Other creativity-enhancingfeaturesare the wide ASA/ISO range of 12 to 6400, focusing screens,the built-inLED ready-light interchangeable as well as capability for multiple-exposureand motor drive photography.Additionally,the FM2 has a battery powersaving feature:a light touch of the lockableshutter release button activates the meter and the LED exposure display system,which automaticallyswitches off some 30 seconds later.To obtain the best resultswith the FM2, be sure to keep this instructionmanual handy until you've fully mastered operation-just a few minutes for many years of rewarding photography.

Make blank exposures until the frame COunter is reaCheS frame 1. Put the film advance 6 A 3f t lever back into place. Closethe camerabackand pushthe film advancelever into place.When you're not usingthe camera,you shouldset the film advanceleverto this positionwhich locks the shutter release button and keeps the exposureindicatorlamps inside the viewfinderswitchedoff even if the shutterreleasebuttonis accidentally pressed. Note:Evenif the exposure indicatorlampis lit, it willautomatically be switchedoff in approx. 30 sec, and the exposuremeasuringcircuit willsimultaneously becutoff.

Frame counter @

The additivetype framecounteris graduatedfrom S '1 2 4up to 36 in evennumberswith odd numbersindicatedby white dotsin betweenthe evennumbers.Evenif there'sno film in the camera,the frame counteris operative,advancingby a single frame every time the film advancelever is fully wound.After rollof f ilm,the counterwill not operframe36 of a 36-exposure pressthe shutterreleasebuttonand ate evenif you repeatedly wind the film advancelever;film will be advanced,however, untilthe actualend of the film roll.The counteris automatically resetto S whenthe camerabackis opened.

Shutter release button @ The shutterreleasebuttonalso servesto activatethe FM2's built-inexposuremeter.When the film advanceleveris in the flushposition,the shutterreleasebuttonis lockedand will not operate.To releasethe buttonfrom its lockedposition,pull out the film advanceleverto the standoffposition.Slightpressure on the shutterreleasebuttonwill then switchon both the exposuremeterand the LED exposureinformation displayinside theviewfinder.The meterand the displayremainon for approx. 30 sec. afterthe fingeris removedf rom the button,afterwhich theyare automatically switchedoff to conservebatterypower. Pressingthe shutterreleasebuttonall the way down releases the shutter When you depressthe button,touch the fingerguard@ with the tip of your indexfingerand depressit lightly with smooth,even pressure.This makesshutterreleaseoperationsmoothand stable.With a shuttersoeedof 1/30 sec. or

ASA|ISO film speed dial @ The ASA/ISOscale on the dial has numberedsettingsfor speedsf romASA/lSO12to 6400.Thedots betweeneach oairof ASA/lSOnumbersstandfor intermediate settings,such as 64, 80, etc. The illustration above gives the speedsfor all intermediatesettings.ASA/lSO100and 400 are indicatedin red as theyare usedquiteoften. ASA/lSOis a numericalratingof the film'ssensitivity to a given amountof light.The higherthe number,the greaterthe sensitivity,and vice versa.The ASA/lSOof your film is indicatedon the cartridgeitself.lt is also printedon the film cartonand on the datasheetoackedinside.

Shutter speed dial 6DI erposure determlnation Setting the shutter speed Toset the shutterspeed,turn the shutterspeeddialto the right or left untilthe desiredshutterspeednumberclick-stops and is alignedwith the shutterspeedindex@. The dial has indications for B (bul'b) andfor shutterspeedsf rom 1 to 'l/4OOO sec.The250 engraved in redindicates thefastestsyncspeedfor an electronic flashunit.On B, the shuttercurtains@ remainopenfor as long as the shutterreleasebuttonis keptdepressed. 1 is for indicatingonesecond,2tor 112sec.,60 for 1/60sec.andso on.Oneof the two adingnumbers,excludingB is two timesor 112as much as the exposureamountof the other number.Note that shutter speeds betweenprinted numbers(i.e., intermediate speeds)cannot be used. Since you can alwaysconfirmthe you don't haveto shutterspeednumberinsidethe viewfinder, see the shutterspeeddialas vou turn it.

Setting the aperture The lensaperturedeterminesthe amountof lightreachingthe film plane.Generally,when you turn the aperturering one graduation in the directionof the largernumbers,the amountis reducedby 112.(tnis is what stoppingdownby one graduation means.)On the otherhand,whenthe apertureringis turnedone graduationin the directionof smallernumbers,the amountof light is doubled.(tnis is knownas openingthe apertureby 1 stop.)Thelensapertureringclicksat the positionof the numbers lensaperturesare usableconengravedalthoughintermediate tinuously. Lensaperturegreatlyaffectsdepthof f ield(seepage 2B).With the exceptionof a few speciallenses,Nikkorano

o Lenswithoutautomaticdiaphragm (PC-ruikkor tens) First, determinethe correct exposureby adjustingthe shutterspeedand aperture.Then,focus at full aperture. Shiftthe lensso that you get the desiredcomposition. Returnthe aperturesettingto the presetpositionandshoot. . Exposure measurement in special cases The exposuremeter of the Nikon FM2 adopts the centerweightedexposuremeasurementsystem in which approximately60ok of the total amountof light is measuredby the 12mm-diameter circleat the centerof thefocusingscreen.
