It is described on the Scratch website as “a programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art -- and share your (http://info.Scratch.mit.edu/About_Scratch) creations on the web.”
The name was derived from the scratching technique used by hip-hop disc jockeys that spin vinyl records back and forth with their hands to mix music clips together in creative ways. The program was launched in 2007 and “has become a vibrant online community, with sharing more than 1 million projects. Each day of the worldwide Scratch community (mostly ages eight to sixteen) roughly fifteen hundred new Scratch projects to the Web site—on average, a new project every minute. There are also links to different galleries were projects are grouped according to their nature. These are very useful for an educator using Scratch, as they contain useful teaching ideas, advice and resources that can be easily found and accessed.
Scratch Wiki
a collaboratively-written wiki available for free that provides information about the Scratch programming language, its website, history and phenomena surrounding it. The wiki is ed by the Scratch Team, but is primarily written by Scratchers. The Scratch Wiki is a popular source of information for scripts and tutorials and it continues to grow as Scratchers use it as their primary source of information. This could also include advanced articles for Scratchers around the world to build, share and see.

July 30, 2014 – ScratchJr was developed. The first prototype of the program.
ScratchJr is a mobile application released on July 30, 2014 for the iPad. It is developed by Tufts University, with grants from the National Science Foundation, to allow young kids (the target is age 5 to age 7) to easily learn programming with a system based on Scratch.
The goal of ScratchJr is to "develop and study the next generation of innovative technologies and curricular materials to integrated STEM learning in early childhood education." A version for iPads and Android tablets is currently available.
ScratchJr is highly focused on educating young children and providing them the capability to communicate technologically in the modern world. The ScratchJr team desired the following knowledge outcomes in young educators:
For children to gain a better understanding of mathematics and literacy.
For children to become familiar with classifications of various computer software and mathematical components and to build foundational knowledge structures across domains.
For children to become better problem-solvers and thinkers, as well as gain a better understanding of science and software development.
Scratch 2.0
Also known as Scratch 2, is the second, current major version of Scratch, following Scratch 1.4. It features a redesigned editor and website, and allows you to edit projects directly from your web browser as well as in an offline editor.

Whether or not it is OOP is debated in the community.
Scratch has variables and lists for data storage, arrays can be replicated.
