Pronunciation guide

The dialect of Latin used by the Church since the fall of the Roman empire has been Ecclesiastical Latin or EL. This dialect is distinct both from more conventional ‘Anglo-Latin’ pronunciation in the Englishspeaking world, Classical Latin, or Late Imperial Latin. This basic guide will teach you how to pronounce letters according to Ecclesiastic Latin.

Vowels:

Vowel length – if a vowel is shown with an accent, it is the ‘emphasised’ vowel of the word and should be the longest one, such as in the word ‘nátus’. This will always be shown in commonly chanted prayers. The word ‘amen’ is always pronounced with both vowels lengthened.

A is pronounced as it is in the English words ‘Father’ and ‘small’, but never as it is in the English words ‘Can’, ‘pan’, or ‘slam’ – the latter sound does not exist in EL. Try this with the words ‘cárnis’, ‘vítam’ and ‘Páter’. Be careful about this – it’s easy to fall into a habit of accidentally pronouncing the letter A in words like ‘Sanctus’ like the A in the English word ‘can’, but this is incorrect. Never pronounce the letter ‘a’ at the beginning of words like the name of the letter ‘a’, which is pronounced ‘ey’.

E is pronounced as it is in the English words ‘Red’, ‘pet’, or ‘shed’. Never add a ‘y’ sound to it, like the pronunciation of ‘ai’ in the word ‘raid’. Compare the words ‘raid’ and ‘red’ to hear the difference in the sounds. Try this with the EL words ‘te’, ‘líbera’ and ‘ómnes’ – ‘te’, ‘lee-be-ra’, ‘om-nes’.

I is pronounced as the ‘ee’ sound in the English words ‘feet’, ‘greet’, meet’, and never as the ‘I’ sound pronounced in ‘chin’, ‘pin’ or ‘critical’. Try this with the words ‘cárnis’, ‘vítam’, and ‘nóbis’ – ‘kar-nees’, ‘vee-tam’, ‘no-bees’.

O is pronounced as it is in the English words ‘for’, ‘chore’ and ‘core’, and never as the ‘o’ sound in the English words ‘go’ and ‘ho’ which sounds like the ‘ow’ sound in the words ‘throw’ and ‘mow’. Try this with the words ‘córpus’, ‘nóbis’ and ‘érgo’ – ‘kor-poos’, ‘no-bees’, ‘er-go’.

U is pronounced as the ‘oo’ sound is pronounced in the English words ‘moon’, ‘raccoon’, and ‘spoon’. Try this with the words ‘córpus’, ‘pássus’ and ‘sánctum’ – ‘kor-poos’, ‘pas-soos’, and ‘sanct-oom’. It is never pronounced as the ‘u’ sound in the English words ‘fun’, ‘pun’, ‘bun’ or ‘gun’.

Y, named ‘I græc’ or ‘the Greek i’ (as it was imported from Greek), is pronounced in EL exactly the same way the letter ‘i’ is pronounced; like the ‘ee’ sound in ‘feet’, ‘greet’ and ‘meet’. Try this with the words ‘mystérium’ and ‘symbólum’ – ‘mee-ste-ree-oom’ and ‘seem-bol-oom’.

Vowel dipthongs:

Dipthongs are two-letter sounds, like the sounds ‘th’ and ‘ch’ in English. In EL, there are vowel dipthongs and consonant dipthongs. In this book, vowel dipthongs will always be written merged to show that they are one sound.

Æ/æ and Œ/œ are both pronounced the same way as the letter ‘e’ is in EL; as it is in the English words ‘Red’, ‘pet’, or ‘shed’. Never add a ‘y’ sound to it, like the pronunciation of ‘ai’ in the word ‘raid’. Again, compare the sound between the words ‘red’ and ‘raid’. Try this with the EL word ‘ætérnam’ – ‘e-ternam’.

If you see two vowels next to each other uned, pronounce both letters separately; don’t merge them into a single sound.

Au, eu and ay are pronounced as single syllables, but the sounds of each letter in the pairs are heard, with emphasis on the first letter. Try this with the words ‘gaudiósa’, and ‘déus’ – ‘gau-dee-o-sa’ and ‘deoos’. Ei is also pronounced this way, but ONLY after the letter H, as in the word ‘Hei’ – ‘ey’; otherwise it is pronounced as two separate letters as in the word ‘méi’ – ‘me-ee’.

When the letter U is pronounced after Q or NG and is followed by another vowel, it is pronounced as single syllable with that second vowel, such as in the words ‘qui’, ‘sánguis’, ‘quæ’, etc – ‘kwee’, ‘sangwees’, ‘kw-e’.

Consonants:

The letter C before the vowels e, æ, œ, i or y is pronounced like the ‘ch’ in the English word ‘Church’. Try this with the words ‘cǽlum’ and ‘Cecília’- ‘che-loom’ and ‘che-chee-lee-a’.

Cc is pronounced as a ‘double ch’ sound, which can also be described as a ‘t-ch’ sound. Try this with the words ‘écce’ and ‘síccitas’ – ‘et-che’ and ‘see-tchee-tas’.

Sc is pronounced like the ‘sh’ in English the words ‘shed’, ‘shore’ and ‘sheep’. Try the word ‘descéndit’ – ‘de-shen-deet’. In all other cases, the letter C is pronounced the same as the English letter K, including where it appears before H. Try the words ‘cárnis’, ‘máchina’ and ‘córpus’ – ‘kar-nees’, ‘ma-kee-na’, ‘kor-poos’.

The letter G is pronounced ‘softly’, as in the word ‘generous’ (similar to the English letter J) before e, æ, i and y. Try this in the words ‘mági’, ‘génitor’, ‘Regína’ – ‘ma-jee’, ‘je-nee-tor’, ‘Re-jee-na’.

GN is pronounced like the ‘gn’ sound in French and Italian, like in the words ‘signor’, ‘romagne’ or ‘bolognese’. This is similar to a pronunciation of ‘ny’ in English – try this with the words ‘Régnum’ and ‘Magníficat’ – ‘Re-nyoom’, ‘Ma-nyee-fee-cat’.

H is pronounced as a glottal stop at the beginning of words, such as in the words ‘hac’ and ‘hódie’ – ‘ak’ and ‘o-dee-e’. This also takes place elsewhere in some words, such as ‘inhabitabunt’ – ‘in-‘ab-eet-aboont’. This is similar to the sound made in Cockney English instead of the letter ‘t’ in the word ‘butter’, or the sounds at the beginning of the vowels in the phrase ‘Uh oh!’.

In some other cases, the letter H is pronounced as a ‘hard h’ - something between a ‘kh’ sound and a ‘h’ sound, as in the words ‘tráhe’ and ‘níhil’ – ‘tra-khe’, ‘nee-kheel’. In words inherited from Hebrew with H in the middle, the H is pronounced as a glottal stop.

The letter J is called ‘long i’ in EL and is pronounced the same as the letter ‘y’ is, but is the way the letter is written at the beginning of words. Try this in ‘Jésu’, ‘éjus’ and ‘judicáre’ – ‘Ye-soo‘, ‘E-yoos’, ‘Yoo-deeca-re’.

The letter R is always pronounced with a ‘roll’. Take care not to omit this sound. Try this in the word ‘cárnis’. Always pronounce the letter R before a vowel as part of the same syllable – for example, the word ‘dilígere’ – ‘dee-lee-je-re’.

S is pronounced the same way as it is in English and is never transformed into a ‘z’ sound. Try this in the word ‘misericórdiæ’ – ‘mee-se-ree-kor-dee-e’.

T is pronounced the same way it is in English, except with Ti. Ti pronounced with any other letter following, such as tia, tio, etc is pronounced ‘tsee’. Try this with the words ‘sapientía’, ‘grátia’, and ‘lætítia’ – ‘sa-pee-en-tsee-a’, ‘gra-tsee-a’, and ‘le-tee-tsee-a’.

Th is pronounced as a T. Try this with the words ‘Thómas’ and ‘Cathólicam’ – ‘To-mas’ and ‘Ka-to-leekam’.

X is pronounced ‘ggs’, such as in the word ‘exércitus’ – ‘eggs-er-chee-toos’. Xc is pronounced ‘ksh’ before e, æ, œ, i or y. Try this with the word ‘excélsis’ – ‘ek-shel-sees’. Xc is pronounced as a separate X and C in other cases. Try this with ‘excussórum’ – ‘Eggs-koos-so-room’.

Z is pronounced ‘dz’. Try this in the word ‘Elízabeth’ – ‘E-lee-dza-bet’.

All other consonants are pronounced the same as in English – B, D, F, K, L, M, N, P and V.

Double consonants must both be sounded out. Try this with the words ‘válle’, ‘promíttunt’ – ‘val-le’, ‘pro-meet-toont’.
