1. Purpose of this Document:  1.1 Who is this guide for, and what will you learn from it After buying a Silhouette Cameo to cut my Pepakura pieces, I was both excited and bewildered.    There seemed to  be no “Definitive” resource on how to use this machine and the software to cut my card stock for me.      I watched several YouTube videos, read several threads on a few sites, but still seemed to be lacking some of the  basic information on the process from start to end.   What was worst of all for me appeared to be the random  incomplete threads I found in relation to some of my own questions or problems.   I vowed that once I understood it all, I would create a definitive guide on how to use the Silhouette Cameo to cut  Pepakura parts.   I hope that this helps others where a gaping hole was left in my life.  I will break the guide down into several sections.  Some might be relatively obvious, but I encourage you to READ  THEM ALL.   Some of my biggest issues were on topics that seemed very simple  If you have comments or additions, please let me know and I will update this guide accordingly 

2. Software Required:   Before you even hook up the Cameo to your PC or Laptop, let’s start with some basics that you need to have in place 

2.1 Installing Pepakura Viewer for Cameo Purchase and  the Pepakura Viewer for Cameo from the Tamasoft website  (http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura‐en//viewer_crobo.html)    

 

Don’t be confused by the names in the URL link.  This is for the CAMEO Silhouette Machine.   While there is  older software and drivers for the Craft Robo machine, this guide and all references will be for the Cameo  machine.    Links to the Craft Robo software are also on the link above, but you are on your own when using that one!  This version of the viewer is PAID software.  It is not free like the other viewer, but it is worth the few dollars  to purchase, and you will save HOURS of time from cutting manually! 

2.2 Installing the Drivers for Cameo You need to install the proper driver for the Cameo so that it is recognized on your PC.   You can obtain the full  “Silhouette Studio” software for your Cameo from the vendor’s website:   http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/?page=software      

 

 

Once you install “Silhouette Studio” you will have the proper drivers for the device  If you still don’t have the proper drivers or want to install them direct without the entire Cameo “Silhouette  Studio” software suite, you can obtain JUST the drivers from this link on the vendors site.  I did this for my  Win7 64 bit machine and it worked fine for me!  http://www.silhouettefr.fr/silhouette_drivers.html  At the time of this writing there were no Windows 8 drivers listed on the vendor website.   I am not sure if  the windows 7 Drivers will work on Windows 8 or not.  One  who read this guide reported that the drivers from the website DID NOT WORK properly and he  had to use the ones from the CD included with the device.  I always  first and try the latest, but if  you have issue, try the version that comes on the CD as a backup.    Page 4 of 24

3. H How to co onfiguring g the softw ware:  O Once everything is installed on your com mputer it is tiime to set a feew basic setttings that will make your life MUCH  eeasier.  Launch the Pepaku ura Viewer forr Cameo and have a samp le .PDO file o on hand to wo ork with 

3.1 ing your software 



Start tthe Pepakuraa viewer for C Cameo after in nstalled.  It is  important to o note that th his is differentt than the  free vviewer prograam and can be e installed with both the frree viewer an nd the full blo own Pepakuraa 3 Designer  app.  You will have e separate sho ortcuts for eaach, so if you  have others iinstalled, be ssure to start tthe proper  one.  nu, enter you ur registration n  too fully activatee the softwarre  From the help men

Mark Measu urements 3.2 Setting Default Regiistration M 

Next, from the setttings Menu, sselect “Registtration‐Mark  Settings” 

  

In the e sub menu fo or Registration marks, chan nge the defauult setting to “5mm” for all edges.  Thiss will help to  provid de more room m on the pape er so that the e registration  marks used b by the Cameo o do not overrlay your cut  lines o of your Pepakkura Pieces (m more on this later).     Notee:  Changing tthis setting haas NO EFFECTT on sizing or  scaling of your parrts…so DON’TT WORRY!

3.3 Setting Default Prin nt Settings 

The next setting w we want to adjjust is the Print Settings.    Select this fro om the “Settiings” menu 

     

Be SSure to UNCH HECK the “Do not print line es” option (ottherwise you won’t have any lines on yo our printouts  whicch is just….stu upid.)  Change the “Thicckness of Line e” setting to ““5”  Slide e the Print Lin ne Transparency slider to 0 0%  Uncheck the “Print Page Num mber” checkbo ox as it servess no use, and your Cameo will just try to cut the  page er number ou ut if it is there e.

4. P Printing Y Your Partts to be Cu ut with Pe epakura V Viewer for Cameo:  N Now you are rready to startt printing you ur Pepakura p parts on your  regular printeer so that you ur Cameo can n cut them  o out for you.  TThere are a fe ew basic bits o of informatio on to know whhen doing thiis that we will now cover

4.1 Working with Letter vs. A4 Sizze Paper Open a .P PDO file with p parts to be prrinted on card d stock paperr.  r it is best to use 110lb carrd stock to  keep yourr design solid later when aassembled  Look at yo our images an nd make sure e that the partts fit cleanly oon either Lettter or A4 paper size (which hever you  intend to use)    

per size, you  should purch hase and use Pepakura Dessigner 3 to  If your PDO files arre setup for a different pap resize e the paper an nd move the part around tto properly fitt the new pap per size 

4.2 Checking g Placement of Registrration Mark ks for Prin ting Once you have a PDO w with the prop per size paperr and layout oof pieces, you u should open n the “Print Preview”  feature in n Pepakura Viewer for Cam meo and make e sure that thhe registration n marks that will be printeed on the  paper do not overlap o or come too cclose to your parts.   This iss where the 55mm setting iin section 3.2 2 comes into  will give you so ome extra spaace, but if you u have ANY ooverlap, you n need to movee the parts aro ound on the  play.  It w sheet.    O Overlap of the e registration marks WILL ccause mis‐cutts and cut aliggnment issuees!  

4.3 TamaSoftt’s Recomm mendation of Registra ation Markss for Printiing 

Imp portant side n note:  It is also o important to note this ti p that is on th he Tamasoft website for h how to use  the product.  The ey mention th he registration marks as I hhave done ab bove, but also o say that there is an  heir size that m must be conssidered when  making sure pieces do no ot overlap into o the  “exttension” of th registration markk area.   I am not sure how w true this is, bbut I have seeen mis‐cut pieces on my m machine that  m to be fixed when I follow w their inform mation below w a bit more closely…  seem

 

w” to fix so ome strange e issues 4.4 Using “Prrint Preview I had som me initial issues with printss not workingg right on my  printer.  Linees not showing, random paatters  printing.  I found that doing a printt preview firstt before printting solved so ome of my isssues.  If you eencounter  some sim milar printing problems tryy using a Printt Preview firstt and then prrinting from th hat preview sscreen

4.5 Making sure you ha ave “Edge ID D” enabled Before yo ou print it is VERY importan nt to turn on the “Show Eddge ID” option in the “View w” menu.  Wiithout this  your printts will not havve the edge n numbers need ded to line upp the parts wh hen gluing!!!   Most PDO ffiles have this  enabled b by default, but some do no ot.   You can aalways edit annd turn on/saave this settin ng using Pepakura  Designer 3 program.

4.6 Using the e “Show Pag ge Numberrs” feature Another important feature to turn on for use w when you startt cutting is th he “Show Page Numbers” o option in the  menu.  “View” m

   

Turn ning this featu ure on allowss you to quickkly identify th e page numb ber later when n cutting pages in the  Cam meo  The blue page nu umber inform mation shown in the 2D meenu screen W WILL NOT printt on any of yo our print outss.    NLY  It is an onscreen reference ON

4.7 Printing y your pagess You can n now begin printing pages to your normaal printer (NO OT THE CAMEO) using the standard “Filee/Print”  menu.   BE SURE TO SEET THE PROPEER ORIENTATION (Portrait  or Landscapee) based on yyour PDO file layout!  Remembe er it is best to o use 110lb caard stock to keep your dessign solid later when assem mbled

5. C Cutting ou ut your piieces with h the Cam meo  Get rready!  This iss the part you u were waitingg for!  You fin nally get to cuut some piecees!   But we have a few mo ore CRITITCALL  stepss to follow he ere in the mosst important ssection so farr, so READ CLLOSELY! 

5.1 Measurin ng Registra ation Markss Before we e can begin, yyou need to check your reggistration ma rks on your p printouts befo ore we cut on n the Cameo.    This is a very importan nt step that if you don’t follow properlyy, will cause yo ou to get cut lines that don’t match up with yourr printouts!  



The first thing to realize is thaat your registrration marks  are read in Leength and Wiidth sizes (a.kka. Portrait vss.  dscape orienttation)   it’s im mportant to n note that wheen you measu ure you need to know thatt these  Land num mber switch w when you worrk in a different orientatio n.  The Pepakura vie ewer for the SSilhouette alw ways shows thhe distance b between regisstration markks (see below)),  measure mannually and usee your own m measurements.  but this is almostt NEVER exactt.  You must m

**NOTE**  Some peop ple have noticed that just adding 1mm m to one of yo our measurem ments is a go ood “quick  and easy way” to do the following,, but I have in ncluded thesee detailed steeps to ensuree proper meaasurements.

You will need to use a Metric ruler to check your registrration marks and measuree them EXACTTLY in  nter the info into the Came eo controller  screen later iin the process.    milliimeters to en NOT TE:  If you don n’t own a Metric ruler, you u can downlooad one from this site and print one outt to use:   http p://printable‐ruler.net/  For aanyone that d does not live in a country that uses Mettric measurem ment and neeeds a refresheer, here is a  guide e to reading m millimeters on n a metric ruller: 

   Thiss is 1 MM    10 M MM = 1 CM    Next, set the ruler on one of yo our pages (yo ou only need tthis measurement ONCE p per PDO file yyou are  workking with.  The e Measureme ent will stay tthe same for aall pages in th hat PDO file).   Measure th he distance  from m the edge of tthe black squ uare to the co orresponding  registration b bracket.   Cap pture the distance in  millim meters for bo oth the length h and width o of the page.     The examplee below show ws a length of 269mm

5.2 Adjusting g the Cameo Blade De epth for Carrd Stock Pa aper It is recom mmended thaat you set you ur blade depth h to the num ber 3 setting on your Cam meo cutter wh hen using  110lb Card stock paper.  Reference the manual ffor the devicee on how to d do this if it is u unclear.  

I staarted with the e recommend ded blade dep pth of “3” butt had a few pieces that did d not fully cutt for me.  I  put the blade hallf way betwee en “3” and “4 4” and have nnot had a prob blem since.   This is sometthing you  might want to monitor closelyy once you be ou see fit for your needs egin to cut annd adjust as yo  

5.3 Placing your paper into the Ca ameo Machine Now we w will be placingg the paper onto the came eo mat and looading into th he machine fo or cutting    

Take e note of the orientation o of your paper and place it  on the cutting mat with th he square reggistration  marrks shown bellow.   Despite e printing you ur paper landsscape, it will aalways be cutt in a portraitt type layout It do oes not matte er WHERE on the mat yourr paper is pla ced.   The Cameo will read d the registration marks to o  find the cut edge es  he paper as sttraight as posssible using thhe guide liness on the cuttin ng mat  It is best to lay th

It is important to o note that the arrow on th he cutting maat DOES NOT line up with aanything on tthe roller bar.   It on e direction th nly implies th he cutting maat will load intto the machin ne

With h the mat beiing held in plaace against th he white rolleers, hit the “Enter” button on the Cameeo to load the e  med dia.   The rolle ers will spin and feed the m mat into the m machine

Line e up the “Thiccker white edgges” of the cu utting mat wiith the white rollers on thee machine an nd hold them  up aagainst the ro ollers

5.4 Aligning tthe Cutter w with Registration Ma ark The Cameo o will read the e registration marks on the e paper to he lp identify exxactly where yyou cut edgess on each  piece are.  In order to do o this, we nee ed to set the ccutter over a  registration mark so it can later scan the paper and d  find its orie entation  



Usin ng the four directional buttons on the ccutter, line th e white botto om of the cuttting blade dirrectly over  the square registtration mark o on your paper.   This is thee starting poin nt the machin ne will use to scan the  he other regisstration markks.   This mustt be done EAC CH TIME you cut a piece off paper!  paper and find th on later to use e the on‐screen software b buttons to move the bladee, but using  **NOTE** you have the optio the physical buttons is MUCH easier  Beefore you can n read the  registration mark  reading the ccutting  head must be lined up  directly over th he square  bllock registration mark

5.5 Cutting Y Your Pieces Using the same PDO file you printed d in Section 4 4, we will now w prep the cuttting settingss  

With h your PDO fiile open, go to o the “File/Cu ut Developmeents” 

  

You will now be p prompted as to which pagge you would  like to cut.   TThis is where the “Show Page Number””  mes in handy tto get a visuaal reference fo or which  on tthe 2D Menu View settingss in section 4.6 above com printed page you u want to cut.   Select the p page numberr of the physiccal paper from m the drop do own and  conttinue

5.5.1 1 Basic Se etup Tab for Cutting Now we n need to set se everal “Basic SSetup” featurres for our Caameo      

Make e sure Paper SSize option is correct  Checkk the Box for “Use Carrier SSheet”  Changge unit of measure to mm instead of inches  Make e sure Design Orientation m matches that of your PDO  file design (Landscape or Portrait)  When n done, click o on “Cutline Se ettings”

5.5.2 2 Cutline Settings Ta ab for Cuttiing On the “C Cutline Settinggs” tab we are going to sett several opti ons     

Add aa new Allowab ble Color Range.  You can set it to any ccolor you likee, but I alwayss make mine red.     For th he Cutline Settting, you wan nt to choose “Dashed Linee”  Set bo oth your Cut Line Segmentt and Uncut LLine Segment  to “0.5 mm”   If you did n not set the unit of measure e  to milllimeters on tthe previous sscreen, go back and do so  now.  Use th he “Save as/O Open” button n to save all se ettings on thi s tab and on the basic setup tab to eassily load them m  in future use of the e program.  TThese settingss will stay in pplace and do not have to b be set again u until the  er is closed.  viewe

5.5.3 3 Cameo C Controller Settings Ta ab / Readin ng Registra ation Markss We are fin nally ready to o set the conttroller settings and read ouur registration marks so w we can cut    

Be ssure to set the e Media Type e to “Card witthout Craft Paaper Backing””  Check the box for “Registratio on Marks”  Set tthe distance in millimeterss between yo our registratioon marks baseed on the meeasurements yyou took in  secttion 5.1 

** The following stepss to read registration marks must be d one EACH TIM ME you cut p paper**  

6. A Advanced d Hints an nd Tips This ssection contaains a few helpful tips and suggestions tthat may aid  you in resolvving issues or just with oveerall use of  your Cameo cuttin ng process

6.1 Peeling cut Pieces frrom the Ca ameo Mat Removing yyour cut piece es from the cutting mat caan be a bit triccky, especially on a new cu utting mat that is highly  sticky.   If yo ou are not caareful, you can n easily tear yyour pieces, oor accidently put a “Curl” iinto the papeer as you  remove it.     I suggest th he following ttips:    



move the “waste” cut pape er area first le eaving only yoour final piecees on the matt.   Then focus on  Rem rem moving the pie eces one at a time  Whe en peeling pie eces from the e mat, fold the mat DOWN N while slowlyy peeling your pieces upwaard.  This will  keep p your piece ffrom curling aand help to se eparate it froom the cuttingg mat  The following hin nt was suggesstion was from m PurdueMa adLou from ttherpf.com who suggested d attaching a  full sheet of card d stock to the mat and pullling it off whoole before usiing it for a "production" paart.   This will  relie eve some of tthe initial tackk on the mat and allow eassier removal of small and delicate cut p parts  If po ossible, purch hase the Silho ouette Spatulaa tool to assisst in removingg pieces.  You u can likely fin nd generic  tools for the sam me function att local craft orr hobby shop s

6.2 Preservin ng and clea aning your cutting Ma at Your Cameo o mat should last you quitte a long time e, but will eveentually lose its “tack” or ““stickiness”.    To prolong  the life of yyour cutting m mat, the follow wing techniqu ues can be ussed      

Be ssure to cover the mat when not in use w with the blue  wax paper th hat it ships with  Try not to let the e mat fall face e down on anyy surfaces  You can clean the e mat with a baby wipe if it loses its tacck.   This help ps, but is not p perfect  You can use spray stencil adhe esive from a ccraft store to  restore the ttack to the mat  Always have extrra mats (and ccutting blades) stocked if yyou need theem as backup 

6.3 Strange Issues with Printing While the isssues I experiience might b be limited to jjust myself, I  thought it wiise to includee it in this guid de.   I had  several issu ues printing m my paper to be cut that we ere resolved bby using the ““Print Preview w” feature firsst and then  printing fro om that screen.  Issues I exp perienced included:   

Edge e IDs were prresent, but the Lines not sh howing on thhe printout  Strange patterns or images prrinting on the e entire page

6.4 Leaving sspace aroun nd your cuttter Don’t underestimate the e amount of sspace needed d in front or bbehind the Caameo.   Be surre there are n no  obstruction ns, wires or otther things th he cutting mat can get stucck on while m moving in/outt of the Cameeo while  cutting.    

6.5 Correctin ng Offset Cu uts It is very co ommon for pe eople to experience the Caameo not cuttting properly.   Often timees the cutliness on your  pieces will b be offset sligh htly, and som metimes they can be offsett greatly.   It iss also commo on that you m might see thatt  part of your page will be e exact and th he cut lines skkew further ddown the page as the mach hine progressses.  Skewed cutt lines are usu ually a result o of two thingss:  

Registration Marrk Measureme ents are not ccorrect.     Please see section 5.1 on how to corrrect this and  5.5.3 on how w to properly eenter the corrrect  measureme ents  erlap of registration marks with your pie eces  Ove o 3 there is an “invisible” to lerance area around your registration m marks that  As covered in section 4.3 e your ability to properly ccut pieces.   I eencountered this MANY tiimes until I fin nally realized can impede that I need to rearrange e my pieces ussing the Pepaakura Designeer 3 software.    It drove m me crazy to see e  e pep file work, while othe rs failed.   On nce I rearrangged the piece to  some pagess in the same compensate for this tole erance area, e everything waas fine!   o



6.6 Issues Reading Registration Marks As mentioned in section 5.5.3, you might have issues reading registration marks on your paper.   There are several  possible reasons for this which can be easily fixed:  

If you get ANY kind of error reading the registration marks this is due to:  o The alignment in step 5.4 not being exact  o Bad ambient lighting on the cutter that will not allow the optics to read the registration marks  o Registration marks not being printed dark enough 

6.7 Working with fold lines Despite the Cameo making perforation cuts on fold lines, I still find that on some smaller pieces (Where fold areas  are very small) it is better to LIGHTLY score the line again with an x‐acto knife to assist in folding the shape.  Just  be VERY CAREFUL to only slightly score the piece and not cut too deep 

6.8 Fixing Registration Mark Printing Issues The following issue was reported by NovaDom on the therpf.com forum:   Your guide says to change the default setting to '5mm' for all edges. I did that and I had a recurring problem while doing test prints.  There's supposed to be 3 registration marks on every sheet, one black square, and two 'L' shaped marks.  The black square and the first 'L' printed correctly while the second 'L' only printed partially (only one line _).  After a couple of hours of trying a LOT of different things, I realized that I was working against the limitations of  my printer.    I have a HP inkjet (#1510) and I can't print anything lower than 15mm to the bottom of the page.  I can however print to 4mm of the top, right and left side of the page.    So, different people may have to try different settings, as per their printer's limitations.    So, for my printer, I need to use the following Default Registration Mark Measurements:    If printing portrait  Registration marks, from top side: 5mm  Registration marks, from bottom side: 15mm  Registration marks, from left side: 5mm  Registration marks, from right side: 5mm    If printing landscape  Registration marks, from top side: 5mm  Registration marks, from bottom side: 5mm  Registration marks, from left side: 5mm  Registration marks, from right side: 15mm (the 'right' side is the 'bottom' of the page when printing landscape)

6.9 Issues Installing Cameo Drivers The following issue was reported by NovaDom on the therpf.com forum:   I would like to point out that if you purchased a Silhouette Cameo brand new, the Silhouette Studio software  comes in the box.  Following the guide, I ed the software from the vendor's website (before realizing I  had the CD) and the drivers didn't work for me, for some reason.  To update the drivers, I used the Silhouette Studio CD I had, and it worked right away  NOTE FROM GRENEX:  Typically the software/drivers included on the CD in the box are old and outdated.  I  typically recommend ing the latest from the vendor website, but in this instance it fixed the issue 

6.10 Easier Alignment of the cutting blade with registration mark The following hint was suggestion was from PurdueMadLou from therpf.com who suggested taking the cutter  out of the holder when aligning it with the registration mark, centering it using the arrows on the machine while  looking down through the circle in the cutter holder.
