Fashion merchandising is a profession that incorporates the Ato-Z processes in the fashion business ranging from producing, product development, promoting and buying and selling fashion items such as clothing, accessories, jewelry, cosmetics and shoes A fashion merchandiser may work for a textile manufacturer, a designer or a fashion retail outlet such as a department store, . children’s clothing store or a discount store.
RETAIL MERCHANDISING •Retail Merchandising refers to the various activities which contribute to the sale of products to the consumers for their end use •The first important step in retail merchandising is establishing working relationships with manufacturers who will provide the goods or services that are ultimately sold by the retailer.

EXPORT MERCHANDISING • In this, the objective is to sell goods at foreign market. • It involves interaction with the overseas buyer .

It is the process of presenting the retail goods and merchandise for sale in a international consumer market. An export merchandiser is involved from manufacturing to the sale of merchandise. Also he is the mediator between the buyer and the manufacturer.

ROLE OF A MERCHANDISER
ROLE OF AN EXPORT MERCHANDISER The successful execution of any garment export order depends on the work performance of a merchandiser. Merchandiser is the person who plans and co-ordinates all the activities right from the order procuring and till the shipment order. A merchandiser should have the comprehensive knowledge of his work procedures and responsibilities so that he could perform his job efficiently and effectively In the apparel export industry, a merchandiser has to perform the following functions.
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT In the seller role, the merchandiser helps buyers with developing merchandise specifications for export house orders Helps developing samples and presentation portfolios used to secure prospective buyers Helps a client develop custom specifications for garment designs, including fabric and colour selections
SAMPLING Merchandiser ensure the pattern cuts as per measurements. Coordinate for timely delivery. Navigational Checks on production schedule. Ensure fit sample/size sets and pre-production samples as per buyers requirement. Design time and action plan. Coordination with the production department.
COSTING Negotiate price from the buyer To cost and price the product To cost the raw materials used Operating cost of the company To Profit planning of the organization To bear in mind the buyers price point requirements and his (the buyers) end consumer as well
PLANNING A merchandiser has to check the order requirement, planning for the given order, programming for various activities, proper allocation of work to the assistants. Motivate and Training Employees. Meeting with buyers & employees in various levels
PRODUCTION Receiving orders from Merchandising Dept. during Pre-Production Meeting Understanding details of the style and variables Production planning Co-ordinate with fabric/accessories stores Manage Cutting Department Ensuring on time production and timely deliveries
PACKING Merchandiser checks and approves a piece for the type of packing and the packing materials. The carton thickness, size, colour etc. are instructed by the merchandiser to the packing department as per the buyer’s requirement. Number of pieces to be packed and the marks and numbers to be printed on the carton is also instructed by the merchandiser to them A packing list is prepared by the Merchandiser with all the packing details mentioned in it and given to the packing department
SHIPPING & DOCUMENTATION Interacting with Production & Packing Dept. for packing details and coordinating with Dispatch Dept. for shipment handover to forwarder Making Packing List and other relevant documents for consignee set as mentioned in the Letter of Credit A quality checker assigned on behalf of buyer checks and approves the garments, after which they are shipped Co-ordinates with buyer’s shipping department Arrange all the documents needed for shipping (excise & customs)
BUYING HOUSE MERCHANDISING It is a very crucial activity of the fashion merchandising. Because this is the actual process of manufacturing the good and bringing them for the sales at retail stores. A buyer’s responsibilities include both the buying and selling aspects of retailing.
ROLE OF MERCHANDISER IN A BUYING HOUSE • Merchandisers need to have updated information on colours, fabrics, and styling for the forthcoming season which can be obtained from the buyers, foreign counterparts of buying agencies & from fashion/clothing mages • Coordinating with factories for submits such as yarns/ lab dips, desk loom, bulk fabrics, fit samples, pre-production samples, •
Order enquiry – Cross costing & pricing, negotiations - securing orders – distributing orders

Ensuring that the product is developed as per buyer’s requirements.
• To coordinate with factories and buyers very closely to ensure that right quality samples and bulk production are shipped timely • Merchandisers need to be meticulous, update the records/system on time and need to systematically follow up with factories & buyers
