Anastasia Steele- ‘Ana' for short- is an intelligent young woman in her senior year at WCU Vancouver. She is a shy and insecure person who is typically transparent to a fault. She studies English Lit, and she lives with her roommate, Katherine Kavanagh. Katherine- or Kate, as her friends refer to her- is studying for a Journalism degree. Anastasia and Kate are very close, having been roommates since they were both freshmen at WSU.

Ana fills in for Kate to interview Christian Grey for their school newspaper. After the interview, Ana gives the recorder to Kate, so that she can transcribe it and compose her article. Kate is very protective of Ana; she wants to protect her “innocent” friend. Christian wants to be with Ana, but knows that it is not fair to bring her into his world; he would corrupt her. He pushes her away, but can’t seem to stay away himself. They inevitably end up together again. Christian buys her an expensive set of 1st edition books, trying to make up for his misleading actions after their coffee date. Ana dislikes being lavished with expensive gifts.

When out celebrating the completion of her final exams, Ana drunkenly calls Christian and proceeds to demand he tell her why he sent the books. Comprehending Ana drunken state, Christian comes and picks her up from the bar with impeccable timing. Afterward, Christian takes Ana on a short series of “dates”. Before one such event, Kate and Ana discuss the newly founded relationship. Kate observes that it is odd for Christian to have only kissed Ana once. Ana insists that he is just a very reserved person. That evening, he stunned her with an exhilarating helicopter ride.

Later, at his home in Seattle, he approaches her with a “non-disclosure agreement”, stating that she may not reveal anything about their relationship to anyone.

After g the NDA, Christian introduces her to his “playroom”. Ana is mortified by what she sees there, dubbing it his “Red Room of Pain”. After learning Christian’s secret, Ana has some research to do and decisions to make. Christian is very observant of Ana’s reaction and gently reassures her. He proposes that Anastasia sign a contract. She does some internet research on the and phrases she encounters in the contract and is horrified by what she finds.

After her research, she is disinclined to accept his offer but is gradually brought back around to consenting to the idea after being exposed to Christian's more sensitive side. There are many trials and stipulations written into the contract, including the clear indication that Ana may void the contract and leave the relationship at any time. Anastasia's main concern is that her affections for Christian aren't equally reciprocated. She wants "hearts and flowers", and Christian has affirmed that he is not romantically inclined. He and Ana share quite a few intense and steamy affairs, in which Christian begins to slowly introduce Ana to his lifestyle, of which he wants her to be a part. Ana is constantly going back and forth between being repulsed by Christian and his sexual whims and attracted to them. At times she holds the belief that Christian Grey is a domineering, sociopathic and egotistical control freak, not to mention borderline abusive; at other times, Ana is so enraptured by Christian that she would do and give anything if only to attain his satisfaction and approval. While these thoughts occupy her mind, the sexual escapades continue.

Ana is reluctant to sign the contract, and Christian decides that it is no longer necessary, as long as she follows the Rules he has laid out for her. Ana is pleased with his willingness to compromise but is still disturbed that Christian wants to make her feel pain. She asks him to show her exactly what he desires, thinking she would be able to handle it based on their previous exploits. However,

Christian's beating cuts her far deeper than she expects. She is repulsed by him and tells him that she will not be with him. Neither of them wants the relationship to end, yet neither is willing to give in to the other.

Background Information about 50 Shades of Grey

50 Shades of Grey was published June 20th, 2011. It was originally entitled Master of the Universe and was part of a fan-fiction series based off of Stephanie Meyer's Twilight books. After being chastised for the explicit content, E. L. James removed her work from the website and turned to self-publishing via Kindle. The first official copy was released as an e-book from a virtual publisher, based in Australia, in May of 2011.

Background Information about E.L. James:

The author of 50 Shades of Grey was born March 7th, 1963 in England. Her name is Erika Mitchell, though she now writes under the pseudonym of E. L. James. After graduating from the University of Kent, she went on to become a studio manager's assistant at the National Film and Television School. In 1987, she married screenwriter, Niall Leonard. They have two sons and reside in London, England. Her first attempts at publication resulted in a few Kindle books written under the pen name "Snowqueen's Icedragon".

Setting

50 Shades Of Grey takes places in Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and Savannah, Georgia- chronologically. The story begins in the month of May and covers the dates leading up to and past Ana's graduation from WSU. Most of the novel takes place in either Christian's lavish dwellings or Ana's humble apartment. There are also various other places visited briefly, such as a bar, the WSU campus, and numerous restaurants. Most of the time the characters spend outdoors, they are dressed warmly in response to the chilly weather.

Story Plot Analysis:

The plot of this story revolves around one man's desperate need for control in all things and a young woman who tests both of their limits. The book follows the intricacies of their relationship and highlights a subject most would find tabooBDSM. This erotic love story is a revolving door of hopes, let-downs, and shocking surprises.

CHAPTER 1

One day Kate, who is the editor of their school newspaper, is supposed to interview with Christian Grey- an enigmatic, yet dashing and thoroughly handsome self-made billionaire. On the day of the interview, however, Kate is ill and begs Ana to go in her place. Even though she is reluctant at first, Ana agrees to go, mainly out of a sense of duty to her friend. During the entire drive to the interview, she derides herself for not staying home and studying for her final exams. Ana is definitely a practical person; yet being an English Lit. major, she is also, inevitably, a romantic. We are first introduced to Christian Grey when Ana arrives to give Kate's interview. In his employ are many stylish and attractive females, working as secretaries and assistants. The building itself is as elegant and poised as the people within. Ana begins to feel inadequate, being immersed in such an unfamiliar world. Her insecurities lead to an awkward interview from the moment she steps through Christian's office door, where she trips, falling flat on her face. She attempts to regain her composure and proceeds with the interview. Fumbling with a recorder, she reads the questions previously prepared by Kate. She makes one embarrassing blunder after another, even asking Christian if he was gay when reading the words on her paper before fully comprehending them herself. The meeting takes a turn when Christian begins asking some probing questions of his own. His prying demeanor leaves Ana wondering why he is so interested in the mundane details of her personal life and makes her even more curious about him. The interview with Christian Grey, which begins awkwardly, takes on an odd and sexually suggestive tangent. Christian even cancels a previously scheduled meeting in order to continue his verbal conflagration with Ana. He is compelling, domineering and extremely handsome. By the conclusion of the interview, Ana is left understandably flustered. She is unsure of what has just transpired and eager to get back home, to her comfortable, familiar surroundings.

CHAPTER 2

After listening to Ana’s recording of the interview, Kate is certain that Christian seems “quite taken” with Ana. Christian and Ana begin to fall for one another and a sort of courting begins, albeit in an unconventional form. He ‘happens' run into her at the hardware store, where she works, and his purchases leave more questions than answers. During their conversation, Ana mentions that Kate is having a difficult time with her article, due to a lack original photos of her subject. Christian obligingly offers an original, and a photo shoot is scheduled. Ana and Kate enlist the help of their friend José, for his photography skills. José is not very pleased when he notices Christian's obvious interest in Anastasia. Christian is also not very pleased with José's presence

CHAPTER 3

Ana, Kate, José and José's assistant, Travis, arrive for Christian Grey's photo shoot. When the session is concluded, Christian invites Ana to go out for coffee. Ana is bewildered, as are her friends- though they caution her to be careful. They feel, and rightly so, that Ana is too innocent to be mixed up with the likes of such a domineering man as Christian Grey. Anastasia and Christian go out for their coffee date, which consisted of English breakfast tea for Ana and a fancy coffee for Christian- complete with a leaf design in the foam. They learn about each other throughout their dialogue. Christian presses Ana about the status of her relationship with José and her co-worker from the hardware store, Paul. Ana wonders at his jealous demeanor, but assures him that both relationships are completely platonic- neither one can claim the title of her boyfriend. Christian seems satisfied with her response, and continues his inquisition, asking seemingly random questions about her childhood, details about her parents and they even touch on her desire to visit England, to see the land that inspired such amazing authors as Shakespeare, Austen, and the Brontë sisters. Ana finds herself answering all of his questions without hesitation; she tells him about her mother, Carla's four marriages and her closeness with her stepfather, Ray. She realizes that she is answering all of his questions and decides to ask a few of her own. She asks about his siblings, and he reveals that he has two adopted siblings- a younger sister and a brother, Elliot. He is abrupt and aloof when discussing his life, and she knows he is not comfortable with sharing personal details. Ana informs Christian that she must leave so that she can study for her final exams, which is partly true, though she is mostly just overwhelmed by him. During their parting conversation, Ana suddenly asks Christian if he has a girlfriend. His response, "I don't do girlfriends.", was less than thrilling. After a tense moment, in which Ana mentally begs Christian to kiss her, he tells her that he is no good for her and that she should stay away from him. Ana, having been smitten by his charismatic conversational skills and dashing good looks, is crushed at Christian's rejection. Christian feels bad for misleading Ana, and, though he knows she would be better off without him, he is still compelled to make her a part of his life.

CHAPTER 4

In way of apologizing for his announcement on their coffee date, Christian sends Anastasia three 1st edition copies of Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Ana arrives home to her and Kate's apartment after they complete their final exams. Kate notices a package their front door and tells Ana that it's for her. Ana takes the package and heads inside, thinking it is probably from her mother or stepfather, Ray. Ana is bewildered when she sees the books and realizes what a fortune they must have cost. She wonders how about the significant of the fact that the final exams she had just completed, were centered on Tess of the D’Urbervilles. She is flattered, shocked and determined to return the gift. Until then, she and Kate decide to put their cares aside for the night and go out to celebrate completing their final exams. Ana’s next interaction with Christian takes place after she drunkenly calls him whilst out celebrating with Kate and José. She is determined to know why he felt compelled to send her the 1st edition copies of Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Christian is not pleased with Ana's state of drunkenness, especially when she discloses that she is there with José. He insists that she stay where she is and vehemently states that he is coming to get her. After the phone call, Ana heads outside to get some fresh air. José, who is also completely inebriated, s her. Ana is caught completely off guard when he attempts to kiss her. She is horrified at this and tries dodging his advances, but to no end. Christian arrives on the scene and is infuriated at the situation. Almost immediately after he confronts the two of them, Ana gets sick and continues to do so. José waits around sulkily, but eventually heads back inside, full of regret. Christian holds Ana's hair while she gets sick. He insists on driving her home, but Ana is adamant that she must talk to Kate before leaving. Christian assures her that his brother, Elliot, is inside talking with Kate at the very moment. Still cautious, Ana refuses to leave without seeing Kate. In order to appease her, they head back inside, stopping at the bar, where Christian orders Ana an ice water. They spot Kate and Elliot on the dance floor. Christian heads over to say a few words to Elliot, and returns to Ana, declaring that all is well and it is time to go. This is not what Ana had been expecting to take place. She is confused and inebriated and finally es out in Christian Grey's arms.

CHAPTER 5

When Ana awakens, her head is throbbing and she is uncertain of where she is. She quickly recalls the events from the previous evening. Christian has been very accommodating, leaving her some Advil and orange juice. This is the beginning of their more intimate relationship. Ana makes sure that nothing sexual transpired between them, and Christian assures her that he was a gentleman. The aftermath of her drunken escapade reveals a lot about Christian's personality. He is infuriated that she allowed herself to be put in harm's way and scolds her profusely, hinting that the punishment would be much worse, were she already his. Throughout her luxurious stay with Christian, Ana goes back and forth between being intimidated by and frustrated with Christian's demeanor and being utterly and completely fascinated by him. Christian buys her a new outfit, as the one she was wearing the night before had been soiled with her vomit. Ana offers to pay him back for the clothes and also attests that she can not possibly keep the books he gifted to her. She asks Christian why he feels the need to do these things for her. Christian is visibly upset by her requests, simply stating that he does it because he can. He again reiterates that he is no good for her, and warns her that his tastes are very "singular", but that he can't seem to stay away from her. This excites Ana and she makes it known that she is willing to enter into a sensual relationship with him. He refuses to touch her, though, until she signs her consent in writing. Ana wonders at this but is too overcome with lust and iration for Christian to dwell on it for long. They enjoy their breakfast and make plans for that evening. Christian informs her that he has a helicopter that he will be piloting from Portland to Seattle. He insists that Ana clears her plate before leaving the table. As they get ready to depart, Christian demands that she dry her hair so that she doesn't become ill. Retreating to the bathroom to acquiesce his request, Ana stops and asks Christian where he'd spent the night the previous evening. He reveals that he slept in the bed with her and that only just sleeping with someone was a new experience for him. While taking the elevator to exit the building, Christian and Ana share a very heated and ionate kiss. This is her first taste of Christian's rougher side, and she seems to enjoy it.

CHAPTER 6

On the drive back to Ana's apartment, Christian is on the receiving end of a barrage of phone calls. Most notably, one from a woman named Andrea, informing him the his "NDA" has been emailed. He also receives a call from a business colleague and his brother, Elliot. All of these calls are conducted via the Audi SUV's internal speakerphone. Elliot seems delighted to hear that Ana is accompanying his brother, and greets her warmly when they arrive. Christian and Elliot take their leave and Kate and Ana discuss the intimate details of their respective nights; Kate revealing more than Ana. Christian's fervent kiss in the elevator has left her with an aching hunger to see him again. Christian feels the same, and both are eagerly looking forward to their planned evening together. Kate helps Ana get ready for her date with Christian. Ana goes to work and waits impatiently for her shift to end. While at work she contemplates her issues with José, Kate's distrust of Christian, and Christian himself. She wonders what he wants in writing, and can barely contain her "Inner Goddess"'s enthusiasm for the pending evening. Christian is waiting for Ana as soon as she is off of work at Clayton's. The short drive to the heliport is charged with sexual tension; again, when entering the elevator- and recalling the last time they were in one- the air was charged with their electric attraction. Ana and Christian board the helicopter, with Christian piloting. He straps Ana into her harness and seems to take extra delight in doing so. They depart Portland and head to Seattle. The flight is less than an hour and Ana arrives not-so-modest "apartment" exhilarated. She is awed by the beautiful home in which she finds herself and begins to feel out of place. After some conversation, Christian informs Ana that he would like for her to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement). This contract stipulates that the intricacies of their relationship are strictly confidential; Ana is not permitted to speak to anyone about their relationship at any time. Ana signs the NDA without hesitation, though reprimanded by Christian for g something without reading it first. She declares that she would never speak about him to anyone anyway, therefore the NDA is moot. Ana signs the document, and a delighted Christian shows her his “playroom”.

CHAPTER 7

After seeing Christian’s “playroom”, and finally learning his secret, Ana is left very confused by her conflicting emotions. She had been completely unprepared for what she encountered on the other side of that door. Comparable to a 16thcentury torture chamber, the implements which adorned the room were breathtaking…ly disturbing. It was made abundantly clear at that point, why Christian Grey was so private and mysterious. He practiced BDSM, extensively. Ana is desperate to please Christian, although thoroughly and completely distressed about her present predicament. Knowing how many numerous devices and contraptions Christian had readily available makes her feel incredibly nervous and inexperienced. She is at times mortified, curious and hesitant alternately. Christian explains that he is a Dominant and would like for her to consent to be his Submissive. He shows her all the perks and advantages she would have, were she to submit, including her own bedroom in his home. He tells her he wishes for her to sign a contract, and shows her a list of "Rules" and expectations he has for her. This contract is for her own comfort and peace of mind. It clearly states what would be expected from her, as his “Submissive”. Ana is reluctant, at first, to even consider such a taboo lifestyle. Christian encourages Ana to go home and do research on the items and actions mentioned in the contract. Ana says that she usually uses Kate’s laptop or the library’s computer, and is not sure how she would be able to research the subjects she encounters. Whilst discussing the various items and clauses in the contract, Ana reveals to Christian that she is a virgin. Christian is extremely upset that she has not previously disclosed this information.

CHAPTER 8

Christian is infuriated that he has exposed Ana to his extreme lifestyle, when he finds out just how innocent and inexperienced she really is. He decides that her first time must not be in his "playroom". He then decides that he must take it upon himself to ensure that her first time was as wonderful as possible for her. For this sexual encounter, they forego the ‘rules' of the contract. Ana falls asleep and wakes up in the night. She encounters Christian playing the piano expertly and, afterward, he cuddles with her while she falls back asleep.

CHAPTER 9

Ana awakens the next morning to worried texts from Kate. She is unsure of how she could explain what she's been doing. Ana lets Christian sleep and begins to make breakfast while listening to music on her iPod. Waking up, Christian s her and they have a mostly pleasant breakfast together, during which he compels her to eat, yet again. Christian attempts to persuade Ana to spend another night at his home, but she refuses, requesting to go home that evening. After breakfast, Ana receives a phone call from Kate, who is worried about her. Ana calms her friend and insists that she is fine. Kate's probing leads Ana to bring up the specifics of the NDA, as she is concerned she will not be able to talk to her friend and ask her any questions she might have regarding the mechanics of sex. Ana promises Christian, that she will not tell Kate about the "Red Room of Pain". Christian and Ana then share a sensual bath, during which Ana is formally introduced to giving oral pleasure. After the leave the bath, Christian begs Ana to accept the agreement. The depth of his desire leaves her speechless and she follows him to his bedroom for another bout of raucous intercourse. The are thoroughly enjoying themselves when they are interrupted by the arrival of Christian's mother.

CHAPTER 10

Christian's mother, Dr. Grace Trevelyan Grey, arrives abruptly, looking for her son and is pleasantly surprised to find his preoccupied with a pretty young woman. Christian introduces Ana to his mother and, while they converse, Ana slips out when her phone rings, expecting it to be Kate. It's José and Christian is not happy when he finds out. While leaving, Christian complains that Ana needs to hurry up and sign the agreement so she will stop defying him. They stop at a restaurant to eat, and Christian orders for both of them, much to Ana's growing annoyance. She does, however, it to herself that his choices are delicious. During the meal, Christian reveals how he was exposed to the BDSM lifestyle. He was seduced by a friend of his adoptive mother's and was trained as her Submissive at the age of 15. When he reveals that he is still good friend with the woman Ana dubs "Mrs. Robinson", she becomes increasingly jealous and agitated. It is during this conversation that Christian reveals that he feel entirely compatible with her, whereas he felt totally incompatible with the previous 15 women he's had in his ‘playroom'. Ana confirms that he is not seeing any of them anymore. They leave the restaurant and drive home in silent reverie. It is 5 in the evening when they arrive, and Kate is home, packing for their imminent move to Seattle after graduation. When he drops her off, they make plans for Wednesday, and Ana is sad to leave him. Before departing, Christian hands her the contract, and bids her to do the internet research he requested. As she enters the apartment, Kate is insistent on Ana disclosing the events that unfolded while she was with Christian. Ana tells her the bare minimum, still not sure exactly how she, herself, feels about her current predicament. Kate prattles on about losing her virginity, while Ana daydreams about Christian. When Kate starts talking about her experiences with Elliot, it is immediately clear that she is falling for him hard. She tells Ana that she is seeing him again on Saturday when he comes to help them move. Ana sets about making dinner and, after grabbing the envelopes off of the table, discovers that she has two interviews for intern placements. After discussing their various future plans, Ana receives a phone call from José. She takes the call, annoyed and reassures José that she is not upset with him, but that their relationship is completely platonic. He offends her

once more, by insinuating that she is only with Christian because he's rich. Ana snaps at him. Knowing his irritation comes from jealousy, she ends the call with a promise to meet up the next day. At the end of the night, Kate giddily takes a phone call from Elliot, leaving Ana to ruminate. When she returns to say goodnight, her disposition leads Ana to believe that her friend may be in love. While getting ready for bed, Ana thinks over her relationship with Christian Grey. She climbs into bed and begins to read over the contract he's given her.

CHAPTER 11

The contract was professionally drafted. It is a lengthy document stating her rights as his Submissive, his rights as a Dominant, and every type of sexual act known to mankind was listed- waiting for her to indicate which maneuvers and devices she would or would not be okay with having implemented throughout their relationship. Not only does the contract dictate that Christian has complete control over her body and can deliver praise or punishment as he sees fit, but it also stipulates that she follow a very strict diet and exercise regimen, keep herself in good health by visiting a doctor regularly, and to never put herself in harm's way. After reviewing the entire contract, Ana was full of many different emotions. She was extremely skeptical of most of the things mentioned and thoroughly outraged at some of the others. Ana falls asleep, thinking about the contract. The next morning, Kate awakens her and informs her that she has a delivery. Christian has purchased her a laptop so that she may more easily research the contract. Ana is exasperated at Christian for buying her yet another expensive gift. However, after the computer is set up and she sees she has an email from him, Ana almost immediately changes her attitude. Her excitement over Christian overwhelms her fears about the contract for the time being. Christian and Ana email back and forth a few times, before each begins their work days. That evening, Ana can't wait to get home so that she can email Christian. There is a message waiting for her and she responds. She and Christian have a short conversation, in which he encourages her again to review the contract and do the necessary research. Ana agrees, and, after they conclude their conversation, she looks up "Submissive" online.

CHAPTER 12

Ana is completely shocked by what she find online. She decides to send Christian an email, pointedly telling him she does not accept his desires. This leads Christian to make an impromptu visit, during which he seduces Ana in her bedroom, effectively showing her how he uses sex as a weapon. After Christian leaves, Kate and Ana discuss their respective relationships. Later, Ana and Christian have another email conversation. Ana lists many of the items in the contract that she is uncomfortable with.

CHAPTER 13

Ana speaks on the phone to her mother, who expresses concern over Ana’s state of mind. Ana then has yet another email conversation with Christian. During this conversation, they further discuss Ana’s willingness, or lack thereof, to perform the various tasks listed in the contract. Ana goes to goes and gets hit on by Paul Clayton, again, and she informs him that she has a date that evening with Christian Grey. Paul is dumbfounded. That evening, Christian and Ana dine at a fancy restaurant, in a secluded booth, where they further discuss the details of their impending Dominant/Submissive relationship. At the end of the evening, Christian attempts to persuade Ana to come home with him, but she declines. Before they say their final goodbyes, Christian hints at buying Ana a new, safer vehicle. While getting ready for bed, Ana checks her email and sees one from Christian, asking her, yet again, to give his proposal serious consideration.

CHAPTER 14

Ana has an extremely erotic dream about Christian. When she wakes up, she gives Kate a run-down of her date the previous night-omitting certain pertinent details, of course. Today is the day of her and Kate’s graduation ceremony. Ana’s stepfather, Ray arrives and accompanies them. At the ceremony, Christian and Kate both give speeches; Kate’s for her valedictorian achievement and Christian for his project to feed the world’s hungry. It is during this point that Ana is made aware of the tragedies in Christian’s distant past. Christian meets Ray, and Ray approves. When Ana arrives home, she and Christian exchange more emails. They decide to have a discussion in person, and Ana writes Christian a note about accepting his contract.

CHAPTER 15

Christian comes over and he and Ana have their first ‘real' Dominant/Submissive non-sexual exchange when Ana attempts to give him back the 1st edition books Christian had previously purchased for her. He refuses to take them back, and she decides to give them to a charity to auction off. They go over the contract again, with Ana asking many questions and Christian patiently and informatively answering them. They have sex and Ana is allowed to feel like she is in control.

CHAPTER 16

Ana tells Christian about the erotic dream she had of him, and Christian is amused. During a discussion about contraception, Ana unintentionally rolls her eyes at Christian. This provokes him, and he spanks Ana a total of eighteen times. They then proceed to have sex. This gives Ana a much clearer picture of the sort of thing she can come to expect when living as Christian’s Submissive. Ana is distraught and unsure what she should do. She has a phone call with her mother and attempts to sort out her feelings and desires. Ana and Christian communicate via email again. Ana conveys her sadness that he doesn’t stay with her, and this entices Christian to come back. When he arrives at Ana’s apartment, Kate is livid, because he is constantly making Ana cry. Kate tries to stop Christian from entering, but Ana lets her know that it’s okay. Christian and Ana discuss how being spanked truly made Ana feel. Christian decides to give in to Ana’s wishes and spends the night with her.

CHAPTER 17

Ana is ecstatic when she wakes up next to Christian. He leaves for work, as does Ana. She is going to work her last day at Clayton's Hardware. Before leaving for work, Ana and Christian email each other, discussing the spanking incident further- both trying to understand the others point of view. After leaving her apartment, Ana is surprised to find that Christian has, indeed, purchased her a new car. Taylor is waiting to take the keys to her old VW so that he can sell it for her. While at work, a delivery person delivers Ana a package. It is a Blackberry phone Christian has purchased for her, so that he may her whenever he pleases. Ana is perturbed, and keeps the phone in her pocket throughout her work day. When she arrives home, she and Kate continue packing for their move to Seattle. José comes over to help, and, later, Elliot arrives. José and Ana decide to go to the bar to give Elliot and Kate some privacy. When she returns from the bar, there is an email from Christian waiting. He onishes her for not ing him when she got home, as she had said that she would. Ana calls him and assures him that all is well. Kate and Ana move into their new apartment, with the help of Elliot. Sunday arrives, and Ana awakens to an email from Christian, giving her access codes to his garage for their appointment. They are due to meet with a renowned OB/GYN for contraception.

CHAPTER 18

Ana meets with the doctor and chooses her contraception. She plays a joke on Christian, telling him that she isn't allowed to have sex for four weeks, per the doctor's request. She is immediately unsure of his reaction, afraid that he might choose to punish her for fooling him. Christian, however, sees the humor in it and laughs it off. Christian takes Ana back to the "Red Room of Pain", where he proceeds to debase and defile her. He shows Ana what he wants her to do- how to sit, stand, conduct herself and how to properly please his every whim. Christian becomes aroused and decides it is time to teach Ana some new ‘tricks'. He ties her up and brings her to completion using a riding crop. He commands her like a slave and she is left wondering why she is aroused by this torturous treatment. She is exhausted by the end of the night, and Christian carries her to bed.

CHAPTER 19

Christian wakes Ana. She gets dressed and realizes that Christian still has her panties from their previous excursion. Rather than go through the embarrassing debacle of asking him for her underwear, Ana decides to call his bluff. This results in Ana leaving the house sans undies. Christian and Ana go to Christian's parent's house for dinner. Here, Ana meets Christian's mother, Grace, and brother Elliot, again. She is also introduced to his sister, Mia, and father, Carrick. Kate is there as Elliot's date. Mia is very excited to meet Ana and greets her warmly. During casual conversation, Ana mentions that she was thinking of going to visit her mother, and Christian is visibly upset at the news. He onishes her for not including him when making her plans. During the meal, Kate reveals that Ana went to the bar with José, which only serves to further increase Christian's ire. He quickly moves on and they entire family enjoys a wonderful, delicious meal together. After dinner, Christian announces that he is going to give Ana a ‘tour'. Instead, he takes her out to the boathouse, wherein he plans to spank her- as punishment for José, no doubt and then have his way her.

CHAPTER 20

Upon entering the boathouse, Ana begs Christian not to hit her. His anger and need are obvious. Christian acquiesces her demands to not be spanked, but still, has his way with her. When they are finished, he finally deigns to return her underwear. Ana is proud of herself for not giving in and asking for them. She has retained a minute amount of power, at least. They exit the boathouse and go to say goodbye to Kate and Elliot. Ana tells Kate to stop antagonizing Christian, though Kate believes she is doing it for Ana's own good. Christian states that he and Ana should be leaving as well, as Ana has interviews for internships the next day. As they are leaving, Christian's family makes it well known that they adore Ana and wish to see her again. On the ride home, Ana reveals to Christian that she feels she was only invited to the dinner with his parents because he felt trapped. Elliot bringing Kate had left him with no other alternative but to invite her. Christian tell Ana that she is entirely too insecure and that he was very much looking forward to her meeting his parents. They discuss Ana going to see her mother. Christian asks if he may come along, and Ana tells him that she was hoping to have some time away from all of his intensity. Ana reveals that she is having second thoughts, but is unable to it why she is having them. She does not want to let Christian know the depth of her feelings toward him, and she is afraid of being punished for her own needs and desires. Christian picks up on how she is feeling and agrees to "try". Ana is so elated, she jumps out of her seat-belt and into his lap, stating that she will try also. She will sign his contract. Christian tells her to wait, and think about it while she is visiting her mother in Georgia. They arrive at Christian's apartment and he leads her upstairs for a round of "Vanilla" sex. Christian stops when he realizes something is wrong. Ana declares that she wants him to "make love" to her and that she wants to touch him. This puts Christian in a foul mood and he refuses. After a bit, they are back to an amicable atmosphere. Ana tries to negotiate with Christian, in order to learn more about why is conditioned in such a way, but he shuts her down. He proposes that she goes along with his requests for the rest of the night, and, if she isn't too tired afterward, he will tell her why he doesn't like to be touched. Ana gladly accepts his , and they proceed with a night of carnal

bliss. After they finished, a sated Ana tiredly demands answers. Christian reveals that his biological mother was a "crack whore”.

CHAPTER 21

Ana wakes the next day, to an empty room. She goes in search of Christian and finds him on the phone in his study, discussing business. When his business is concluded, they, again, resort to fornication. After they finish, Ana is certain something is wrong but is unsure of what it might be. She leaves to go takes a shower, and then she and Christian have breakfast together. Ana asks him again, why he doesn't like being touched. Christian says that he has told her more than he has ever told anyone else. Not wanting to anger him, Ana drops the subject. Ana leaves to go to her interviews. Both seem to go well, and Ana arrives home to Kate unpacking. The two discuss her interviews, and, inevitably, Christian Grey. Kate is worried about Ana and can see a change in her. She lets Ana know that she can always come to her to talk about anything with no judgments. Their conversation leaves Ana with a lot to think about. She checks her Blackberry and is disappointed that there are no messages from Christian. She decides to send him a message, and they have a short exchange before Ana leaves for the airport to go visit her mother in Georgia. When she gets to the airport, Ana finds that Christian has upgraded her ticket, due to her refusal of his private jet. Ana boards the plane, mentally swearing at Christian Grey.

CHAPTER 22

After receiving a manicure, massage and complimentary champagne, Ana is in much better spirits for her flight. She emails Christian, highlighting the fact that his upgrade granted her a massage, and, when he emails back, he asks who gave her a massage. She tells him that it was a very "pleasant" young man, and leaves it at that. She closes the computer, as the plane takes off. The flight attendant comes by and tells her she must stow her laptop. Ana sneaks onto her Blackberry and emails back and forth with Christian a few times. She is unsure whether he is angry or amused, but suspects the worst. On her layover in Atlanta, Ana composes a long email to Christian, mainly to keep herself awake. The email states how she fears him at times, not knowing whether or not to takes his threats seriously, and that she needs to figure out what she wants. She sends the email and boards her connecting flight. Upon her arrival in Savannah, GA, Ana meets her mother, Carla, and her current stepfather, Bob Adams, in tears. She has dealt with so much recently, just being with her mother- and being completely exhausted- is overwhelming. On the way to Carla's and Bob's, Ana discloses to her mother the depth of her feelings towards Christian. She doesn't go into detail, being barred from doing so by the NDA she'd signed. When they arrive at the house, Ana unpacks and reads an email from Christian. He is upset that she finally communicates with him openly and honestly when she is far away from him. He explains his intentions regarding the things he's said he wants to do to her and reassures her that he wants her and that he understands how difficult of a transition this is for her. Reading this email leads Ana to the official realization that she is in love with Christian. Ana naps and then goes out to dinner with her mother and Bob. When she returns, so does her conversation with Christian. They cannot seem to stay away from each other. Before ending their conversation, Christian reveals that he is having dinner with an "old friend". This makes Ana jealous, and she asks him if it is "Mrs. Robinson"- the woman who exposed him to the BDSM lifestyle when he was only 15 years old, and with whom he is still friends. She sends the email and goes to bed. When out for drinks with her mother the next evening, Christian responds to Ana's question. Yes. It was "Mrs. Robinson". He insists she is just an old friend and that there is

nothing for her to worry about. Ana is incensed. She quickly emails him back while her mother is away, angrily demanding answers and asserting views. He responds that it is not a subject he wishes to discuss via email, and asks her how many Cosmos is she going to drink? Ana realizes the Christian is there.

CHAPTER 23

Christian walks up and s Ana and her mother at the bar, surprising them both. Ana's mother is awestruck and quite taken with Christian as he introduces himself. He orders a drink and sits down. They have a bit of idle chit chat and Christian declares that he is retiring to his room. Carla excuses herself to the restroom, leaving Ana and Christian to have a private moment. They discuss Christian's relationship with "Mrs. Robinson", and it is revealed to Christian that Ana is jealous, which he likes. Christian tells Ana that his relationship with "Mrs. Robinson" ended when her husband found out and that they are still friends and business partners. Ana asks if he loved her, but they are interrupted by the return of Ana's mother and Christian takes his leave. Ana's mother can tell that there is an issue between Ana and Christian. She urges Ana to talk to him and work it out. She says that it is obvious that they are crazy for each other and the only way to fix the problem is to communicate. She talks Ana into staying to speak with Christian; which she does. During their conversation, Christian tells Ana that he didn't love "Mrs. Robinson". She is very relieved to hear this news. They are supposed to be talking about their issues, however, they end up having a kinky sex session first. During this session, they are having a bath and Ana notices the scars on his body, which she had previously thought were from chicken pox. Having learned from his mother, though, that Christian had hardly been affected by the Chicken Pox, Ana correctly surmised that the scars must be from someone who had been stubbing their cigarettes out on his skin. Ana asks if the person responsible is "Mrs. Robinson", and Christian says no. Christian attempts to explain to Ana that "Mrs. Robinson" is not the ‘monster' Ana seems to think she is. He attests that "Mrs. Robinson" saved him from an even more destructive path. He reveals that he talks to her about everything, including Ana herself. This is very off-putting to Ana, but Christian curb-tails her temper, putting up his defenses yet again. He asks her about how she truly feels regarding their possible arrangement. She its that she rather enjoyed the spanking, but still seems unsure of making a full commitment. During their conversation in the tub, Ana splashes Christian out of exasperation, which, of course, leads to yet more rough sex. After they finish, they lay talking a bit more

and end the night in a peaceful place.

CHAPTER 24

Christian wakes Ana 5:30 am. He tells her to get dressed because he has a surprise for her. Their conversation on the drive to their destination revolves around Christian's past Submissive girlfriends. She learns that "Mrs. Robinson"'s real name is Elena. Christian reveals that quite of few of his ex's wanted more out of the relationship than he was willing to give, but that he is willing to give Ana more. Ana is thrilled at this news. Their surprise destination is at an airfield. Christian takes Ana flying gliders, and she is not intimidated in the least. Her enthusiasm pleases Christian. This excursion serves as an olive branch to Ana. Christian wants to give her more and was hoping that showing her life aspect of his life would qualify. Ana attests that it does. After their early morning activity, Christian drops Ana off at her mother's house and promises to see her there for dinner later that evening. Ana's mother is beside herself, trying to clean the house and prepare a meal fit for Christian's elite tastes.While grocery shopping for the meal, Ana receives the news that she has landed the job that she wanted. After hanging up with her new employer, Ana notices a missed call from Christian. She calls him back and he informs her that he's had to fly back to Seattle for a "situation", though he doesn't clarify what it is. Ana and her parents have a nice evening celebrating Ana's new job. Ana does not receive an email from Christian informing her that he has arrived in Seattle safely, so she takes it upon herself to message him. They have a quick chat and Ana heads to bed.

CHAPTER 25

Ana leaves Georgia and heads back to Seattle. Before her plane takes off, she has a quick conversation with Christian. His tone is worrying and she wonders again at what his ‘situation' is that called him away so quickly. She arrives in Seattle eight hours later, and Taylor is waiting to pick her up. Upon arriving at Christian's building, she nervously hurries indie, anxious to see Christian again. He is on the phone- obviously an important call- when she arrives and is visibly agitated. When his call is over he rushes to Ana, fervent and heated and completely primal in his needs. She s him in the shower, per his request and they engage in a steamy exchange of sexual pleasures. They enjoy a meal together after their carnal explorations and Christian informs Ana that her room now has a full stocked walk-in closet. She does not argue. He tells her to get ready in her room and meet him in the playroom. Ana is nervous and excited when he s her in the playroom. He reminds her that they have safe-words"yellow" and "red"- and she wonders what he has in store for her. He ties her up on the bed- one handcuffed to each post- and blindfolds her while placing earbuds in her ears, playing a Latin song that sounds like a heavenly choir. Christian massages Ana's shoulders afterward and they have a pleasant discussion.

CHAPTER 26:

Ana awakens to Christian playing the piano- sad music again. Christian ceases playing and attempts to seduce Ana again. She stops him, wanting to talk about the status and nature of their relationship. Christian reveals that he believes the contract is moot, at this point. He still wants Ana to follow the rules he's written for her, but no longer feels it is necessary for her to sign a written document stipulating the of their relationship. Ana appreciates his concession, though she is still bothered by the fact that Christian takes enjoyment in her pain and truly wants to punish her. She likens her distaste of his punishments to be as severe as his hatred of being touched. This seems to resonate deeply with Christian. Ana feels bad and suggests that he shows her exactly what it is that he desires to do to her, without holding back for her sake. They proceed to the playroom- more aptly called the "Red Room of Pain" in this instance- where Christian whips Ana with a belt repeatedly and violently. Ana is beyond mortified. When he finishes, she runs away from him. She can not stand to be near him; her hatred of him is palpable and it breaks her heart that the man she loves so dearly is so emotionally wounded that this is the only way for him to have any true satisfaction. She leaves Christian and both are crushed and devastated that the other is unable, or unwilling to give in. Ana becomes coolly detached from Christian. She is hurting and just wants to put this heartbreak behind her as soon as possible. She asks for the money that he'd gotten for selling her car and Taylor takes her home. She collapses in her new, strange apartment, feeling utterly empty and alone.

Character Analysis of 50 Shades of Grey

Anastasia Steele- She becomes the object of Christian Grey’s desires; she is described as being “innocent”. She is a transparent, taciturn and reserved/shy/quiet, insecure, yet intelligent, feisty and determined individual.

Christian Grey- He is Anastasia Steele's infatuation. He is an elusive, yet brilliant self-made billionaire businessman. His cocky, controlling/possessive, and intimidating demeanor only serves to highlight his position of power and authority, though it does not diminish his intelligence and tenacity. He follows a BDSM sexual lifestyle and lures Anastasia into being his Submissive.

Katherine “Kate” Kavanagh- It is her illness that is the initial reason for Anastasia and Christian’s meeting. A very sociable and outgoing person, Kate is perfect as the head of the WSU school newspaper. She is flirtatious and confident, with good looks to back up all of her attitude. She begins a romantic relationship with Christian Grey’s brother, Elliot.

José Rodriguez- He attends WSU with Kate and Ana, though he will not graduate until the following year. He is an artist and is hired by Kate and Ana to photograph Christian Grey for Kate's article. He has had a crush on Ana for quite awhile and does not take kindly to her relationship with Christian Grey.

Elliot Grey- Christian’s brother takes an avid interest in Ana’s roommate, the illustrious Katherine Kavanagh. He and Kate begin having a serious of sexual escapades, the carnal nature of which seems to shock Ana, who is continually subjected to their displays of affection.

Jason Taylor “Taylor”- His position is never given a clear title, but we are led to understand his role through the various tasks he performs for Grey. He is a kind of butler and bodyguard combination, yet on a more intimidating scale, as he seems wholly and completely devoted to Grey- and to keeping his secrets.

Paul Clayton- Brother of the owner of Clayton’s Hardware store, where Ana works. He is interested in Ana and, when he is in the store, he inevitably asks her out. Ana always shuts him down, yet still, he persists. That is, until he learns of Ana’s affiliation with Christian Grey.

Dr. Grace Trevelyan Grey- Christian's mother seems genuinely surprised, yet excited, when she first meets Ana. They meet again, when Ana accompanies Christian to his parent's house for a family dinner, and she is warm and welcoming.

Carrick Grey- We are not given much information on Christian’s adoptive father, although it seems he and his son have a fine relationship, based on mutual respect.

Mia Grey- Mia, Christian’s little sister, studies advanced culinary techniques from an instructor in Paris. She is ecstatic to meet Ana, having heard all about her from her and Christian’s mother.

Ethan Kavanagh- He attends his sister, Kate’s, and Ana’s graduation ceremony; his familiarity with Anastasia puts Christian on edge.

Carla Adams- She is on her fourth marriage. She is prevented from attending Ana’s graduation ceremony because her current husband, Bob, has hurt his foot and needs looking after. She provides Ana with encouragement and comfort throughout her ordeals.

Ray Steele- Although he was not her biological father and he and Ana’s mother, Carla, have been divorced for years, Ray is a consistent ive and loving figure in Ana’s life.

Bob Adams- Anastasia’s current stepfather badly injures his foot, resulting in Ana’s mother being unable to attend her graduation ceremony.

Conclusion to 50 Shades of Grey

This tale ends in heartbreak and disappointment on both ends. Ana is unable to accept Christian's true desires, and he, likewise, is unable to desire less. Ana knows that he will never reciprocate her feelings in the way she wants, and is determined to let him go and move on. The struggle to hold on to her free will, yet please Christian by obeying his every demand, proves to be too heavy a burden, and Christian and Ana part ways.

An alternate ending for this book would be bittersweet, as is the ending presented. If the conclusion of this story is not heartbreak, it would mean that Ana remains with Christian, suffering at his twisted desires, yet sated in the knowledge that he is hers completely- as she would be his.

When we next encounter Christian and Anastasia, they are celebrating their honeymoon in Monaco. They reminisce about their wedding day and the events post and prior to their nuptials. They deal with Christian’s insecurity, and Ana’s. Security is increased when danger from Jack Hyde becomes a reality. He is eventually captured and everything is resolved. Throughout, Christian and Ana test the bounds of their love, and find they are limitless. Ana proves herself to be a hero and saves Mia’s life, while protecting her’s and her unborn baby’s.

The author of 50 Shades Freed was born March 7th, 1963 in England. Her name is Erika Mitchell, though she now writes under the pseudonym of E. L. James. After graduating from the University of Kent, she went on to become a studio manager's assistant at the National Film and Television School. In 1987, she married screenwriter, Niall Leonard. They have two sons and reside in London, England. Her first attempts at publication resulted in a few Kindle books written under the pen name "Snowqueen's Icedragon".

This story takes place all around the globe including, the South of , the Mediterranean Sea, London, and many states in America. For much of the story, Ana and Christian are staying aboard a fancy boat, the Fair Lady.

PROLOGUE

The prologue begins with Christian having a nightmare which describes the horror that Christian Grey faced as a child, when his biological mother ed away in front of him. He writhes around in his sleep, terrified. Ana is there to comfort him, and he seems to cling to her presence for comfort and . He holds on to her desperately and promises that they will make their wedding vows- and relationship- work sans the obedience clause.

CHAPTER 1

Ana and Christian are enjoying their honeymoon in Monaco. Ana reminisces about Christian’s marriage proposal. Christian and Ana play around in the ocean. Ana tries to seduce Christian, but he is unwilling due to the people that are regarding them with interest from the beach. After their swim, we reflect back on the wedding. Christian and Ana are both ecstatic with each other and are in a hurry to begin their new life together. Ana does not promise to obey Christian in her vows. Although, Christian tells her to wear her wedding gown until he can take it off himself, and she obliges him. After the ceremony, Christian and Ana head off on their honeymoon, the destination of which is saved as a surprise for Ana. They board Christian’s private jet at Sea-Tac (the airport in Seattle), enjoy a delicious dinner and Christian reveals that they are going to London, which holds a special place in Ana’s heart. He then tells her that they are also going to Paris and the South of . They retire to the bedroom aboard the jet and engage in their preferred brand of fornication. The remembrance is revealed to be a dream of Ana’s as she lay sunbathing. Christian is furious when he sees Ana. She has fallen asleep on her stomach with her top undone, yet had rolled over at some point, showing her breasts to anyone who happened to be close enough to see.

CHAPTER 2

Christian onishes Ana for being careless and falling asleep with her top undone. They recall the difficulties they’d had when the news of their engagement had been leaked and paparazzi bombarded Ana. Ana apologizes and Christian takes her back to the boat, Fair Lady, via a thrilling jet-ski ride. They board the boat- their attitudes reflecting the carefree atmosphere of their exhilarating time on the jet ski- and enjoy a drink. They have discourse regarding Ana getting used to her new, lavish lifestyle, and Ana reflects on the events leading up to their conversation about a pre-nuptial agreement. Christian made it clear to Ana, when discussing the pre-nup that his money means nothing without her. If she were to leave, no matter how much money he had, he would still be left with nothing. Christian interrupts her reminiscence, telling her she will “get used” to having so much money. After they enjoy their drinks, Christian and Ana retire to the master cabin, and Ana wonders what he’s got planned this time. He produces two pairs of metal handcuff and tells Ana to pick a safe-word. She is excited and expectant, knowing that her husband wants to punish her for her bikini-top transgression, and eagerly anticipating his particular brand of punishment. They share an intense love-making session, and Ana has her most intense climax that she’s ever had. She falls asleep and awakens to Christian working. Their boat is on the move, heading toward Cannes, . Ana goes to use the restroom, leaving a disgruntled-looking Christian behind. When looking in the mirror, Ana notices the results of their love-making session in the form of hickeys covering most of her breasts.

CHAPTER 3

Ana is livid that Christian has marked her like a teenager. She returns to him and ignores him as he anxiously asks if she’s okay. She throws her brush at him furiously and runs out onto the bow in enraged silence. Christian follows her out and they argue for a few minutes, quickly forgiving each other and moving on to dinner. After dinner and dessert, they continue in to the main salon and begin dancing. Their love is almost a tangible thing when Christian asks her to come to bed with him. In the morning, Ana awakens and finds Christian shaving in the bathroom. She had discovered that Christian will never lock the door to a room if he is in it alone. Though she doesn’t like to dwell on that uncomfortable fact and its significance. Ana asks Christian why he likes to braid her hair. Christian responds that he’s not sure, but thinks it’s just habit. He begins to look distraught and Ana changes the subject. They casually joke about the time Christian shaved her, and then they slip into the memory. Ana attempts to shave her bikini area, and does a poor job. Christian, however, is still delighted. He tells Ana that she is full of surprises and he loves that about her. Then he takes upon the task of shaving her bikini area thoroughly. The memory recedes and Christian surmises that the occasion had been fun, while Ana its her arousal only to herself. Christian finishes his shave and Ana decides to give him a shave, herself. Christian asks her if he can take her to do something for the day, and Ana comes back with a sarcastic retort regarding her hickey-covered breasts and sun-bathing definitely not being an option. He ignores her attitude and they discuss the possibility of buying some art for their new house in a hilltop village called Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Ana is reluctant though, having a lack of knowledge about art. When Christian mentions his architect, Gia Matteo, Ana becomes more foul tempered but doesn’t want to come off as a jealous wife. Christian can tell something is wrong and, when pressed, Ana tells him she is just hungry, knowing this will grab his attention and the subject will be dropped.

They spend their time in Saint-Paul-de-Vence looking at various themes of antique paintings. They buy three paintings of red peppers for five thousands

euros ($5,299.60 USD) each, and Ana marvels at the price. Christian, again, tells her to “get used to it”, referring to being so inconceivably wealthy. They have lunch and Christian reveals that he thinks he used to braid his biological mother’s hair when he was a child, and that’s why he braids hers. Ana tells him that she likes it when he braids her hair, and then suggests that she believes Christian really did love his mother. This seems to upset Christian. He quickly walks away without speaking, and Ana is concerned that she may have pushed him too far. Christian insists that there is no point in revisiting the past, as it is all behind him. Ana is not so sure it is truly behind him. Christian and Ana continue on their outing. They walk near a jewelry store and Christian decides to stop and ends up buying Ana a thirty thousand euro ($31,804.50 USD) floral bracelet. He doesn’t buy it for her, though it adorns her arm. It serves the practical purpose of covering up the red marks on Ana’s wrists; a result of their bedroom forays. Christian declares only that he needs Ana to wear the bracelet, leaving her to ponder the many reasons why. They leave the jewelry store and, in the car, Christian inspects her ankles. Ana, at first thinks he is trying to seduce her in the backseat, but quickly realizes that he is checking for marks from the handcuffs. She insists that she isn’t hurt. Christian seems to accept her comment, but still seems disgruntled. He its that seeing the marks makes him feel uncomfortable and Ana comforts him, affirming that she enjoyed every minute of being in the handcuffs- though she reiterates that she does not enjoy being marked like property, referring back to the hickeys. They begin to caress each other when Christian receives a phone call. It is his business associates calling about a fire in the server room at Grey House. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the damage was minimal. There is an air of suspicion surrounding the event, which makes Ana uneasy. The possible arson brings back memories of Charlie Tango’s sabotage, and leaves Ana apprehensive of the future.

CHAPTER 4

Christian is preoccupied with the happenings at Grey House and Ana’s patience is wearing thin. She decides she wants go shopping. And she wants to take the jet ski to the mainland to do so. She finds Taylor and tell him of her intentions. Taylor is hesitant, doubting that Christian would approve and desperately wanting to keep his job. Ana takes matters into her own hands, interrupting Christian during a phone call with his assistant. She informs him that she would like to go shopping and Christian gladly approves. Ana neglects to tell him that she wants to take the jet ski, though, and she, Taylor and Gaston- one of twin bodyguards- head out for the day. Ana has a blast riding around on the jet ski. Christian finds out and is not as pleased. He scolds Taylor for allowing it to happen and onishes Ana for taking part in something that could be dangerous. Ana and Christian move past it fairly quickly and Ana continues on her shopping excursion. She deliberately es by the large, expensive chain stores, and buys a trinket costing five euros from a small tourist shop. Ana decides that she wants to purchase something for Christian but has some trouble deciding on what it should be. She is inspired by a memory of their time at the Louvre and a comment Christian had made, when iring a painting, about the female form and its appeal in all forms of representations. Ana calls Jose and asks for his assistance with the risky idea she’s forming.

Back at the boat, Christian finds Ana just as she finishes wrapping his gift. He ires her new ankle bracelet and Ana delivers him his gift. Christian is stunned, as he is not accustomed to receiving presents. Upon opening the gift, he seems confused. It is a Nikon camera. Ana explains that she knows of his affinity towards nude photographs and paintings and she thought he might like to take some of her. Christian explains that he used the photos she’s seen before in his closet, as insurance. He seems deeply conflicted; understanding that he has a desire to objectify women, yet slowly becoming disturbed by that fact, leaves him unable to compose himself. Christian sits in silence as Ana tries to dissect the situation. She poses questions, garnering no response, and finally picks up

the camera and begins taking pictures of Christian. This seems to loosen him up a bit and they begin to joke around. Christian pushes Ana onto the bed, takes the camera, and begins to take pictures of her. He declares that he believes she should be laughing in the pictures and proceeds to tickle her mercilessly. He stops abruptly, telling her that she is beautiful as he hungrily smothers her in a ionate kiss. The intensity of their love is reflected in the fervent sensuality of their copulation. Christian is noticeably affected by some inner demons, and Ana picks up this intuitively. She can sense something is wrong, especially when his need and urgency become almost primal in nature. After they reach simultaneous completion and are lying next to each other, Ana asks Christian why he’s upset. Christian keeps silent, and Ana becomes frustrated. She begins to recite their wedding vows, hoping to entice him to open up to her. He is visibly touched by her efforts, and recites his own vows back to her. Ana, is touched, as well, yet still unsatisfied. She begs Christian to tell her, so that she may uphold her vows. This is Christian’s undoing and he reveals that the fire in the Grey House server room was, indeed, arson. Ana thanks Christian for telling her and they discuss the ramifications of the crime. Ana realizes that neither of them had even bothered to remove their clothes and giggles, which reminds Christian of their tickling escapade. Ana attempts to tickle Christian, but he blanches and asks her not to, as he was never tickled as a child. This serves as yet another reminder of Christian’s tragic past and the broken man he’s become. Ana ruminates on the depth of her loves for Christian and states that she thinks his therapist, Dr. Flynn, should help him more. Christian agrees, and they discuss where to have dinner. They agree on dining aboard the boat, per Christian’s wishes, and he takes a picture of the both of them in their post-coital bliss.

Later, Christian and Ana are visiting the Palace of Versailles. In the Hall of Mirrors, Ana remarks on the Palace’s creator, likening his power-hungry ways to Christian’s own predisposition. Christian states that he would build a Hall of Mirrors, just to see the way her hair looks in the light. After their visit, Christian and Ana enjoy coffee together. Christian remarks that they only have two days let on their honeymoon and asks Ana if there is anything else she’s like to do. Ana replies that she just wants to be with him. Christian is pleased at this, but declares that he needs an hour to check emails and make phone calls. Ana tries to hide her disappointment as Christian leaves to tend to his business. Ana decides to return some messages, herself. She replies to her mother’s inquiry about how they are enjoying their honeymoon. When she finishes, she receives a

message from Kate. She has heard about the fire at Christian’s company and asks if it is arson. Ana correctly surmises that Kate is looking for an angle for a story and steers the conversation away from the fire and on to their mutual friends. They sign off and Ana decides to check and see if Christian is finished with his work.

Ana has a disturbing dream involving Christian in the Hall of Mirrors. It seems to symbolize her apprehension and fear of his continuous absence, while he deals with his business and the dangerous situations that may entail. Ana awakens in a panic and finds immediate relief in Christian’s presence. He soothes her, and Ana knows in her core that losing him would be more than she could ever bear.

CHAPTER 5

Christian wakes up before Ana and she is panicked as she reaches out into the nothingness. Christian calms her and assures her that everything is okay. Ana tries to hide her worries and asks if he’d been watching her sleep. At his affirmative response, she nervously wonders what she may have said whilst unconscious. They are both worried about the other, and Ana is saddened when she realizes this is the last day of their honeymoon. Christian playfully suggests that there is something he’d like to do and leads Ana out of the bedroom. He surprises her with a jet ski ride- in which SHE is the driver. They joke about her driving skills, and race off towards the Nice Côte d'Azur Airport. Ana is startled by a low-flying jet and capsizes the both of them. After ascertaining that they are both safe, they laugh off the incident and head back.

While waiting in the first class lounge for their flight to Seattle, Ana takes a few pictures of Christian as he reads a financial newspaper. They discuss the arsonist and Ana takes a few more pictures to ease the tension.

Arriving home, Christian carries a sleepy Ana over the threshold. He jokingly teases her about putting on weight and they toast their marriage with two flutes of Bollinger’s pink champagne. Christian acknowledges Ana’s, yet at the mention of his desire to retire to the bedroom and not sleep, she happily acquiesces. Upon waking at dawn, Ana has a rare opportunity to watch Christian sleeping and resists the urge to kiss and touch him. She ruminates on returning to work and begins thinking about the fire and her husband’s continued desire to ‘protect’ her from the truth. Christian wakes and dispels Ana’s train of thought.

Christian and Ana are heading to Christian’s parent’s house for Sunday lunch. Ana asks if Christian would ever let her drive the Audi R8. Christian says he

would, though he would punish her if she dented it. Ana becomes slightly indignant at the implication that he cares more for the vehicle than for her. He laughs off her comments and they continue the ride in cheerful companionship. Ana notes that Christian has been in good spirits since leaving his study earlier that morning. She realizes that her own acutely foul mood stems from her fear of Christian reverting back to his old, closed-off ways. She teases him out of exasperation and notices that he is insecure of himself at times. They both affirm that they are trying to work on their individual communication issues and the fact calms and soothes the previously edgy atmosphere.

During lunch at his parents’ house, Christian reveals that Gia will be coming over the next evening to finalize details on their architectural plans. Ana is displeased that Christian has made these plans without consulting her, and her jealously of Gia is revived. Throughout the lunch, Ana is unable to shake off her unhappy mood until Christian threatens to take her into the boathouse to spank her. As they are finishing their dessert, it begins to rain and everyone rushes inside. Grace and Ana discuss hers and Christians honeymoon as the others converse amongst themselves. Suddenly all conversation stops as everyone is awed by Christian as he sings quietly. Christian becomes nervous and the idle chit-chat is pointedly resumed. Grace whole-heartedly thanks Ana for being such a boon in Christian’s life. Ana and Christian leave and Christian allows Ana to drive the R8. Ana races onto the highway, making Christian nervous. She jets in front of their security accompaniment, and soon after, Christian receives a phone call. Ana can tell something is wrong, though he just tells her to keep driving. He warns her, trying not to scare her, than he believes they are being followed. He tells her to speed up after she takes their next exit. The dash in and out of traffic, darting around corners and running lights, until they finally come to a stop and hide out in a parking garage. The security detail, which is composed of Sawyer and Ryan, follows the car that’s been tailing them and confirms that they have successfully eluded the unknown driver. Ana is filled with adrenaline and her emotions get the best of her. She begins to cry and Christian comforts her with a kiss. The kiss quickly becomes ionate and they have quickie in the parking lot. Their tensions released, Christian climbs into the driver’s seat. He call their security and it is revealed that the driver is a female. They reach the underground parking garage at Escala and discuss Ana’s driving capabilities. She states that he may buy her own white Audi R8 for her birthday, which Christian finds amusing. They meet a neighbor that is new to their building when boarding the

elevator to the apartment building. The neighbor seems polite, yet intimidated by them and Christian remarks that Ana’s made another irer. Ana rolls her eyes and Christian is delighted at the opportunity that provides. They are both yearning for their particular brand of fornication and Christian informs Sawyer that he expects a detailed report on the afternoon’s happenings, in one hour. Then, he and Ana head off to begin their allotted hour of fun.

CHAPTER 6

Ana’s and Christian’s intense copulation, in which Ana becomes introduced to anal play, serves to help them both relieve the stress and tension incurred during the frightening possible attempt on their lives. They enjoy a hot bath together and talk about going over plans for their new house later that evening. Ana mentions getting ready to go back to work and Christian tells her she doesn’t have to. Ana tells him not to even bring up that subject and they finish their luxurious bath. After their bath, Ana dresses and goes to retrieve her clothes from the ‘playroom’. She hears Christian shouting at Sawyer through his office door and feels sympathy for him. She takes her clothes from the playroom and sees one of their ‘tools’ they’d used, waiting to be cleaned. Ana decided that she might as well be the one to clean it, and takes it along with her outfit. On her way back, she runs into Mrs. Jones, their housekeeper, who asks if she may help Ana with the clothes. Ana is embarrassed and declines the offer of assistance. They witness Sawyer leaving Christian’s office in a huff, obviously upset at the events that have just transpired. Ana is thankful for the interruption and uses it as a reason for a quick getaway. She goes to her bedroom and proceeds to wash the anal plug in their bathroom.

Ana goes to her library, grateful that Christian had bestowed it to her and equipped it with a desk so that she can have a place to work. She reflects on how Christian will react when he learns of her intent to keep her maiden name at work. She begins on her task of sorting through the pictures on the Nikon camera she’d bought for Christian. She is stunned to learn that he has taken tons of pictures of her while she’d slept and other times, without her knowledge. Whilst looking through the pictures, Ana begins thinking about the mysterious woman who has been trying to hurt them. She becomes overwhelmed with the need to check on Christian and make sure he is safe. She abandons her task and runs to his office. She barges in and, finding him on the phone, climbs onto his lap and curls up, needing his reassurance. He holds her, continuing his call. He is on the phone, reviewing the security footage from the time that the fire had

occurred at Grey House. The image zooms in and focuses on a man’s face and Ana immediately recognizes him as being Jack Hyde, Ana’s former boss.

CHAPTER 7

Ana ascertains that it is certainly Jack Hyde, though he may have been wearing a wig or cut and dyed his hair. Christian remarks that Ana seems to have studied her ex-boss quite extensively to be able to recognize him under these circumstances. He puts in the order to extensively monitor Jack Hyde and ends his call. Ana and Christian lovingly banter and Ana leaves to make him something to eat. Christian finds his way into the kitchen shortly thereafter, and they joke about her being barefoot in the kitchen. Ana remarks that the saying is ‘barefoot and pregnant’ and this makes Christian anxious. He its that he wants kids, though he is not ready to share Ana quite yet. Ana affirms that she is like-minded, and they move on to discussing the plans for their new house. When they finish, they retire to the TV room, though Christian isn’t much of a fan of television. Ana suggests that they make out and this leads to a conversation about the fact that Christian has never done this and Ana has on more than one occasion. Christian becomes jealous, and Ana finds it endearing. They begin making out like, acting like teenagers, including the dry humping. The eventually get wrapped up and in their ion and end up making love on the floor of the TV room. Ana jokes that they’ve completely skipped third base. They retire to their bedroom for the night, and the next morning, are off to their respective jobs.

Ana is welcomed back warmly, and quickly sets to work. She sorts through her urgent correspondence for a couple of hours before she is due for a meeting with [her boss,] Roach. She receives an email from Christian inquiring as to why she hasn’t changed her name at work. Ana writes back that she wants to keep her maiden name at work, and, getting no response, hopes that he is not too upset. During her two hour meeting, Ana observes that her colleagues are treating her differently than before she’d left for her honeymoon. She wonders at this and is deeply troubled. As she reviews the material from the meeting, Roach comes to her office, along with Christian, and she knows he is upset over her lack of a name change. Christian reveals his future intent of buying the publishing

company for which she works and naming it Grey Publishing. It was to be her wedding gift from him. Now, though, he asks if he should be naming it Steele Publishing, instead. Ana is appalled at his continued generosity, and declares that she knows nothing about running a business. Christian and Ana argue a bit about his overly generous and overbearing behavior and Ana finally agrees to change her last name at work to Grey. Later that evening, Ana is still upset over Christian’s childish demands made earlier and she and Christian have a confrontation.

CHAPTER 8

Gia arrives to discuss their blueprints for the new house, and the atmosphere is tense. Christian, himself, seems to be uncomfortable around Gia. Her flirtatious demeanor and tendency to lightly touch Christian’s arm when talking, created an unpleasant atmosphere. Christian leaves to discuss something important with Taylor, and Ana and Gia are left on their own. Ana uses this opportunity to forcibly, yet politely, tell Gia to get her hands off of Christian. Gia is flustered, but assures Ana that she will steer clear of Christian as often as possible. Christian returns and notices Gia’s cool departure. Ana eludes his implications and inquiries about his business with Taylor. Christian informs her that it’s been revealed that Jack Hyde has not been in his apartment for weeks. Christian asks her about the plans she’s made for their house to distract her from the dangerous situation still unfolding.

The conversation covers a few other topics, such as their mutual jealousy issues and, again, Ana’s name change. They finally come to an agreement that she will change her name, and both are pleased at the resolution. Christian asks Ana to cut his hair, and Ana balks at the idea, having no professional experience. Though, when Christian mentions the possibility of going to Franco, Ana leaps into action. Somehow, even something as simple and routine as a haircut is made into an intense sensual experience. When they finish, Christian still needs his haircut and Ana goes to retrieve the scissors. On her way, she encounters and quickly hides from Taylor and Mrs. Jones and is appalled to see them kiss. She hurries into Christian’s study and opens the drawer to his desk. Instead of the scissors, Ana is surprised, yet again, when she finds a fully loaded revolver. She quickly puts it back, locates to scissors and returns to her husband. As she is cutting his hair, we learn that Christian is paying for Taylor’s daughter’s school fees, in hopes that will ensure his continued employment. Ana insists that Taylor likes Christian regardless. Ana finishes the haircut, and Christian is very pleased with the results. As they are getting ready for bed a thought occurs to Ana, making her laugh. Christian asks her what she finds humorous. Ana replies that

she’d been thinking about creating a safe-word for when he’s being too domineering outside of the bedroom. She reveals that she doesn’t want to run a company. Christian begs her to just think about it and not rule it out. She does not reply, but asks him what he meant when he’d told her to take her anger out on him in bed. He asked what she’d thought he’d meant, and she responds that he was hinting he wanted to be tied up. This puts a fear in Christian so deeprooted, Ana immediately realized the weight of her words and consoled her husband. She assured him that she would never want to do this to him, and she had merely misunderstood what he’s meant to imply. The hold each other and are, again, prisoners of their own love.

CHAPTER 9

Christian reveals that he has an intense dislike for guns. Ana begs him to learn how to use one, but he refuses. They talk about Leila, the ex whose gun of which Christian is now in possession. Ana asks where Leila is, concerned she may have been the one racing through the streets to get to them. Christian assures her than Leila is where she supposed to be. It is suspected by Ana that Christian is financing Leila’s rehabilitation. While this bothers her immensely, she also knows her husband believes he is simply doing the right thing. They each return to their respective occupations and email back and forth throughout the day. Christian leaves for his business trip in New York two days later, leaving a lonely Ana behind to pine after him. He calls as soon as he lands, much to Ana’s relief. He tells Ana, repeatedly, to be careful and listen to their security detail. He also asks her not to go out with Kate but, rather, have her come over to their penthouse. That evening, when Kate arrives at Ana’s office, she entices Ana into going to have a cocktail together. Ana gives in, though promising they can have only one. Prescott and Sawyer, their security for the evening. Take the ladies to the bar, against their better judgment. On the way, Kate reveals to Ana that she knows much more about the Jack Hyde “situation” than Ana does, herself. At the bar, they discuss Gia, and Kate tells Ana that Elliot had previously had a fling with her. Ana tells Kate how she’d laid down the law with Gia, threatening to fire her if she tried anything with Christian. Kate is amazed and awed at Ana’s post-marriage personality transformation. She tells Ana that she seems much more confident, and Ana glows under Kate’s praise. They leave the bar after five drinks, instead of the agreed upon one, and Ana knows that Prescott has already told Christian of her disobedience and is most likely livid with her. Sure enough, this is the case exactly. Ana checks her phone and sees missed calls and an angry text and email from Christian. She responds, trying to ease the situation, but Christian doesn’t reply. After dropping off Kate, Sawyer and Prescott drive Ana home. Upon arriving, they are met with a distressing scene. The house is ransacked, and Ryan calls from the other room that they’ve caught the person responsible. They restrain the criminal and call Ana into the room. It is confirmed that the intruder is Jack Hyde.

CHAPTER 10

Ana’s drunken state does nothing to help her assess the situation. Jack Hyde is unconscious on the floor, and Ana makes sure everyone is safe an ed for. She inquires as to how he’d gotten in and the details surrounding what happened after. Not being able to reach Christian, Ana instructs the security team to call the police. After a long night of questioning, Ana finally makes it to bed. She awakens in the morning to Christian, sitting on a chair in a disheveled tuxedo. He is furious at Ana for disobeying him direct orders. She wins him over with her love, though he is still very upset with her. She falls back asleep while Christian goes about dealing with the ramifications of Jack Hyde’s break in. A couple of hours later, Ana awakens to a fresh, cold cup of orange juice and he tasty husband getting ready to take a shower. Without hesitation, and hoping to close the emotional distance between them, Ana slips out of her clothes and s him in the shower. She attempts to caress him, but he rebukes her. She is deeply hurt and tries to appease Christian by reiterating the fact that because she disobeyed him, she wasn’t home when Jack broke in. This infuriates Christian even more, and he tells Ana that he doesn’t want to discuss it. Christian is in his study by the time Ana dresses and come to the great room. She attempts to go in to talk with him, but he makes it clear that she is not welcome at that time. She returns to the breakfast table, where she sees Taylor. They have a pleasant discourse and Taylor excuses himself to Christian. Ana eats and goes to get ready for work. Christian is surprised to find that she intends to go to work that day and insists that Prescott and Taylor accompany her.

Upon arriving at her work, there is a group of reporters waiting for her. She is still apprehensive about the paparazzi, after the leak about hers and Christian’s engagement, and asks Taylor to drive around to the delivery entrance. Throughout the day Christian and Ana exchange a few heated emails, after Ana realizes that Christian must have come home just because she’d disobeyed him and gone out to drink with Kate, and not because of Jack Hyde. They are both angry with each other and resolve to discuss the situation further that evening.

Before the work day ends, Ana give a formal statement to a detective about the previous evenings happenings.

Sawyer and Prescott accompany Ana back to Escala and Ana gets a shock as she enters the great room.

CHAPTER 11

Christian is dressed in a tight black shirt and Ana’s favorite pair of jeans. They are both aware of how much they mean to each other and how much the other is hurting. They make up and, before Ana will submit to going to the bedroom, she demands that Christian give her some answers as to what, exactly, is the situation with Jack Hyde. Christian, defeated, tells her how he knew Jack had been targeting his family from files they’d found on his computer. Ana knows that there is something he is keeping from her, but her growling stomach interrupts and Christian insists she eats. He promises they will finish talking, after she eats. He blindfolds her and gives her mouth to mouth drinks of wine and feeding her delicious morsels. They finish eating and take their frolicking to the playroom. Ana realizes after Christian continuously ravages and teases her that he is using sex as revenge. She invokes the safe-word, and Christian is immediately sorry. He releases her hands and feet and tries to console her as she sobs uncontrollably in a release of emotions comparable to a dam breaking. Ana reiterates that she’d never promised to obey him, and says he must stop trying to treat her like a Submissive. Christian is apologetic and promises to try harder. Ana promises to try harder in dealing with his controlling tendencies. They discuss Jack Hyde and Christian reveals that they had found a note, written by Jack to Christian that indicated his intention of kidnapping Ana. They aren’t sure why Jack has a vendetta against Christian, but they suspect the connection lies somewhere in Boston, as that’s where Christian was born.

CHAPTER 12

Christian and Ana continue with multiple rounds of love-making, after which, they go to bed. In the middle of the night, Ana is woken by Christian’s absence. She finds him playing a sorrowful Chopin piece on the piano, and he reveals that he’d had a bad dream about her death. Ana tells him she is fine and to come back to bed. He goes with her, and the next morning they discuss going to Aspen, Colorado. Before boarding the jet, Christian tells Ana he has a surprise for her. Apprehensively she climbs on board and there she sees Kate, Ethan, Elliot and Mia. The conversation on the flight revolves around Jack Hyde, and Ana learns a bit more about his sordid past.

CHAPTER 13

Upon arriving, they all enter and ire the expansive and expensive house. Ana is, again, bewildered and overwhelmed by the amount of money Christian, and now she, possesses. Christian gives Ana a tour and then they the others for lunch. During lunch, Ana again notices that there seems to be some friction between Kate and Elliot and she makes a mental note to ask Kate what is wrong later. They discuss what activities they might be able to do on the rainy day, and it is decided that the men will go fishing while the women go shopping. Elliot announces that he has to get a watch battery in town, and, when he returns, will go fishing. This seems a little strange to Ana, but Kate ignores him and they all go about their business. While out shopping, Ana spies Elliot coming out of a jewelry store with none other than Gia. She watches as Gia laughs at something Elliot says, and he kisses her on the cheek before leaving. Confused at his actions, and concerned for Kate, Ana does not know what to do with this new information. She and Kate exchange a few awkward words when Ana asks if everything is okay between her and Elliot. Kate nods toward, Mia, indicating that she’d rather talk in a more private scenario. They conclude their shopping expedition, and head back to the Aspen house.

Upon returning to the house, Kate and Ana find a few minutes respite, in which they are finally able to converse about what has been bothering Kate. She reveals that Elliot has been distant ever since their night at the bar. The same night that Jack Hyde had attempted to break in and kidnap Ana. Kate tells Ana that Christian had called Elliot and Elliot, in turn, had called her and there had been words all around. This weekend is the first time Kate and Elliot have seen each other since that episode. Ana decides against telling Kate about Elliot’s encounter with Gia just yet.

Ana goes out to the garage to get firewood and encounters Elliot. They have a

short, awkward conversation before Kate comes out looking for Ana. She and Elliot exchanged a few clipped words before Christian and Ethan show up. They converse and disperse and the night moves on.

Ana tells Christian, during their bath, that she’d witnessed Elliot with Gia in town. Christian assures her that Elliot and Gia are simply friends, and that Elliot is quite “stuck on” Kate.

Later, Ana shows Christian the eight hundred and fifty dollar dress she’d bought in town. After having Kate do her hair and makeup, wearing the skimpy number created quite a sight to behold, and Christian is flabbergasted. He does not approve of the amount of skin shown, but allows her to wear due to her exceptional appearance. They all go out to enjoy a nice dinner, and Ana notices, again, the tension between Kate and Elliot. It comes as a shock and surprise to everyone when Elliot suddenly gets down on one knees and asks Kate to marry him.

CHAPTER 14

The entire restaurant explodes with applause for the happy couple and congratulations are given wholeheartedly. The party takes their celebration to an exclusive nightclub, Zax. Christian and Ana are both jealous of the attention the other receives from the opposite sex. At one point, on the dance floor, Ana is lost in the music and, when she feels a man’s presence behind her, she assumes it’s Christian. It is not, however, and, when realizing this, Ana pulls away and slaps him. Christian is by her side within moments, furious. He punches the man, causing a scene. The man apologizes and retreats, and Ana implores Christian to dance with her in hopes of dispelling the unpleasant mood that has befallen them. They all enjoy the rest of the evening and later return to the house. Christian takes care of Ana, removing her makeup, giving her Advil, and getting her ready for bed. He orders her to go to sleep, as he leaves to make a few phone calls.

CHAPTER 15

Upon waking, Christian and Ana discuss the events of the previous evening, mainly the overly friendly man from the club. Christian jokes with Ana about her hitting the man, and its to her that he has an erotic fantasy of fighting with her in bed. Ana obligingly acquiesces his desires. After their dalliance, Ana learns more about Christian’s ever-changing views of his past with Mrs. Robinson. They make love once more, then Ana s the others for breakfast. Christian is outside, speaking with the housekeeper’s husband. Ana notices that something seems off between Ethan and Mia, but is unsure of what it might be. Kate accuses Ana of being obsessed with Christian and Ana replies that Kate is also obsessed with Elliot. They both laugh and rejoice in the fact that they will soon be sisters-in-law.

The group flies back to Seattle from Aspen, and Ana and Christian are forced to return to reality. They are completely enamored with each other and communicate constantly throughout their work days. Christian informs Ana that Jack Hyde has been denied bail and is being held on Kidnapping and arson charges with no court date yet scheduled. Ana goes about her work, editing and attending meetings. Her assistant comes to her office, with Prescott close behind. Ana wonders what is happening and her assistant, Hannah, explains that there is a Leila Williams there to see her. It takes a moment for it to dawn on Ana that Leila Williams is the Leila- Christian’s ex-girlfriend, Leila

CHAPTER 16

Ana emails Christian to let him know that Leila is there and promptly ignores his replies. She has Leila, and her friend, Susi, searched and taken to a conference room. The entire meeting is awkward, yet Ana continues to feel sympathy for the mentally disturbed woman who loves Christian. Christian, however, is furious. He arrives in a hurry, after receiving no response from Ana after her initial email. He yells at Leila and forbids her to come near him or Ana again. He makes it clear that, unless she stay on the other side of the country, he will revoke any and all resources and aid she is currently enjoying at his expense. Leila seems contrite at his onishments and apologizes. Ana still feels sorry for her and, after Leila leaves, is angry with Christian for being so hard on Leila and controlling and secretive with her, his wife. Christian attempts to seduce Ana in the conference room, but she is unwilling to defile her workplace with their debauchery. She comes to the realization that she wants Christian to recognize that he cares for Leila because she is afraid he might suddenly become as cold and distant toward her as he had toward Leila. She finally succumbs to Christian’s erotic suggestions and they head home and put them into action.

After their physical exertions, Ana, again implores Christian to it that he cares about Leila. He finally does, reluctantly, and Ana is pleased to finally put the matter to rest. They go back to enjoying their lives, Leila’s interruption all but forgotten.

Ana receives a call at work from Jose’s father. He informs her that her stepfather, Ray, has been in an accident.

CHAPTER 17

Ana rushes out of her office in full panic mode. Her concern for Ray overrides anything else. In the car, on their way to the airport, Ana updates Christian. He tells her than he has an important meeting that cannot reschedule and he will meet her there in a few hours’ times. Ana’s emotions exhaust her and Sawyer wakes her when they arrive at the hospital. There, Ana meets with Jose and his father, Jose Rodriquez Sr. The story of the accident is explained to Ana, and she is informed that the drunk driver who hit them had been taken into police custody. Christian arrives a few hours later and, not long after, the doctor comes to inform Ana of Ray’s condition. He is in the ICU in a medically-induced coma with severe internal bleeding and swelling on his brain. Ana goes to visit with Ray and tells him about everything she’s been doing and her hopes for him for the future. Christian talks Ana into leaving and going to a hotel to eat and rest. Christian is at a loss in dealing with the reality of Ana’s distressed state. He does everything he possibly can to give her what she needs. They take a bath and converse about off-topic subjects, which helps Ana to relax. Upon arriving back at the hospital to say goodnight to Ray, Christian surprises Ana. When they enter the ICU room housing her dad, Ana is greeted by Christian’s mother, Grace, and her medical colleague. She is assured that Ray is receiving the best care available and that he is doing very well. Ana visit with Ray, while Grace and Christian visit together in the waiting room. Christian and Ana retire to the hotel with Ana in much better spirits.

CHAPTER 18

The next day is Ana’s birthday and she awakens in a panic, ing Ray’s accident. Christian calms her fears, telling her that he’s already called the hospital and Ray is fine. He surprises her with a birthday gift of a beautiful, delicate charm bracelet. Ana loves the sentimental gift, and breaks down in tears from the bittersweet feelings of love and agony that have overwhelmed her. Christian is there to her and Ana is grateful for his presence. As they are leaving the hotel, Christian becomes conspicuously expectant. Ana wonders where their security detail is and is astounded when Taylor drives up to the front of the hotel in a white Audi R8. Christian has bought her the exact car she’d mentioned wanting for her birthday, and Ana is ecstatic. She momentarily forgets her blues over Ray at her excitement of driving the powerful vehicle. She climbs into the driver’s seat, Christian gets in on the enger side, and they head to the hospital to see Ray.

At the hospital, Ray is taken to radiology to check the swelling on his brain. Ana waits for the results of the scan in the waiting room, wondering why her mother hasn’t called to wish her happy birthday. She tries to call her, but gets the machine and hangs up without leaving a message. She and Christian discuss elements of his work and then go to check on Ray before leaving.

After leaving the hospital, Ana decides she wants go for a drive in her new car for her birthday. She and Christian have an enjoyable timing driving around, stopping for lunch when Ana declares she is hungry. After lunch, they return to the hospital. Ana is in good spirits after her fun birthday and the good news that Ray will be woken up from his coma the following day. Ana contemplates calling her mother again, but decides she will do it later. They stay until visiting hours are over, and retire to hotel for a private dinner. They dress in their room, and head downstairs to a private dining area. Opening the doors, Ana is

surprised by all of her friends and family, including her mother. They have all gathered to celebrate her birthday. Ana is overcome with emotion and gratitude toward her husband. Everyone has a wonderful time- Ray’s condition a part of, but not a drag on, the festivities. Ana makes a wish when she blows out her birthday candles, for Ray to get better. The celebration continues in private when they retire, and, in the morning, Ana opens her gifts with her family and friends during breakfast. Everyone heads back to their lives. Ana and her mother visit with Ray. They discuss Ana’s stubbornness and her relationship with Christian. Ana’s mother gives her some marital advice, and Ana accompanies her and Bob to the airport when they leave. Christian and Ana return to the hospital and Ana reads the sports pages to Ray and he awakens.

CHAPTER 19

Ana is ecstatic that Ray is awake and Christian tells her that he will have him moved to Seattle, so that his mother can care for him. They return to the hotel and Ana’s appetite returns voraciously. They eat in their room and pleasure each other into the night, both relieved, relaxed and in love.

The next morning, Christian informs Ana that the detective in charge of Jack Hyde’s case has emailed him, asking to speak with her. They wonder what could be so important for him to come all the way to Portland from Seattle to question her.

They return to the hospital to check on Ray, who is cranky and asks for coffee and doughnuts. Ana and Christian happily oblige him. Christian informs Ana that the detective will be there at four that afternoon to question her. They leave the hospital together, and head to pick up the requested pastries and caffeine.

At four, the detective comes, as promised. He tells Ana that Jack Hyde is accusing her of sexual harassment, and that he insists he is the victim. Ana and Christian are dumbfounded at Hyde’s audacity. Christian is furious that the detective has taken so much time to ask Ana these “ridiculous” questions. Ana clearly and calmly explains to the detectives the actual series of events that had unfolded leading up to Jack Hyde loss of employment. The detective takes her statements and informs them that they are still looking for more concrete evidence, linking Hyde to the sabotage of Christian’s helicopter and that there will be a more involved search of Hyde’s apartment as well. Christian is distressed after the detective leaves, and Ana tries to calm him.

The next day, Ray is in the hospital in Seattle, and Ana visits him briefly. Leaving to let him rest, she runs into her OB/GYN who has been desperately trying to reach her. She informs Ana that she has missed her last four appointments. Ana had not realized she had missed so many and is panicked that she might be pregnant.

She takes a test and, sure enough, it is positive.

CHAPTER 20

She is in utter shock and disbelief. Feeling that she and Christian are not quite ready for this, she fears the worst and her imagination contributes to worried state. Arriving back at the office, she receives an email from Christian. He tells her he misses her and plans to pick her up after work, take her to visit Ray and then go home. Ana stresses all day over how to tell Christian that she is pregnant. He’d previously told her that he wasn’t ready to share her with anyone, and she was unsure of and nervous about his reaction to the news. Christian can tell that something is bothering Ana, but she es it off as concern for Ray and exhaustion. He informs her that he will be going to Taiwan for business soon, and asks her to come with him. She declines, reminding him that she has a job of her own, as well. He is disappointed and can tell that something is still bothering her, but it is put off until later.

They visit Ray, who is in good spirits, though tired. They return to their penthouse apartment and share a strenuous, tension-filled dinner. Christian can finally take it no longer and presses Ana to tell him what’s bothering her. She finally relents, and tells him simply that she’s pregnant. Her fears are confirmed when Christian flies into a panicked rage. He yells and screams at her, calling her stupid and accusing her of getting pregnant on purpose. Finally he storms out of the room, leaving Ana to despair in solitude. She waits up for him all night, finally being awoken by his drunken arrival. He seems to have a more accepting attitude toward the baby, even talking to it before ing out cold in bed. Ana takes care of her inebriated husband, undressing him and getting him into bed. As she is collecting his discarded clothing, she inadvertently sees a message on his Blackberry. It’s from Elena, and the content clearly indicates that that is where Christian had been all night.

CHAPTER 21

Ana is wracked with jealousy. She forwards the message to herself, and then forwards it back to Christian, adding her own message. She is determined that Christian stop seeing Elena, and is prepared to give him an ultimatum. She sleeps alone in the playroom, refusing to give her husband the satisfaction of sharing a bed with her.

The next morning, Ana awakens to Christian calling her through the playroom door. She doesn’t respond, waiting for him to leave before emerging. She heads downstairs and Christian is there, with all the staff, looking handsomely disheveled. She is unsure if he is angry or fearful. She tells Taylor that she will be ready to leave for work shortly, and heads to the bathroom to take a shower. Christian follows her, asking her to talk to him, but she ignores him and goes about getting ready. He finally goads her into talking to him, though their argument solves nothing and Ana leaves for work without saying goodbye. Christian does not seek out Ana, and, as they are both still upset, she does not reach out to him either. After work, Ana goes to visit Ray. She becomes emotional, but does not tell Ray about the pregnancy. When Ana arrives home that evening she is informed that Christian will be working late. When he is still not home later that night, Ana calls him and their conversation is strained. Ana cries herself to sleep, waking at dawn. She sees Christian’s tie on the floor, and knows that he’d been there in the night, watching her sleep. She goes downstairs for breakfast and is told that Christian has already left for the day. Mrs. Jones encourages her to not give up on Christian. Ana goes to work and sees a cold email from Christian, informing her that he will be in Portland for the day. Ana is beside herself with misery. When she sees a call coming in from Mia, she almost does not answer it, not being in the mood for Mia usual chirpiness. Upon answering, however, she is greeted by none other than Jack Hyde.

CHAPTER 22

Jack’s malicious intent becomes imminently clear when he demands five million dollars to be delivered to him within the next two hours. He threatens Mia’s safety, and warns Ana not to tell anyone or alert the authorities, or he will know. Ana is beside herself with panic and fear. She is unsure of how to get a hold of the five million dollars or how to get it to him without alerting anyone else. She scrambles to find the appropriate checkbook, finding Leila’s gun during her search. She tucks the gun into her waistband, just in case, and continues with her mission. She evades Sawyer’s detection until the last second and makes her way to the bank to withdraw the money. Upon arriving, Christian is notified of her intentions. In order to protect Mia, and him, Ana lies and tells Christian that she is leaving him and that’s why she ran off and is taking his money. Christian is heartbroken and tells Ana she can take whatever she pleases. Ana hates hurting Christian, but is convinced it is the only way to save Mia’s life. She leaves the bank through the back door and gets into a vehicle Jack has sent for her. The driver is none other than Elizabeth, from her office. This shocks Ana and she wonders what Jack could have on her to get her to do this for him. Elizabeth refuses to talk to Ana and takes her to see Jack. Upon confronting him, Ana asks about Mia. Jack tells her that he wants his money first. He slaps her and kicks her in her stomach. She immediately covers her abdomen, in an attempt to protect her unborn child form this onslaught. She re Leila’s gun, pulls it out, and shoots Jack Hyde. She aims the gun at Elizabeth’s and then blacks out. Christian appears, seemingly out of nowhere, right before she falls completely unconscious.

CHAPTER 23

Ana awakens in the hospital, hearing Christian’s conversation with the doctor and noting his relief over the stable condition of both her and the baby. She lets the thought carry her back to sleep. She comes in and out of consciousness a few times, each times hearing Christian’s voice. When she finally awakens and is strong enough to converse, she and Christian talk about everything that has transpired. They both realize how much they truly mean to each other, and their love and relief moves them past their previous disputes. Ana has many visitors and she and Christian spend a great deal of time just enjoying each other’s company and reveling in the fact that they will soon be a family of three.

CHAPTER 24

Ana is feeling much better as she eats a hearty breakfast while Christian reads her the paper, including an article about what transpired between her and Jack. Detective Clark shows up to get a statement from Ana about the events of the day in question. Christian is displeased at his interruption, but Ana agrees to answer his questions. The interview doesn’t take long, and the detective leaves fairly soon. Ana is discharged, and Christian makes sure that she is allowed to have intercourse. Before going home, they visit Ray, who is furious with Ana for her “irresponsible behavior”. Ana apologizes profusely, and they leave Ray in better spirits. On the way home, Ana talks to her mother, and Christian reveals that Welch, a key member of his security team, has found a connection between him and Jack Hyde in Detroit. He wouldn’t reveal the information over the phone, and both Ana and Christian wonder at what it might be. They arrive home without ceremony and, in the elevator, the stress of the past few weeks catches up Ana and she collapses in an anxiety ridden nervous breakdown. Christian carries her inside and takes care of her until she feels herself again. After sharing a therapeutic shower, they discuss Jack and Elizabeth’s connection and the motivation behind the initial attacks. Christian reveals to Ana that Hyde had made videos of his personal assistants during intercourse with him and was using the files to blackmail the women. Christian makes Ana some food and makes her get some rest while he works next to her in bed. When she awakens, it is to Christian’s stricken face. She asks what has happened and he tells her that Welch has just left. He reveals that, at one point, he’d actually lived with Jack Hyde. He doesn’t the time, the foster family or Jack, though, and is deeply disturbed by this fact. Ana begs him to call his parents, and he finally does. Grace and Carrick Grey agree to come over and discuss the missing years. It turns into a welcome home party, thanks to Mia inviting Kate, Elliot, and Ethan. They have a wonderful night, and, before retiring for the evening, Christian finally begins to open up to Ana.

CHAPTER 25

Christian goes into detail, explaining his intricate relationship with Elena/Mrs. Lincoln/Mrs. Robinson and how it all began. He talks about his mother and opens up to Ana more than she ever expected he’d be able to. She takes in the information graciously, and they go to sleep in the calm reassurance of their love.

On Monday, Ana endeavors to go to work, but Christian refuses to allow it, citing the doctor’s orders of taking one week off. He does, however, approve of a trip out to the house that Elliot’s team is building according to theirs and Gia’s plans. They discuss their future plans for the house and enjoy a picnic lunch in the nearby meadow. During their alfresco luncheon, Christian receives a few phone calls. One of which is from Welch, informing him that the person who posted Jack Hyde’s bail was Elena’s ex-husband. Christian makes another phone call, sells some stocks, and effectively financially ruins Mr. Lincoln. They make love in the meadow and revel in each other’s embrace.

Christian still refuses to allow Ana to return to work later in the week, and she is becoming aggravated. He begins playing the piano and Ana decides to take the opportunity to push her husband to test her limits, as he’d previously promised. She sends him an email, and he comes to find her. He tells her to go to the playroom and wait like he taught her to when she was training to be his Submissive. She does so, gladly.

EPILOGUE

We are brought forward a few years. Christian and Ana have a two year old son, Ted, and are expecting a daughter soon. Ted’s birth was by emergency C-section, and they relive the fear they felt then when thinking about the impending birth of their daughter. Ana asks Christian if they can name her Ella, after his mother, but he adamantly refuses. Ana relents and they continue about their happy day with their son. They decide on the name Phoebe, and we are also given the news that Kate and Elliot have a had a daughter, Ava.

Character Analysis of 50 Shades Freed

Anastasia Steele- She becomes Christian Grey’s wife; she is described as being “innocent”. She is a transparent, taciturn and reserved/shy/quiet, insecure, yet intelligent, feisty and determined individual.

Christian Grey- He is Anastasia Steele's husband. He is an elusive, yet brilliant self-made billionaire businessman. His cocky, controlling/possessive, and intimidating demeanor only serves to highlight his position of power and authority, though it does not diminish his intelligence and tenacity. Ana is the only woman who could ever “handle” him.

Katherine “Kate” Kavanagh- She is flirtatious and confident, with good looks to back up all of her attitude. She begins a romantic relationship with Christian Grey’s brother, Elliot and they become engaged.

José Rodriguez- He attended WSU with Kate and Ana. His father was the driver in the accident that put Ray in the ICU.

Elliot Grey- Christian’s brother; proposes to Kate Kavanagh.

Jason Taylor “Taylor”- Main bodyguard, yet on a more intimidating scale, as he seems wholly and completely devoted to Grey- and to keeping his secrets.

Jack Hyde- Ana’s former boss; has ties with Christian, is a sadistic sexual predator.

Dr. Grace Trevelyan Grey- Christian's mother is a huge fan of Ana’s and a loving, caring individual.

Mia Grey- Mia, Christian’s little sister, studied advanced culinary techniques from an instructor in Paris. She loves Ana, and is becoming infatuated with Ethan Kavanagh.

Ethan Kavanagh- He is Kate’s brother and is interested in Mia Grey.

Carla Adams- Ana’s mother; She is on her fourth marriage. She provides Ana with encouragement and comfort throughout her ordeals.

Ray Steele- Although he was not her biological father and he and Ana’s mother, Carla, have been divorced for years, Ray is a consistent ive and loving figure in Ana’s life. His accident is a big event in this fourth installment.

Summary of ‘Fifty Shades Darker’

Anastasia is still thinking about her separation from Christian Grey. Three days have ed ever since and she cannot believe that it has only been three days since that happened. She has trouble concentrating on her new job where she is an assistant to Jack Hyde, who continues to try his hand at flirting with her and she keeps on rebuking him. She receives an email correspondence from Christian that startles her since she didn’t know that he had any of her information. He asks her whether she’d like to go to her best friend Jose’s show along with him. Since the show is going to take place in Portland, she accepts the offer for the ride. Christian arrives on time and Anastasia leaves her office to go with him. His actions and words show that he doesn’t want their relation to end and he offers to renegotiate on their way to Portland. At the show, Jose has showcased some single shots of Anastasia, which are later bought by Christian. They leave the show early to eat dinner and as Anastasia suspects, to talk about their future relation.

They end up in a café where they have dinner in a hurry, which is ordered by Christian and Anastasia points out how controlling that gesture is to her. They talk about their last time in the apartment Escala and Anastasia confesses that she had forgotten to say the safe word to stop Christian’s actions, to which Christian states that he cannot trust her further if that’s going to keep on happening. On their way back to Seattle in his car, Christian and Anastasia come to of acceptance according to which they would have a normal relation with no set rules and no punishments for any transgression. They hug and make up. Once the car reaches Anastasia’s apartment, Christian gives her a package. Anastasia opens the package later and comes face to face with an iPod loaded with a playlist by Christian. Additionally, the package contains all of her previous possessions. She thanks Christian later by sending an email.

During Anastasia’s playful email exchange with Christian, he suddenly mentions that her emails are checked by the company server and it would be better if she

worded her emails carefully. This ission scares Anastasia for some time but later she disregards it. Jack Invites Anastasia to where all her coworkers are going to drink. She accepts the offer once she realizes that it is a company affair rather than one involving her with Jack alone. Once outside the building, she comes face to face with a girl that resembles her and questions Anastasia about what is so special about her. Anastasia is left speechless but realizes that it must be related to Christian. Once at the bar, she enjoys the company of her colleagues and when it starts feeling like Jack is cornering her, Christian arrives and takes her home where she makes dinner for the two of them and Christian lets it slip that he has bought the company where Anastasia is working at the moment and this makes Anastasia angry. Later, on her own insistence, Christian and Anastasia make love.

After making love, they feast on the food made by Anastasia and once the time for desserts comes, Anastasia mentions ice cream and Christian converts it all into a dessert that involves Anastasia’s body and ice cream with him licking it off the various crevices of her body. Christian mentions that Anastasia’s boss has his eyes set on her and Anastasia tells him that it isn’t so. However, Christian maintains his stance. Anastasia tells him about her encounter with a girl who vaguely looked just like her and Christian identifies her as Leila and tells Anastasia about her back story, stating that she did love him but got married later. Christian asks Anastasia out for his parents’ charity party. Anastasia worries about her dress and appearance and Christian states that he still has her dresses stowed away in closets at his apartment and tells her that he would take her out for a haircut himself. Later, he does take her out. At the parlor, Anastasia watches Christian talk to an older woman and realizes that it is none other than Mrs. Robinson.

Anastasia leaves in a fit of anger. Christian follows and drags her to his car to take her to his apartment after telling Anastasia that her dwelling place is no longer a safe place. He tells Anastasia the reason behind partnering up with Mrs. Robinson for the business venture and tries to make her understand that she helped him earlier in his career once he dropped out of college. Christian also reveals the amount that he earns per hour to Anastasia’s astonishment, when she complains about his grandiose gestures. Anastasia complains that Mrs. Robinson

was touching him while she can’t touch him and he tells her that it’s because she knows where to and then promises to tell her the areas where she can touch him safely without causing him pain. He later marks the areas with a red lip color for her.

The marking session soon becomes a full grown make out session and on realizing that they are both aroused for each other, they end up trying to satiate their needs by giving in to their desires. As Anastasia takes a shower to get ready for the ball, she realizes that Christian is opening up more now than he ever had. She wears the dress that was chosen for her by a private shopper and falls in love with her look and so does Christian. He requests that she insert a toy in her private part throughout the event as a part of some play he has planned and she complies. At the event, she meets Christian’s family with a familiarity and ends up volunteering for something Mia asks her. She bids for the charity and spends all the money Christian had given her earlier.

Christian gets angry over her bid but he doesn’t get a chance to talk to Anastasia much before the announcement is made for first-dance auctions, the auction she had volunteered for by agreeing with Mia. Once the auction begins for Anastasia, an unknown man starts placing high bids over Anastasia that are countered by Christian. Christian wins when he offers one hundred grand for the bid. He takes Anastasia to his old room in his family home and makes love to Anastasia there. They return just in time for the dance and Anastasia dances with Christian, followed by his father and then Dr. Flynn. Anastasia tries to learn new things about Christian’s past from both these individuals. Mrs. Robinson makes her presence known to Anastasia and tries to have a friendly chat with her.

They return to Escala after watching the firework display. Anastasia changes into Christian’s clothes and sleeps, waking up on feeling uneasy. She thinks that she saw somebody standing over the bed but realizes that it was her imagination and goes to get Christian. On returning to the room, they find the balcony door open and this leads to panic regarding Leila. Amidst panic, the two leave for a hotel in central Seattle where they stay till the threat faces the apartment. Anastasia gets

her birth control shot injected after the doctor enlightens her with the fact that she might have become pregnant due to her ignorance. Christian and Anastasia take a bath together to wash off the lip color lines and Christian finally confesses that he loves Anastasia.

Emotions run high after this confession of love from Christian and further heighten when Christian lets Anastasia touch his body for the sake of cleaning. They make love at the hotel. After this tryst, Christian looks so happy that Anastasia agrees to go out with him for his sake. Christian buys a Saab convertible for her and then they visit the marina where Christian exposes Anastasia to his boat ‘The Grace,’ named after his mother. They go sailing and Christian lets Anastasia steer for a while. When the boat keeper leaves the boat for a while, they take advantage of the time and make love in the main cabin of the boat where Christian confesses that he has never brought a girl there before.

They return from the boat to have dinner at the area where Christian parked his car. They get a call from Taylor, who tells them that the apartment is safe for them now that it has been thoroughly checked. He also informs that Leila came inside through the fire escape. On reaching Escala, Anastasia talks in a friendly way with Taylor that sets Christian off and he later tells her to not act that way again with any of his staff. Christian sees Anastasia deciding her clothes for office the next day and he tells her that she won’t be going. This starts an argument between the two that settles once he agrees that Sawyer, a bodyguard, will go with her to the office. Christian starts giving Anastasia a tour of his apartment where they come upon a pool table and the two start playing a game after setting their bets with Anastasia hoping to go back to the playroom once she wins the game.

However, Anastasia loses the game and Christian gets his way with her on the pool table. Christian tells her that she played well. Anastasia bargains over her bodyguard and agrees that Sawyer can drop her off at the office and pick her from there. Anastasia discovers the next day at office that her boss has a two-day trip to New York planned for the two of them. The trip gets cancelled once

Christian hears about it and orders from his position. Therefore, Jack is only allowed to go alone. Jack, now that he is busy, gets Anastasia to leave the building to get his lunch and Anastasia gets an angry call from Christian once she returns. Mrs. Robinson tries to engage Anastasia again in a meeting and she forwards the message to Christian.

The next morning, for some reason, Mrs. Robinson visits Christian unannounced. This angers Anastasia and she leaves the two friends alone to talk where Mrs. Robinson exposes that she is being blackmailed. She and Christian are overheard by Anastasia when Mrs. Robison tries to talk about Christian’s needs and Christian tells her to back off. Anastasia sleeps in the library and is taken to a room by Christian, where she wakes up in the middle of the night to piano music. Anastasia and Christian make love on top of the piano. The next day after work, Anastasia decides to go visit her best friend’s brother Ethan but to her surprise, she finds an armed Leila in the apartment.

Leila is imive and just watches her with an empty expression, asking her what she doesn’t have that Anastasia has in spades, enough to keep Christian. Christian and Taylor barge into the apartment and Christian asks Anastasia to leave the apartment, which sets off Anastasia since she can detect Christian’s old personality in his eyes with Leila preening for his attention. She leaves the apartment and goes to a bar in front of the apartment with Ethan. The two get drunk and Anastasia returns to Escala late to an angry Christian who becomes submissive once he starts fearing that Anastasia is leaving him.

Anastasia tells him that she needs some time to think things through since she is thoroughly overwhelmed at the moment. She then asks him why he is so scared all the time. Christian tells her then that he is a sadist and specific about his choice of submissive because his mother had the same brown hair. While this has a drenching effect on Anastasia, Christian takes this moment to propose to her. That night, Anastasia leaves the bed for a while to roam around the apartment and hears Christian’s painful shouts. She discovers that he has nightmares when he isn’t sleeping with her. He fears that now that she knows

everything, she would run. At work, Anastasia’s boss bullies Anastasia to her surprise and she cannot understand his behavior. Christian continues to tell her to use her blackberry to talk to him but she doesn’t listen. Mia calls to tell Anastasia about Christian’s birthday party.

The office is empty by the time she is ready to leave and Jack capitalizes on the moment to attack her but due to her stepfather’s training, Anastasia uses selfdefense and runs away from the encounter unharmed. Once she runs out, she meets Christian and Taylor on the way out and both of them run inside to catch Jack. Christian talks to Jack’s immediate superiors to terminate his contract with SIP. Anastasia gets a call from her best friend Kate who tells her that she is returning soon with Christian’s elder brother Elliot. Anastasia wanders around Escala and ends up in the playroom where Christian catches her and she asks him about the function of various toys in that room.

The next day at work, Anastasia discovers that she has been promoted to her boss’s position. She asks Christian constantly if it’s due to his influence and he denies his involvement. Anastasia finally drives her car around for the first time before it is taken away by Christian to drive around. She meets Dr. Flynn to question him about Christian’s problems. After the fateful meeting, Christian and Anastasia leave for some place only known to Christian. Christian ends up taking Anastasia to an isolated mansion where he tells Anastasia that he plans to buy this house for growing his own family. Anastasia falls in love with the place and tells him to buy it as it is, without changing the architecture of the building. They visit one of Christian’s clubs for dinner and Christian asks Anastasia to take off her underwear. He later fingers her on their way down the building in a crowded elevator. They end up making love on the floor in Escala. The next day, the exchange of email messages between the two continues and suddenly, Christian stops answering Anastasia’s mails. She thinks that it is due to her friend Jose’s impending arrival that night but she later discovers that Christian has gone missing along with his chopper Charlie Tango.

The whole family comes to search for Christian and settles at Escala that night.

Anastasia sits grieving that she may never see him again and realizes that she still hasn’t accepted his proposal for marriage. Suddenly the door to the apartment opens and Christian walks in. His whole family engulfs him in a hug. The reason for his disappearance turns out to be a fire in the engines of Charlie Tango, which was a surprising event. Christian gives Anastasia some time alone with Jose who asks Anastasia if she’s happy and serious about Christian. Christian finally gets her to himself. She wishes him on his birthday and asks him to open her present for him. The present turns out to be a tag with ‘yes’ written on it.

Christian is surprised and beyond happy over this revelation. In their happiness, they make love in the shower. The next day, Anastasia gives him the other two presents that she has bought for him. He loves the solar-powered rotor and promises to make good of Anastasia’s gift of wanting her way back in the playroom. Jose leaves that day to meet his father. He and Christian bond over talk about fishing.

Christian and Anastasia visit the playroom where Christian makes good of his promise to Anastasia. They end up making love after much experimenting on Anastasia’s part. Christian calls Anastasia’s father Ray to take his blessings for the marriage and makes Anastasia talk to him. Anastasia also talks to her mother. Her mother worries that Anastasia is pregnant and Anastasia assures her that it is not the case. Anastasia cooks food for Christian along with a chocolate cake for the birthday. After indulging in the meal, they leave for the party at Christian’s parents’ place. At the party, Kate corners Christian and Anastasia before anyone gets to them and shows them the copy of Anastasia’s initial contract with Christian. Once outside, the family starts wishing Christian a happy birthday and it is then that he announces his engagement to the party. This receives a mixed reaction from Mrs. Robinson and Lily, Mia’s friend. Anastasia retires to the washroom where she meets Mrs. Robinson who tells Anastasia that she won’t be able to keep Christian happy. Christian enters the room and tells her to back off. Mrs. Robinson starts telling him the same thing she told Anastasia. At this point, Christian’s mother enters the room, slaps Mrs. Robinson and asks her to leave. Christian’s mother asks
