Explain the mechanism of diabetes mellitus

Introduction to the three major types of diabetes

The mechanism:  Body breaks down sugars and carbohydrates into glucose in normal body.  Glucose will need insulin, a hormone, to fuel the body as energy.  Patients with diabetes mellitus will not be able to produce or use enough insulin.  Glucose build up in blood. High level can damage the tiny blood vessels in kidney, heart, eyes or nervous system.  Diabetes Mellitus can lead to heart disease, stroke and kidney diseases.

Type 1 diabetes  Also called as insulin-dependent diabetes.  Often begins in childhood  An autoimmune condition. Caused by body attacking its own pancreas with antibodies.  May be caused by a genetic predisposition – faulty beta cells in pancreas.  Associated with diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy and heart disease. Type 2 diabetes  The most common type among adult.  Also called as adult-onset diabetes.

Caused by insufficient production of insulin or insulin resistance – body’s cells are resistant to insulin  People who are obese are at high risk of this type of diabetes.  Can cause major health complications such as heart disease and stroke. Gestational Diabetes  Triggered by pregnancy  Diagnosed in the mid or late pregnancy  Resolves after pregnancy but put the mother in a risk of Type 2 Diabetes  Risks are usually greater to the baby than to the mother.

Explain the differences between Type 1 and Type 2

Differences

• Type 1 is lack of insulin and Type 2 has no use of the insulin. • Type 1 develop during childhood while Type 2 develop at any age. • Type 1 is caused by immune attacking cells releasing insulin but Type 2 is caused by body’s cells resistant of insulin • Episodes of low blood sugar level is common in Type 1 but none in Type 2 • Type 1 cannot be prevented but Type 2 can be prevented with healthy lifestyle
