Watershed & Four Water Concept
What is Watershed. ? Watershed is that area from which all precipitation flows to a single stream. Synonyms are “catchment area” and “drainage basin”
What is Four Water Concept • It was developed by Sh. T. Hanumantha Rao • The Four water are, rainwater, soil moisture upto water table level, ground water and surface water. • This technology emphasizes on water spreading techniques to facilitate recharge to ground water, in the upper areas of watershed, through mini percolation tanks instead of the conventional checkdams in main valley.
What is Four Water Concept • Recharge through gully percolation tanks and sunken pits. • Cover crops to prevent soil moisture evaporation. • Methods for keeping open dug well full and tapping this water for irrigation (instead of bore wells in the hard rock areas)
Advantage or Goal of Four Water Concept • In the same cost increase the benefits three times more, and increase the recharge to ground water ten times more than earlier.
Activities involved in Four Water Concept Structures • Mini percolation tank in 1st & 2nd order stream. • Check dams in the 2nd or 3rd order stream with earthen dam at centre and surplus weir on side (no check dam on the main stream and no cement structure in the stream course). • Sunken pits in gullys in 1st and 2nd order streams • MPT’s at head of gullys and up stream of sunken pits and drainage line treatment.
Activities involved in Four Water Concept Structures • CCTs strictly along contour. • Boundary bunds & Contour ploughing. • Diversion drain for recharging open wells. • Subsurface dam at downstream of watershed. • Rubble stone diversion weir on the mainstream for gravity irrigation. • Restoring & de-silting very small ponds.
Activities involved in Four Water Concept Vegetative • Cover Crops in rainfed lands. • Tree plantation on all boundary bunds. • Vegetative cover (agvae) for gully slopes. • Nurseries for fodder, timber, fuel wood & horticulture. • Agro-forestry. • Pasture development.
