J is the narrator of the book three men in a boat. He is a funny man. He is a single, young , middle class men living in London much like author himself at the time of the publication of the book the initial j was supposed to stands for Jerome . Jerome is found of history literature and spends time on dreaming the knights to the countryside to England . This day dreaming sometimes became trouble for him when he don't put suitable attention towards what he is doing . J is found of boats but old fashioned Character sketch of Harris Harris is a vain fellow who pretends to be extremely hard working but usually pushes off the burden on other people. He is outspoken and does not hesitate to tell his friends what he thinks about them even if it may not be pleasant. For example he outwardly tells George that his new blazer is utterly revolting and that he must not wear it around them (Harris and J). When Harris takes on a job he makes a huge fuss out of it like the narrator’s uncle Podger. It may not be anything majorly important but if Harris is going to do it.... The world would know about it. He also thinks very highly of himself and his voice though his friends do not want him to even attempt singing. He is extremely fascinated by tombs and graveyards much to J’s dislike. He is also quite short tempered and it is best to let him rant off his anger rather than try and talk to him about it. He wouldn’t mind a drink at any time of the day and enjoys the company of his friends.

Character sketch of George George was a bank clerk (who 'goes to sleep at a bank from ten to four each day, except Saturdays, when they wake him up and put him outside at two ') and was living in a back room of the same house. The landlady suggested that, to save money, the two might share a room. They 'chummed ' together for some years - both shared a love of the theatre -and a life-long friendship was formed. George, who remained a bachelor, rose to become manager of Barclays Bank in the Strand and outlived. Character sketch of Stivvings Stivvings was a boy in the writer's school. He was an extraordinary lad. He was full of unnatural notions about being a credit to his parents and an honour to the school. He used to get ill about twice a week so that he couldn't go to school. He would get diseases throughout the year like bronchitis and hay fever at Christmas, rheumatic fever etc. He would go out in a November fog and come home with a sunstroke. He suffered terribly with toothache, neuralgia, and ear-ache. He was never without a cold and always had chilblain. He would sob in bed because they won't let him do Latin exercises and took his German grammar away from him. UNCLE PODGER A funny character carved out by the author, Uncle Podger is J’s uncle. J believes that the habits of Harris and his uncle are quite similar. Uncle Podger is a messy and forgetful being. Like Harris, Uncle Podger too takes charge of a task only to delegate it to people around him and later blame its failure on them. Uncle Podger engages everyone present in the house to get him things he required to hang a picture on the wall. He asks them to hold the chair, lift the picture, search for his coat etc. Though everybody runs from one

corner to the other and follow his instructions, he still taunts them and shouts at them. Even for nailing a nail in the wall, he would take hours and still mess things up. Thus, his in the book is highly amusing and one of the most memorable one. The description of commotion that he creates in the house in order to get a trivial task done is really funny. 3. Yes, Jerome's habit of reading about different diseases made him suffer a lot. Being confident of his knowledge, he made self-analysis of his symptoms and came to the conclusion that he suffers from all the diseases possible from A to Z. He thinks of ague, Bright's disease, cholera and wonders if he has housemaid's knees, including gout and zymosis. He feels that he is a hospital in himself. Anyone could walk around him and take the diploma.

Jeromy faced a lot of trouble due to this. Due to the strong smell of the cheese there was no one in the carriage he travelled on the train. His friend's wife asked him to take care of the cheese till the return of her husband. Jerome decided to throw the cheese away. first he tries to throw it in a canal( I think so) but the fishermen complain telling that the fishes were running away from the shore.Then he buries it in a grave yard but the keeper complains telling that the corpses would run away he would lose his job. At last he throws it away near the beach. So that's how the cheese became a troble for Jerome. George avoids cheese telling that it leaks gets mixed with other food giving them all the taste of cheese. 7. The line “Get up, you fat-headed chunk!” is referred to George. 11 Harris suggested that camping out in a rainy weather is not pleasant. The others agreed because they realized that in rainy weather everything on the boat becomes wet and damp. It also becomes very difficult to put up a tent in such weather because it gets soaked and becomes heavy. It flops about, tumbles down and clings round the person's head and makes him mad. ________ 12

the two young fellows were students, just returned from , commonplace young men, who seemed restless and uncomfortable, as if they found the proceedings slow. 13 J. volunteers to pack because he wants to boss over George and Harris. He wants to superintend.

George and Harris doesn't show much faith in his ability to pack. Once J. packs and straps the bag, Harris asks if he is not going to put the boots in; it turns out that J. has forgotten them. On this incident, George laughs. When he finishes packing, George asks if he has put the soap in. J. straps the bag without caring about the soap, but he finds that he has packed his tobacco pouch inside it. Owing to all this confusion, rest of the packing is left to George and Harris. 14 15 16 The two students had informed J. that the song sung by Herr Boschen was a comical one. As a result, when Boschen started singing, as J. could not understand a single word of the song, he kept on looking at the expressions of the two students and continued laughing like them. However, the song was actually a sad song. It was about a young girl who had given up her life to save her lover's soul and he had died. Thus, Boschen sang the song seriously. As the two students and J. laughed during his performance, at first he was surprised and gradually his surprise changed into annoyance. He scowled and this made them laugh all the more. Boschen finished his singing amid a perfect shriek of laughter. He got very angry and shook his fists. He said that he had never felt so insulted in his life. 17 Uncle podger firstly says that he 'll take over the simple work of hanging the picture because he thinks he can do everything simply (without making a mess) Its actually the opposite, just to hang a picture the whole family had to help him. One had to get the nails, one had to go back that person to remind him/her the size of nails needed, one had to get the ladder, one had to get the hammer. And finally when everything was bought, ungle podger tried to hang th epicture and it slipped from his had. He tried to arrange the glass of the frame properly and ended up getting a cut on his finger. Then he tries to get the kercheif which was in his coat. Unfortunately his coat was missing then, everyone who had to help him were said to go in search for his coat. Finally he happened to find that he was sitting on it :P He said everyone was worthless as they couldn 't even find one coat which he kept aside minutes ago. After all this mess they all stand semicircle round the table, even while doing this one had to catch the chair, one had to get him the nails, one had to get him the hammer and etc. He finally hung the photo frame by 12 o clock. It took him around 6 hours to complete the work. Yet he was proud thinking he was the only one who could do it in a perfect way
