Last week, Aiken County authorities rounded up 10 drug suspects in Ridge Spring after months of investigative work. In coordination with multiple agencies, the sheriff’s office seized nearly 50 grams of crack cocaine as well as a firearm, drug paraphernalia and cash from two residences. The street value of the crack cocaine is estimated at $2,300. The Aiken County Sheriffs Office will be attempting to seize both residences as a result of the investigations, criminal histories of the occupants and illegal activities that have been ongoing at both of the residences, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Myers It’s clear there is a drug problem in the CSRA, and it only seems to be getting worse. The sheriff’s office, in coordination with the other agencies, are working hard to curb the sale and distribution of marijuana, crack and meth. These days, narcotics officers seem to be dealing with more and more meth cases. And we have to wonder why. Why do people even start using meth? Do they know what the drug does to the body? Do they know how it destroys lives? According to the experts, athletes and students may start using it because of the initial heightened physical and mental performance. Blue-collar and service workers may use the drug to work extra shifts, while young women often begin using methamphetamine to lose weight. Others use meth recreationally to stay ener-

gized at “rave” parties or other social activities. Hard evidence shows us that meth s often become addicted and go on to wreck their lives and the lives of their loved ones. Meth s are easy to spot: they may exhibit anxiousness, nervousness, incessant talking and extreme moodiness and irritability. They may also have repetitious behavior, such as picking at skin or pulling out hair. Their pupils may be dilated with redness on the iris. They may have trouble sleeping. The worst part, they may become aggressive or violent, or they could go the opposite direction and suffer severe depression. Sounds like a drug we want to try. The most effective techniques we have seen in fighting methamphetamine abuse are the pictures of how a person’s face changes over the years. The picture above is of a woman in Arizona who seemed to age 20 years in just seven. We ask again: Why even start? Our best advice: If you haven’t started it, don’t even try it. In the meantime, the drug war wages on. And if you want to test the resolve of the sheriff’s office, we will leave you with the words of Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt: “The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office takes a zero tolerance stance on the use of or selling of illegal narcotics in Aiken County, and as proven in the past, if you are a drug dealer and choose to deal drugs in Aiken County, we will take your drugs, money and your home.”

Aiken authorities charged two parents with neglect on Saturday after they left their 2-month-old baby alone in a minivan for a half hour as the temperature reached the mid-90s, according to a public safety report. Authorities say 32-year-old William Pou and 33-year-old Mandy Fredell left the windows of their minivan down about 7 p.m. Saturday as they shopped for pet shampoo at Super Pets on Whiskey Road. A woman in the parking lot heard a baby crying and observed the child alone in the minivan with the engine off and the windows partially opened. Based on witness statements, the officer charged Pou and Fredell with unlawful neglect by a legal custodian. The officer ed the children’s grandfather, who came to the store and took custody of the children. In addition, the officer called an ambulance and EMS officials to check on the baby’s condition. EMS officials said the baby did not appear to be injured or in need of emergency medical care, a report states. According to weather.com, the temperature in Aiken at that hour on Saturday was recorded as 94 degrees. The temperature “felt like” 98 degrees, the site says.

Wal-mart Customer Shows Bare Buttocks to Child Let’s go to the tape. Aiken Public Safety officials used their own version of “instant replay” to prove a Warrenville man exposed his bare buttocks to a 10-year-old girl last week inside the Aiken Wal-mart, a report states. Charles Seigler told Aiken officers that his three friends had yanked down his pants down as a prank, and that it was an accident that the victim saw his butt. Relying on Wal-mart’s well-placed video

surveillance, Officer C. Cathcart discovered footage that Seigler “appeared to be pulling the back of his shorts down to expose his buttocks,” a report states. None of the three friends were near Seigler or were trying to pull his shorts down, the report states. In fact, the video shows Seigler “pulled his shirt up to above his stomach” to further expose himself, the officer said. The girl’s family told police that they yelled at Seigler when he exposed himself, and he

and a friend became confrontational with them. The girl’s mother screamed for a manager and followed Seigler and his friends into the parking lot until an officer arrived. Seigler was eventually arrested for indecent exposure and booked into the AIken County Jail. Wal-mart officials also put Seigler and one of his friends on tresing notice, telling them not to return to the store.

Reward in North Augusta Burglary A reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for a daytime burglary Monday at 507 Hillcrest Drive in North Augusta. A man kicked in the door and removed several items from within the residence. Two children, ages 10 and 13, were inside the home at the time of the burglary. They hid in a closet while the intruder was inside. Neither of the children were harmed and they were ed with their mother and father shortly after the incident, according to a press release.

The suspect left driving a bluish-green small truck with some type of white graphics design striping down the side of the vehicle, police said. He is described as a white male, 6’01”, heavy-set, short/close-cut hair, in his 20s or 30s, last wearing a gray and white plaid Oxford-type shirt with light colored pants. North Augusta Public Safety officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect or vehicle in question. A Beech Island man picked the wrong time to attempt a robbery last week. Christopher Harmon was attempting to hold up the Circle K on Jefferson Davis Highway at 5 a.m. Friday when a North Augusta public safety officer happened to drive by, a report states. The officer spotted the suspect wearing a gray cloth around his head and face. The would-be robber was also adjusting something in his waist. The officer stop the suspect on Highway 1 and discovered that he had just tried to rob the store before fleeing when he saw the officer pulling up. Officers also found a sawed-off shotgun in his pants.

Augusta Dad to Face Charges in Driver Assault Richmond County authorities said Monday that they planned to file aggravated battery charges against the father who attacked a woman driver after she accidentally struck his 2 year old boy. Lt. Calvin Chew said they were waiting on 24-yearold James Wright to bury his son before arresting him in the June 6 attack. Charges were expected as early as Tuesday (June 15). Wright is accused of pulling 32-year-old Tuowana Staten from her vehicle and punching and kicking her. The attack followed an accident in which Staten hit Wright’s son, 2-year-old James Wright IV. Authorities say the boy darted out in front of Staten’s vehicle to grab a football. Wright reportedly told the

woman, “You just killed my baby, b***h, I’m gonna kill you.” Staten suffered broken bones to her eye socket, leading to the felony charge, according to sheriff’s Lt. Calvin Chew. She also had scrapes, broken nails, loose teeth and swollen cheeks. “It’s emotional, and that is why we are giving the gentleman time to go to his son’s funeral. We don’t think he was looking for someone to beat up His emotions got the better of him.” Lt. Chew said. “Sometimes, you’ve got to wait to see what is occurring before you make a flip decision like that. “In this case, I think he jumped to the conclusion that she was at fault... and he let his emotions get the best him.”

The two Hephzibah teens pictured at left were arrested Saturday after allegedly robbing a neighbor of an XBOX 360 and DVD player. The woman caught them in her home and confronted them. Anderson then put a sawed-off shotgun to the woman’s head, a report states. Recognizing the youths, the victim told them to get the gun out of her face. They fled with the electronics, but deputies later went a few houses down and arrested them.

“Threat” to Fort Gordon Crystal Patterson, 35, was arrested Friday for calling 911 and threatening to “blow up Fort Gordon and to kill all the blacks on it,” according to a sheriff’s report. The suspect allegedly made the call from a pay phone at JC Food Store on Golden Camp Road. That’s where Deputy Bruce Jones found Patterson when the 911 Center dispatched him to the call. Patterson was booked on a charge of terroristic threats and acts. She confessed to the threat, a report states.

Report: Man Raped Girls for 5 Years An Augusta man has been charged with raping two children for as long as five years, according to a sheriff’s report. Willie Goetz, 37, has been charged with two counts of aggravated child molestation. The suspect is familiar with the two children, ages 12 and 10, a report states. The 12-year-old called her mother May 22 and said she had to talk to her. The girl said that Goetz had been raping her and her 10-year-old sister for five years.

The mother then confronted Goetz, who confessed to the molesting the girls and agreed to leave the family house. He also promised “it would never happen again,” a report states. The woman told authorities that she waited to report the crime because she was worried about her children being taken by the Department of Family and Children Services. She also didn’t take the girls to the hospital because they didn’t want to go.

A Richmond County investigator says a double shooting outside a teen party early Sunday may turn into a homicide case if one of the victims does not survive. Xavier Russ was shot in the head and Kwan Jones was shot in the shoulder following an argument outside a teen party at the old BL’s at 11th Street and Laney Walker Boulevard. A juvenile has been charged with aggravated assault and could face murder

charges if Russ does not survive, according to Sgt. Dan Carrier. Jones is OK. After a teen party ended, words were exchanged in the parking lot between the driver of a Buick Skylark and the juvenile suspect. The suspect pulled a 9mm handgun and shot into the car, striking the victims, who were both engers. “Apparently, it was all because someone stepped out in front of somebody’s car,” Sgt. Carrier said.

Dad Shoots Teen in Gang Dispute Willie Perry, of Florida, was charged last month with attempted murder for shooting a teen in retaliation for the shooting of his son. Perry allegedly shot 16-year-old Tyrail Brantley after Brantley and another 16-yearold shot Perry’s 15-year-old son Justin. The suspect had left a violent Pompano Beach gang and became an informant. Police called the shooting of Perry’s son payback. Perry then got payback for the payback. Go figure.

Teen Dad Breaks Baby’s Leg Teenage father Steven Powers was charged last week with assaulting his own 10-week-old baby. Powers, 19, of Indiana, was home alone with his child. When the child’s mother came home she noticed something was wrong with the baby’s leg. A hospital visit revealed leg fracture. Doctors told her it would take a significant amount of force to cause the injury.

Father Locked Son in Room Daily Ronald Halk, 43, was arrested in Florida for allegedly locking his 13year-old son in his bedroom for extended periods of time each day. Police said Halk installed a sliding door and pad locks on the door of his mentally disabled son. Police say Halk would provide food, water and access to a restroom. Halk was charged with false imprisonment, child abuse, and domestic violence.

Dad Busted with Son for Trafficking Pot A Tampa father is accused of involving his 20-year-old son in his marijuana trafficking. Carlos Ceruto, 53, and Carlos Ceruto Jr., were arrested earlier this month for trafficking, manufacturing, and possessing pot worth $940,000 on the street. Detectives seized 75 marijuana plants. The duo used two rooms in their home to grow the plants.

Georgia Dad Brings Gun on School Campus Thomas Smoak, 51, of Athens, allegedly brought a loaded shotgun to Athens High School last month because the school principal had suspended his son. Authorities say the son was suspended for calling another classmate a name that included a racial slur. Receiving a tip from the man’s wife, s locked down the school, and police captured Smoak shortly after he came to the school with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun. The charges: making a terrorist threat and having a gun at school.

” - 2010 NOMINATIONS GROUP OF DADDY DUMMIES Father Leaves Son Alone at Motel Indianapolis father Steven Levoy was arrested June 2 after allegedly leaving his 9-year-old son alone in an unattended hotel room for several hours. A woman said the child came to her room after waking up and realizing his father wasn’t around. She told police it was the second day the boy had been left alone for several hours. Police found the father drunk and learned he left his son behind to get wasted with residents in another room.

Father Drove Drunk with Twin Boys in Car Connecticut dad Timothy Sullivan was busted last month for driving drunk with his 10-year-old twins in the car. Police pulled over the 38-year-old father in Kingsbury, where he was seen driving on the shoulder of the road. Police say his blood alcohol level was 0.19. He was charged with an aggravated DWI with a child under 16. The twins were turned over to mom.

Father Tries to Poison Children Jose Oliva-Rosa, of Wyoming, was arraigned last month for trying to poison his children by making them drink brake fluid from sippy cups. The man’s wife had left him, and he reacted by trying to kill his children and then stab himself. The kids ingested a cocktail of brake fluid, penetrating fluid, ibuprofen and DayQuil. Police found out and broke into his home and rescued the children, and they have since recovered.

Dad Arrested After Toddler Shoots Himself An eastern NC man was charged last month after his 20-month-old son shot himself while playing with his dad’s gun. Timothy Eugene Russell Jr., of Aurelian Springs, was arrested after an investigation into the February incident that injured the boy. He was treated for a gunshot wound to his foot. Authorities said the boy found the gun after the dad left it on top of a washing machine after trying to repair it.

Drunk Dad Falls Asleep on Baby Florida father Jonathan Ponder is accused of ing out drunk on top of his infant son, causing permanent brain, liver and kidney damage. The mother told nurses that the 4 month old had a high fever, but hospital officials called police when the child showed signs of strangulation or smothering. The mother confessed that Ponder was drinking and fell asleep in bed with her and the baby. She woke up to find him laying face down on top of the child while the baby struggled for air.

RICHMOND COUNTY Prank 911 Calls Deputies busted 43-year-old Narvelle Jackson of Hephzibah last week for making prank 911 calls from a pay phone. The 43-year-old suspect was allegedly drunk while calling outside Kelly’s Mini Mart on Washington Road. He first called 911 to report a bogus robbery at Kroger and then a second time for a home invasion on Morgan Road. Deputies caught him fleeing the store lot and matched his voice to the calls, a report states. Charge: Unlawful conduct during a 911 call.

RICHMOND COUNTY N.A. Trio Caught Stealing in Augusta Three young women who appear to live in the Irish Traveler community of North Augusta were busted together for shoplifting in Augusta earlier this month. According to a sheriff’s report, the women were observed placing items into a shopping cart at TJ Maxx on June 2.

When they were done, they put the items into their handbags and tried to leave the store without paying, a report states. The North Augusta women were stopped and held for the sheriff’s office on charges of shoplifting. The suspects include Mary Sherlock, 32, of 1295 Edge-

field Road; Anndrea Riley, 23, of 1303 Edgefield Road, and Sheena O’hara, 25, of 108 Mistletoe Court. Among the items stolen were five shirts worth $42, six pants worth $56, three packs of underwear worth $18 and four pairs of socks worth $16.

Does a Drug Charge Allow Police to Take My Stuff? Q: Can the police keep my car and money following an arrest for a drug charge? A: Generally, property used in the facilitation of a drug crime can be forfeited to the State. This can include money, weapons or automobiles. The most common types of forfeiture actions involve money or automobiles. However, often times the State will seek other items including cell phones, televisions or even houses. The proceeds from forfeitures usually assist law enforcement in the purchase of crime-fighting equipment such as radios and other surveillance equipment. Some interesting facts regarding forfeitures: • An arrest is not always necessary for the State to seek to forfeit property.

• Property cannot be forfeited if it was seized for a violation involving one gram or less of cocaine or four grams or less of marijuana, unless By Rodney Quesenberry the property was used to facilitate the sale or purchase of the drugs. • The court case involving forfeitures is civil in nature and the District Attorney can attempt to call the person facing criminal charges to testify at the trial of the case. This could have devastating consequences for the criminal case when it comes to court.

The statute which governs the forfeiture procedure in Georgia is long and somewhat complex. There are strict time deadlines that, if not complied with, can cause the property to be forfeited by default. COLUMBIA COUNTY Appling Man Charged in Attack on Ex-Girlfriend An Appling man has been charged with a violent assault on his ex-girlfriend in which he allegedly put a pillow over her face and held her against her will, a sheriff’s report states. The victim showed up at an Evans substation Saturday with injuries on her face and neck, dark marks under her left eye, scratches on her forearm and scars on her kneecap. The woman said 29-year-old Jody Johnson had tortured her inside her home on Friday night because he wanted to know if she had slept with

anyone else. She said Johnson threatened to beat an answer out of her. He then slapped her left cheek, pushed her down and placed a pillow over her face as he threatened to kill her, a report states. “He choked her as well, and he threw her to the floor,” a report states. “She begged him to let her call her daughter to say goodbye.” Johnson would not let her leave, according to the report. Eventually, the woman fell asleep and awoke to Johnson leaving in a fit of rage, bust-

ing a front porch light and ordering the woman to “leave the area” because he would hurt her worse if she stayed. Officers noted that the victim had scars that she blamed on previous assaults by Johnson. During her interview with authorities, the victim was crying and visibly shaking, saying she feared for her life. Johnson was later arrested, and he is being held without bond at the Columbia County Jail.

A Week of Pranks in Columbia County Toilet Paper in Trees May Be Funny; It’s Also Criminal, Authorities Say

An Evans woman said someone threw all the pool furniture in the neighborhood pool. In Martinez, vandals used a window marker to draw a smiley face on a woman’s car. And an Evans family woke up to find someone had put toilet paper all over their shrubs, trees and vehicles. It’s been a crazy week in Columbia County, with several bizarre calls that appear to be pranks. But sheriff’s officials issued a warning Monday that harmless pranks can result in criminal charges. “These pranks are rarely done by one person. They’re usually done by a group, and the biggest problem with these pranks is that most young people don’t work through the potential consequences before acting,” said

Capt. Steve Morris with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. “People sometimes chuckle a bit, but when you look at the full scope to include existing dangers and the fact that injuries could occur, it’s an issue that has to be addressed.” Capt. Morris said the individuals involved are usually vulnerable to peer pressure, but he warned that pranksters face potential charges of disorderly conduct, criminal tres or criminal damage to property. Among the reports in the last week: • An Evans woman said someone threw a single egg at her front glass door June 10 on Quinn Drive. • A Martinez woman said someone used a yellow window marker to write on her two cars Sunday night on

Mansfield Place. The vandals wrote “tag” on the Mercedes and a sideways smiley face on an Infiniti. • A Martinez woman living on Colonial Road told authorities that someone entered her front patio June 10 and flipped over her welcome mat. They also went in her back yard and turned over her outdoor dining table. • On Aerie Circle in Evans, a woman reported waking up Saturday and finding toilet paper all over her family’s yard, including on her Nissan Sentra and her son’s Jeep Grand Cherokee. They also discovered a pair of soiled underwear on the mailbox. It was size 16. • On Prince George Avenue in Evans, someone took all the furniture around the neighborhood pool and dumped them into the pool between June 10 and June 11.

Terra Renee Powell is more of a nuisance to law enforcement than a serious threat. The 26-year-old Aiken woman was jailed last week on a drug paraphernalia charge. Nothing serious, right? The problem is that Aiken County authorities are wasting a lot of time on this mischief-maker. Every time Terra gets busted for shoplifting or tresing or disorderly conduct, officers are spending less time fighting the drug war, looking for burglars or patrolling our neighborhoods. And on this last charge, Terra’s must pay a $1,092 fine or sit in jail until the end of the month.
