Introduction ZXDSL 9806H (V1.2) ZTE Broadband Universal Access System (ZXDSL 9806H for short) is a small scale integrated access device. It s ADSL/ADSL2+ and VDSL2 access. ZXDSL 9806H can be connected to the Internet either through a router/switch or by cascading to another DSLAM. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show ZXDSL 9806H networking. FIGURE 1 NETWORKING 1

Installation Precautions

The following installation precautions are applicable to local installation safety specifications: �

Installation personnel must be qualified and well trained for the installation procedure.

�

Read installation instructions carefully.

�

Lay power cable properly. Use blue cable for –48 V power, black cable for –48 V working ground and yellow/green cable or yellow cable for grounding. Do not connect power cable reversely.

�

Use a multimeter to measure the voltage.

�

The grounding resistance must be less than 1 ohm.

�

Protect fiber pigtails with bushing. Bending radius must not be too small. Do not bundle fiber pigtails too tight. Do not overlap other cables on fiber pigtails.

�

Connect subscriber cables carefully and properly.

�

Wear antistatic wrist strap while inserting a card in the shelf.

�

Label both ends of each cable.

ZXDSL 9806H is a standard 19-inch shelf with 2U height (1U = 44.45 mm). The shelf dimensions are 88.1 mm × 482.6 mm × 240 mm (Height × Width × Depth). Figure 5 shows the shelf structure.

ASTEB card provides 24 ADSL/ADSL2+ over POTS access. It transforms ATM cells to IP packets. The maximum downstream and upstream rates are 24 Mbps and 1 Mbps respectively. The transmission distance can reach up to 6.5 km. Figure 14 shows ASTEB card . FIGURE 14 ASTEB CARD

ASTDE card provides 16 ADSL/ADSL2+ over POTS access. It transforms ATM cells to IP packets. The maximum downstream and upstream rates are 24 Mbps and 1 Mbps respectively. The transmission distance can reach up to 6.5 km. Figure 15 shows ASTDE card . FIGURE 15 ASTDE CARD

Cable Connection Cable Layout Requirement Requirements for cable layout are as follows: �

Before cable layout, whether the specification, model and quantity of the cables comply with the requirements in the project drawing design and the contract.

Before laying cables, check whether the cables are damaged, whether they are available with such vouchers as delivery record and guarantee of quality.

The specification, quantity, routing direction and layout position of required cables need comply with the requirements in the project drawing design, while the length of each cable depends on its actual position.

No broken parts or ts are allowed within a single cable.

�

Lay subscriber cable and power cable separately.

�

Bind cables properly. Arrange cables in order, with even, smooth and flat bends.

�

Keep cables in the trough, avoiding other outlets blocked. Bind and fix cables where the cable goes out of the trough or makes a bend.

�

Don’t overlap or arrange optical fibers, cables, power cables and ground cables disorderly while they are laid in the same trough. If the cable is very long, coil it neatly in the middle of the cable tray instead of overlapping on other cables.

For fiber pigtails layout, keep bends as few as possible. Bind fiber pigtails with proper force. When arranging fiber pigtails on a cable tray, separate them from other cables. It is forbidden to mix optical fibers with other cables and it is also not allowed to place other cables on the fiber pigtails. Use plastic bushings for protection. Bundle redundant fiber pigtails around the top or bottom of the rack where they are unreachable. Fiber pigtails are very delicate. Handle with care to prevent it from being broken.

The bending radius of optical fiber in the trough should not be less than 38 mm ~ 40 mm. Arrange bundled optical fibers in the trough straight without any twist.

ADSL Service Feature Description ZXDSL 9806H s ADSL/ADSL2+ service access. DSL is a technology for broadband data access over ordinary copper telephone lines. Generally, the data transmission distance ranges from 300 meters to 6 kilometers. The transmission rate ranges from 1.5 Mbps to 52 Mbps. By adopting different technologies and performance specifications, DSL falls into various types, such as ADSL/ADSL2+, VDSL/VDSL2 and SHDSL, etc.

Working Principle ADSL

Working Principle VDSL2 is the newest and most advanced standard of DSL broadband wireline communications. It provides high-bandwidth access, applying to the transmission with symmetric rate and asymmetric rate. It s more flexible transmission mode and is applicable to more situations. VDSL2 s downstream bandwidth of 85 Mbps and upstream bandwidth of 50 Mbps. VDSL2 standard defines various profiles for different situations. VDSL2 s DPBO/UPBO and PSD. VDSL2 is compatible with ADSL/ADSL2+ service.

Service Flow Network data is accessed by ZXDSL 9806H via electrical/optical interface. VTU-C (ZXDSL 9806H) converts digital signal to analog signal and sends it to VTU-R (modem). IPTV Service Feature Description IPTV is typically supplied by a service provider using Internet Protocol over a network infrastructure, which includes delivery by a broadband connection. IPTV offers significant advantages, including the ability to integrate television with other IP-based services like high-speed Internet access, live TV, and VoD. Subscribers can use IPTV through TV or through an ’IP STB + TV’. IPTV service ed by ZXDSL 9806H is based on multicast protocol.

DH Option82 Introduction

DH Option82 feature changes the frame structure of DH. It avoids the subscriber from being used by anyone else. Option82 is related to subscriber location information, including office-end and -end identification.

Principle

DH is based on UDP and contains server and client. DH server manages all documents on IP network. In addition, DH server processes requests at client end. The client uses IP information from the server. When ZXDSL 9806H receives a DH request from a , it adds option82 to the packet and forwards the packet to BAS. When ZXDSL 9806H receives a reply from BAS, it removes option82 from the packet and forwards the packet to the subscriber. Figure 24 shows DH Option82 flow.

PPPoE+ Introduction

To prevent from being used by others, PPPoE+ provides DSL subscriber authentication for RADIUS/AAA server. PPPoE+ adds a new tag to PPPoE packet for DSL subscriber authentication. PPPoE frame is added with security information. Subscriber and tag information are bound dynamically on AAA server. In this way, one can be used on one port only. By using PPPoE protocol, multiple hosts sharing an Ethernet link can have multiple PPP sessions with the access server through one or many bridge devices. Each host uses its own protocol stack and provides a interface to the .

Principle

PPPoE has two stages: Discovery stage and PPP session stage. When a host wants to start a PPPoE session, it must go into the discovery stage to identify the opposite Ethernet MAC address and establish a PPPoE SESSION_ID, At the discovery stage, the host may find multiple access servers. It can choose one of them. Both the host and selected access server establish PPP connection on Ethernet. The discovery stage is in uncertain state until PPP session is established. Once PPP session is established, both the host and access server must assign resources for PPP virtual interface. PPPoE intermediate agent intercepts all PPPoE discovery packets, including PADI, PADO, PADR, PADS and PADT packets. PPPoE intermediate agent adds a tag to the uplink data packets after it receives PADI and PADR packets. The tag contains DSL circuit identifiers of PADI and PADR packets. If PPPoE intermediate agent receives PADO and PADS packets with DSL circuit tag, it discards the tag and sends the packets to PPPoE client. Figure 25 shows PPPoE+ flow.

VBAS Introduction

VBAS adds a query and return port information packet to PPP session stage.

Principle

When the subscriber sends identification authentication request to BAS, BAS sends VBAS request packet to ZXDSL 9806H to query the host MAC address and ZXDSL 9806H physical port relationship. ZXDSL 9806H sends VBAS response packet to BAS after it receives VBAS request packet. The response packet contains the host MAC address and ZXDSL 9806H physical port relationship. BAS performs a local or remote authentication on this subscriber information. If the subscriber port information (such as subscriber MAC address) is used for authentication, it is required to enable VBAS protocol on ZXDSL 9806H, set relevant port and VLAN.

SVLAN Introduction

SVLAN encapsulates 802.1q protocol tag twice in an Ethernet frame. By doing so, the VLAN number is expanded to 4096 * 4096. In addition, multiple VLANs can be duplicated to one core VLAN.

Principle

ZXDSL 9806H expands the inner 802.1q tag (CVLAN tag) to be subscriber line identifier. The outer 802.1q tag (SVLAN tag) is used for layer-2 forwarding on the network. BRAS device peels off the outer tag and identifies the subscriber according to the inner tag. Port location implemented through SVLAN does not need any protocol interaction. However, it is required to plan double-layer VLAN and the layer-2 network must two-layer VLAN tagging.

Subscriber Secuirty Management MAC Address Binding Introduction

MAC address binding is implemented to bind a MAC address to a subscriber port. Only subscribers with specified MAC addresses can have an access to the network. Illegal s are rejected.

Principle

For subscriber ports binding with MAC addresses, the forwarding module of ZXDSL 9806H does not MAC address learning. If the source MAC address of the subscriber packet is not consistent with any static MAC address configured on the port, the packet is regarded as illegal and discarded. The process ensures that the subscriber port only accepts packets from specified source MAC address. Only specific subscribers are allowed to have an access to the network.

MAC Address Limit Introduction

MAC address learning limit is implemented to limit the learning MAC address number of each port. MAC address learning limit effectively avoids denial of service attacks from malicious s.

Principle

If the MAC address number does not exceed the limit, the forwarding module of ZXDSL 9806H automatically learns the subscriber’s MAC address and forwards the subscriber message. If the MAC address number exceeds the limit, the forwarding module ignores the new MAC address till an old MAC address ages and is released. The data packet is discarded. Once ZXDSL 9806H enables MAC address learning limit function, the quantity of static and dynamic MAC addresses is counted together.

IP Address Binding Introduction

IP address binding is implemented to bind an IP address to a port. Only s with specified IP addresses can have an access to the network. Illegal s are rejected, preventing IP address from being forged and stolen. IP address binding is suitable for networks that use static IP addressing and allocation.

Principle

For subscriber ports binding with IP addresses, the forwarding module of ZXDSL 9806H matches the source IP address of the packet with the IP address in binding table. If a match occurs, the packet is regarded as legal and is forwarded and vice versa.

Chapter 5 Network Security

The process ensures that the subscriber port only accepts packets from specified source IP address. Only specific subscribers are allowed to have an access to the network. It prevents IP address from being forged and stolen.

DH Snooping Introduction

ZXDSL 9806H s DH snooping function. In IPoE access scenario, DH snooping avoids illegal use of IP address, stolen service, and forced access to the network without getting configuration information from DH.

Principle

DH snooping is a DH security feature. It provides security by filtering non-trusted DH messages and by building and maintaining a DH snooping table. A non-trusted message is a message that is received from outside the network (or firewall) and can cause traffic attacks within the network. The DH snooping binding table contains MAC address(es), IP address(es), lease time, binding type, VLAN number and interface information. To maintain the DH snooping binding table, it is required to intercept DH Request, DH ACK, DH NAK, DH Decline and DH Release messages. The DH snooping binding table of ZXDSL 9806H is saved in flash. The system reads the backup information from flash after startup, avoiding unusual service in case IP addresses are not released when the system is restarted.

DH Source Guard Introduction

The implementation of DH source guard relies on DH snooping binding table. IP addresses are bound to a particular port. In this way, source IP addresses of non-DH packets through this port are filtered.

Principle

ZXDSL 9806H snoops into protocol packets between subscribers and DH server/relay. Before the subscriber obtains configuration messages, it discards all uplink packets except DH protocol packets. Once DH Ack packets is obtained, IP address and MAC address are bound to the subscriber port. Uplink data packets can be transmitted. In addition, uplink data packets, IP address and MAC address must be consistent. Otherwise, the data packets are discarded. When DH lease expires, the binding is cancelled. Non-DH uplink protocol packets are not transmitted any more. DH source guard effectively avoids IP address spoofing and malicious attacks, enhancing system and subscriber security.

NM Access Control Introduction

The principle of ACL is to classify input packets based on a series of matching conditions and determine how to process the packets (to forward or discard them). Therefore, the access of external devices to the local device is limited. Network management channel ACL is an access policy specially used for network management channel.

ZXDSL 9806H can configure a white list of IP addresses. Only the host on the white list can manage ZXDSL 9806H. ZXDSL 9806H can control the protocol type of IP packets and configure policy. It can forward or discard ICMP, T and UDP IP packets.

SSH Management Introduction

SSH protocol provides secure remote and other secure network services on the network. SSH can encrypt all data transmitted on the network, avoiding network attacks, DNS spoofing and IP spoofing. In addition, the encrypted data can be transmitted more quickly. SSH can be used instead of Telnet. It also provides a secure channel for FTP and PPP.

Principle

SSH uses public-key cryptography. SSH is used for interconnection and message exchange between hosts in the network. Each host which uses SSH must have its own host key pair. Host key pair includes a public and a private key. The server allows the client’s connection request after it authenticates the client’s key. One host can have multiple keys for different cryptographies. However, it must have the key created on DSS algorithm.

DH Introduction DH automates the assignment of IP addresses, subnet masks, default gateway and other IP parameters. It contains two parts: Server and Client. DH server manages all IP network data and processes DH requests of the client. DH client uses IP data assigned from DH server. DH provides two modes for allocating IP addresses: �

Automatic: It is also known as DH Reservation, in which the IP address is permanently assigned to a client once the client is provided a lease on an IP address.

�

Dynamic: The client is provided a lease on an IP address for a period of time. At any time before the lease expires, the DH client can request renewal of the lease on the current IP address. Once the lease expires, the client returns the IP address to the DH server. If the client still needs an IP address, it renegotiates with the server for a new IP address.

Principle DH Packet

To allow DH, network s need to allow several types of packets through the server-side firewall. All DH packets travel as UDP datagrams. All client-sent packets have source port 68 and

DH discovery: The client broadcasts on the physical subnet to find available servers. DH offer: When a DH server receives an IP lease request from a client, it extends an IP lease offer. This is done by reserving an IP address for the client and sending a DHOFFER message across the network to the client. DH selection: When multiple DH servers send DHOFFER packets to this client, it selects one among them, usually the first one. It must tell all the other DH servers that it has accepted an offer. To do this, the client broadcasts a DHREQUEST message containing the IP address of the server that made the offer. When the other DH servers receive this message, they withdraw any offers that they might have made to the client. If the DHOFFER packet contains invalid parameters, the client sends a DHDECLINE packet to the server, rejecting to accept the offer.

DH acknowledgement: When the DH server receives the DHREQUEST message from the client, which is basically a unicast packet, the server sends a DHACK packet to the client. This packet includes the lease duration and any other configuration information that the client might have requested.

2. IP address update Dynamical IP address has a lease. Once the lease is expired, the client looses the IP. If the client wants to use this IP, it needs to update IP lease. The client sends a DHREQUEST packet to the server for updating the IP. If this IP is valid, the server sends a DHACK packet to the client for acknowledgement. 3. IP release The client sends a request to the DH server to release the IP if the client does not want to use this IP any more. The client sends a DHRELEASE packet to the server and sets its IP to be 0.0.0.0.

DH Source Guard is a security function based on DH Snooping. With DH source guard function, only IP addresses allocated in DH mode can work normally. �

If the DH Snooping database does not have a record of a port allocated with an IP, the subscriber port only receives DH packets.

When a subscriber port is allocated with an IP, it only transfers IP packets that use the IP address as source IP. It discards other packets.

SNMP Definition SNMP is network management protocol defined by the IETF. Currently, SNMPv2, published in 1993, is commonly used. SNMP exposes management data in the form of variables on the managed systems, which describe the system configuration. These variables can then be queried (and sometimes set) by managing applications.

Network Management Stations

Sometimes called consoles, these devices execute management applications that monitor and control network elements. Physically, NMSs are usually engineering workstation-caliber computers with fast Us, megapixel color displays, substantial memory, and abundant disk space. At least one NMS must be present in each managed environment.

Managed Devices

A managed device is a network node that contains an SNMP agent and that resides on a managed network. Managed devices collect and store management information and make this information available to NMSs using SNMP. Managed devices, sometimes called network elements, can be routers and access servers, switches and bridges, hubs, computer hosts, or printers.

Management Information Bases

Management information is described with managed objects. A managed object (sometimes called a MIB object, an object, or a MIB) is one of any number of specific characteristics of a managed device. Managed objects are comprised of one or more object instances, which are essentially variables. A MIB is a collection of managed objects residing in a virtual information store. Collections of related managed objects are defined in specific MIB modules. The SMI defines the rules for describing management information. The SMI is defined using ASN.1. SNMPv2 defines 172 managed objects in MIB II.

Management Protocol

SNMP is a simple request/response protocol. It specifies seven core messages. One is for response. The others are for request. �

GET REQUEST - used to retrieve a piece of management information.

NetNumen N31 Structure

NMS server The NMS server is responsible for data communication with the management object, database server and the client. NMS components communicate with each other using T/IP protocol suite. RMI, SNMP, CORBA, HTTP and other protocols used on higher layers also run on T/IP.

Database server The database server stores NMS data of various NEs. The NMS server needs to access the database to write/read data into/from the database. The read and write request of the Client to the database is forwarded and executed through the NMS Server.

�

Client The Client is an NMS terminal. The can remotely to the NMS and access the NMS center via the Internet or the Intranet as a Client to perform authorized NMS operations.

In-band Networking

In-band networking mode provides two channels: Service channel and network management channel. Service channel is used to transmit service data. The network management channel is used to transmit network management information. In in-band networking mode, network management information is transmitted through service channel. NEs access the IP network through uplink interfaces. NEs in the same district use a cascade interface. In this way, multiple NEs only need one NE to provide an uplink interface for network management. The network management system communicates with each NE via this network management interface. In in-band network management mode, all NE network management information is sent to Ethernet switch in the NM center. The network management data flows are: NE > IP network > Ethernet switch > NM server. In-band networking mode does not need a dedicated network for network management. The networking is more flexible and convenient.

Out-of-band Networking

In out-of-band network management mode, NEs access the IP network through Ethernet interface. The network management center also access the IP network in this way. NEs can communicate with the NM system directly. In out-of-band networking mode, network management channel is completely independent of the service channel. The network management information is not affected if the service channel is faulty. One faulty NE has no any influence on other NEs. In out-of-band network management mode, the network management data flows are: NE > IP network > NM server.

SNTP Definition NTP is a protocol designed to synchronize the clocks of computers over a network. It is widely used to synchronize computer clocks in the global Internet. It provides comprehensive mechanisms to access national time and frequency dissemination services, organize the time-synchronization subnet and adjust the local clock in each participating subnet peer. SNTP is basically also NTP, but lacks some internal algorithms that are not needed for all types of servers.

Principle SNTP is rather a clarification of certain design features of NTP which allows operation in a simple, stateless remote-procedure call mode with accuracy and reliability expectations similar to the UDP/TIME protocol. SNTP is more applicable to s who use personal computers. SNTP can operate in either unicast (point-to-point) or multicast (point-to-multipoint) modes.

STP Definition STP is applied to avoid loop network. It achieves the path redundancy and loop free through certain algorithm. Thus it avoids the message transmission in the loop network. RSTP is an expansion of STP, which s rapid port switch and faster convergence.

Principle According to STP, bridges detect loop by exchanging BPDU messages and avoid loop by blocking corresponding port.

Root bridge: the switch with the smallest bridge ID. It determines whether a port is blocked or in forwarding state.

BPDU: all switches choose the root switch by exchanging BPDU.

Bridge ID: consists of bridge priority and MAC address.

Non-root bridge: non-root bridges update STP topology by exchanging BPDUs.

Root port: the port connected to root bridge directly or the port having the shortest path to the root.

Designated port: forwarding port.

�

Port cost: determined by the bandwidth.

�

Non-designated port: blocking port, which does not forward frame but only listens.

�

Bridge Priority: 0 ~ 65535. ’0’ stands for the highest priority.

Bridge Hello Time: 1 sec ~ 10 sec. Time interval that the root bridge takes for sending BPDUs to all other switches.

Bridge Max. Age: 6 sec ~40 sec. When the bridge maximum age expires, the root bridge is recalculated.

Bridge Forward Delay: 4 sec ~ 30 sec. The time for a port to switch from blocking state to forwarding state.

�

Port Priority: 0 ~ 255. ’0’ stands for the highest priority.

There are five states for a bridge/switch port: �

Blocking: only listen to BPDUs but do not forward frames.

Listening: listen to BPDUs to make sure that there is no loop before sending frames.

VLAN Definition VLAN technology implements virtual work group by dividing the devices in a local network logically, not physically. The protocol most commonly used today in configuring virtual LANs is IEEE 802.1Q.

Principle According to IEEE 802.1Q standard, VLAN header adds a 4-byte tag header to the original Ethernet frame. �

TPID: The 2-byte TPID has a fixed value of 0x8100 that indicates that the frame carries the 802.1Q/802.1p tag information.

TCI: The 2-byte TCI contains the following elements: �

Application ZXDSL 9806H adopts VLAN technology to isolate ports. The number of VLANs to be created depends on service demand. For instance, create one VLAN for each subscriber to isolate all subscribers. Or, create one VLAN for reach subscriber card. By default, subscribers on the same subscriber card are isolated from one another. The uplink port is in the VLAN for all subscribers. Services of all subscribers are accessed to the network through the uplink port.

Multicast Definition Multicast is a network addressing method to deliver information to a group of destinations simultaneously. It delivers the messages over each link of the network only once, creating copies only when the links to the multiple destinations split (typically network switches and routers). Multicast is often used for streaming media and Internet television applications. Compared to unicast, multicast has the following advantages: �

Less requirements on network devices

Server does not need to process quests for each .

Principle The core of multicast technology is to copy the packet at the place near to the receiver as close as possible. The source host just sends data packet to a specific multicast group. All receivers in the multicast group can receive the same data copy. Other hosts in the network cannot receive the data except the host (destination host) in the multicast group. Hosts in a multicast group can be in the same physical network or in different physical networks. The multicast group is identified with Type D IP address (224.0.0.0 ~ 239.255.255.255).

In IGMP Snooping mode, the system does not manage status of multicast . It just implements IGMP packet snooping and forwarding ively. It has a little influence on the system load. However, it greatly increases the load of processing protocols.

IGMP Router mode is a simplified proxy mode. In case the multicast service is sent to the uplink port, the system does not require uplink port for multicast service dynamically.

Routing Definition Route

Route in networking refers to a logic path within network in which a packet is traveling through from a sender to a receiver. Generally, a packet may through one or more nodes in a route.

Router

Routers are physical devices or a software system within a switch operating at layer-3 of the OSI model. A router forwards and routes data packets along networks. A router connects at least two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs or a LAN and its ISP network. A router is located at any gateway where one network meets another, including each point-of-presence on the Internet.

Routing Table

In computer networking a routing table is an electronic table (file) or database type object that is stored in a router or a networked computer. The routing table stores the routes (and in some cases, metrics associated with those routes) to particular network destinations. This information contains the topology of the network immediately around it. The construction of routing tables is the primary goal of routing protocols and static routes.

Routing Protocol

A routing protocol specifies how routers communicate with each other to disseminate information that allows them to select routes between any two nodes on a network. Commonly used routing protocols are RIP, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF, EGP, BGP and IS-IS.

Principle Router

A router is a computer whose software and hardware are usually tailored to the tasks of routing and forwarding information. A router selects an optimal path for the received packet according to the destination and sends the packet to the next router until to the last router which sends the packet to the destination host.

Routing Table

A routing table utilizes the same idea as using a map in package delivery. Whenever a node needs to send data to another node on a network, it needs to know where to send it. Whenever a device cannot directly connect to the destination node, it needs to find another way to send the package. Whenever a node does not know how to send the package it sends an IP packet to a gateway in the LAN. Since this is a complicated task to route the package to the correct destination, a gateway needs to keep track of the way to deliver this. A routing table is the way in which this data is stored, like a map. It is a database which keeps track of paths like a map and provides this information to the node requesting the data. The routing table consists of at least three information fields: �

QoS Definition QoS refers to the ability of a network to provide higher priority services for certain applications, by allocating dedicated bandwidth, controlling jitter and latency, and improving loss characteristics. Principle There are many technologies available to achieve the necessary QoS for a given and applications. Packet Classification

Packet classification classifies packets into different priorities or types of service. With packet classification, QoS features can be applied to different class.

Congestion Management

To avoid port congestion, priority queueing technology is used. Priority queueing enables the network to configure four traffic priorities – high, normal, medium and low.
