The Giver Unit: Utopia Brochure Presentation Objective: Students will present their final utopia project to the class and will evaluate one another’s utopias through a vote. Standards: Listening and Speaking- Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.7.4 Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with pertinent descriptions, facts, details, and examples; use appropriate eye , adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.7.5 Include multimedia components and visual displays in presentations to clarify claims and findings and emphasize salient points. Materials & Technology Used: Completed Utopia Brochures; example brochure; project rubrics. Intro/3 Minutes: Allow students time to copy the agenda and out Giver folders. Remind students that they will need both their finished project and their project rubric to turn into me by the end of the period. 7 Minutes: Go over the guidelines for presentations. In their presentations, students must be sure to address the following (these should be listed on the board):    

The name of their utopia The brief description of their utopia 1-2 features of their utopia (ex: education, crime, etc.) How their utopia relates the The Giver’s Community

Model the presentation using the example brochure of the Community. Additionally, model speaking volume, clarity, posture, and eye , asking students to be mindful of these while presenting. Students may also choose to share cover art, maps, or diagrams that they added on their brochures. After students have finished their presentations, students will vote on whether or not they would be convinced to live in that utopian community. If time allows, students may also ask questions about that person’s utopia. 50 Minutes: For the rest of the period, students should take turns presenting their utopias. Before presenting, each student needs to give me their rubric so that I can make comments about their presentation at the bottom. *Students will not be graded on their presentation abilities, but will be given about their performance. I must have all brochures and rubrics by the end of the period.

Utopia Project Directions and Rubric For the final project of our Giver unit, you will be creating and advertising your own utopia. This is not your personal utopia, but one that meets the needs of every citizen of your society. You may choose to either adapt our own society, or create your own utopia from scratch. When you have designed your utopia, you will create a tri-fold brochure to persuade people to visit or live in your utopia. Your brochure should show:     

The name of your Utopian Society and your name An attractive cover that will persuade others to visit your community A map or picture of your community A brief description of what your community has to offer A brief description of how your society handles each of the six elements listed above (either a bullet point list or a few sentences)
