Stimulus Response Theory

Stimulus Response Theory is a concept in psychology that refers to the belief that  behavior manifests as a result of the interplay between stimulus and response. In  particular, the belief is that a subject is presented with a stimulus, and then  responds to that stimulus, producing "behavior" (the object of psychology's study,  as a field). In other words, behavior cannot exist without a stimulus of some sort, at  least from this perspective.

When one thinks of Stimulus Response Theory, one can't help but think of classical conditioning. Of course, classical conditioning presents the concept of stimulus and response very succinctly, as it demonstrates the way that a stimulus can evoke a  predictable and consistent response in a subject with very little effort. And when  one thinks of classical conditioning, one can't help but think of Ivan Pavlov and his  dogs. Pavlov was a Russian researcher working near the turn of the century. In his  famous experiments, he conditioned a group of dogs to salivate when they heard a  dinner bell ring. This was achieved as follows. To begin with, Pavlov had an  unconditioned stimulus, the dog's food. When presented with this unconditioned  stimulus, the dogs would salivate, naturally, as an unconditioned response. Pavlov  began to ring a bell whenever his dogs were fed, and over time found that the bell  alone, without the presence of food, could reduce the expected response of  salivation. Overtime, the salivation had become a conditioned response to the  conditioned stimuli of the ringing bell.

Operant Theory Operant conditioning, sometimes referred to as instrumental learning, is a method  of learning that occurs through rewards and punishments for behavior. It  encourages the subject to associate desirable or undesirable outcomes with certain  behaviors. Operant conditioning (sometimes referred to as instrumental conditioning) is a  method of learning that occurs through rewards and punishments for behavior.  Through operant conditioning, an association is made between a behavior and a  consequence for that behavior. For example, when a lab rat presses a blue button, 

he receives a food pellet as a reward, but when he presses the red button he  receives a mild electric shock.

The Cognitive Learning Theory explains why the brain is the most incredible  network of information processing and interpretation in the body as we learn  things. This theory can be divided into two specific theories: the Social Cognitive  Theory (SCT), and the Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT). Cognitive Learning Theory implies that the different processes concerning learning can be explained by analyzing the mental processes first. It posits that with  effective cognitive processes, learning is easier and new information can be stored  in the memory for a long time. On the other hand, ineffective cognitive processes  result to learning difficulties that can be seen anytime during the lifetime of an  individual. These 3 variables in Social Cognitive Theory are said to be interrelated with each  other, causing learning to occur. An individual’s personal experience can converge  with the behavioral determinants and the environmental factors.

Social Cognitive Theory Illustration (Pajares, 2002) In the person­environment interaction, human beliefs, ideas and cognitive  competencies are modified by external factors such as a ive parent, stressful environment or a hot climate. In the person­behavior interaction, the cognitive  processes of a person affect his behavior; likewise, performance of such behavior  can modify the way he thinks. Lastly, the environment­behavior interaction,  external factors can alter the way you display the behavior. Also, your behavior can affect and modify your environment. This model clearly implies that for effective  and positive learning to occur an individual should have positive personal  characteristics, exhibit appropriate behavior and stay in a ive environment. Constructionist learning is inspired by the constructivist theory that individual  learners construct mental models in order to understand the world around them.  Constructivism advocates student­centered, discovery learning where students use  information they already know to acquire more knowledge. In psychology, cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort experienced  by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at  the same time, performs an action that is contradictory to one or more beliefs, ideas or values, or is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing beliefs,  ideas, or values. Need theory, also known as Three Needs Theory,[1][2] proposed by psychologist  David McClelland, is a motivational model that attempts to explain how the needs  for achievement, power, and affiliation affect the actions of people from a  managerial context. This model was developed in the 1960s soon after Maslow's  hierarchy of needs in the 1940s. McClelland stated that we all have these three  types of motivation regardless of age, sex, race, or culture. The type of motivation  by which each individual is driven derives from their life experiences and the  opinions of their culture.[1] This need theory is often taught in classes concerning  management or organizational behaviour. Need for achievement[edit] Main article: Need for achievement They prefer working on tasks of moderate difficulty, prefer work in which the  results are based on their effort rather than on anything else, and prefer to receive   on their work. Achievement based individuals tend to avoid both high  risk and low risk situations. Low risk situations are seen as too easy to be valid and  the high risk situations are seen as based more upon the luck of the situation rather  than the achievements that individual made.[3] This personality type is motivated  by accomplishment in the workplace and an employment hierarchy with  promotional positions.[4] Need for affilliation[edit] Main article: Need for affiliation People who have a need for affiliation prefer to spend time creating and  maintaining social relationships, enjoy being a part of groups, and have a desire to  feel loved and accepted. People in this group tend to adhere to the norms of the  culture in that workplace and typically do not change the norms of the workplace  for fear of rejection. This person favors collaboration over competition and does  not like situations with high risk or high uncertainty.[1] People who have a need for affiliation work well in areas based on social interactions like customer service or  client interaction positions.[3] Need for power[edit] Main article: Need for power People in this category enjoy work and place a high value on discipline. The  downside to this motivational type is that group goals can become zero­sum in  nature, that is, for one person to win, another must lose. However, this can be  positively applied to help accomplish group goals and to help others in the group  feel competent about their work. A person motivated by this need enjoys status  recognition, winning arguments, competition, and influencing others.[1] With this 

motivational type comes a need for personal prestige, and a constant need for a  better personal status.[4] Experiential Learning (Carl Rogers) Rogers distinguished two types of learning: cognitive (meaningless) and  experiential (significant). The former corresponds to academic knowledge such as  learning vocabulary or multiplication tables and the latter refers to applied  knowledge such as learning about engines in order to repair a car. The key to the  distinction is that experiential learning addresses the needs and wants of the  learner. Rogers lists these qualities of experiential learning: personal involvement,  self­initiated, evaluated by learner, and pervasive effects on learner. To Rogers, experiential learning is equivalent to personal change and growth.  Rogers feels that all human beings have a natural propensity to learn; the role of the teacher is to facilitate such learning. This includes: (1) setting a positive climate for learning, (2) clarifying the purposes of the learner(s), (3) organizing and making  available learning resources, (4) balancing intellectual and emotional components  of learning, and (5) sharing feelings and thoughts with learners but not dominating. According to Rogers, learning is facilitated when: (1) the student participates  completely in the learning process and has control over its nature and direction, (2)  it is primarily based upon direct confrontation with practical, social, personal or  research problems, and (3) self­evaluation is the principal method of assessing  progress or success. Rogers< also emphasizes the importance of learning to learn  and an openness to change.
