How had each character affected each other’s self-concept? Teddy was a troubled child. That changed when his teacher, Mrs. Thompson, started to focus on him. He began to do well and became one of the smartest children in his class. Mrs. Thompson provided Teddy with encouragement and appreciation. With that, Teddy started to develop a positive self-concept. He thought that if his teacher can believe in him, then why shouldn’t he believe in himself? He started to think of himself as a good student, and that he could perform well. This results to the improvement of his performance and his personality as a whole. Mrs. Jean Thompson was just like most of the teachers until she met a student named Teddy. Teddy showed Mrs. Thompson that she can make a difference. He made her realize her role as a teacher. Almost all of the letters that Teddy sent her says the she is always Teddy’s favorite teacher. That made her feel special. That made her believe in her ability as an educator. With that being said, she had a better self-concept. Her perception of herself may have changed from “I am a teacher” to “I am a good teacher”.
Describe the characters’ moral reasoning from beginning to the end of the story. Mrs. Thompson’s moral reasoning was at stage two at the beginning of the story. When Teddy was not doing well, she readily crosses out his answers and write F on his paper. She was not concerned about Teddy’s situation. If he gave her a bad
performance, then she will give him a bad score. Teddy’s moral reasoning was also at stage two at the beginning of the story. He didn’t do well and was unpleasant because he wasn’t taught how he should behave. He was acting that way because no one tells him that it is not right, forcing him to believe that there’s nothing wrong with how he acts. Also, he does not consider his relationship with others. By the middle to the end of the story, both their moral reasoning was at stage 6. They were acting based on what they think is right. Not because it’s in the law or it’s their personal interest but because it is right.
What part of the story struck you the most? Why? The story as a whole struck me. It was very inspiring. But if I was to pick one part, I would pick the one where Teddy gave Mrs. Thompson a present. It was his mother’s. Mrs. Thompson didn’t like Teddy at the beginning but I think Teddy liked her a lot to give her a gift that special. The best part was when Mrs. Thompson appreciated the gift and exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was when in fact, it wasn’t. In that moment, not only Mrs. Thompson received a gift, but Teddy as well. Teddy received the gift of appreciation. There are times when we meet people that we don’t like. Maybe because we don’t like their attitude, or they don’t get along with others well. But we should keep in mind that everyone is fighting a battle. They are acting that way because of a reason. It’s a lot easier to be mean than to be nice. Being nice takes work. We should do our
best to make a difference. After all, who knows, we might find our own Teddy Stoddard in this world.
