I cannot state enough how bad advice it is for someone seriously wanting to learn Linux to install a distribution with a desktop environment (GNOME/KDE) and Xorg installed by default ! It might be rewarding at first. But then they start plugging in USB devices and connect their webcam. They start wondering why all search results and forum posts on ubuntuforums have 3 different commands to run as sudo and essentially can leave your system broken, insecure, or  unstable. People on Windows are used to finding only one or two ways to  solve a problem due to it's GUI nature. This is just not TRUE with  Linux.

In my humble opinion, everything that at first seemed like a good  experience by ing, installing, and exploring a distribution like Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora or any other full­blown Linux distribution can quickly turn into a nightmare for previous Windows/Mac s when they try to get something to work and start to see the commandline mentioned in several  forum posts whether its good or bad advice, they won't be able to tell the difference ! I recommend the following two ways to start: 1.  Install a linux distribution.  Doesn't matter which, you have to make a decision later based on several distribution experiences anyways. In this  way you will become more enlightened on the choices, the strengths and  weaknesses, package­managers, and what this means for you. But to make things easier and less confusion choose a base­distribution (Instead of distro based on something) 2.  Install a distribution without a desktop­environment (GNOME/KDE) and without Xorg. ArchLinux or Debian Netinstall w/ Text­based install  (ArchLinux is recommended because of great documentation and wiki on  every application configuration you need). In this way you will become more familiar with the commandline, the stack of Linux applications and how they add up to a whole package comparable to Windows. Fedora is also possible with a text­install, and so is Debian.

You can try out in a VirtualBox at first, but I recommend to jump in  with both legs and get your hands dirty­ like convince yourself to get  your laptop to work completely with WiFi, Bluetooth, CD­Burner,  Media­Keys in your summer­holiday and surprise your colleagues at work  with running a full­ blown and self­configured Linux. Aside from general Linux tutorials, it's also always good to do research before and after installing Linux on a specific machine.   For example "[distro version] [hardware name]" will often get you a full optimization guide, i.e. "ubuntu 10.04 acer aspire one" gives good post­installation guides.   Starter tutorials for Linux in general will save you hours on basic things, like fonts, drivers, etc; Post­install guides tend to cover some of that, plus complex things, like the best kernel boot options, disk parameters, etc. Written Jun 23, 2012 • View Upvotes Upvote
