contain several anticancer nutrients, including amino acids, beta-glucans, and antioxidants like triterpenoids and polysaccharides. Researchers believe that the water-soluble polysaccharides are highly responsible for reishi mushroom’s anti-tumor abilities. Triterpene compounds inhibit tumor invasion by limiting cancer cells from attaching to endothelial cells. Beta-glucans stop the spread and growth of cancer cells, while boosting the immune system. A review published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews in 2012 found that reishi mushrooms were a promising anticancer treatment, with chemotherapy and radiotherapy patients responding positively when treated in combination with reishi mushroom, rather than receiving radiotherapy and chemotherapy only. In another study, published in PLOS One in 2013, researchers suggested that reishi mushroom is a potential natural treatment for inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) and other cancers. IBC is an aggressive form of breast cancer that manifests without a typical tumor mass. For the study, severely immunodeficient mice that were injected with IBC cells and treated with the reishi mushroom showed reduced tumor weight and growth. Besides its anticancer abilities, reishi mushroom has other mechanisms of action that help it fight a variety of other conditions and diseases:

How TCM Treats Metabolic Syndrome Metabolic syndrome is not just one health problem; it is a metabolic disorder that involves a cluster of conditions, or a combination of three or more health issues, including high blood-sugar levels and insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and high triglyceride levels. Needless to say, people with metabolic syndrome have a body that’s in a state of serious dysfunction. Metabolic syndrome also increases your risk of possible deadly health issues, such as diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. In fact, 23% of adults currently suffer from metabolic syndrome, including 40% of adults over the age of 60. Also, about 85% of Type 2 diabetics have metabolic syndrome.

Symptoms & Causes of Metabolic Syndrome Metabolic syndrome is sometimes called “syndrome X,” “dysmetabolic syndrome,” “insulin-resistance syndrome,” or “metabolic disease.” It is scary that most disorders associated with metabolic syndrome have no symptoms other than a large waist circumference—at least 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men. When fat is located around the waist rather than the hips, you increase your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. If you suffer from very high blood sugar, symptoms may include increased urination, increased thirst, blurry vision, and fatigue. Normal fasting blood sugar is less than 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). High blood sugar is another risk factor of metabolic syndrome, and it may go unnoticed unless you get your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. Other metabolic-syndrome risk factors include blood pressure of 130/85 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) or higher, a triglyceride level of 150 mg/dL or higher, and HDL cholesterol of less than 50 mg/dL for women and less than 40 mg/dL for men. Other possible causes of metabolic syndrome include a lack of physical activity, gallstones, sleep apnea, and a history of cardiovascular disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

How TCM Treats Metabolic Syndrome Type 2 diabetes and obesity are the two major diseases associated with metabolic syndrome. In the ancient 2000-year-old Chinese text Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Thearch’s Inner Classic), obesity is the result of overeating, and diabetes is a Xiaoke disease, which is a consequence

of obesity. Xiaoke-disease complications include carbuncle, foot gangrene, and stroke. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, Xiaoke results from yin deficiency with dryness-heat. As a result, the treatment of diabetes focuses on evacuating fire (heat) from the body and replenishing yin (fluid). In the treatment of metabolic syndrome, Chinese herbal medicine, tongue analysis, diet, and exercise in the form of tai chi and qigong can all help bring balance to the entire body. Let’s take a look at the role that each play in a metabolic-syndrome treatment plan.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is excellent for metabolic syndrome. Research published in the journal Endocrine, Metabolic & Immune Disorders – Drug Targets in 2009 showed that common Chinese herbs are quite effective for metabolic syndrome. The research reviewed 25 traditional Chinese herbs for their potential activity in the treatment of metabolic syndrome. The review focused on three herbs in particular: ginseng, a major active compound from Rhizoma coptidis called “berberine,” and bitter melon. Each is responsible for regulating lipid and glucose metabolism, which has a positive effect on weight management. Ginseng is one of the most popular herbs in TCM. Panax ginseng (Asian ginseng) and Panax quinquefolium (American ginseng) are widely proven to be effective against various metabolic-syndrome factors due to their anti-obesity, anti-oxidation, insulin sensitization, and antihyperglycemia abilities. The ginseng-specific saponins (ginsenosides) are widely considered to be the key bioactive compound in the metabolic activities of ginseng. Rhizoma coptidis was first recorded as a healing herb as early as 200 A.D. Berberine is its major bioactive compound. In particular, berberine is a hypoglycemic agent and has anti-obesity and anti-dyslipidemia abilities. As a result, berberine can induce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor expression, suppress adipogenesis, inhibit mitochondrial function, activate the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway, and stimulate glycolysis. This is very important in reducing the major risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome. Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) is also called “bitter gourd,” and it is a popular herb and vegetable in China. How is bitter melon effective in the treatment of metabolic syndrome? It is able to decrease blood sugar and lipids in both diabetic and normal animals. It may also enhance insulin sensitivity, protect beta-cells, and decrease oxidative stress. Bitter melon is also known for a polypeptide with a potent hypoglycemic effect.

Tongue Analysis

In TCM, the tongue is seen as a map of the body, and the tongue’s coating and color are thought to reflect a person’s current state of health. Tongue diagnosis also plays a key role in meridians and conditions of the organs. A study published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2016 found that metabolic syndrome patients have a white coating on the tongue that differs from patients without metabolic syndrome.

Tai Chi & Qigong

Movement and regular exercise are very helpful for metabolic-syndrome sufferers. A 30-minute daily walk is a good start to keep blood and qi moving in the body. Tai chi and qigong can also help strengthen qi energy for the organ systems, while increasing circulation of blood and qi. A small Australian pilot study once suggested that a 12-week tai chi and qigong training program resulted in significant improvements of four metabolic-syndrome indicators: systolic and diastolic blood pressure, bodymass index (BMI), insulin resistance, and glycosylated hemoglobin levels. It also reduced stress and depressive systems and improved overall vitality and mental health. Another study published in the journal EvidenceBased Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2015 found that both tai chi and walking produced moderate weight loss and significantly improved fasting blood sugar and waist circumference.

Diet

A diet that is rich in organic and whole foods is also very important in the treatment of metabolic syndrome. It is best to avoid foods that can increase the risk of metabolic syndrome—especially processed foods, artificial sweeteners, trans fats, diet sodas, refined sugar and carbohydrates, and alcohol. Instead, some of the top foods that prevent and treat metabolic syndrome include omega-3-rich foods like wild-caught fish; dark leafy greens like spinach and kale; fruits like apples, oranges, and pomegranates; whole grains like brown rice and

quinoa; and legumes like lentils, chickpeas, and kidney beans.

Other Natural Treatments for Metabolic Syndrome What other natural methods complement the treatment for metabolic syndrome? Other herbal supplements used for metabolic syndrome include maca root, spirulina, and holy basil. Quitting smoking can go a long way toward decreasing major health concerns for metabolic syndrome, including stroke and other heart problems. Essential oils that help regulate blood-glucose levels and promote weight loss include cinnamon, ginger, and grapefruit.11-19 n

It is best to purchase reishi powder from a reputable company, because some forms may be stronger or contaminated in rare cases. Some possible reactions may include skin rashes, bloody stools, nosebleeds, stomach upset or strong indigestion, itchiness in the nasal area, an itchy or dry throat, and a dry mouth. As a precaution, if you intend on using reishi mushroom while breastfeeding or pregnant, speak with your doctor. It is also advised that you avoid reishi if you just underwent surgery; have had any type of bleeding disorder; have trouble with blood clotting; or take blood thinners, blood pressure medications, immunosuppressant medications, or chemotherapy drugs.1-10 n

Herbal Formula for Reduction of Migraine Frequency If you’ve had a migraine headache, you know how debilitating it can be. They are intense and painful and often accompanied by vision problems, nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light. The incapacitating pain from a migraine may last a few hours or up to several days. Major migraine triggers include physical or emotional stress, allergies, tiredness, smoking, dehydration, alcohol, and hormonal triggers like menopause or taking birth-control pills. It is estimated that six percent to 18% of adults suffer from frequent migraines. A migraine can be masked with a painkiller; however, Chinese medicinal herbs offer an effective alternative treatment. A randomized controlled study found that the Chinese herbal medicine zhengtian capsule was as effective as the migraine drug flunarizine for decreasing the frequency of migraine attacks. For the study, 360 patients received either flunarizine or zhengtian capsule for a 12-week period. The zhengtian capsule group experienced a 50% or greater reduction in migraine-attack frequency during the treatment compared with the drug at the week-12 mark and at the end of the four-week follow-up period. Zhengtian capsule was very safe, while flunarizine was linked with weight gain.22-5 n

What Is the Etiology of Disease? Etiology is the study of the cause of disease, and disease is classified from symptom-complexes. A symptom-complex never occurs without a reason. Symptom-complexes reflect pathological changes within the body. However, pathological changes occur due to pathogenic factors. The study of etiology within traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is, therefore, the study of the factors that cause symptom-complexes. In TCM, the etiology of disease and imbalance is the study of pathogenic factors and how they can negatively impact and cause disharmony within the body. Understanding how these pathogenic factors affect the body can help the traditional Chinese practitioner trace the cause of disease. The Synopsis of the Golden Chamber was written in the third century. It attributed the two causes of disease to three “injuries.” The First Injury was an injury to the channels from pathogenic or climatic factors that could invade internal organs. The Second Injury was an injury to the body’s surface from pathogenic factors that could invade the nine bodily orifices, the four extremities, and the vessels, eventually interfering with blood flow. The Third Injury type is a mixed category that includes causes such as wounds, animal or insect bites, and intemperate sexuality. Three causes were eventually developed into “the theory of three causes of disease.” The three causes of disease would later be known as endogenous, or the internal pathogenic factors; exogenous, or external pathogenic factors; and pathogenic factors that are neither exogenous nor endogenous. The exogenous or external pathogenic factors are influenced by the six climatic factors. The seven emotions are the primary source of internal or endogenous disorders. There are also causes of disease classified as “neither exogenous nor endogenous.”

The Six Climatic Factors

The climatic factors are also called the “six qi,” and it is these factors that correspond to normal seasonal changes and act under normal conditions. Normally, the six qi will not attack the body or cause disease; however, when the six qi become excessive or abnormal under extreme environmental conditions, or if the body is too weak to adapt to these changes, the six qi can become six excessive pathogenic factors that can destroy the physiological equilibrium of the human body and, therefore, lead to disease. That being said, disease is often the result of one or more factors that invade the body and cause disease.

1. Wind

Wind is associated with spring. It primarily affects the lungs and liver. Wind occurs in the body like it would in the environment, as one moment symptoms arise and the next you’re fine. Arthritis is a good example of a wind disease, where migratory pain in the bone creates arthritic pain. Wind also sometimes causes abnormal movements like dizziness, tremors, or convulsions. Common symptomcomplexes of wind include wind-cold, exogenous wind, wind-warmth, wind-dampness, wind-heat, and endogenous wind. Wind is also classified as a yang pathogenic condition.

2. Cold

Cold stops movement and warmth and makes tissues contract. It corresponds with winter, and it can affect the kidneys, lung, spleen, and stomach. Common symptoms include headaches, chills, a dislike of cold things, body aches, and abdominal pain. The symptom-complexes associated with cold include superficial exogenous cold, interior exogenous cold, endogenous cold, and wind-colddampness with predominant cold. Cold is considered to be a yin evil qi pathogenic condition.

3. Heat

Heat appears only in hot summer conditions, and it is classified from exogenous or external factors. It is associated with the lungs, liver, and stomach. Heat is a yang pathogenic condition. Common symptoms include dizziness, increased thirst, perspiration, fever, overflowing pulse, and excessive sweating. The symptom-complexes associated with heat include heatstroke, damp-heat, and exposure to summer-heat.

4. Dryness

Dryness occurs in autumn, and it has the tendency to deplete bodily fluids to cause dryness. It will mostly affect the lung and kidney organs. Common symptoms include fluid depletion, scanty urine, constipation, and dry mouth, tongue, lips, throat, or nose. The symptom-complexes include endogenous dryness, exogenous cool dryness, and exogenous warm dryness.

5. Dampness

Dampness prevails in late summer, but it can occur in any season. Dampness is a yin pathogenic factor that disrupts the normal flow of qi, including yang qi. The main organ that it affects is the spleen, and common symptoms include feeling heavy and turbid, as well as diarrhea, ascites, and edema. The symptom-complexes associated with dryness include exogenous dampness, endogenous dampness, and wind-dampness with predominant dampness.

6. Fire

Fire is similar to heat because it comes from hot conditions. That being said, unlike summer heat, fire can occur during any season. Fire has a yang pathogenic factor and will appear mostly in the head. The organs that are most affected include the lungs, liver, and stomach. Common fire symptoms include a high fever, convulsions, rigidity in the cervical spine, coma, and internal hemorrhaging. Symptom-complexes associated with fire include preponderant yang endogenous fire, deficient yin endogenous fire, and exogenous fire.

The Seven Emotions

The interaction of emotions with the physical body is essential within TCM. Emotional activities are related to internal-organ function. The seven emotions cause disease through disturbances of the normal descending and ascending flow of qi. Each of the seven emotions corresponds to a zang organ and represents a specific symptom-complex.

1. Anger

The emotion anger is associated with the liver, and qi rises and rushes upward when anger is an issue. As a result, symptoms include heavy head sensations, light feet sensations, red eyes, headaches, a red face, deafness, ringing in the ears, dizziness, and pain in the ribs. Anger can also affect the spleen and produce indigestion, a lack of appetite, and diarrhea.

2. Joy

The emotion joy is connected to the heart, and joy-related emotions are caused by too much stimulation or excitement or a sudden shock to the system. As a result, heart imbalances can lead to anxiety, palpitations, and insomnia.

3. Worry

Excess worry depletes qi of the spleen and causes chronic fatigue and digestion disturbances. A weak spleen cannot efficiently turn food into qi, and the lung fails to extract qi from the air efficiently.

4. Sadness or Grief

Pensiveness can eventually affect the heart and can lead the person to dream about the subject at night.

6. Fright or Shock

Shock affects the kidneys. The fight or flight reaction causes an excess release of adrenaline, which causes the heart to be affected. This leads to heart palpitations, insomnia, and anxiety.

7. Fear

Fear is a normal emotion; however, when it is chronic, it affects the kidneys, and extreme fright impairs the kidneys’ ability to hold qi. As a result, symptoms include a desire for solitude, bedwetting, listlessness, and the inability to control defecation and urination.

Miscellaneous Pathogenic Factors All remaining causes of disease that cannot fit into the exogenous or endogenous categories are placed into the miscellaneous group. Let’s take a brief look at some of the diseases that fall into this category.

Pestilence

Pestilential diseases have a quick onset, have consistent symptoms, and are highly infectious. In severe cases, they are fatal, and they may spread as an epidemic.

Traumatic Injuries

Traumatic injuries result from external mechanical violence, such as strains, contusions, injuries from falls, cuts, gunshot injuries, burns, and frostbite. Mild injuries cause bleeding, pain, skin and muscle wounds, swelling, and bruises. Severe cases produce injuries to bones, tendons, and internal organs; fractures; dislocations; and compression or rupture of the internal organs.

Insect & Animal Bites

Bites from insects, reptiles, and other animals may cause bruises, pain, and bleeding. Severe cases lead to poisoning due to toxins in the blood, which may result in convulsions, fever, coma, or manic insanity.

Stagnant Blood

Stagnant blood results when internal organs fail to function properly. Stagnant blood accumulates when the flow of blood is irregular due to qi deficiency. Symptoms of stagnant blood include chest pain, expectoration of blood, lower-abdomen pain, menstrual irregularities, uterine bleeding, and swelling and pain in the muscles.20-1 n

Top 6 Chinese Herbs to Lower Blood Pressure In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) there are various usages of Chinese herbs to lower blood pressure. High blood pressure is also called “hypertension,” and it’s a very serious and possibly life-threatening condition. A systolic reading of 140 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and a diastolic reading of 90 mmHg s as high blood pressure; healthy blood pressure reads around 120/80 mmHg. The condition affects about 70 million American adults—about one in three—and more than half of American seniors aged 65 to 75 are thought to have high blood pressure. TCM has long been used to treat high blood pressure and has a unique perspective on it. Basically, high blood pressure is considered to be a warning sign that the body is out of balance. Like conventional medicine, TCM believes that stress, a poor diet, and a sedentary lifestyle lead to hypertension. It is also thought that there are constitutional deficiencies, emotional factors, and damage to the liver, heart, and kidney systems.

How to Lower Blood Pressure with Chinese Herbs & Medicine High blood pressure also manifests when various patterns are present in the body. In the early stage of hypertension, there may be qi stagnation and blood stasis, accumulation of phlegm and dampness, and liver-yang hyperactivity. The review included seven database searches, 15 studies, and 1,364 patients with hypertension, and the study’s authors concluded that XZD is a beneficial and safe herbal formula for hypertension.

Lower Your Blood Pressure with These 6 Herbs The herbal formula XZD contains 11 Chinese herbs, including Rehmannia, Chinese angelica root, achyranthes root, and red peony root. It is used to lower blood pressure and improve blood-pressure-related symptoms that are caused by blood-stasis syndrome and qi stagnation, according to TCM. Other studies suggest that there are a number of herbal formulas to treat high blood pressure. The following are six of the top Chinese herbs to lower blood pressure— often found in these formulas.

1. Red Sage (Danshen)

Danshen is the dried root of Salvia miltiorrhiza, which is also called “red sage.” The herb is known to possess antihypertensive, anti-atherosclerosis, antioxidative, antiplatelet-aggregation, and anti-inflammatory effects. It’s been used in TCM for centuries to treat diseases of the blood vessels and heart. In a study published in the American Journal of Physiology – Heart and Circulatory Physiology in 2007, researchers found that tanshinone, which is the active ingredient in red sage, significantly lowered blood pressure and widened blood vessels in hamsters.

2. Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong)

Eucommia bark is found in Chinese herbal remedies to treat high blood pressure, and it is used in almost all Chinese formulas for hypertension. There is some evidence suggesting the effectiveness and safety of Eucommia bark in the treatment of hypertension, according to a study published in the journal Alternative Medicine Review in 2011.

3. Chinese Angelica Root (Dong Quai)

Chinese angelica root, or dong quai, is used in nearly every blood-building formula in TCM, and some research suggests that a Chinese angelica root solution can lower blood pressure and improve blood flow in pulmonaryhypertension patients.

4. Rehmannia (Di Huang)

Rehmannia is another Chinese herb to lower blood pressure, found in formulas for hypertension, including XZD. In a systematic review of randomized, controlled trials published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2012, researchers found that a Chinese herbal formula called “liu wei di huang wan” (LWDHW), which contains Rehmannia, is effective when combined with anti-hypertensive drugs in improving blood pressure and related symptoms in hypertensive patients.

5. Panax Ginseng (Ren Shen)

Panax ginseng is also called “Asian ginseng” and “Korean red ginseng.” It’s a popular Chinese remedy for high blood pressure and other cardiovascular functions. Several studies have suggested that Panax ginseng can help regulate blood pressure. Low doses of ginsenosides in Panax ginseng have been found to have an antihypertensive effect while also improving blood circulation.

6. Chinese Hawthorn (Shan Zha)

How to Use Schisandra Schisandra has long been used as a tonic tea. Schisandra is also readily available in a supplement form that can be found at most health-food stores. Here are the ways in which schisandra is often used: • Powdered schisandra fruit or fruit extract: experts recommend no more than 3 g of powdered schisandra each day. • Schisandra capsules or pills: take 1 gram (g) to 3 g of schisandra pills daily with meals. • Schisandra teas, wine, or tonic: schisandra is also available in teas or wines. You can also make brewed wines and teas featuring schisandra. To do this, steep up to 3 g in hot water for 40 to 60 minutes before consumption. For enhanced benefits, add other herbs like turmeric, licorice root, cinnamon, or ginger. • Schisandra tincture: make schisandra tinctures with a 1:6 ratio of water to pure dried schisandra extract. You may be able to find an already prepared tincture. Take 20 to 30 drops of the schisandra tincture per day. You can split the dose twice daily, taking it with a meal. In summary, the reported schisandra health benefits include ing adrenal function, reducing inflammation, protecting the skin, improving digestion and liver function, and improving mental performance.

Is Schisandra Safe to Use? Schisandra is possibly safe to consume orally, though minor side effects may include skin rash, upset stomach, loss of appetite, heartburn, and stomach pain. Although no major side effects have been reported, most research on schisandra involves animals, not humans. For this reason, pregnant and nursing women are advised not to take it. Schisandra may also affect the way in which other supplements or medications are absorbed in the body. A study of rats that were given liver-damaging amounts of acetaminophen found that a constituent called “gomisin” had some possible liver-damage effects but would not prevent glutathione depletion. Some studies have also found that schisandra interacts with drugs that are used for cancer treatment. Schisandra impacts how drugs are processed in the liver; therefore, it may reduce the effects of these drugs or increase the risk of toxicity. For these reasons, it is always best to talk to your doctor or natural-health practitioner before using schisandra or any other herbal treatment.36-48 n

In a new study from the University of Michigan, researchers isolated individual cherry phytonutrients and tested the antioxidant power alone, or paired together. Why Foods Can Heal You Far Better than Synthetic Vitamins In a study reported in Cancer Research, researchers gave lab rats several types of food that contained lycopene. Other rats received the substance via supplements. Those taking the supplements had no major reduction in tumor growth, but those eating the foods did. This study suggests that whole foods contain many other phytochemicals that work together with lycopene in an anticancer way. Is this because the lycopene was altered when the supplements were made or because foods contained other miracle healers that work with lycopene? Scientists still don’t know. But we do know this: the food worked and the supplements didn’t. It’s one thing to eat a nutrient; how your body absorbs and uses it is another. Add onions and simmer for a few minutes. 3. While onions are simmering, deal with the spices. Mix in the cinnamon, curry, turmeric, cayenne, and ginger and add 2 Tbsp. of the vegetable stock. Mix well. 4. Add this mix to the onions and stock already being heated. 5. Add the rest of your veggie stock to the onion and stock mix and let soup return to boil. Stir, then cover and heat. 6. After 5 minutes, add the potatoes, tomatoes, celery, and carrots and allow it to simmer in the covered saucepan for 20–30 minutes or until carrots and celery are tender. 7. Pour in the chickpeas, black pepper, saffron,and fresh-squeezed lemon juice and heat thoroughly before serving. 8. Enjoy! The Prostate Protecting Power of POMEGRANATES Research shows that pomegranate juice may be an effective tool in battling prostate cancer. Pomegranates are rich in phenols, plant chemicals that have powerful healing effects on the body. A clinical study at UCLA looked at 50 men who had aggressive forms prostate cancer. All had gone through surgery or radiation but their levels of “prostate-specific antigens” (PSAs) continued to increase after surgery, which is an indication that the disease remains. The men’s PSA levels were quickly doubling, which translates into a fast-growing cancer. The faster PSA levels double, the less likely the patient will survive the cancer. So, in this rather dire situation, the men drank one 8-ounce glass of pomegranate juice a day. Almost right away, their conditions started improving. They went from PSA levels doubling in 15 months to doubling in 54 months. This means that the juice dramatically slowed down the rate at which PSA levels were rising, thus creating a much better possibility that each man would survive the cancer. Though preliminary, the study raises hope that prostate cancer may be treated naturally by the pomegranate. More research is underway, but you don’t need to wait to enjoy pomegranates.
