The inaugural season of the tournament started on 18 April 2008 and lasted for 46 days with 59 matches scheduled, out of which 58 took place and 1 was washed out due to rain. The final was played in DY Patil Stadium, Nerul, Navi Mumbai. Every team played each other both at home and away in a round robin system. The top four ranking sides progressed to the knockout stage of semi-finals followed by a final. Rajasthan Royals defeated Chennai Super Kings in a last ball thriller and emerged as the inaugural IPL champions.
The 2009 season coincided with the general elections in India. Owing to concerns regarding players' security, the venue was shifted to South Africa. The format of the tournament remained same as the inaugural one. Deccan Chargers, who finished last in the first season, came out as eventual winners defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final.
The third season opened in January 2010 with the auction for players. 66 players were on offer but only 11 players were sold. In this season, Deccan Chargers did not play at their preferred home location of Hyderabad, India due to the ongoing political crisis in the Telangana region . The new bases for the champions this season were Nagpur, Navi Mumbai and Cuttack. Four teams qualified for the semi-finals. The first semi-final was won by Mumbai Indians who defeated Bangalore Royal Challengers by 35 runs. Chennai Super Kings defeated Deccan Chargers in the second semi-final. The final was played between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Chennai Super Kings won by a margin of 22 runs.
Former West Indies great Brian Lara, dashing Australian batsman Adam Gilchrist and hard-hitting Chris Gayle are among the overseas players who have been put in the top price bracket for the January 8 and 9 players' auction for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League(IPL). Around 400 foreign players have expressed their willingness to be a part of the cash-rich event. They have been classified in six brackets ranging from $20,000 to $400,000. Defending World T20 champions England have six players - Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Swann, Luke Wright and Michael Yardy - in top bracket. New Zealand have their skipper Daniel Vettori, deputy Ross Taylor and wicketkeeper batsman Brendon McCullum in the top rung. The Australians have only three players - Shaun Marsh, Gilchrist and Brett Lee - in the top bracket base price. The Hussey brothers Mike and David are in the second base price bracket of $300,000, while T20 and ODI specialist David Warner is in the third bracket with a base price of $200,000. It is also learnt that, Mitchell Johnson, Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting's names did not figure in the list that the IPL governing council had sent to the franchisees. Surprisingly, Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara is missing from the top group as only two Sri Lankans - Mahela Jayawardene and TM Dilshan - have found place. South African captain Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers are in the elite group as well. There are however no Bangaldeshis in the top bracket as Shakib Al-Hasan gets the highest base price of $200,000, while Mohammed Ashraful and Tamim Iqbal have base prices of $50,000 and 100,000 respectively. Top Bracket Base Price ($400,000) England: Kevin Pietersen, James Anderson, Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad, Luke Wright, Michael Yardy New Zealand: Daniel Vettori, Ross Taylor, Brendon McCullum Australia: Adam Gilchrist, Shaun Marsh, Brett Lee South Africa: Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers. Sri Lanka: TM Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene West Indies: Chris Gayle, Brian Lara
According to a recent study by a UK-based brand valuation consultancy, the brand value of the IPL has more than doubled to USD 4.13 billion (over 18 crore (US$ 3.98 million)) from USD 2.01 billion in 2009. The franchises have been a part of this growth. Chennai Super Kings, who were ranked fourth last year, has emerged the most valued franchise in 2010. The CSK franchise has moved up the ladder to number one with a valuation of USD 48.4 million. The Kolkata Knight Riders co-owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan comes in second with a valuation of USD 46 million and the Rajasthan Royals, co-owned by Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty comes in third with USD 45.2 million. The Royal Challengers Bangalore, owned by Vijay Mallya, is ranked fourth with a valuation of USD 41.9 million and is followed by the Mumbai Indians (USD 40.8 million), Delhi Daredevils (USD 40.5 million) and Kings XI Punjab ( USD 36.1 million). The Deccan Chargers are at the base with a valuation of USD 34.4 million.
The IPL is predicted to bring the BCCI income of
approximately US$1.6 billion, over a period of five to ten years. All of these revenues are directed to a central pool, 40% of which will go to IPL itself, 54% to franchisees and 6% as prize money. The money will be distributed in these proportions until 2017, after which the share of IPL will be 50%, franchisees 45% and prize money 5%. The IPL signed up Kingfisher Airlines as the official umpire partner for the series in a 106 crore (US$ 24.06 million) (approximately £15 million) deal. This deal sees the Kingfisher Airlines brand on all umpires' uniforms and also on the giant screens during third umpire decisions.[19]
Cheerleaders The IPL has been criticised by a few politicians and feminists for bringing in foreign cheerleaders, which is seen by many to not be in the traditional spirit of the game, as well as being against some Indian sensibilities. Two cheerleaders from London were asked to leave the ground at Mohali “because of the colour of their skin” by Wizcraft International Entertainment, which handles the team Kings XI Punjab. Ellesha Newton and Sherinne Anderson, both from London and of African ancestry were allegedly barred from entering the stadium by employees of Wizcraft International Entertainment on the pretext that "people don’t like dark girls here". Both the girls also allege that an employee referred to them with the racial slur ″nigger″. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said a probe would be initiated by the IPL only if the two women officially complain to IPL commissioner Lalit Modi. BCCI and IPL officials are surprised that the two cheerleaders did not complain about the alleged racist behaviour while they were in India and spoke about it only after they returned to London. "We have not received any complaint from any cheerleaders that they were asked to leave by the Mohali-based Kings XI Punjab franchise recently because of the colour of their skin," BCCI t secretary M.P. Pandove said in Mohali.
On 25 April 2008, following the King's XI Punjab (KXIP)'s victory in
the Indian Premier League over the Mumbai Indians at Mohali, KXIP player Sreesanth was slapped under his eye by Harbhajan Singh, the stand-in captain of Mumbai Indians. The incident came to light as Sreesanth was caught by TV cameras sobbing inconsolably on the field before the presentation ceremony. Sreesanth had since downplayed the incident saying he had no complaints against Harbhajan who was "like an elder brother" to him. Harbhajan's team had lost their third consecutive match when he apparently reacted violently to Sreesanth's approaching him and reportedly saying "hard luck". The footage of the slap has not yet been released for public viewing. The BCCI launched an investigation into the incident and decided to ban Harbhajan for the remainder 11 matches of the Twenty20 tournament & resulted in losing

The third edition of DLF IPL is facing more issues compared to the 2nd edition even before the start of the game. Telengana agitation : The ongoing Telengana agitation has prompted the IPL authorities to cancel all the matches to be held Hyderabad. This has evoked strong protest from the Deccan Chargers and they threatened to withdraw from the tournament. However the issue seems to have been settled by re-scheduling the matches at Cuttack which is nearer to Hyderabad. Participation of Pakistan Players : The Shivsena Categorically stated that they do not welcome the Pakistan players to India and this prompted the IPL team owners not to select the Pakistan players in their teams. This evoked adverse response in Pakistan .The statement issued by the actor Shahrukh Khan in this regard further created protests in Mumbai by Shivsena. Shane Warne’s suggestion : Now the IPL Rajasthan Royal’s captain has suggested shifting the IPL matches to South Africa due to security reasons. The recent Pune bomb blast has raised fear in the minds of international players and the Australian players are waiting for the advice of their security expert Reg Dickason. It is learnt that the Australian players will take a decision whether to travel to India or not based on their security advisor.
In what could add more fire to already burning Indian
Premier League issue, today in an emergency meeting of the Indian Premier League’s Governing Council, the BCCI scrapped Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab and terminated the contracts with these two teams. BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said “It was unanimously decided that the Franchise agreements with KPH Dream Cricket Pvt. Ltd. and Jaipur IPL Cricket Pvt. Ltd. be terminated forthwith, based on the legal opinions obtained by BCCI in the matters.”
The reasons cited for this termination are the irregularities
during the period of their contract and severe breach of and conditions of IPL franchise agreement. On the other hand IPL Kochi got yet another chance to solve the issue as soon as possible so that they can participate in IPL4. “It was further unanimously decided to issue a notice to the Unincorporated t Venture holding the Kochi franchise calling upon them to resolve all their disputes and form a t venture company which will hold the IPL franchise rights,” the BCCI said. According to some news sources, the BCCI has acted after legal opinion x from the Attorney General of India as Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI are alleged to have been involved in serious breaches as per the reports from the Enforcement Directorate, the IT and Ministry of Corporate Affairs and also has also violated FEMA.
Even if case of lalit modi is in HIGH COURT but it’s a
highly controversial issue as the creator of IPL had misappropriated the funds, selling franchises to his relatives (Rajasthan royals) selling franchises to unconfirmed owners (kochi& pune).but he will be always thanked to make Indian cricket such a entertaining extravaganza by mixing it with glamour of bollywood & making it world`s most costly league, which we are proud to be.
