CHAPTER 1 1. ASKING AND GIVING ATTENTION Expressing Attention adalah cara yang digunakan untuk meminta seseorang memfokuskan perhatiannya kepada kita atau sebaliknya kita yang memfokuskan perhatian kepada orang yang sedang berbicara. Pada postingan kali ini saya akan berbagi tentang berbagai macam expression yang bisa digunakan ketika kita ingin meminta perhatian dari seseorang atau memberi perhatian kepada seseorang. Untuk setiap situasi tersebut saya juga akan membagikan beberapa dialogue yang bisa digunakan sebagai acuan dalam memahami penggunaan expression tersebut. Asking Attention Excuse me! Listen to me! Atau, ketika kita ditanya apakah kita mengerti tentang sebuah penjelasan maka kita akan menjawabnya sesuai dengan tingkat pemahaman kita, apakah kita paham atau kurang paham. Dalam bahasa Inggris ini dapat dilakukan dengan frase-frase berikut. Checking for understanding (menanyakan kepahaman) (semua pernyataan berikut berarti “apakah Anda mengerti”)

ASKING AND GIVING OPINION Dialog opini adalah dialog yang terdiri dari dua orang atau lebih yang memiliki pendapat satu sama lain. Dapat menggunakan ekspresi, seperti menurut saya, saya pikir dll. Dialog argumen adalah dialog yang menyatakan argumen atau alasan. CHAPTER 2 THE USAGE OF MODALS (KEGUNAAN MODALS) Modal (modalitas) adalah bentuk kata yang membantu kata kerja. Modal harus disandingkan dengan verbs. Oleh karenanya, modal juga sering dinamakan kata kerja ganti. Berikut beberapa penggunaan modal : 1. Can/could Can digunakan untuk menyatakan kemampuan di masa sekarang (present), sedangkan could digunakan untuk menunjukkan kemampuan di masa lampau (past) a. Menyatakan kemampuan Contoh : 

I can cook very well. ( Aku bisa memasak dengan sangat baik. )



I could not sing this song beautifully. ( Aku tidak bisa menyanyikan lagu ini dengan baik. )

b. Menyatakan kemungkinan Contoh: 

I Can Call You If I have finished my work. ( Aku bisa meneleponmu jika pekerjaanku sudah

selesai. ) 

I Could not listen to what he said. ( Aku tidak bisa mendengarkan apa yang dia katakan. )

letak bank terdekat? Will Will mengandung arti akan dan bisa digunakan untuk semua subjek. a. Digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu rencana (plan) Contoh : 



Will you come to my party? ( Akankah kau akan datang ke pestaku? )

b. Digunakan untuk menyatakan kemauan (willingness) Contoh: 

I will help you. ( Aku akan membantumu. )



(PERMINTAAN) Berikut adalah beberapa frase dan contoh kalimat yang bisa digunakan untuk memberikan perintah (command) dan melakukan permintaan (request). A. Command (Kalimat Perintah) 1. Untuk membuat kalimat perintah kita bisa menggunakan kata “command, order, tell, ask, must, and shall”. Contoh Kalimat: My mother commanded me to help her. (Artinya: Ibuku memerintahku untuk membantunya) The teacher ordered the students to do the exercise. (Artinya: guru memerintah murid-murid mengerjakan latihan) I told you to be quiet. (Artinya: Saya menyuruhmu diam) He asked me to open the window. (Artinya: Dia memerintahku untuk membuka jendela) You must write the lessson. (Artinya: Kamu harus menulis/ mencatat pelajaran itu) You must go home now. (Artinya: Kamu harus pulang sekarang) This table shall be cleaned. (Artinya: Meja ini hendaknya dibersihkan) This book shall be read together. (Artinya: Buku ini hendaknya dibaca bersama-sama) CATATAN: Kata “command, order, & tell” merupakan verb (kata kerja). Sedangkan kata “ask” digunakan dalam causative, dan kata “must & shall” merupakan modal auxiliaries. 2. Be + Adjective Contoh Kalimat: Be quiet! (Artinya: Diamlah) Be ready. (Artinya: Bersiaplah) Be careful! (Artinya: hati-hatilah) Etc.

3. Let us (Let’s) + Infinitives Contoh Kalimat: Let us go now. (Artinya: Mari kita pergi sekarang) Let’s study together. (Artinya: Mari kita belajar bersama) Let’s find the way out. (Artinya: Mari kita menemukan jalan keluar) B. Prohibition (Larangan) Do not boleh dipendekkan jadi "don't" yang artinya "jangan" kalau dileatkkan di depan kalimat. Misalnya: Do not come here! Artinya jangan datang kemari! Don't look at it! Artinya jangan lihat itu! Don't forget your lesson! Artinya jangan lupakan pelajaranmu itu! Do not go there! Artinya jangan pergi ke sana! Jadi jangan pake "good" saja atau "good good". Karena kalimat Command and Request ini tidak ada "verb"-nya, maka "be"-lah yang menjadi wakil "verb". Contoh: Don't be lazy! = Jangan malas! Don't be stupid! = Jangan bodoh! Don't be careless = Jangan lalai! Don't be ashamed = Jangan malu! Akan tetapi kalau sesudah be itu ada kata benda atau nama orang maka arti be itu adalah jadi/menjadi, misalnya: Be a teacher! = Jadilah guru! Be a president! = Jadilah presiden! Don't be a corruptor! = Jangan jadi koruptor! Don't be a traitor = Jangan jadi pengkhianat! Be an honest man = Jadi orang jujurlah! C. Request (Permintaan) Can you/ Could you Contoh Kalimat: Can you help me, Please! (Artinya: Dapatkah anda menolongku!) Could you open the gate. (Artinya: Bisakah kamu membukakan gerbangnya) Will you/ won’t you Contoh Kalimat: Will you pick me up ?

(Artinya: Maukah kamu menjemputku?) Won’t you send the letter? (Artinya: Maukah kamu mengirim surat ini?) Contoh Kalimat Would you like to drink this tea, please. (Artinya: Maukah anda meminum teh ini) Would you like to lift this chair, please. (Artinya: Maukah anda mengangkat kursi ini) Would you mind Contoh Kalimat: Would you mind finishing it first? (Artinya: Tidak keberatankah anda untuk menyelesaikannya dahulu?) Would you mind watching film with me? (Artinya: Tidak keberatankah anda menonton film dengan saya?) CHAPTER 4 INVITATIONS AND GREETING CARD A. INVITATION CARD What is an Invitation? Menurut vocabulary.com, invitation adalah: An invitation is a request, a solicitation, or an attempt to get another person to you at a specific event. Kalau kita artikan dalam bahasa Indonesia, invitation adalah sebuah permintaan, ajakan, atau upaya terhadap orang lain agar bersedia bergabung atau datang dengan kita pada suatu acara tertentu. Invitation a text which containing a request, a solicitation, or an attempt to get another person to you at a specific event (sebuah teks yang berisi sebuah permintaan) Menurut Oxford Learner’s Dictionary mengartikan “invitation” sebagai berikut: a spoken or written request to somebody to do something or to go somewhere Jadi “invitation” adalah sebuah permintaan yang berupa ucapan atau tulisan yang ditujukan kepada seseorang untuk melakukan Sesutu atau pergi ke suatu tempat. Suadah jelas bukan? B. COUNTABLE DAN UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS COUNTABLE NOUNS Adalah kata benda yang dapat dihitung secara langsung, misalnya one apple, two apples dan sebagainya. Countable nouns juga dapat menggunakan artikel a atau an dan juga dapat dibuat jamak. Contoh kata benda yang dapat dihitung : person, box, coin, animal, bottle, table, cup, plate,chair, bag, cat, dog, glass, book, man, baby house, dan lain-lain. Berikut merupakan penggunaan countable nouns dalam kalimat : • I have a brother and two sisters • Ryan has a cheese sandwich and an apple for breakfast • Do you like these photos? UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS (MASS NOUNS) adalah kata benda yang tidak dapat dihitung. Contohnya adalah water. Kata tersebut tidak bisa dikatakan a water atau two water, tetapi dapat digunakan dengan menyisipkan kata benda lainnya, contonya a glass of water. Contoh kata benda yang tidak dapat dihitung: rice, love, sugar, assistance, cheese, coffee, fun, money, advice, tea, music, art, sand, air, dan lain-lain. Berikut merupakan penggunaan uncountable nouns pada kalimat : • She has some food • Can you give me some information about that? KATA MUCH, MANY, FEW, LITTLE PADA COUNTABLE DAN UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS 1. Much dan many Many digunakan untuk countable nouns, sedangkan much digunakan untuk uncountable nouns. Kedua kata ini sama-sama berarti banyak. Contoh : • How many years have you lived in Jakarta? • I have so much homework 2. Number dan amount Number digunakan untuk countable nouns, sedangkan amount untuk uncountable nouns. Keduanya sama-sama memiliki arti sejumlah. Contoh kalimat : • We have been friends for a number of years • They are taking huge amounts of our money 3. Few dan little Keduanya memilik arti yang sama yaitu sedikit. Few digunakan untuk countable nouns dan little sebaliknya.

Contoh • There is a few men in the party • I need a little help now 4. Fewer dan less Fewer digunakan untuk countable nouns, sedangkan less digunakan untuk uncountable nouns dan mempunyai arti yang sama yakni sedikit. Contoh : • A secretary makes a less money than a manager • Fewer birds came this year 5. Some dan any Some dan any mempunyai arti yang sama yaitu beberapa, biasa digunakan untuk menyatakan jumlah tak tentu pada countable nouns jamak atau uncountable nouns. Contoh : • She has some questions • I owe any money PENGERTIAN SIMPLE PAST TENSE Simple past tense adalah suatu bentuk kata kerja sederhana untuk menunjukkan bahwa suatu kejadian terjadi di masa lampau. Pada simple past tense, waktu kejadian (yesterday, last two days, last year) atau periode waktunya (for two months, for a day, for an hour) dapat disebutkan secara spesifik. Rumus Simple Past Tense Simple past tense dibentuk dari verb-2 (past tense) atau linking verb “be” (was, were). Apa itu verb2? Verb-2 merupakan bare infinitive (bentuk dasar verb) dengan tambahan -ed, -en, -d, -t, -n, atau -ne untuk regular verb atau bentuk yang tidak konsisten pada irregular verb. 

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT Teks Deskriptif yaitu teks yang menjelaskan gambaran seseorang atau benda. Tujuannya adalah untuk menggambarkan atau mengungkapkan orang, tempat atau benda tertentu. Descriptive text ini adalah suatu teks yang menjelaskan atau mendeskripsikan orang orang, binatang atau suatu benda baik bentuknya, sifat-sifatnya, jumlahnya dan lain-lain. Tujuan dari descriptive untuk menjelaskan, menggambarkan atau mengungkapkan seseorang atau suatu benda. Struktur Descriptive Text (generic structure) adalah : 1. Identification (identifikasi) adalah pendahuluan , berupa gambaran umum tentang suatu topik. 2.Description (deskripsi) adalah berisi ciri-ciri khusus yang dimiliki benda, tempat, atau orang yang dideskripsikan. STRUKTUR DESCRIPTIVE TEXT (GENERIC STRUCTURE) Struktur Descriptive Text (generic structure) adalah : 1. Identification (identifikasi) adalah pendahuluan, berupa gambaran umum tentang suatu topik. 2.Description (deskripsi) adalah berisi ciri-ciri khusus yang dimiliki benda, tempat, atau orang yang dideskripsikan. DEGREES OF COMPARISON Dalam bahasa Inggris kata sifat dapat diperbandingkan. Comparison adalah perbandingan yang digunakan untuk membandingkan dua benda atau lebih. Perbandingan tersebut memiliki tiga tingkatan. Positive (perbandingan sama) Comparative (perbandingan lebih) dan Superlative (perbandingan paling). Untuk lebih jelasnya saya akan jelaskan satu persatu tentang tingkatan perbandingan tersebut. Positive Degree Yaitu perbandingan yang bermakna "sama" (equal). RECOUNT TEXT Recount Text adalah salah satu jenis text dalam bahasa Inggris yang menceritakan kembali tentang kejadian-kejadian atau pengalaman-pengalaman di masa lampau. Tujuan dari Recount Text adalah untuk memberikan informasi atau untuk menghibur pembaca sehingga tidak terdapat konflik. 1. Macam-macam Recount Text : a. Personal Recount Yaitu menceritakan tentang pengalaman pribadi penulis b. Factual Recount Yaitu laporan peristiwa yang benar-benar terjadi, seperti laporan percobaan ilmu pengetahuan, laporan kepolisian. c. Imaginative Yaitu membuat cerita imaginative lalu menuliskan peristiwa atau kejadian yang telah terjadi. 2. Struktur Recount Text adalah sebagai berikut : a. Orientation Yaitu pengenalan berupa memberikan informasi tentang siapa, dimana dan kapan peristiwa atau kejadian itu terjadi di masa lampau. b. Events Yaitu merupakan rekaman peristiwa yang terjadi, biasanya disampaikan dalam urutan kronologis, seperti : "In the first day... . And in the next day... . And in the last day... ." Pada bagian ini terdapat juga komentar pribadi tentang peristiwa atau kejadian yang diceritakan. c. Reorientation Yaitu pengulangan pengenalan yang ada di orientation, pengulangan tentang rangkuman peristiwa

atau kejadian yang diceritakan. 3. Ciri Kebahasaan Recount Text Pada saat membaca Recount Text, akan ditemukan ciri-ciri kebahasaan sebagai berikut : a. Menggunakan kalimat dalam bentuk Past Tense. Contoh : We went to Bandung last year, I was very happy. b. Menggunakan Action Verbs. Contoh : went, bought, wrote, slept, dll. c. Menggunakan Adverbs and Adverbial Phrase untuk mengungkapkan waktu, tempat dan cara. Contoh : yesterday, at school, quickly, dll. d. Menggunakan Conjunction dan Time Connectives untuk mengurutkan peristiwa atau kejadian. Contoh : but, and, after that, dll. 4. Contoh Recount Text Orientation I spent my holiday in Jogjakarta last year. I went to Prambanan Temple with my family early in the morning. Events We went to Prambanan Temple by bus and arrived at 01.00 in the afternoon. I saw many foreign tourists there. I spoke English with them. Their name are Andrew and Peter. They were very friendly. They came from New York. Prambanan Temple was crowded in holiday. We went back at 07.00 in the evening. Reorientation It was a very interesting holiday. Contoh Recount Text I want to tell you about my memorable time in Singapore. It was one of the best holidays I ever had. I shall never forget the spectacular sight of the city. NARRATIVE TEXT Narrative Text adalah teks yang menceritakan sesuatu yang imajinatif atau sesuatu yang hanya

khayalan belaka dan tujuannya hanya untuk menghibur pembaca. 1. Jenis-jenis Narrative Text Narrative Text mempunyai inti cerita yang biasanya hanya berupa imajinasi penulis atau kejadian nyata yang ditangkap oleh penulis atau bahkan bisa gabungan keduanya. Dalam berbagai sumber Narrative Text dapat ditemui dalam bentuk : a. fables (Cerita tentang binatang yang digambarkan berprilaku seperti manusia) b. fairy stories (Cerita yang bersifat fantastik, penuh dengan keajaiban) c. mysteries d. science fiction e. romances f. horror stories g. legends h. historical narratives i. personal experience (pengalaman pribadi yang ditulis) j. ballads (balada, kisah yang bisa mengharukan pembaca, biasanya berupa cerita cinta yang tak sampai) 2. Generic Structure Narrative Text Pada Narrative Text, susunannya adalah sebagai berikut : a. Orientation Yaitu pengenalan yang berupa : cerita tentang apa (what is the story about), siapa pelaku dalam cerita itu (who is the participant), dimana cerita itu terjadi (where is the place setting) dan kapan cerita itu terjadi (when is the time setting). b. Complication atau Problem Yaitu pada paragraf ini yang menjadi inti dari narrative text. Tanpa ada permasalahan, text ini hanyalah berupa paparan peristiwa satu yang diikuti dengan peristiwa yang lain. Masalah yang timbul dapat dibedakan menjadi : - Natural Conflict Yaitu permasalahan yang timbul karena pelaku cerita berhadapan dengan kekuatan alam. - Social Conflict Yaitu permasalahan yang timbul karena para pelaku itu saling berhadapan. Mereka bertemu pada waktu yang sama dengan berbeda kepentingan. - Psychological Conflict Yaitu Permasalahan yang timbul ketika pelaku cerita itu berhadapan dengan dirinya sendiri. Pertentangan antara nilai baik dan buruk, antara sifat rakus dan tenggang rasa. c. Resolution

Yaitu masalah dapat diatasi. Dalam Narrative text, setiap permasalahan yang muncul harus ada penyelesaiannya, bisa ditutup dengan akhir yang menyenangkan (happy ending) atau tidak sedikit berakhir tragis, menyedihkan (sad ending). d. Re-Orientation Hanya untuk Optional . 3. Ciri Kebahasaan Narrative Text a. Menggunakan pola kalimat Simple Past Tense b. Biasanya dimulai dengan kata keterangan waktu (Adverbs of Time) . Seperti : long time ago..., once, one, once upon a time. 4. Contoh Narrative Text Kancil and Crocodile Story Kancil, the small but clever mouse deer, had many enemies in the forest. Fortunately, he was quickwitted, so that every time his life was threatened, he managed to escape. One of his greatest enemies was Crocodile, who lived in the river that bordered the forest. Many times Crocodile had tried to capture the small mouse deer. Crocodile was big, but he was not very clever. Kancil was able to trick him every time. One day it was very hot. There was no wind at all to refresh the thirsty plants and trees of the forest. It was in the middle of the dry season. For many weeks no rain had fallen so that the little creeks where the small animals used to drink had dried up. Kancil was walking alone in the forest; he was very thirsty. He had walked a long way; looking for a brook where he could quench his thirst, but he had found only dry mud in the once gay rippling brooks. It was very quiet in the forest. All the animals seemed to sleep. Even the birds did not sing in the trees. Kancil finally decided to go to the river that bordered the forest. Usually he avoided going there as he knew that Crocodile was always on the look-out for him, waiting for an opportunity to catch him. When he arrived at the river. Kancil looked cautiously around him. There was no body to be seen. The clear river water mirrored blindly the rays of the sun. step by step Kancil approached the water. His sharp eyes looked right and left; his pointed ears strained to catch the slightest sound. But no danger seemed to threaten him this time. Relieved, he bent his head to enjoy the cool water. Suddenly, his glance fell upon an object that was floating not far away from where he stood. It was a blackish thing. It looked like a fallen branch ………. Or, like the back of crocodile! Kancil jumped back, surprised and thoughtful. But he was also very thirsty. How could he possibly know whether the thing there in the river was really a log or a crocodile? Then he smiled a little as he hit upon an idea. In a clear voice he shouted, “ Hey! There, you who are in the river. If you are crocodile, don’t answer me, but if you are only a long of wood, tell me your name!” Now it was really Crocodile who was floating in the river. He had seen Kancil approaching and he was waiting for him to bend his head to drink. At the very moment when Kancil did not look.

Crocodile would catch him. Without thinking any further, Crocodile answered Kancil in his gruff voice, “Don’t be afraid, I’m only a harmless log!” Immediately, Kancil ran away as fast as his leg could carry him, while shouting over his shoulder, “O, stupid Crocodile, have you ever heard a log of wood talk?” A fortnight later, however, Kancil forgot this incident. The dry season was not over yet and it seemed to be hotter than ever. Kancil ed the cool, fresh river water. How wonderful it would be take a bath in it! He decided to try his luck once again. This time there was nothing suspicious to be seen, so Kancil went to the water and drank to his heart’s content. It was very quite, and also very hot. Without thinking any further Kancil went down into the river and began to splash himself. In his delight he forgot all about danger. He pick up a dry twig that was floating by and began to beat the water with it. He made so much noise that he woke up….who else, but old crocodile who was sleeping in the neighborhood. “Well, well, this seem to be my lucky day,” thought Crocodile. In a flash he shot out of his hiding place and all of a sudden. Kancil felt sharp teeth biting into one of his legs. It hurt him very much, but though he was shocked and frightened Kancil did not lose his wits. Without hesitation he dipped the dry twig into the water and in a mocking tone he said, “stupid old log of wood, do you really think you have got me? It is only a twig you have in your mouth, not my leg. Here is my leg’ catch it if you can!” Kancil moved the twig rapidly to and in front of Crocodile’s eyes. Crocodile could not see very well in the water and above all, he really was blockhead! He believed the clever tal of the little mouse deer, released kancil’s leg and snapped his jaw on the twig. Of course, kancil did not wait one second to jump out of the water and run to the safety of the woods. Though his leg was very sore, he laughed heartily. Once more he had tricked Crocodile. Nyanyian sering juga disebut sebagai lagu yang berarti gubahan seni nada atau suara dalam urutan, kombinasi, dan hubungan temporal (biasanya diiringi dengan alat musik) untuk menghasilkan gubahan musik yang mempunyai kesatuan dan kesinambungan (mengandung irama).
