Melodic Metal Melodic Metal is a broad style of heavy metal music and is the opposite of Extreme Metal. As its name suggests, music is very melodic: adding classical influences, symphonies and often rapid smooth solos. Clean vocals are usually used, but a mix of Death Vocals are sometimes incorporated. Genres include: Goth Metal, Symphonic Metal, Power Metal, Progressive Metal, Classic Metal and Doom Metal. Many genres, however use both Extreme and Melodic metal in their music, such as double bass drumming in Power Metal, and death vocals in Gothic Metal. In addition Death/Doom Metal has a number of elements from Death Metal, notably death vocals. Indeed whole sub-genres are given to the combined styles, such as Melodic Death Metal, and Symphonic Black Metal.

Melodic death metal Melodic death metal (often referred to as melodeath) is a subgenre of death metal. It contains more melodic guitar riffs and solos, which are sometimes acoustic, and also occasional 'clean' singing as opposed to traditional death grunt vocals. The song structures are generally more progressive, using diverse themes throughout the song. Death and Morbid Angel, often considered the "godfathers" of death metal, are primary influences on the genre, and its progenitors include At the Gates and Carcass, with the release of their Heartwork album. Sentenced is also often credited with creating the first melodeath album with the release of North From Here. Some credit In Flames as the band which popularised the sub-genre, some even credit them for inventing the subgenre. Amorphis are also worth noting, because of their 1992 The Karelian Isthmus album. Melodic death metal, though from the same geographic area as black metal, rarely speaks of Satanism or the downfall of Christianity, but has more poetic themes, which vary greatly. Traditionally, lyrics deal with more expressionist themes. One extremely important piece of the melodic death jigsaw puzzle is the Gothenburg style, named after the city from which it originated. It is not certain what band originally started the Gothenburg sound, but it is widely accepted that In Flames, At the Gates, and Dark Tranquillity are the three major popularizers of the style, and some of the only widely known bands to practice it, with newer bands such as Arch Enemy and The Haunted appearing and practicing the style only recently. It was originally thought that nearly all melodic death metal bands are from the Scandinavian and Northern European regions, especially from Sweden and Finland, however, in recent years, the genre has gained somewhat of a popularity boost, acquiring a small underground status in the North American areas of Florida, New York, California, and some parts of Canada, especially among North American fans of the Scandinavian bands which still pioneer the genre today but are looking for some closerto-home bands.

Melodic black metal Melodic black metal is one of the many subgenres inside the Heavy Metal World. Melodic black metal is a style of music that is classified according to several key aspects. The style encomes typical black metal characteristics, such as growling vocals (death grunt), blast beats and heavily distorted guitars. The music style however differs from traditional black metal in several ways. Fast tempos are generally uncommon as the music is normally slower. The songs, even though generally have no choruses, have a more defined structure than its original counterpart. Heavy guitar riffs are used throughout the songs even though clean guitar sections are generally incorporated. Aside from including the traditional Bass, Drums, Vocals and guitar, many, if not all Melodic Black Metal bands also incorporate keyboards, thefore giving the music a more melodic atmosphere (Hence the name Melodic Black Metal) The genre reputable draws its roots from black metal and melodic death metal, even though Symphonic Metal is generally considered a big influence as well. Melodic black metal is sometimes confused with gothic metal, Doom Metal, and symphonic metal due to similarities in the styles (slow tempos, occasional death grunts, clean guitars, defined structures), which results in the erroneous genre classification for many bands and albums. Melodic black metal songs usually have a typical structure and characteristics. Most of them are composed in the Symphonic Minor scale, which gives the songs an "evil" feeling. Many of the songs incorporate heavy guitar power chords but unlike traditional black metal, the songs have at least some control on the volume, allowing the music to blend instead of sounding too "noisy". The songs usully begin with a melodic introduction, be it clean guitar or keyboards and usually move on to a more aggressive and distorted sound as the piece advances. Unlike typical black metal songs, symphonic black metal compositions have, on the most part, very clearly defined bridges. Songs go from introduction to cerse to a prechorus to "chorus" to Verse to Preochorus to chorus and then to a bridge. In a bridge the music can turn quite mellow and unlike black metal. The bridge however, turns back into the verse or the black metal sound with a very swift and unexpected turn (usually a loud death grunt). Unlike traditional black metal, melodic black metal usually revolves around deep structure and accessibility. The lyrical themes and main attributes, however, still come from black metal, with melodic black metal's lyrical subjects usually remaining the same (although many melodic black metal bands are not as aggressively anti-Christian). most black metal bands, the lyrics are usually quite aggressive, whether added intentionally or bearing the aggression of the lyricist. Heavy drumming and highly structured guitar riffs (usually played with what some call reverse power chords and tremolo picking) are the most prominent feature of the genre, entailing melodic structure deep within the composition and sound. Symphonic Black Metal has remained, on the most part uniquely a underground phenomenae. The genre's most popular bands are quite unknown (with the exception of cradle of filth). Most "popular" bands and less unknown are probably Immortal, Burzum, and Dimmu Borgir from Norway. The appearance of Symphonic Black Metal musicians has remained, on the most part very close to the appearance of normal black metal bands. Band use corpse paint for live performances, spikes and black clothing. They generally use pseudonyms or stage names and chose to remain unknown in mainstream circles. Melodic Metal What in the hell is.......well melodic metal to me is all the bands that were branded with the term glam, just because the music they played included alot of pure melody, and their music just really does not fit in with the other glam bands. Melody of course is the number one important factor in this subgenre, the music is easy to listen to, and usually includes alot of ballads and mid tempo songs that just ask to be played over and over again, since they have that undefinable hook. Its also very polished, sometimes so much that its unbearable at times. Alot of the songs are about love and sex as well, which also helps blur the line between melodic metal and glam.
