Mike Scheidt CST 110 12/12/14 Amy Wolff Persuasive Speech Self Critique 1. When observing my persuasive speech, I saw that I utilized some effective structural elements that strengthened the delivery of my speech. Topic points that were covered were presented in an order that flowed well. I initially gave some background information on what goes into the donation process so the audience could understand better what I was discussing as I progressed into the more personal and persuasive areas of the speech. This made presentation as a whole a lot easier to understand. Along with good organization, I felt that the PowerPoint I used throughout the presentation had many useful photos to help the audience picture in their minds what I was discussing at each point. Each slide also corresponded with the main points of the speech aiding with the flow as well. 2. After observing my speech from a different perspective, I noticed there were some key structural elements that I mistakenly left out of my speech. One of the main faults was the lack of a proper amount of pathos and ethos appeal within the presentation. I presented an abundant amount of information during my speech to inform the audience of the hard facts relating to blood donation, but it sounded too much like an informative speech. Adding more pathos and ethos appeal would have increased the power of persuasion relating to my topic. Along with this, I realized that I did not propose a real solution to the problem at hand that

could help make more people donate blood in the long run. This is a key factor within the speech that could be worked on in the future. 3. One of the things that I did well throughout the presentation was my use of good non-verbal messaging. A key factor that I improved on from my last speech was not rocking back and forth behind the podium and standing tall as well. Having good body structure while giving a speech shows that I am comfortable with the topic that I am discussing, along with being less distracting as well. Along with good body structure, my tone of voice throughout the speech was proper and showed enthusiasm for what I am talking about. Having a good tone of voice helps keep the speech interesting whereas a dull voice would simply drag on. 4. Through reflection, there were some key nonverbal aspects that I needed to work on. A main factor that I noticed was that my eye was very sporadic throughout the presentation. I had a tendency to continuously look up and down from my notecards when I should have tried to scan the audience for longer periods of time. Along with relatively poor eye , I felt that at some points I tended to stumble over some of the words which was a little distracting at times. By having the speech flow in a smoother matter, I feel like it could have been much more effective than it was.
