Selection Method Teams for this unit will be independently chosen by the teacher. There are a number of factors that will be considered when selecting the teams. Some of those factors are: skill level/fitness level, number of absences, and social factors (leaders/followers and students that do not get along with each other). When selecting these teams friendship does not come into play. It does not become a factor because the students should be able to come out of their shells and meet new people in the class. Also, when putting the teams together based on the student’s skill levels, the league will stay competitive. By selecting the teams the teacher will be able to spilt up the students who are often absent so that if those students do not show up, they will not all be on one team. Finally, each team’s coach is one of the leaders in the class. On each team, the teacher will try to have students that fulfill all the roles needed for that given team, as well as spilt the students who do not get along to avoid confrontation. The class will be spilt up into five teams of six students. By doing this, during the regular season, one team will be available to keep track of statistics, scores, and will be able to referee the game.

Coach Role – Each team was assigned a coach. The coach is the captain or leader on the team. The coach possesses leadership ability and can motivate their other classmates. The coach will lead drills in practice and will encourage the other students to play hard/fair in all competitions. Tasks/Duties:      

Duty Team Role- The duty team will not be playing at one time during the season and during the final tournament. Their responsibility when they aren’t playing is to manage the duties of the referee, stat keeper, and score/time keeper, and cameraman.

Duties:

 



Referee: the referee will officiate games. They will call fouls, out of bounds, travels, etc. Stat Keeper: The stat keeper will be responsible for keeping all of the stats that are associated in the game of team handball. These stats can include goals scored, assists, shot percentage for each player, punishments, and the final score. After the game has been completed, the stat keeper must finalize and hand stat sheet into the team’s statistician. Score/Time Keeper: The scorekeeper will be responsible for operating the scoreboard during game play. They also need to keep track of the time and the lengths of each half. They need to be sure that the players on the court are aware of the time remaining for that half.

Skill/Knowledge







Referee: the referee needs to have the knowledge of all the rules associated with the sport of team handball. They will need to know how to react to certain fouls. Some may be just simple fouls, some may require a yellow card, and some may need a red card, which constitutes an ejection. Stat Keeper: the stat keeper will need to be able to work quickly to record stats for each player on the court. They will have to have a basic knowledge of the game to be able to record shots, assists, goals, etc. They must be able to calculate the percentages for shots upon completion of the match. Score/Time Keeper: the scorekeeper will need to know how to use the scoreboard they are given to record when goals are scored. Also, they need to know the length of each half and be able to operate the clock. He or she should be aware of a stoppage in the clock when a foul is committed or a goal is scored.

Player Role: Every student in the class will perform the role of the player. With the presence of the duty team, this allows players to focus all on the game so they can help their team to the best of their ability.

Responsibilities:

    

Give a good effort when learning skills and tactics to improve the team play Respect all opponents and officials Give 100% effort in all games and practices Play fairly during every game Come to each class with all materials necessary to play

Publicist Role- The publicist is responsible for making the class and school aware of the results of games that were played. They must consult the team’s statistician and coach to find out stats for the games and how certain players performed.

Duties:

   

Create a newspaper article for each game Distribute the newspaper article to the class and school Post articles in various locations around the school Consult to team’s statisticians and coaches after game has been completed

Be able to create an article on a computer Use creative writing to make article stand out to readers Basic knowledge of stats being recorded for the game of team handball

Equipment Manager Role- The equipment manager will be responsible for all the equipment needed for their team to practice and play games. This student needs to have the court set up and ready before each game is scheduled to start.

Duties:

    

Make sure all teams are equipped with proper equipment prior to games Set up field with proper equipment prior to game play and skills challenge Make sure all players have proper jerseys Collect and return equipment to proper locations after practices and games Inform teacher if any equipment is lost or damaged

  

Need to have good organizational skills Know number of players on team to distribute equipment Keep a list of equipment necessary for play that day

Fitness Specialist Role: This student is responsible for making sure his or her team is properly warmed up for each practice and competition. They need to show leadership skills when leading teams through warm-ups and cool downs.

Duties:

   

Lead team through warm-ups and cool downs Create a fitness schedule for each team Show leaderships skills when leading teams through warm-ups and cool downs Make sure all students are warmed up prior to contests and practices

Statistician Role – This student will keep track of the stats for the team and players on their team. After the game they will collect the stats that the duty team took during the game. They will collect and keep the stats for the entire season. Tasks/Duties:      

Keep the stats for individual players Keep a record of all the stats throughout the season Record stats after the game (from the duty team) so that they do not misplace the information Turn in the stats and records to the publicist Calculate the averages for the team (goals per game, saves per game, interceptions per game, etc) Keep the stats for all games

Manager Roles: The manager keeps the team organized. They must have good organizational and communication skills. The manager must make sure all the students know where to go and when the team events are. The manger also makes sure all the students are doing their assigned jobs during every practice, especially when they are the duty team. Tasks/Duties:     

Rules of Team Handball 31

The Playing Court: No one except the goalie is allowed to stand in the goal area. The goal opening is 2 meters by 3 meters. Players may jump into the area if the ball is released before landing in the area. The Ball: Number of Players: There are six players on each team (5 court players and one goalie). Substitutes may enter the game at any time through own substitution area as long as the player they are replacing has left the court. Uniform of the Players: Jerseys are the same color among each team. The goalkeeper must wear a different color shirt from teammates and opponents. No jewelry is allowed. Referees: There will be one referee. They have complete authority: Their decisions are final. The referees are assisted by a scorer keeper. Duration of the Game: There will be 2- 15 minute halves, with a 2 minute halftime. This is running time except for injury or one team time-out per half. The game ends in a tie unless the game demands a winner (championship game). In the championship game there will 2- 5 minute overtime periods. If the score remains tied at the end of the overtime, there will be a shot-out to determine the winner. Each team will get three shots. Throw-Off: A throw-off is taken by the team that wins the coin toss and chooses to start the game with the ball. Each team must be in its own half of the court with the defense 3 yards away from the ball. Following a whistle, the ball is ed from center court to a teammate and play begins. Throw-off is repeated after every goal scored and after half-time. Scoring: A goal is scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line inside the goal. A goal may be scored from any throw (free-throw, throw-in, throw-off, goal-throw). Playing The Ball A player is allowed . . . -To run with the ball for 3 steps -To hold the ball for 3 seconds Unlimited dribble with 3 steps allowed before and after dribbling (no double-dribble). A player is NOT allowed . . .    

Defending the Opponent: A player is allowed to obstruct an opponent with or without the ball but you cannot touch the opposition. The attacking player is not allowed to charge into a defensive player. Throw-In: A throw-in is awarded when ball goes out of bounds on the sideline or when the ball is last touched by a defensive player (excluding the goalie) and goes out of bounds over the end line. The throw-in is taken from the spot where the ball crossed the sideline, or if it crossed the end line, from the nearest corner. The thrower must place one foot on the sideline to execute the throw. Skills Challenge Speed ing: Teams of 6 will stand apart from one another and the handball between them, seeing how many completed es they get in 2 minutes. If the ball is dropped it may be picked up but the team has to start over with their counting. For example, if the team has 25 es then drops the ball… They have to restart there counting. The faster the es the more catches they should have. At the end of the 2 minutes the most consecutive es they’ve made is their score.

Speed Dribbling: For speed dribbling, each player on each team will dribbling (weave) in and out of the cones as quickly as they can. There will be 25 cones randomly placed throughout the court and the students will have to get from number 1 to number 25 (in order) while maintaining a constant dribble. The students will get a score based on how quickly they travel through all of the cones. Points system: The players points will be combined with the other on their team to have a total team’s score at the end. Under 30 seconds – 5 points Between 30-40 seconds – 4 points Between 40-50 seconds – 3 points Between 50-60 seconds – 2 points Between 60 seconds and above – 1 points Finish Line

Shooting Accuracy: The team handball goal will be split up into 6 different sections. Each section will have a different amount of points assigned to it (based on the difficulty of the shot). Every player on each team gets 3 shots and their points are added together (to the team’s total points).

Goals of Fair Play Students must show respect to all opponents and officials. Students shouldn’t let their feelings get the best of them. If a conflict is to arise, students should handle the matter in a mature and respectful manner. Give 100% effort. Sports are more fun for everyone when everyone is giving a full effort. It will also help develop basic skills in the sport being played. The sport education model is at its best when every role is being performed at the top level possible. Be enthusiastic. It will be more fun for everyone around if students show a want to be involved in class. Participate fully with all your effort. Be helpful. If a student is struggling with a certain skill, don’t be disrespectful. Help them out. It’s your team too. You will benefit by improving your teammates skills as well.
