SCHOOL  is an institution established by society in which the accumulated experiences of the past generations are ed on to incoming generation by means of systematized programs of institution.  the center of learning as far as education is concerned.

Social Institution  It is a group of social positions, connected by social relations, performing a social role.

Three elements of a school • 1.Teachers • 2.The pupils, students or learners • 3.The place where the teaching learning activities take place

Functions of School

Functions of School Conservation function  School conserves and preserves through its libraries and other devices recorded accumulated experiences of the past generation.

Functions of School  Instructional function  The main concern of the school , is to on the accumulated experiences of the past generation to the incoming generations.  This is performed by individuals trained for the purpose, called teachers, mentors, instructors, or professors; and the recipients of such instruction are the young learner called pupils or students.

2 KINDS OF INSTRUCTION: Enculturation-when things of the local culture are taught. Acculturation-when things of a foreign culture are taught.

Functions of School Research function  The school conducts research to improve the old ways of doing things or to discover hitherto unknown facts or systems to improve the quality of human life

 Social service function  One justification for a particular school to exist is to render some kind of social services in the place where it is located.

 The specific purposes of the school are the following:  a. Cognitive Purposes – teaching the basic cognitive skills such as reading, writing, and speaking.  b. Political Purposes – inculcation of patriotism or loyalty to the existing political order.  c. Social Purposes – concerns with the socialization of citizens into their various roles in society.  d. Economic Purposes – involves training and preparation of citizens for the world of work.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY

Relationship between the School and Community 1. The community supplies the school with the facts about new inventions, discoveries, or new ways of doing things which are necessary to transmit to the young learners. The school returns to community the usefulness and practicality of such inventions, discoveries, or new knowledge through the work of its graduates to improve the quality of human life.

School and Community • 2. The community makes available and accessible to the school instructional resources that are available in the place such as farms, rivers, natural resources, museums, libraries, industrial and commercial firms, laboratories, shops, and many others.  The school will return the service by means of the graduates applying the skills and knowledge acquired in school when they are employed.

School and Community • 3. The community or society makes possible the existence of the school by financing its operation and formulating policies. The school will return such service by improving or enhancing the social, economic, educational and scientific endeavours of society through the work of its graduates.

School and Community • 4. The school may help the community through an outreach community program to improve the economic life of the people, improve their health, raise their literacy level, beautiful the place and the like.  The community may return the service by patronizing the school, give protection to it, and cooperating with school in accomplishing its community projects.

EVALUATION OF SCHOOL

Evaluation of school • 1.Faculty  Are the faculty fully qualified educationally?  Do they have a mastery of subject matter they teach?  Are they punctual and industrious in teaching?  Are they rendering high quality of education?

Evaluation of school • 2.Students  Does the school select its students so that only those with adequate ability are allowed to take the higher and more difficult courses?  Are the students studious and resourceful?  Are the standards of ing high enough so that when the students graduate they possess the knowledge and skills required of the course they have finished?

Evaluation of school • 3.Social climate  is the school atmosphere democratic ?  Are all s, teachers and students, going about dutifully and efficiently?  Are there good human relations existing between and teachers?  Are the students satisfied with the conditions existing in school?  Do the teachers seem to be satisfied too?

Evaluation of school • 4.Facilities  Are the buildings and classrooms adequate for classroom instruction?  Are the library references adequate for the needs of the learners?  Are the pupils/students adequately supplied with textbooks and other learning materials?

Evaluation of school  Are the science laboratory and equipment adequate?  Are lighting and ventilation and cooling devices good?  Are the students or pupils are free from danger when there is fire? Earthquake? Typhoon ? Flood?

Evaluation of school 5. campus  Is the campus located in a place that is free from too many distractions from moving vehicles? from noisy people? from baring music?  Is the campus wide enough for enjoyable movement of the learners?  Is it clean and sanitary?  Is it free from floods because it has a good drainage system?

Evaluation of school 6.Relevance  Are the course offered by the school relevant to the needs of the community?  Are the skills developed by the school badly needed by the community?

Evaluation of school 7.Social service  Does the school render some kind of social service to the community where it is located? Does it have a community outreach program?  Does the school help in raising the literacy level of the people?

Evaluation of school 8.Accreditation.  Are the courses offered by school accredited and recognized by the government?  Has the school submitted some of its courses voluntary accreditation by a duly recognized and authorized accrediting agency in which the standards are higher than those required by the government?
