1 1941

School inspection

Pandit Gopinath was the principal of Government Junior High School in Konchgram. The annual inspection of his school was shortly due. It was very difficult for him to wear tros. Gopinath laughed and asked Mishra, "Does the inspection have to be of the school or mine? "

2 Bal Kishan

When Gopinath reached home, he came to know that his elder son Balkishan had slapped an Englishman.

Because in this incident an Indian had slapped an Englishman. The matter was considered sensitive. The police caught Balkishan and took him to the police station. Gopinath did not understand what to do. But his wife did not let him think much. Crying, she immediately forced him to go to the police station.

The matter was that in the market, Balkishan saw a young Englishman beating a cycle rickshaw driver. Balkishan did not know the reason nor did he felt the need to know because the Englishman was mercilessly beating the rickshaw puller, who was not even defending himself. Balkishan went and separated the rickshaw man from him and after holding the English young man by his collar, he slapped on both his cheeks. The young man ran away shouting something in English. Bal Kishan came to his house. Balkishan realized the seriousness of this incident, so he told his mother that he might have to go to the police station. That's what happened; After a while, Inspector Virendra came along with two soldiers and took him to the police station. Virendra kept him in the police station till the evening as a precaution that if the young man got the report written and Balkishan ran away then there would be trouble. Virendra had consoled Gopinath and returned him home.

3 Balkishan’s job

Bal Kishan was the 10th . He was a healthy young man with an athletic body. Gopinath now worried about his future. The place of a primary teacher in his school was lying vacant. He thought of giving Bal Kishan that place.

He told his idea to Bal Kishan.

One day, a few days after the fight with the Englishman, Gopinath told Balkishan, "There is a vacancy for a primary teacher in my school. You can get this job if you want."

Bal Kishan said, " But Gandhiji says to leave the job."

Gopinath said, " That was said during the non-cooperation movement. Now there is no such need."

Balkishan said the younger one has done his twelfth. He is also good at reading and writing. Get him employed"

Gopinath had two sons. The younger one's name was

Gopinath said, " He will get some job. If you get the job, I will be free of any tension."

Balkishan finally said yes.

Giving Rs 2, Gopinath said, "Get a nice English dress made. Take the tie and

learn to tie it too."

4 Inspection day

Bal Kishan was sweating, sitting on the bench lying outside the principal's room of the government school.

D'Souza and Gopinath returned after taking a tour of the school. Bal Kishan stood looking at them.

D'Souza's attention turned towards him.

Gopinath had not yet spoken to him about Balkishan.

Going inside, D'Souza asked, " Who is the young man standing outside.

Gopinath said, " Sir, he is my son. I brought him to meet you. he has ed 10th class with good marks. If you are kind, then the boy's life should be made."

D'Souza said, " What can I do ?"

Gopinath said, " There is a vacancy for a primary teacher in this school. You take an interview with him and put him on a temporary job with immediate effect. You can do that. After that, he can become permanent in due course of time."

D'Souza said, "If necessary, as a principal, you can keep one or two persons on temporary jobs."

Gopinath said, " I had some hesitation in doing this for my son.”

D'Souza was sitting on the chair of the principal. Gopinath in front of him. Gopinath, after receiving D'Souza's gesture, himself went out and sent Balkishan inside.

D'Souza found Balkishan to be extra capable. He could also work as a PT teacher.

He sent Balkishan out, called Gopinath inside, and said, " Take my signature after typing Balkishan's appointment letter. I will leave after that. Gopinath ordered the office staff to prepare the letter."

Gopinath had arranged food from his home. He served food on plates. There was also an arrangement for dessert after dinner.

Satisfied with the food, D'Souza left the school.

5 Shyam also got a job

Shyam Kishan was good at his studies. He had learned to read, write and type in English. Those who knew English were given priority in government jobs in those days. A limited number of candidates were called for appointments.

One of Shyams friends was from Jhansi. His father worked in Railways there. He called Shyam and asked him to apply for the post of clerk in railways. His boss was an Englishman whose name was Newman. 6 Jamindar's daughter

Laxmi, daughter of Jalaun's landlord Sundar Bhan, had ed eight classes. Sundar Bhan was thinking of marrying her off. He had a son Uttam, whom he had sent to the city to study. Uttam was three years older than

Lakshmi. Lakshmi was beautiful and, as well as helping her mother's work, she also learned homework. A few days ago, she had gone to visit Rani Laxmi Bai's fort in Jhansi with her parents by horse cart. Along with them, her friend Kala was also there. They were standing near a canon named Kadak Bijali and observing it on a location in Fort then came a handsome young man and he asked Kala gleefully, " Kala, you're here ?” With whom have you come here ?"

This young man was Bal Kishan a cousin of Kala.

Kala introduced everyone, " Brother, this is Chandra Uncle, aunty, this is my best friend, their daughter Lakshmi."

" He is my brother Bal Kishan ."

Bal Kishan saluted everyone with folded hands. Laxmi looking at him with enchantment folded both her hands in the gesture of Namaste. Then they went on their way.

In those few minutes of the meeting, the image of Bal Kishan had an indelible impression on Lakshmi’s mind. He seemed a part of her existence. But she did not reveal her feelings to anyone.

Balkishan had a desire to marry a girl like her, but he and Lakshmi were bound by their limits.

A few months later, Bal Kishan and Lakshmi met again at the wedding of Kala's elder sister. They could know each other better now. No one knows the future.

Chandrabhan fixed the marriage of Lakshmi with Kundan, the son of a rich landlord of a nearby village.

Kundan's age was 30 years and Lakshmi's age was about 14 years. The practice of child marriage had not been done away with completely by society. According to Chandra Bhan, there was a delay in the marriage of Lakshmi. When Kundan came to see Lakshmi, seeing him, Lakshmi's heart sank. She told her mother that did not like Kundan and her mother conveyed her words to Chandra Bhan. But Chandrabhan said, " Lakshmi is still ignorant. You explain to her that this relationship is good. The people are rich. She will rule in the in-laws' house. But Lakshmi wanted to escape from this marriage at any cost. During adolescence sometimes imaginations seem very real. It came to her mind that Bal Kishan could save her. She ed the flower vendor woman who brought garlands of flowers for worship. She knew that her son often used to go to Konch for selling flowers. Lakshmi wrote a letter and asked her to deliver it to Bal Kishan. In the name of the address, he told her that he is a teacher in the school there

The letter reached Bal Kishan.

He had no idea that the matter would reach this point. He discussed the matter with his friend Rafiq.

He said, " While the landlord's daughter herself is saying, there seems to be true in her words. You have to do something. There will be no one to stand by

her. Who will dare to make the landlord his enemy? "

Bal Kishan said, " I think I should meet her."

Rafiq said, " Maybe this will be fine." And returned to his home.

Running away

Balkishan went to Jalaun and called Laxmi to Kala's house and talked. Laxmi was being buried in shame while talking. But there was a question of her life, so she was compelled to do all this.

Lakshmi said to Balkishan, “My father has fixed my marriage with a man, who is much older than me and I don’t like him. Please take me away from here and save me .”

Kala said to him, “Brother since Lakshmi has seen you at Jhansi, she has fallen in love with you.”

Balkishan could not refuse the request. It was decided that Balkishan would come on a horse on the fifth day from that day and wait behind Lakshmi's house in the evening.

Lakshmi had made up her mind to run away with Bal Kishan. There was still conflict in her mind and also the sorrow of leaving his parents and family. Thinking of this, the heart would come to the mouth that how much grief would be to the parents. Will she ever be able to come home again in the future?

There were only two options in front of her, to keep everyone happy by marrying a middle-aged man or running away and marrying a groom of her choice. Bal Kishan's family was also unaware of the coming storm. However, Bal Kishan was learning horse riding from a friend Rafiq. Rafiq used to drive a tonga. 8 Shock and anger

Surajbhan was going mad with anger. Carrying a loaded gun with his men, he searched in the surrounding villages and the forests. The girl had gone of her own free will, so the police report was not made.

Balkishan came straight to his house with Lakshmi. He got off the horse. Then helped Lakshmi to get down. Lakshmi was wearing a red-colored kurta and a white salwar. She was wearing a red scarf. She covered her head with the scarf before entering the house.

The door was closed. Balkishan knocked on the door. Sarla opened the door. Seeing the girl who came with Balkishan, she got into thinking. The girl touched her feet and stood there

Mother asked Balkishan, " Who is this girl ?"

He narrated the whole story and said, " Now we both are in your shelter. We will do as you command."

Mother held Lakshmi's hand and said, " I take this girl in my shelter. You have to fight your own battle." Saying this she took Lakshmi inside the house with her. "

Balkishan stood in a state of distrust for a while. Then he went to his room.

9 The English boss

The name of the English officer who had hired Shyam was Newman. He was an engineer.

He was so impressed with Shyam that he made him his secretary. Shyam was also happy with Newman. Shyam would be surprised that Newman sahib does not look like an Englishman. Tales of the rough and tough behavior of the British officers were common. Newman was a mild person. But He was in India for ten years, after living in Kanpur for five years, he came to Jhansi on transfer. He knew a little Hindi also.

10 Fearing for Newman

This was the period when people were fighting for the independence of India. The Indian National Congress launched the ' Quit India Movement ' in August 1942 at the Bombay session of the Congress Committee under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.

Anti-British wave scorched India. Many people resigned from government jobs. The atmosphere had become very bad for the British. At times a few lonely Englishmen could be seen being teased and driven away by the local boys in isolated areas. Shyam Kishan could neither hate Newman Saheb. nor oppose him. Newman was a gentleman and he never abused or tortured anyone. He was very courteous even while talking to his juniors and subordinates.

In his Quit India speech, Gandhi asked all Indians, including teachers, to quit their government jobs and participate in the movement. Shyam thought that the British from the political ruling class needed to leave India. Not people like Newman.

But when he saw a group of youths shouting “Britishers leave India” in front of Neumann's house he became worried. Newman and his wife decided to leave India perhaps because they were starting to feel insecure and might be missing his children and grandchildren living in London.

Shyam made sure that Newman and his family safely leave Jhansi.

He escorted them to the railway station and boarded them on a night train to Bombay. The next day he resigned from the job.

Staying in the village, he decided to do some business and serve the country as much as possible.

11 Solution

Gopinathji had retired. When Chandrabhan came to know that Laxmi had gone with a young man named Balkishan and that youth was the son of Gopinath of Konchgram, his worries were over. Gopinath was a distinguished dignitary of the village and the surrounding area. Gopinath himself had sent the news of Lakshmi's coming with Bal Kishan to Chandrabhan. Along with this, he had also proposed to get Balkishan and Lakshmi married. Which Chandrabhan gladly accepted. Balkishan also left the job on the call of Gandhiji. Nevertheless, Chandra Bhan got Laxmi duly married to Balkishan and sent her daughter away from his house in a palanquin. Bal Kishan started teaching tuitions to the children at home.

Shyam along with his father started a Hindi daily newspaper by opening a printing house.

When some marriage proposals came for Shyam, he politely declined. He had decided that he would marry only when the country became independent. Everyone respected his decision. Knowing his resolve one neighborhood girl has secretly decided that she would marry Shyam when the country became independent.

Everyone wanted and waited for the independence of the country. Their struggle against the foreign rule also continued.
