USO DE LAS PREPOSICIONES Las preposiciones pueden realizar distintas funciones: - Servir de enlace entre dos palabras o distintos elementos en la oración: I'll see you at five o'clock / Te veré a las cinco - Pueden acompañar a un verbo sirviendo de enlace a su complemento. En este caso, pueden no alterar el significado del verbo o alterarlo con lo que constituyen una palabra distinta. To look / Mirar (no altera el significado del verbo) To look after / Cuidar de (se altera el significado del verbo) - Cuando ponemos un verbo después de una preposición, en inglés normalmente se utiliza la forma ' ing' y no el infinitivo. You shouldn’t go to India without visiting the Taj Mahal. No deberías ir a la India sin visitar el Taj Mahal. I’m interested in studying psychology. / Estoy interesado en estudiar psicología.
Reglas generales - Preposiciones POSICIÓN DE LAS PREPOSICIONES Generalmente, se colocan delante del sustantivo o del pronombre, excepto en los siguientes casos: a.) Con el pronombre relativo, cuando va seguido de preposición, ésta puede colocarse en la posición final. The girls I study with / Las muchachas con las que estudio (en lugar de: The girls with whom I study) b.) En frases interrogativas cuando empiezan por un pronombre interrogativo: Who were you speaking to? / ¿con quién estabas hablando? (en lugar de: To whom were you speaking?)
LA PREPOSICIÓN Y LA CONTRACCIÓN La contracción española, es decir, la fusión de una preposición con el artículo definido (al, del) no existen en inglés. Se traducen siempre por la preposición seguida del artículo definido y separado de ella (al = a el) (del = de el): Tell it to the chairman / Dígaselo al presidente

PREPOSICIONES DE TIEMPO Las preposiciones utilizadas con relación al tiempo pueden resultar algo complicadas para aprender. Probablemente obtengas mejores resultados si te aprendes unos cuantos ejemplos. Veamos... AT? IN? ON? BY? AT se usa con las horas (at 10:00 am), momentos del día (at night) y con nombres de festividades (at Christmas, at Easter). IN se refiere a partes o divisiones del día (in the evening), meses (in November), estaciones del año (in winter) y años (in 2004). IN se usa también para señalar un período en el cual algo tendrá lugar (in nine months' time). ON se usa para los días de la semana (on Monday), para partes o divisiones del día (mencionando el día de la semana) (on Monday mornings) y para las fechas (on 15th May, on November 5th). BY indica el último momento/hora/fecha en que una acción será finalizada. Normalmente es similar en significado a before. BY se usa generalmente con tiempos futuros (I will have finished my project by Saturday). BETWEEN? AMONG? La regla básica, BETWEEN para 2 y AMONG para más de 2 generalmente es efectiva. Sin embargo, si las dos cosas están mezcladas (variedades de flores, galletas, etc) se prefiere utilizar AMONG (She walked among the roses and dahlias). Por el cntrario, si hay pocas cosas y a éstas se las considera aisladamente, se utiliza BETWEEN (She walked between the three mountains). TO? TOWARDS? TO implica la idea de destino mientras que TOWARDS sólo implica dirección o sentido. Por ejemplo: He walked to the village, implica que él llegó allí. He walked towards the village, sólo implica que él caminó en esa direción, pero desconocemos si ha llegado. FROM? OUT OF? OUT OF es más específico que FROM y expresa "desde el interior". El opuesto de OUT OF es INTO (He came into the house).

Método para aprender las preposiciones en inglés
1) Comparamos dos preposiciones que se confundan habitualmente, por ejemplo, “in” y “on” e intentamos aprendernos la pronunciación correcta con la ayuda de un archivo de audio (en word reference com lo tienen). Nota: Puedes aprenderte por separado aquellas preposiciones que no se confundan entre si, asociándolas a las palabras con las que se utilizan habitualmente.
2)Buscamos en www.wordreference.com (o en otras páginas, ver arriba) los significados y usos de las dos preposiciones que vamos a comparar. Nota: Si no estamos en internet tenemos que hacerlo con un buen diccionario.
3) Seleccionamos aquellos usos y significados que más se presten a confusión, por ejemplo, “on Saturday” , “in the winter”. ¿Por qué se confunden? Porque en español frecuentemente traducimos ambas por “en” y entonces, utilizamos “in” en vez de “on”. Consejo: Antes de aprenderte cualquier preposición intenta ver qué problemas presenta cuando decides utilizarla al hablar.

4) Preparamos unos ejemplos y visualizamos una secuencia. Nota: Si lo de imaginarte una secuencia no te va, te saltas este paso y haces sólo el siguiente, repetir frases muchas veces.
5) Repetimos el sonido de las frases en voz alta varias veces. Consejo: Si no sabes cómo suena la frase en inglés, descárgate el navegador OPERA que lee en voz alta los textos en inglés.
Veamos cómo hacemos todo este proceso con “in “ y “on”.
IN Problemas que presenta: Traducciones que no se corresponden con “en” en español. -In the distance: a lo lejos -In there: allí dentro. - In sight: a la vista, etc. Nota: Fíjate en todas las traducciones que son diferentes y utiliza el método de visualizar imágenes y repetir para acordarte.
ON Problemas que presenta: La utilización de “on” es más díficil que la de “in” porque normalmente no pensamos en “on” como “en”. Por tanto, los ejemplos son más difíciles de recordar. Veamos ejemplos: -On the street. I live on that street. Vivo en esa calle.- On the right/on the left. A la izquierda, a la derecha. - On the radio: En la radio, etc. Nota: Fíjate en las traducciones y utiliza el método de visualizar imágenes y repetir para acordarte.
