Prologue

Many times, I have been told that I should write a book about my life because I was different, unique, or profound. I had the highest grades in grade school and high school, and I drove myself to the first grade in the family car at six years old. My mother and father had a relationship that was not harmonious, as did the mothers and fathers of my friends. That set my objective to earn a PhD in relationship psychology. When World War II started, I also wanted to serve my country. A Unique Man’s Journey through Life is the story of how I accomplished all of that in spite of not having enough money and having medical problems. When I was told that was impossible, I did not listen, and I never had any doubt. I thought if I doubt myself, how could I get anyone else to believe me? I also helped many other people solve their problems to achieve what they wanted. I found the appreciation they had, and their thanks certainly were some of the greatest joys in my life. As my dad would say, “I appreciate their appreciation.” I was proud to serve in the US Air Force. However, I feel obligated to write President Donald J. Trump (see page 131) to prevent any other Air Force officer from being subjected to the problems I had in the Air Force. Looking back, after writing this book, I am really surprised at how ethics controlled so many of my decisions. Grantland Rice wrote and I believe, “For when the one great scorer comes to write against your name, he writes—not that you won or lost—but how you played the game.” What matters is how I played the game, meaning my ethics (moral principles), and how I treated others. For that I believe, I scored very high. Also, I scored high on the Aggie Code of Honor, “An Aggie does not lie, cheat, or steal or associate with those who do.” Further, I am writing this book for the readers to learn from all my experiences in life both in business and personal relationships. Early in life, I realized that continued success in either depended on me having the right personal principles. If someone doubts this, I challenge them to be dishonest and then be successful

in either personal relationships or business relationships! I learned a lot throughout my life from my experiences that include my accomplishments, both in business and personal relationships. I always tried to be a positive person, but sometimes, life or God tests you, and it is hard to be positive. Then I turned to the “Desiderata,” which is on page 130. Also, I would like all my loved ones to be proud of me, not only from all my accomplishments in life but also for what I have contributed to their lives. When I met someone in life that I could help, I never ed that opportunity to help them even if it was just to make them laugh like I did with the dour waitress on the latter part of this book. My PhD studies in relationship psychology gave me the ability to help many, and it is hard to describe how much happiness I received from their sincere and deep appreciation. Sometimes, my unique solutions even surprised me, but I was always very careful to inform them I was not a doctor or lawyer. The most important reason for writing this book was that after I served in the US Air Force. I needed a way to get important information directly to the president of the United States because that level would be aware of the highest level of classification, including President Eisenhower’s orders at the time I served. That information is under the heading below, which starts on page 44 and ends on page 64. This certainly created an urgency to complete this book called A Unique Man’s Journey through Life. For that reason, I will not cover my life in the additional detail I

had planned, and I will delete some of my personal philosophy and business philosophy, except I want to add one aspect of business philosophy.

Highlights of My Life

When I was six years old and starting first grade, I drove my father’s car to first grade with pillows under and behind me and with my father sitting in the enger seat. My father had taught me to drive when I asked him to, and I think that started me to “think out of the box” for the rest of my life. In grade school, I was the only one with a driver’s license. The principal would give me the keys to his car so I could round trip papers to the superintendent from the principal that was some distance away. At the age of fourteen, the same boy did US Code Title 26 Form 1040 income taxes. An eighteen-year-old girl helped the fourteen-year-boy lose his virginity. The boy, now a man and sixteen years old, did not have money for Texas A&M from all the five jobs he worked: pushing 400# ice blocks into railroad refrigerator cars, preparing Form 1040 income taxes, selling scout equipment at JC Penny’s, restaurant cashier, and special delivery for US post office. My 98.5 percent high school average caused the USAF to offer Texas A&M payments if I take two four-year courses simultaneously—one in electrical engineering and one military course to become a USAF officer and then serve two years, all of which I accepted. For me, life has always been a wonderful and beautiful experience to live because I mostly understood the principles of human sexuality early and lived my life developing bonds of trust, love, and care in both my personal life and my business life. Who am I if I cannot give and receive trust, love, and care, and, of course, the love of God? Also, honesty to myself, and to and from others, is very important to me. In many ways, I believe each of us is defined by the principles we believe in, and those are my principles. Eagle Scout is the highest achievement attainable in the Boy Scouts of America, and only 4 percent attain it, so I stopped at “Eagle Scout minus two inches.” (I

was two inches short on the broad jump, and the scoutmaster wanted to give it to me, and I said, “No,” because I didn’t earn it.) I loved learning, so I learned at every opportunity presented to me. I was pushed ahead three grades in grade school and one grade in high school. I think everyone in high school knew I would be valedictorian. Being younger was good until I went out for football and was blocking a lineman that was eighteen, and I was fourteen. He was leaving footprints on my back every down, so I left football and went back to academics. The National Guard organized Dalhart High School into three platoons, and I was selected as a platoon commander. When I was a Junior at A&M, I checked and found out that I had sufficient academic credits to qualify for my Aggie ring, so I obtained my Aggie ring. I showed it to my roommate, and he almost panicked and hurriedly closed our door, telling me to hide the ring because not a single senior in our squadron had an Aggie ring. I kept it hidden until I graduated. When I accepted the promotion from general electric to become an executive at Waynesboro, Virginia, I became curious to know if any of the other fourteen that was hired by GE in my Texas A&M class of 1949 were executives, and the answer was I was the only executive out of the fourteen, so I felt good at my progress in GE. One of my achievements in life that I was proud of because I applied it in both my business and personal relationships is when I obtained both a degree in electrical engineering and PhD in relationship psychology at the same time. The former allowed me to become a professional electrical engineer E9053 in the state of California and transferable to any other USAstate, which provided me a reliable source of income. On the other hand, the PhD in relationship psychology provided me the knowledge to develop excellent personal relationships and excellent business relationships. My objective of a PhD in relationship psychology required that I read and understand sexuality studies like the twentyone lectures of Sigmund Freud in Vienna, The Kinsey Reports on male and female sexual behavior, and Masters and Johnson’s Human Sexual Response and Human Sexual Inadequacy. This unique combination of knowledge was vital to my success. I obtained a master’s degree in professional business management, ed the certified public ants exam for a A, ed the California Series Seven

broker’s exam (this was for my understanding of investing), obtained a computer science degree, obtained a general engineering contractor’s license, and a professional engineers license in California transferrable to all USA states. I had continued study at five different universities to further my education with many psychology courses, and I was sixteen hours from my PhD in relationship psychology at UCLA. I observed that when I added another educational field, it improved my judgment in the other educational fields.

Warning to the Reader

Please read: Some people will insist that I should not include “sex” or “personal story” in this book. For those that want to avoid reading the “sex” or “personal story” that is graphic, I have provided a {SX} at the start of the paragraph, meaning “do not read!” Human sexuality is defined as the bonds between individuals expressed through profound feelings of trust, love, and care. For me, life has always been a wonderful and beautiful experience to live because I understood the principles of human sexuality early, and I lived my life developing bonds of trust, love, and care in both my personal life and my business life. Who am I if I cannot give and receive trust, love, care, and, of course, the love of God?

I made a test that had a religious close male friend that I really respect read some of my books, and he said I should delete all my personal experiences, which I partly did. However, my belief is “my life,” to be complete, should include all my important experiences in life. Certainly, it should include my relationships that provided so much love and happiness in my life and solved problems in the life of others. The sexuality knowledge from my PhD studies in relationships certainly helped me to help others with their relationship problems, which often involved sexuality. For US Air Force security classified or privacy, I used pen names. I believe everyone has the right to choose their religion. However, my mother chose her Baptist church in Dalhart, Texas, for me. That church, like most churches, repeated and emphasized, “The Bible is the Word of God,” which I always believed; however, that Baptist church, like so many churches, then had the audacity to think it had the power to change the “Word of God.” I found it difficult to find a church that believed “the Bible is the Word of God” without exception, which is my belief.I believe the Bible loses a lot of its meaning if we allow churches or individuals to change the “Word of God.”

Part One

The Early Years at Dalhart, Texas

I came from a poor family, and I mean poor. When you looked up poor in the dictionary, there was a picture of my family.

Dad

My dad was a major influence in my life because of his honesty and ability to overcome unfortunate circumstances, which he taught me directly and by example. I always accepted my dad’s advice but never accepted my mother’s advice. After my dad had a hard day at work, he came home and would sit in his favorite chair and read the newspaper. Invariably, my mother would pull her chair up to talk directly into his ear. Dad would continue to read until Mom said, “Sloan, you are not listening to me.” And Dad would look up and repeat her last sentence, which frustrated Mom. I asked Mom why she kept doing that, and my mom repeated her motto, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease,” to justify her constant complaints to my dad. My dad was tall for his age, and his father took him out of school in the third grade to work on the farm. When his father horsewhipped him (I saw the scars on his back), he ran away. He and his older brother lied that he was eighteen so he could the Army. When he came out of the Army, he went to Amarillo, Texas, to work and was dating my mother during the week and dating a woman from Texas Tech University that came up to see him during the weekend. He worked at Swift & Company as a salesman to grocers and sold lots of hams until Swift & Company introduced the ham. My dad knew that the ham was the same ham as before but only had a new package on the outside. My dad would tell the grocers not to buy the ham because it was the same as the old ham but more expensive. The word got back to Swift and Company, and they told Dad to stop saying that, or they would fire him. My dad thought this was dishonest. He didn’t stop, so they fired him. Then he got a job as a truck driver between Amarillo and Dalhart, Texas. Dad liked the people in Dalhart, so he moved there and bought a house. I started school there in the first grade. Our garage at the back had a separate storage room that was about four feet wide and fifteen feet long with a door. I cleaned out that space of everything except Dad’s Army locker, which had a lot of letters from the Texas Tech lady. I went into the kitchen, where Dad was drinking coffee and Mom was doing dishes. I told Dad that I had the storage room all cleaned out except his Army locker with all the letters. My mom said, “What

letters?” My dad jumped up and said, “I’ll take care of it.” (I had read a number of the letters in the trunk that were from the Texas Tech lady that made me wonder why he married my mom when he had such a great relationship with the Texas Tech lady. The letters made it look like he was going to marry her.) With the tools I had, I built a workbench and bolted a vise to the workbench. I made a hammock below the workbench for me to sleep or rest. I made a toolbox and hung it up on the wall to store all the tools. When I was six years old and starting first grade, I drove my father’s car to first grade with pillows under and behind me and with my father sitting in the enger seat. My dad liked that I was a precocious kid. So at five years old, when I wanted to learn how to drive the family’s Ford, he taught me. I think that started me to “think out of the box” for the rest of my life. After WWII started, the Army Air Force put a glider school at Dalhart that had an estimated two thousand personnel on the base. At that time, there were three insurance agencies, and Dad saw an opportunity and opened an insurance agency. I was put to work, cleaning up his office and the display window that faced Main Street. I laugh at myself now, when I was fourteen years old, for looking up and down Main Street through the display window to avoid anyone from high school seeing me with mop and bucket cleaning Dad’s office floors. It did not take long before the Army air base personnel recognized that Dad was honest about whether it was better to keep their government insurance or buy new insurance. The other three insurance agencies would always tell them they needed to buy new insurance because they wanted to sell more insurance. Before long, there was only Dad and one other agency left, and the one left was having trouble. As I grew up, Dad gave me educational toys like a jigsaw puzzle, where each of the states was a piece of the puzzle. I really liked the Erector Set, where I could build things using nuts and bolts and electric (low voltage DC) motors. (I built a lot of things that worked electrically.) Also, he showed me tools in the Sears and Roebuck catalog, and I picked out an actual tool for my birthday, Christmas, or any other gift. I think this might have been because Dad could only get a hammer to hit a nail about 25 percent of the time. Yet he could fix a clock with

all the tiny gears. Dalhart people came to Dad and said, “I need some insurance.” When Dad asked questions, they would say, “Just tell me what I need, and I will come back and pay for it.” I did not miss this lesson in life from my dad that “honesty is best,” and that was also reinforced by the Boy Scouts and the Aggie Code of Honor. I was always honest in both my business life and in my personal life, and I believe that is why I was so successful in both. In business, when I negotiated a contract, I never negotiated for a one-sided contract (even when I could). I would negotiate based on mutual agreement that each of us agreed. In my personal life, I always negotiated mutual agreements that both of us agreed to. Even when I could pull the wool over someone’s eyes in business or personal, I did not do that. I wanted to end up with a friend that knew I was fair, and they could trust me and know that I would not take advantage of them. I cannot who said something like this, but I have tried to live my life so that when I go meet God, who is the “Master Referee up in the sky that scores against my name,” it will not matter whether I won or lost the game of life. What matters is how I played the game, meaning my ethics, and how I treated others. My dad educated himself in every way he could, and many in Dalhart thought he was a college graduate. Later, he was elected as justice of the peace. Dad told me on the very day that I was twenty-one that he made me executor of his will. When he ed away and I became executor, I saw all his papers in his desk, and it appeared that Mom had become pregnant, and he married her so that I would not be listed as a bastard on my birth certificate, which was the legal practice at that time. My dad was a major influence in my life because of his honesty and ability to overcome unfortunate circumstances, which he taught me directly and by example. Sunday school was not the only place I had teacher difficulties. In English, I had all As when reports on documentaries were assigned. But when fiction books were assigned, I refused to read fiction, because as I told the teacher, I only wanted to get true things in my brain. When fiction reports were assigned, I did reports on different documentaries. The English teacher said I needed to do fiction because it taught me how to write, and I said documentaries did the same thing. She said she would fail me in English unless I read fiction, but I kept reading documentaries and reporting on those instead of fiction. I still received an A in English, probably because she knew I had straight As in all my other

subjects. In my life, I seemed to have an innate question about what the best way was to live my life. When I had a chance to increase my knowledge about a subject, I usually accepted it because I visualized knowledge as an island in my life. When I increased my island of knowledge, it increased my shoreline of wonder and curiosity that seemed to be my driving force forward to learn at every opportunity that was presented to me. Maybe that started when my dad gave me a nickel for each E for excellent I made starting in the first grade.

Mom

My mom loved sweets, and the refrigerator always had icebox cookies, upsidedown cake, and pecan pie. My mom and I were frequent guests at the refrigerator. I tried very hard to find an understanding of those that should be close to me like my mother and father. One of the most difficult problems was that I saw such beauty in the love relationship between a man and woman (also shown by my father) that created a new human being, and my mom saw such ugly in the love relationship. Looking through my engineering eyes, I marveled at how God echoed this almost magnetic attraction in creation over and over in the animal world. When I was five years old, I did not have it all altogether. My mom used a screen door latch to keep me in. I would get the broom to push the latch open, but it took me a while to learn that if I dropped the broom and ran out, my mom would hear the broom making a noise when it fell and come and get me. When I was older, I found the twelve-year-old girl next door was more fun. I had bottles that contained, for example, vinegar and baking soda that I was trying to mix together and get it to explode. She would take one of my bottles and run. I would chase after her, and when I caught her, she would grab me and wrap herself all around me, causing both of us to fall on the ground because at twelve years old, she was larger than I was at five years old. One time, I fell on a 2×4 with a nail in it that went through my wrist. I decided this was time to find my mom, who was next door at the twelve-year-old girl’s house. Her older sister came to the door and saw me holding up my left arm with a 2×4 hanging down that was nailed through my wrist with the nail coming out the other side of my wrist. She screamed, which caused my mom to appear and take me to the doctor. My mother insisted that I go to her Baptist Church Sunday School and Church in Dalhart, Texas. Since my mother only went to church on Easter Sunday, she arranged with our neighbor lady to take me. At ten years old, I had bad hay fever with copious fluid draining from my nose

and eyes, but still, my dad insisted that I mow the lawn and clear the weeds every week. I started looking everywhere for something that would stop the fluid that was draining. I was looking for a filter, but I did not know that word then. I tried handkerchiefs over my nose and mouth, both dry and wet, but no results. I tried other things that didn’t work, so I kept looking and finally found an ideal filter. It had gauze wrapped over layers of cotton and was just the right size, and it worked great. The neighbor lady always came over on Saturday when I was mowing the lawn to ask if I was going to church. This time, after she asked me, I said yes. She immediately went direct to my mom, who came rushing out to me, ripped my filter off, and said, “Don’t you ever, ever get in my Kotex box again.” I pleaded that I would hide it under a handkerchief but to no avail. I thought it was wrong that my mother would not let me hide my filter that worked so perfectly. Also, I wonder why someone that saw this did not think that someday I would become an engineer. My mom’s Baptist Church Sunday school teacher in Dalhart, Texas, assigned us homework, the Ten Commandments in Exodus 21, which I had already read several times. Instead, I read the entire Book of Exodus, and I found Exodus 21 verse 10, which said, “If he takes him another wife, her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.” I questioned the Sunday school teacher about this, and she told me that the New Testament deleted that. I asked her, “Where in the New Testament?” She said that she would tell me next Sunday. My Grandmother had given me a Bible with a concordance, and this proved that the New Testament did not delete Exodus 21 verse 10. I also looked up the word “wife” and found that Exodus 21, verse 10, was still in the Bible. Either one of these proved the Sunday school teacher was lying, and both said she lied two times. I thought it was wrong for her to lie, so I made sure I was first at Sunday school every Sunday after that so that as soon as she entered, I could say, “Last Sunday, you said you would tell me this Sunday where the ‘If he takes him another wife, her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish’ that was deleted in the New Testament,” and the Sunday school teacher would have to lie again with “I’ll tell you next Sunday” or some variation of that. She had to lie so many times that I am sure everyone in the Sunday school class knew she was lying. I wondered if she thought lying was acceptable to God and Jesus.

When I did leave at 16 years old to enroll in Texas A&M, it gave me great happiness; however, I would not be surprised if my leaving did not make My Baptist Sunday School Teacher even happier than I was. When I was twelve years old, I did not know the word hypocrite, but I knew that something was wrong with Mom’s Baptist Church when it repeatably emphasized the Bible is the “Word of God,” and then a teacher in the church lied about what the Bible said. I still believe the Bible is the “Word of God,” and I believe Jesus is the Son of God. I wonder what Jesus and God would think of a Sunday school teacher that lies. Exodus chapter 20 is one of the few (if not only) places where it says that God spoke, and God gave Moses a large number of commandments, not just ten. That makes all the commandments, including Exodus 21 verse 10, “If he takes him another wife, her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish,” as important as any of the other Ten Commandments. Most churches, including Mom’s Baptist Church in Dalhart, try to ignore this commandment, which means that a man may live with more than one woman (helper as God said), but he must treat them equally. I also realized that I would have to resign from the Baptist Church because I did not want to be part of a church that lied. I believe the Bible loses a lot of its meaning if we allow churches or individuals to change the “Word of God.” After my brother ed away, I learned from my brother’s wife that my brother had seen my dad trying to hold my mother and express his feelings for her with his arms around her, and she was doing everything to push him away. He just gave up and slid down to the floor with his arms still around her, and the next day, he killed himself. I believe I was with Lockheed at the time. When I told my manager at GE, he immediately said for me to fly to my remaining family and stay as long as I needed, and I would be at full pay for as long as I needed. I went home. I questioned my mom over and over, trying to understand why my dad killed himself. Finally, she itted that she had told my dad that I was ashamed of him. This was at a time when GE was being falsely accused of causing the Electra aircraft to crash, and I was overloaded defending GE, which caused me to stop writing home for a short period. She knew and itted that it was an absolute lie. I know it had a great effect on my dad because he was so proud of me. She made it appear that I thought he was a failure. After that, I

never had any doubt that my mother’s lie destroyed my father. A doctor in Dallas diagnosed my mother as a hypochondriac, and I certainly agreed with that. Also, my mother’s judgment was terribly impaired by her mistaken religious beliefs, such as sexual relations should not be enjoyed or even talked about but were only for the purpose of having children. I decided that I would not ever date a woman that was even remotely like my mother. My dad had a normal sexuality that he tried to teach my mother, but my mother’s beliefs deprived both of them of the sexual benefits, affection, and other positive effects of their relationship.

High School

In high school, boys and girls started developing their attitudes about sex and love. At fourteen years old, I lost my virginity to an eighteen-year-old lady. I was pushed ahead four grades, so all the high school boys were four years older. I talked to them, and they were proud of the number of different girls they had sex with and would exchange who was “putting out.” I decided that if I had sex with a lady that I had responsibilities to keep it confidential and to respect her. Also, honesty to myself and to and from others is very important to me. In many ways, I believe each of us is defined by the principles we believe in, and those are my principles along with the Aggie Code of Honor. {SX} When I was 14 years old, an eighteen-year-old lady transferred to my high school. All the high school boys, including me, were asking her for dates, but I won out. She was my girlfriend and my first love relationship. I really learned a lot from her, including how to lose my virginity on the back seat of my dad’s car. {SX} My mother told me not to date her because she was too old for me. My dad gave me a box of condoms, told me how to use them, and since I had my driver’s license, let me use the family car for dates. I double-dated with a friend in the back seat with his date. I found something interesting when I found a place to park that was nice and private. I started kissing and touching my girlfriend in the front seat, who started with soft moans increasing in volume and intensity until the moans were clearly having an effect on the girl in the back seat who started soft moans increasing in volume and intensity until it was only the girl in the back seat that was moaning. {SX} My girlfriend was listening to the girl in the back seat that was moaning, and I could see it was having an effect on her, so I had seconds on the front seat. After that, everybody was in a very happy mood. I learned more about the psychological fact that a lady could become sexually excited by listening to the moans of another lady. My knowledge of moans was understood as a scientific fact that was used later in my PhD studies to solve a serious physiological problem. Looking back, I was learning about the psychology of human male and female sexual behavior. When it was later published, I studied Kinsey Reports on Human Male and Female Sexual

Behavior but still continued my own studies. My eighteen-year-old lady had good logic, but I realized that when she became mad or emotional, her logic degenerated. I wondered if my logic did the same, and I devised a way to test it, and I found out that emotion also degenerated my logic. This led me to think that the brain could operate in a logic mode or an emotional mode, but if both were combined, the emotions would degenerate the logic. (I wondered if the converse was true. Could logic degenerate the emotions? And it took me eight more years to determine that the converse was also true.) I wanted to learn everything about how to develop a good relationship with my girlfriend, and psychology and sexuality were very important and helpful. My girlfriend amazed me because she could read lips with accuracy across even a large room. When she was young, she had mastoiditis and had been taught to read lips. While trying to understand how to develop a good relationship with my girlfriend, I would take her places where boys and girls or men and women were talking to each other in places where they thought no one could hear them, and she would tell me their conversations. (I had both of us agree that neither of us revealed anything we heard from her lipreading.) We both learned a lot about both relationships and sexuality problems, which really helped us improve our relationship. We were surprised at how many relationships were not harmonious. It also made me realize that for all my personal life and for my entire career or business life, good relationship principles at every level would be extremely important for success and happiness. {SX} My study of the listings under “Warning to the Reader” on page 7 certainly advanced my sexuality knowledge, which improved my relationship skills. Knowing this, we can get some clarity about relationships. There are good or bad relationships that can have good or bad sex with good or bad sexuality. The ideal is a good relationship that has good sex and good sexuality. With my new understanding of the importance of relationships and sexuality, I decided I wanted to become a psychoanalyst to develop good relationship principles that would also provide a harmonious marriage and reduce the 60 percent divorce rate. Then I found out that psychoanalysis required two PhDs and sixteen years of education, and I did not have the money for four years of education—change of plans!

I think my coach got the message when he told me I ran off the field much faster than I ran on the field! In my math class, the teacher put algebra proof on the blackboard, and I told her it was wrong. She said the proof was correct, and I got up and put my proof on the blackboard next to hers. (I had not read How to Win Friends and Influence People at that time.) She kicked me out of class. She came in the next day and apologized to me before the whole class. She pointed to my proof that was still on the blackboard and said I was right, and the students should correct their notes. I needed two math courses that were not taught at Dalhart High School in order to be itted to Texas A&M. My Aunt Ruby lived in Amarillo, Texas, so I stayed with her during the summer and took one math course in Amarillo summer school. I went to the superintendent of schools at Dalhart for the other math course, and he said I needed ten students to take the math course and a math teacher that would teach it without pay. I went back to the teacher that kicked me out of math class, and she was very nice and agreed to teach it without pay, and later, I was able to be itted to Texas A&M. I learned a financial lesson when at the beginning of the course, I went to the other nine students, asking if they would contribute an amount that they all had agreed to for me to buy a gift for the teacher at the end of the course. I did not collect the amount then, which was my mistake since, at the end of the course, only two paid, and seven had excuses and never paid, and I had to pay for them. The district attorney in our county resigned to become a private attorney doing income tax preparation. He went to my high school and asked who was making good grades in math. He was given my name and was told that I had a 100 percent grade in math classes. When he found I was fourteen years old, he went to my father and said he wanted to hire me and teach me to do Form 1040 income taxes, but it had to be kept secret that a fourteen-year-old boy was doing the Form 1040s for him. My father and I agreed. I learned how to prepare Form 1040 taxes, and I also learned a lot from reading the US Code Title 26, which is

the Internal Revenue Service tax law. This sparked an interest in me to understand the law, and the Attorney was really patient when he answered my questions about Title 26 along with other basic questions about the law. Years later, I was audited four times by the IRS. Two of those audits resulted in no changes, and the other two audits resulted in refunds to me. My reading of US Title 26 was a great help. I learned other lessons when I was working for JC Penny’s, selling Boy Scout equipment. I waited on adults buying their sons’ Boy Scout equipment, and since I was junior assistant scoutmaster, I guided them to the proper equipment for their scout. I first tested how many would return an extra dime I gave them for change. It was nine out of ten who returned the dime. I then tested to see if the amount would make any difference, and I tested to see how many would return an extra dollar I gave them. I stopped testing after I lost three dollars on the next three tests. I also asked the men salesman how to size shoes, suits, shirts, hats, and other things and learned how to sell everything in the men’s department. I sold a number of things to men, which gave me confidence. I did well until I went to the women’s department, saw a lady walking in, and I said, “May I help you?” She said, “I want a ladies’ dicky.” In retrospect, I am sure I looked very embarrassed when I said, “I will get you a lady salesperson.” The National Guard organized Dalhart High School into three platoons, and I was selected as commander.

Boy Scouts

I ed the Boy Scouts and decided to become an Eagle Scout, which set forth a group of challenges. I progressed through Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, and Life Scout and qualified for the twenty-one merit badges I needed. I had to a swimming test, but Dalhart did not have any swimming pool. I finally found a rancher’s square cow tank, fifteen feet on each of four sides that had the coldest water I had ever seen. (Dalhart had a reputation as the coldest place in Texas.) The Scoutmaster watched me shivering while I ed the swimming test. Later, he witnessed my broad jump, which was two inches short. I tried several more times but was still 2 inches short. The scoutmaster said he would give it to me, and I said, “No, I did not earn it,” so I became an Eagle Scout minus 2 inches. Eagle Scout is the highest achievement attainable in the Boy Scouts of America, and only 4 percent attain it, so I stopped at Eagle Scout minus 2 inches. The scoutmaster made me junior assistant scoutmaster and later taught me to be a scoutmaster to replace him. I collected dues, planned the camping trips, found sponsors, and made the reports to the regional scoutmaster, up until I left to at Texas A&M.

Aunt Mae

{SX} My Aunt Mae knew my mom hated the word “sex,” so Aunt Mae told me my first sex joke about the olden days when dating, and their transportation was a wagon pulled by a horse. When this one man found a private place to stop, he tried to lay his girlfriend on the front seat board (twelve inches wide), and she kept slipping off, so he asked her if she would lie on the ground even though it rained the night before. She lay down on the ground, and he got on top of her, going back and forth, asking, “Is it in?” She said, “No, it’s in the mud.” He said, “Take it out of the mud and put it in.” She did and said, “It’s in now.” And he started back and forth, several times then stopped, and he said, “Put it back in the mud!” As soon as I entered Texas A&M, my Aunt Mae in Amarillo told me to stop and see her on my way to and from A&M. She had some really nice surprises for me. (A&M was 500 miles from Amarillo, Texas, and I hitchhiked both ways to save money.) So every time I went home, I would spend a night with Aunt Mae, both coming and going. (Mom never knew this, and Dad and I never told her.) My Aunt Mae was a wonderful lady and taught me a lot. She made friends with all the girls in her neighborhood that were over the age of consent. She would have a party for all of us to get to know each other. {SX} Then, Aunt Mae would take me aside and tell me more about each one, and we would decide together which one should stay. I was amazed at how much she knew about each one. But I really liked a woman I shall call B. I started seeing her every time I was at Aunt Mae’s. B had a high libido and was very intelligent and still a virgin. I made sure we were both satisfied each time I saw her, and I was careful to avoid taking her virginity. However, she wanted me to take her virginity. I told her she needed to keep it because someday, she might meet a man that wanted to marry a virgin. The next time I saw her, she told me that now I could go inside her

because she went out with a man and got rid of her virginity. That surprised me, but I realized she knew what she wanted. We started a love relationship where I saw her every time I saw Aunt Mae going and coming for the four years I was at Texas A&M. Later, she became a really good ed nurse, living in Houston, Texas, where she would call me in California, and we met in Las Vegas every time she called except one. We kept seeing each other, and we had a beautiful love relationship that lasted a total of thirty-nine years.

Part Two

College Years at Texas A&M, College Station, Texas

I wanted to go to Texas A&M, but the savings from my twelve-hour/day sevenday/week job pushing 400# blocks of ice into railroad refrigerator cars was not enough. (I did learn how to break my little toe when I saw a 400# block of ice headed for the back knees of a Mexican coworker, and I diverted it from the back of his legs and across my toe.) At the same time, I earned money working in a café as cashier, at the post office as special delivery, preparing Form 1040 income taxes, selling scout equipment at JC Penny’s, and any other jobs I could find, but it was still not enough money to enter Texas A&M. My money problem for Texas A&M was solved by my 98.5 percent high school average that rescued me when the US Air Force offered me substantial Air Force help if I would graduate as an electrical engineer in four years while simultaneously taking a four-year course to become a US Air Force officer and then serve two years after I graduated. I accepted their offer, and my dad borrowed as much money as he could for my expenses. I entered Texas A&M in 1945, the year World War II ended. I was sixteen years old, which was the minimum age accepted. At this time, I faced two new problems. Number 1, The Texas A&M registrar, Mr. H. L. Heaton, really liked my 98.5 percent high school average but said, “Texas A&M had not graduated anyone from Dalhart High School in the last fifteen years.” I looking Mr. Heaton straight in the eyes, saying, “You are looking at the first one!” (It turned out that I was right.) Number 2, Electrical engineering was the most difficult course at Texas A&M and graduated only fifteen out of every one hundred. My response to this was to study late into the night and only leave this all-male campus (at that time) once a month. It is hard to explain how difficult this was for a very healthy boy/man from sixteen to twenty years old, but I will try. I would study, for example, symmetrical components in electrical engineering, read a line, close my eyes, and explain what I read to get it into my brain.

However, I was amazed at how fast a three-letter word could monopolize my brain. To explain it in Mach, which is aircraft speed, if symmetrical components were “Mach 2,” then the three-letter word “sex” would be “Mach 200.” (When sex was winning every time, the only thing I could do was to find a private place and do something I know my mother would have certainly been against—to be truthful, without that something I did, I would never have graduated.) Texas A&M asked me if I would like them to measure my intelligence quotient (IQ), and I said yes. They measured it and said my IQ was 142; however, they said it was higher than 142 because their norms included the returning veterans from WWII. I was happy to hear that because the genius level was over 140, and my IQ was higher than 142. The cadet colonel made me an intelligence officer for Air Force squadron A, and the genius IQ was probably the reason why. After some time, he said, “Hi. You have a great personality, but you need to expose it a lot more.” I told him that I was taking electrical engineering, where only fifteen out of a hundred graduated, and I had “late lights” for every night because I only had the money for four years of tuition. (We had to have “late lights” approval for lights in our room after 9:00 p.m.) The cadet colonel was surprised but said he understood my situation. When I was home for Christmas my senior year, my dad had surgery for a ruptured appendix and almost died. I stayed with him even though I missed all my final exam reviews and returned just in time to take the final exams. I failed one of my mechanical engineering exams, which would cause me to fail the course, and I would not graduate. I appealed to the professor, who did not like me because I got a laugh from the class when we had midterm exams. The professor’s routine was to announce each student’s name, exam grade, highest grade first, while the student came to the professor’s desk to retrieve his exam. During the professor’s exam review, I had gone to sleep twice. When my roommate started to wake me up the second time, the professor stopped him and said, “Let him sleep since he wants to fail the exam.” The whole class ed this, and when the professor first named me with the highest grade, the class started laughing. The professor then asked me how I made a 98 on the exam, and I said, “I would have made a 100 if I had been allowed to finish sleeping that extra ten minutes.” The class laughed louder. That was a dumb comment that caused me to have to meet with the mechanical engineering dean, who ordered the professor to give me a makeup exam, which the professor did. However, the professor gave me a problem that could not be solved, so I derived

and provided proof that the problem could not be solved so he could not fail me. If he failed me, it would have meant I would not have graduated. When I enrolled at Texas A&M, I became an Aggie, and an Aggie does not lie, cheat, steal, or associate with those who do. So I could no longer associate with my mom’s Baptist Church since the Baptist Church had lied to me.

Part Three

Accomplishments

General Electric

I graduated at twenty years old and was offered a great position with General Electric, where most of the electrical engineers wanted to work. Because so many engineers were graduating in 1949, GE only left thirteen offers at Texas A&M that was the second-largest engineering school in the USA. But I was not one of the thirteen. I kept asking other Aggies if they knew anyone that worked at General Electric. One Aggie gave me the telephone number of a girl in Houston whose father worked for General Electric. At that time, Texas A&M was an all-male university but had a bus that brought girls from Houston to a Saturday night dance on the A&M campus. I called her up and got a date with her and gave her all the information about the bus, and she came up to the dance. On the second date, I hitchhiked to Houston and met her father. Her father asked me what course I was taking, and I told him I had just graduated in electrical engineering. I also told him I really wanted to work for GE, so I had interviewed with General Electric, but there were only thirteen offers at A&M, and I was not one of them. I asked him if there was someone at GE that I could write and get a reconsideration. He gave me the name and address of a person in Schenectady, New York, that was the manager of all hiring in the USA. Also, he said he would help. I completed a letter asking reconsideration and took it to my English instructor at A&M and asked for his advice. I mailed my letter requesting a reconsideration of an offer from GE. Two weeks later, I had an offer from GE as a test engineer. Most of the electrical engineers wanted to work at GE. My dad and I were ecstatic. My mom’s reaction was I should take a local job offer at 20 percent of GE pay. Mom’s send-off words when I left for GE were “Just wait and someday when I die, you will regret that you did not spend this time with me.” I did not want to think this way, but it seemed that almost everything I needed or wanted, my mom was against, and my dad approved. At last, I thought I could relax because I had a very good income since GE paid the highest. Relaxation was short-lived when I realized that GE, by the higher

pay, hired the best students from the best universities, so the competition was much greater in GE. I was one of several engineers that were selected to test J-47 jet engines for the Air Force. In a meeting, the supervisor posed a question to all of us. All the groups were immediately using a formula they ed, and all were giving the same answer. Here I have to explain that at Texas A&M, I had a problem ing formulas, but I was very analytical, so my “work-around” was first to derive the formula and then calculate. When I finished, I went to the blackboard and put my derivation of the formula and my calculation. Everyone could see their mistake when they saw my derivation, and I am sure that I impressed the supervisor because I received a promotion and a pay increase after that. At General Electric, when I wanted to advance to the next level of management, I always evaluated the immediate problems that my advancement created for management, i.e., my replacement. So I always had my replacement ready. I would train my replacement by having him make the current decisions. I had chosen Smokey (nickname) for my replacement, and I was having him make the decisions, and we would review the results together. He made a decision that caused a $10,000 expense and was unhappy when he found out that I knew that would happen, and I did not previously warn him. I told him that was a training expense, and if I had warned him before, he would not that situation without the expense, and the next situation could well be a $100,000 expense. Later, I had an interesting situation at General Electric after they trained me as a sales engineer. They told me I was the youngest sales engineer GE had ever sent out. I said I needed to understand if we are in agreement on one situation. I had observed that, infrequently, GE has a product that is not working up to expectations. If I had a customer that wants to buy that product, I would tell them that I would not sell them that product until it is redesigned so it would meet expectations. Was this acceptable to GE? The person I was speaking with referred me to his manager, and his manager referred me to the top sales manager for all General Electric. When I went into the top sales manager’s office, he did not smile and gruffly said, “I understand you do not want to sell all the GE products. Is that right?” I said, “Not exactly. That would only apply if the product did not meet expectations. When I have a customer, I have to earn that customer’s trust. So I

will tell him that the product does not meet expectations and needs to be redesigned. I will not sell him that product until it does meets expectations. If he has to have the product immediately, he should buy elsewhere, but if he can wait, I will find out when the redesign will be complete.” The top sales manager looked at me and said in a friendly voice, “I hope all our sales engineers think like you.” I chose each of my GE experiences as a test engineer by selecting one of the 144 GE factories in the USA that were close to a nearby university where I could work and also continue my PhD study in relationship psychology. In eleven years, I was in seven different university cities where I worked and studied on my PhD in relationship psychology. I sent my transcripts to UCLA, where I am now sixteen-credit hours from a PhD in relationship psychology. I talked to a counselor at UCLA who said I had all the knowledge courses for the PhD, but I just needed to pay for the minimum semesters since I transferred courses into UCLA from other universities. In one of the stories below, I thanked the Boy Scouts. I want to thank them again for teaching me all the different knots. One time I was with a lieutenant colonel on his boat going to Catalina, and about halfway, there was a stranded boat with four people asking for a tow. He ignored their plea and was ing them. I said, “They are stranded, and there are no other boats around. Why don’t you give them a tow?” He itted he did not know how to tie the rope to tow them. I said, “I will tie the towrope.” So he turned around, and I tied the towrope to his boat with two half hitches, and we towed them to Catalina. (Thanks for knots in the Boy Scouts.) Before that, I had been to the head (bathroom) on the boat, and I smelled gasoline. I asked him what it was, and he said it was a leak (which I already knew). I said, “I am going to look at the leak.” I went to the engine and saw the leak dropping from one of the engine gasoline copper pipes. Fortunately, there was a partly used tube of Permatex. I went to his wife, and she had some aluminum foil. I had the lieutenant colonel stop the engine, and I cleaned all around the leak and put the rest of the tube of Permatex on the aluminum foil and wrapped it around the leak. I went back to him and said that the leak is in a closed area, and with two or three ounces of gasoline and a spark, it could blow the boat apart. I said, “You must get a professional to fix the leak as quickly as possible because what I did

is very temporary.” About two months later, he asked if I wanted to go to Catalina again. I asked if he had fixed the leak, and he said what I did fixed it. I told him he needed to get a professional to fix it, and I said, “I am not able to go to Catalina, but thanks for asking.” During the time I was in Corpus Christi. President Eisenhower authorized Falcon Dam, and I obtained an order for GE for the large hydro turbines in Falcon Dam on the Rio Grande between the USA and Mexico. Also, GE had not had an order from Swift & Company for thirty years. I obtained the first order for a large amount of switchgear for a building addition for Swift and Company’s Corpus Christi plant. I hoped these two large orders would allow the GE regional manager to excuse me from wearing a hat and not playing golf (his stated requirements that I did not follow). I did my best at GE, was promoted a number of times, and I was the youngest sales engineer ever assigned. Shortly after that, I won the prestigious sales diamond derby award for obtaining the large order from Swift & Company that was GE’s first order in thirty years. {SX} Immediately, after I first started work with GE, I had a long period where I could get a lot of the dating experience that I did not have at Texas A&M because I had to study full-time in order to graduate when taking two four-year courses. I soon noticed that when I called a lady that I had dated before for a date on, for example, Saturday night, her reply could be, “Sorry, but I have an appointment on Saturday. How about Friday?” If I said that Friday was not good for me and if I had given her orgasm on the last date, she would say that she would cancel her appointment and see me on Saturday (some man was going to get stood up or canceled). I saw this a number of times, but I could never get their reasons from any lady until I had a serious long-term relationship with a lady, and I kept insisting on an answer. I found out that there was no way she (or probably any other woman) would ever it she made the decision based on sex because it might make her look like a slut or feel like a slut, and she wanted to avoid either in every way. I have a deep respect for women, and I try to completely understand their feelings, so I stopped asking those questions. I was proud of myself for understanding a woman’s important hidden psychology feelings, and I still always consider the hidden importance of

that orgasm, and I still make sure she has one, if appropriate. I have to it I was surprised at how many married women I met that would indicate approval for sex or when they gave me their telephone number, would say, “If a man answers, hang up.” I always refused and stayed with singles because the sixty-something percent divorce rate shows marriages are difficult, and I do not want to be one who caused a divorce.

US Air Force—Wright-Patterson Air Force Base

At this point, the Air Force ordered me to report for duty. GE filed deferment papers for two years and won on the basis that I was more important for the defense industry in GE than the Air Force. That happened three times, and this third time, I told GE that I would not even have education without the Air Force, so I would not sign any more deferment papers, and I wanted to serve my two years now. I was happy GE accepted my decision, and I reported for assignment at Lackland AFB, Texas, along with three thousand other ROTC officers. The commanding general at Lackland AFB told three thousand of us second lieutenants, “We will give you three choices to select which Air Force base you want to serve. I know most of you are engineers but do not waste any of your choices on Wright-Patterson AFB, where the aircraft are designed, because even if you were Einstein right now, you would not be sent to Wright-Patterson AFB.” I thought there must be some way I can get to Wright-Patterson AFB. I talked to the proper personnel at Lackland AFB, asking how to be sent to WrightPatterson AFB and followed their advice. In addition, when I filled out my résumé, I included my jet engine testing and the time I ran into a jet engine test cell to keep a multimillion dollar jet engine from exploding. (GE really appreciated it, but I lost all my hearing over 3000 Hz.) I also included my troubleshooting of jet engine test cells and my experience on gun turret controls for Air Force bombers, and I made Wright-Patterson AFB my three choices. I was sent to Wright-Patterson AFB at Dayton, Ohio. When I arrived in Dayton, I immediately met with the manager of the GE office in Dayton and showed him my résumé. He called the proper people at WrightPatterson, including Colonel Diefenderfer, and sent my résumé to him. After reading my résumé, Colonel Diefenderfer had asked me if I want to be assigned to the equipment lab. I immediately said yes. After that, Colonel Diefenderfer asked me to immediately go to Wright-Patterson. At Wright-Patterson, I reported to Colonel Diefenderfer, saluted, and we talked. Then he called in the master sergeant that he assigned to me, and all of us talked. When the colonel left, the master sergeant immediately asked, “Lieutenant, how

did you get your commission?” I knew that ROTC had a bad name with master sergeants. So I looked him straight in the eyes and said very slowly, “R…O…T…C, but from Texas A&M,” and that made a big difference. In the Air Force, after six months, Colonel Diefenderfer called me in his office and gave me orders that I would be responsible for the design of all the new aircraft electrical systems and also for the design modifications of all the flying aircraft systems. I was twenty-five years old at the time. When I walked out of his office, I knew the electrical system was a flight-safety item, and I immediately realized that if I made a design mistake, I could kill hundreds of Air Force personnel if it failed when installed on the first type of aircraft and even thousands when installed on additional types of aircraft. Bus drivers, commercial pilots, and doctors can kill people but not in such earth-shattering and momentous numbers. This was foremost in my mind for every minute of the time I served. This was the first time that my decisions could cause life or death for so many people. I rethought and realized that I did not overstate my responsibilities. So this thought caused an immediate change of direction from my office to the restroom. After arriving at the restroom, not knowing which end it was going to come out to reduce the stress, I thought this out, I had worked with and I knew that Colonel Diefenderfer was an intelligent senior pilot, an excellent engineer, and was one of the best officers I ever met in the Air Force, along with General Al Boyd, commandant at Wright-Patterson Air Force base and whom I had been with in a number of meetings. That gave me the confidence I was selected for this position. So they must have believed I could do the job, and I believed so too. My restroom visit was ended. After about six months, my master sergeant asked me if I would him for a drink with his after-work barroom friends. I said, “Of course,” and he introduced me to everyone in the bar as the “best officer in the Air Force.” I was really complimented since he had over thirty years in the Air Force. Then he selected a table for us that was in a private area. We sat down with our drinks, and he said he did not have his own children but had a niece that was like his child and came to see him all the time she was not in school. He said she was coming up in a few days for a visit, and he knew her hormones were getting high, and some man was going to get her virginity, and he wanted that man to be me. When he told me about his niece, I really, really felt complimented! I thanked him and told him to call me when she is with him.

Duty at Standardization Meetings in New York City

Part of my new duties was to regularly attend standardization meetings in New York City, which had forty people from selected industrial companies. One time, my flight was late for forty-five minutes. I was really surprised that they had waited for me to start the meeting. When I walked in, the leader of the standardization group said the group had been talking about me while they were waiting on me, and they realized that I was the only one in the group that was single. I said, “I thought if being single was good enough for my father, it was good enough for me.” And everybody laughed. I was impressed they would wait to start the meeting, but then I realized they needed my approval and signature since I was representing the United States Air Force. Procedures for Multimillion Procurements at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Where New Aircraft Were Designed Close to Dayton, Ohio, Where Wright Brothers Had Bicycle Shop and Designed and Flew the First Airplane

Wright-Patterson was organized with both civil service and the military. The top management levels were rotated between them. New aircraft procurements were made from a number of aircraft companies, and the new electrical systems were mostly multimillion dollar procurements from a number of electrical system companies. The procedure for a new aircraft was the chief engineer of the aircraft company would first select the electrical system, and then it would come to me in the equipment lab for Air Force approval. If I disapproved that selection, then I would select the electrical system, and it would go back to the

chief engineer for his approval. If there was no agreement between us, the chief engineer and I would meet with the Wright-Patterson AFB Commanding General Al Boyd, and his staff and General Al Boyd would make the decision. For an example of this process, I would call the chief engineer, “Ernie.” Ernie and I disagreed on the electrical system. We had the meeting with General Al Boyd and his staff in a locked classified room that was for discussing classified information. Ernie was first to speak and emphasized that the heavy weight of the electrical system I recommended would reduce the ceiling altitude of their fighter aircraft, including its ability to attack the enemy’s aircraft from a much higher altitude. He concluded that this greater combat advantage certainly justified the selection of his new lighter weight design of the electrical system. His request lasted almost an hour. After he finished, I spoke for less than two minutes and said, “I agree with everything that Mr. [Ernie’s last name] said, except his conclusion, which does not consider the logistics problem. The system I recommend is already stored all over the world at the [classified number] of US Air Force bases. Without good logistics, this fighter aircraft cannot get off the ground, so there has to be a balance between logistics by considering how much weight the system I recommend reduces the ceiling altitude.” I loudly said, “The fighter’s ceiling altitude in thousands of feet is [classified],” while I held my hands one over the other by three feet. I then said, “These three feet is how much the ceiling altitude is reduced by the system I selected.” This produced immediate sounds of a surprise since the decision was so obvious. The commanding general shot a question at Ernie, “Is that true?” And Ernie said, “Yes, sir.” The commanding general immediately ended the meeting, unlocked the doors, saying, “This meeting is over.” Everyone there knew his decision. I took Ernie to lunch, and on the way, Ernie said, “You got me in deep sh——t.” I told Ernie, “I did not put you there. You put yourself there.” Ernie was still one of my seventeen unsolicited job offers (one from every company I had worked with that I received when my Air Force tour was

completed). The only person I knew that had a combat promotion from master sergeant to major asked to be my friend. In another one of these meetings with the commanding general, I was insisting on the best electrical system for another fighter aircraft, and a member of the commanding general’s staff had that same goal, and after the meeting, he approached me, asking to be a friend. He had the only combat promotion from master sergeant to major that I had ever heard of, and that was because of what he did when flying wingman to a general in WWII. He would not tell me what he did, but others verified the combat promotion, yet they did not know either. I was privileged to know him and fly with him on his plane, which he let me fly. In my opinion, that kind of dedicated patriot only comes along once in a generation. Another privilege I had was working with the finest mechanical engineer I have ever known. He was one of the engineers that came to the US from ’s Peenemünde, along with Dr. Wernher von Braun that headed up USA Rocket Technology after World War II was over. When I finished the electrical system design, I would give the mechanical engineer the information for the mechanical design. He and I became close friends in spite of his mischievous ability to reverse engineer the information I gave him for the mechanical design to get classified information that he technically should not have because he did not have a security clearance. He would then ask me to go to a proper locked room for discussing classified information and tell me the classified information. I would scold him and tell him, “Dr. [last name], I did not want or ask for that information.” We would both laugh and go on with our business. He never revealed any classified information, and he would help me protect it. (The first time this happened, I reported it to the proper authority. The response was “Did you want to do the mechanical design too?” I said no. And the reply was “Then you need him to do it.”) He then did all my mechanical designs. Later, I was happy to see him finish his time period with the government, become a US citizen, get a job with a great corporation, and contribute to our free enterprise system. I really missed working with him, and that is a very sincere statement. I was living at an apartment near the base where a ed nurse that was a

major lived. We became friends, and she was friends with someone in the Eighth Air Force in Europe, and the Eighth Air Force would fly her over and back. She told me that I could fly with her. I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to see Europe for a year. I asked Colonel Diefenderfer if I could take off six months or a year and transfer to the Eighth Air Force in . Colonel Diefenderfer smiled at me and said, “You do not realize the priority of the position you are in. There is only one higher priority position in the entire government, and that is in the Atomic Energy Commission, and I don’t think you would want to transfer into that because for the rest of your life, you could not leave the United States without permission from the Atomic Energy Commission.” I was surprised I had such a high priority position. However, further evidence ed that because when my replacement arrived. I was to train him. His qualification was that he was first in his class in electrical engineering at MIT. He really was impressive, and he was seventh of all the electrical engineering students that had ever graduated from MIT. I saw how careful they were on qualifications for the position I had, and I felt honored to have been chosen. I trained the MIT graduate. He and I became close friends during our Air Force duty. He invited me to have dinner with him and his wife on several occasions, which I enjoyed. Since I needed to train him to replace me after my tour of duty, our friendship made that easier. My PhD study of relationship psychology helped me build those friendship relationships at both General Electric and in the Air Force. A very sad moment happened for the MIT graduate when his wonderful wife had to have her leg amputated at the knee. He asked me if I could go with him to take her home from the hospital. I said certainly I would, and I told him to take off whatever time he needed. Also, I asked if I could go buy whatever supplies Bill and Helen would need while she was recovering. Aircraft design can present some interesting situations. I was critical of the miniature bathroom design in the C-45 aircraft until I understood the circumstances. During World War II, thousands of C-45 aircraft were the workhorse aircraft for transporting cargo and troops. It was designed with benches that would fold down on each side of the fuselage for troops and fold up for cargo. The men troops on the benches had a single relief funnel in the middle of the fuselage that drained out of the aircraft, and one other relief funnel was for the cockpit (an excellent design at the time it was designed).

Later, the WAF (Women’s Air Force) was created, and the WAFs were transported, along with the men on the C-45. I heard the story in detail confirmed by several different men that flew with the WAFs. On long flights, the only way the WAF ladies had to relieve themselves was by the relief funnel in the middle of the fuselage. The WAF lady would go to the funnel and request or plead with the men to turn their heads and close their eyes, and the men would all obediently follow. The WAF lady would then pull up her skirt, remove her panties, sit, stand, kneel, or lay with legs apart, trying to find a good way to use the relief funnel that was designed for a man. The men all seemed to know the exact time to turn their heads around and open their eyes to see everything. The aircraft design personnel had tremendous pressure at that time to immediately redesign a bathroom into the cramped fuselage, and that miniature bathroom was the only choice. However, men will be men. (I know. I am one, but I will not say whether I would have looked or not.) But I was disappointed that some man did not come forward and recognize that each one of those WAF ladies volunteered to help the war effort, and each deserved respect instead of being embarrassed when flying on the C-45 aircraft, and that man should have caused regulations to be created that until the miniature bathroom was installed. Punishments would be enforced so the men would not look. Another situation I found was an aircraft crew that was on an aircraft that had a DC electrical system and had kept requisitioning a plug (meaning receptacle) that had 60 cycles but did not give enough information for it to be designed, so there was repeated returns and requests for more information. I looked at all those, and I phoned the requesting source, and after pushing hard, I finally got them to it that it was for a household 60-cycle AC coffee maker they would plug in. The reason for the coffee maker was they were on an aircraft that had long flights, and they wanted to brew coffee instead of using many thermos bottles they had to hand carry onto the aircraft, and still, they would run out of coffee. I knew that a DC to AC static inverter with proper 60-cycle output would solve the problem, but that was not the best and certainly not the safest answer. First, I wanted to get the idea of a 60-cycle plug, meaning receptacle out of their heads, so I asked, “On your long flights, have you ever had turbulent conditions?” and the reply was “Often.” I said, “Think what would happen if I give you your 60-cycle plug and you had the coffee maker sitting somewhere with hot coffee and crew are standing next to it, drinking coffee when you hit turbulent conditions?” The coffee maker would spill hot coffee on them, causing bad burns. They said they never thought of that. I told them, “It will take

a little design time, but I will provide a design for a coffee maker and place it in inventory so that all your type aircraft can have a safe coffee maker installed that cannot spill and only dispenses one cup of hot coffee at a time which reduces the spill hazards.” They were truly exuberant with thanks. I issued the paperwork to get a safe coffee maker for them that was designed for a DC electrical system and placed in inventory, which I did. They were extremely appreciative. In my position in the USAF, I had no choice but to be involved in multimillion dollar procurements. I knew that kind of money could cause a lot of trouble, and I knew some people would inevitably find out that I had a strong influence on where that money was spent. I knew that I had to be very careful because multimillion dollars procurements can influence someone to do a lot of wrong things. I realized I needed to avoid even the appearance of wrongdoing, so I needed a clear understanding of how equipment lab and procurement fit together in that picture. I introduced myself to procurement, and when I started asking more direct questions, they started to close down. So I started asking if I was doing something wrong? At this point, I had a volunteer that later became the procurement manager. He told me that they were afraid I came from one of the AF organizations that was inspecting if they were operating properly or not. At this point, one of them told me that the GE sales engineer had asked a question that they told him they would not answer. He told them that it was all right that he would just get the answer from Lt. Sloan. When I heard that, I phoned the GE manager and the GE sales engineer and told both of them that they should clearly understand that when I worked for GE, I worked only for GE. When I worked for the Air Force, I worked only for the Air Force as I am now. I told them that they better apologize and withdraw that remark that was made to the Air Force, or I will create serious problems for both of them. Further, they should make absolutely certain that remark was fully and completely retracted and that it was fully understood by the Air Force. After that information got back to procurement, then procurement opened up totally to me, and I learned what I needed to know. On each bid, I had to qualify each electrical system manufacturer, and this affected their selection, so I had considerable influence on who obtained the contract. I knew that my rule “To avoid even the appearance of wrongdoing” would be tested, but I did not know how. It did not take long to find out, and it came in an unusual way. I was at an Air Force party where contractors were not

invited, yet there was one contractor that was there almost every time. One time, when the beer ran out, I offered to go pick up a keg of beer. As I was leaving, this one contractor caught up with me and said he would help me. At the bar waiting for a new keg of beer, we were talking, and he showed me a picture of his wife in a bathing suit, and I complimented her looks. Time went on, and the Air Force parties went on, but before I went to the next party, I found out what company that Air Force contractor worked for. He was a sales manager for one of the electrical system manufacturers, and I found out which one. I was curious because he seemed to have influence because he was always at the parties, and there were no other contractors ever present. The picture cleared when he sought me out at one of the future parties and showed me pictures of his wife in a very skimpy bikini. I said, “Nice.” He said, “She wants to see the three-day air show coming up, and I can’t take her. Could you show her around for three days? I will reimburse all your expenses.” I replied that I had a lady coming to the air show from Texas, and would he take care of her for the three days of the air show? That reply seemed to surprise him, but I hoped that he got the point and would drop the matter. However, that was very naive on my part. I checked and found out that the way he made his offer, it would have been legal for me to accept, and it would not have been a bribe, so he certainly had planned that offer carefully. Some time went by, and I had an unusual request. I was ordered to meet with a Russian general and answer questions but not reveal any classified information. I was there for electrical systems. Others were there for radar, engines, etc. The Russian general was not allowed on Wright-Patterson AFB, so we had to meet him at the large local hotel. I understood this was to improve relationships with the Russians and was at President Eisenhower’s request. At that time, I was rewriting the MIL-G-6099 electrical system specifications to remove the B-36 bomber that was no longer used and to include new fighter and bomber specifications, which also included the change from DC electrical systems to AC electrical systems. This DC to AC was quite a project within itself, and a contract was placed with MIT for engineering analysis of transfer coefficients so that the AC generator, regulator,

and control could be purchased independently from any manufacturer. I had a number of informative meetings with the dean of electrical engineering at MIT, Alex Kusko, because time was a factor that forced a decision. We became friends, and I saw him after the contract was closed when he came to California. Because time did run out, I made the decision that the AC generator, regulator, and control had to be purchased, and qualification tested as a complete system. I also invited engineering comments from anywhere in the world to consider for the revision of the MIL-G-6099 specification. I was really amazed at how many nations were using this specification and amazed at the number of comments that were provided. My time with the Russian general was really stressful because he was very informed on the current technology and was asking technical questions that if I gave complete answers, would reveal classified information by reverse engineering. It was extremely exhausting to prevent that. When I finished with him, I went to the hotel lobby and found a quiet corner where I sat in a chair and just wanted to relax from the high stress before I drove home. I was relaxing, and suddenly I realized that the sales manager from the Air Force parties was there with his wife, and she was in a circle skirt. I got up to give my chair to her, and she pushed me back in the chair, pulled up her circle skirt all around, and said she would sit on my lap. I was almost positive that she had nothing else on under the circle skirt. She rearranged herself and started doing everything to get me excited under her circle skirt, and she was careful to conceal what she was doing. Her husband helped by blocking the view of her movements from others in the hotel while her husband was talking in my ear, saying they had a room in the hotel, and we should go up there. She was truly beautiful, and I was beginning to wonder if I was running out of “nos” like the dry-cleaning lady had said Most Men would do. I had to make a decision on how to stop this without creating a spectacle, and that took a minute or so to decide that I had to stand up and carefully hold her, so she did not fall. I eased her off my lap, saying, “I have to leave,” which I did and then left. I truly wondered about how the sales manager even knew that I would be at the hotel at that time. He certainly must have had some very high connections. I was

more and more amazed at what money or power can do. There is something that I knew all this time that no one else knew. I tried to put the best designed electrical system on each aircraft, and sometime earlier, there was one important aircraft that needed a somewhat different system. I had visited all the manufacturers, and fortunately, there was one that was very close to the needed design. I asked the chief engineer if he had the complete and full authority to change the design. When he said yes, I told him the design change, and he confirmed that he could and would do that (end of the conversation, and I made sure our conversation was private and was classified). This would be the next aircraft electrical system to be procured, and I am sure the sales manager was really surprised when he received the contract, and I am sure he did not know about my conversation with his chief engineer. I think I can figure out what might have happened. It happened that the sales manager had not received a contract for a long time, and his management issued an edict, “Get a contract or you are gone.” The sales manager had a very high salary that he and his wife did not want to lose, so they reacted with a plan that involved me. I knew the sales manager was not just happy but extremely happy to receive the contract. I was pleased that I had developed a good relationship with procurement, and they accepted my disposition form (DFs) and followed them like orders from the top. I took great delight in working with them to develop both procurement and engineering improvements and changes that reduced the flying air force fatalities, yet reduced the cost. I had some experiences later after I finished my USAF service, and I was back representing GE and asking for some contract change from procurement. They would read me a DF I had previously sent them that covered the situation and then ask me if I knew who signed that DF. I would say there was some guy named Sloan that wrote a lot of DFs like that, and everybody would laugh. Then we would work out something that met the DF and was acceptable to all. I was ever conscious that my younger brother would graduate from Texas A&M and become an Air Force flying officer and could be flying the same aircraft I had put the electrical system on, and if that electrical system failed, it could kill him. I was right since when I checked, he logged many hours on each of three of the aircraft for which I designed the electrical systems. There were certainly a large number of new aircraft procurements during the

time period I served in the US Air Force because President Eisenhower was building up the military and Air Force particularly. I checked all the aircraft where I had designed the electrical system when I was in the Air Force and found there were no failures, and it made me feel great. However, there was one situation that was the most serious malfunction in the Air Force that I could imagine. It took me a long time to figure out the way I could avoid revealing any classified information yet explain the situation so that someone in the office of the president would have enough information to completely piece together the president of the United States circumstances, including President Eisenhower’s orders. I feel certain the president of the United States will institute changes, so this will never happen again, which is why I included it. I have always been very proud of having served in the US Air Force, and I do not want this happening to another USAF officer. It started when I was notified that one of our bombers was having a four-engineout condition, and I asked for a description of all the electrical system problems and for all the aircraft conditions under which it occurred. I immediately ordered an altitude test chamber set up in the equipment lab with an identical electrical system that was on the bomber and started testing at all the aircraft conditions where the electrical system was having its problems. I insisted on taking readings around the clock myself, and I had three enlisted men take readings and had them check that I recorded their readings and my readings correctly. I was sleeping on a long table during each of three nights while the enlisted men rotated between home and work at night and would wake me up for readings. The testing, along with other things, should determine if an electrical system part was failing and causing the problem, and if so, this would only require replacing that part in all the flying aircraft electrical systems. If not, the entire electrical system had to be replaced. I immediately called the proper people at the aircraft company and requested them to start working on the problem and how to solve it. I started looking at some of the initial test data and determined that I better set up another option and start checking if there was an electrical system being currently manufactured that could replace the current flying electrical system. To do that, I would have to each of the four electrical system manufacturers, and I had to determine their closest current electrical system being manufactured that could replace the current flying electrical system and obtain a

system to test without acknowledging why I was doing this because of the security classification. A tricky situation, but I did it and requested that the electrical system be delivered to me as soon as possible. By then, the original installed electrical system that we were testing in the equipment lab had failed in the same manner as the flying electrical systems, and the failure was not from a part. I suspected this would happen since it was manufactured at the same time and was identical to the same electrical system as on the originally installed aircraft. I had the lab remove the tested electrical system and prepare to immediately install the electrical system being delivered to me as soon as it arrived, which they did. While waiting, I prayed to God to help me solve this, “God, I believe that you want me to use this brain you gave me to solve my problems which I have done, but this electrical system we will test is my only and last hope. Please make it work!” We finished testing, and the Westinghouse electrical system worked and did not fail under any conditions. I looked up and thanked God with happy tears rolling down my eyes. I immediately called the aircraft manufacturer and asked them to bring their engineering group to Wright-Patterson to check and approve all my testing. They responded, and their engineering group checked everything for a number of days and confirmed all my tests were correct. At this point, they sent a procurement request to procurement at Wright-Patterson for that Westinghouse electrical system to replace all flying aircraft with that system. That request came to me for approval, and I made my bid evaluation, approving only that specific Westinghouse electrical system, which made it a sole source system, meaning that procurement could only buy that specific Westinghouse electrical system. I was really happy that the electrical system that worked was from Westinghouse instead of General Electric since I had previously worked at General Electric, and I could have been accused of favoritism because this was a very large procurement. Before this procurement, some major changes had been made at WrightPatterson AFB. Earlier, I mentioned the leadership role for the equipment lab rotated between a military leader and a civil service leader. The assistant was always the next leader. That rotation had occurred, and my bid evaluation now went to a civil service leader named George Sherman, and his assistant was a military major. When George Sherman, the civil service leader of the equipment lab, received my bid evaluation, he immediately sent Ruby, his secretary, to tell

me he wanted to talk with me. I went into the civil service leader’s office, and I was surprised that Mr. George Sherman did not ask a single engineering question. I was further surprised when Mr. George Sherman did not give a reason but only said that I needed to open up my bid evaluation. This would mean any of the four electrical system manufacturers could bid any electrical system they wanted, and the lowest bid would be accepted. This was exactly the wrong thing to do because it would not solve the problems and most likely make the problems worse. Prior to this, when my superior was Colonel Diefenderfer, he would want to understand the engineering basis for my evaluations, but he never ever ordered me to change my engineering evaluation like George Sherman was doing. I presented the following engineering information to Mr. George Sherman, civil service leader:

I told George Sherman I had test data on all available electrical systems that would work, and the one I specified was the only one that would solve the problems. I offered to show him the test data to explain why, but Mr. George Sherman, civil service leader, refused to look at it or consider it. I could not believe what was happening. George Sherman, civil service leader, was making engineering decisions and refusing to consider any engineering test data or any engineering recommendations. George Sherman continued to repeat that I should open up my bid evaluation. (It seemed like someone had told him to say, “Open up the bid evaluation.”) George Sherman, civil service leader, was the strangest engineering leader I ever had with, in or out of the US Air Force. I told George Sherman, civil service leader, that if I opened up the bid evaluation, it would not stop the four-engine-out crashes, killing everyone aboard but would probably make them worse! I was forced to conclude that George Sherman had little or no engineering knowledge, yet he was the civil service leader of an engineering organization. This was a major disaster waiting to happen.

I asked George Sherman, civil service leader, to call the chief engineer of the aircraft company and ask the chief engineer’s recommendation for the electrical system, and George Sherman refused to do that! I was forced to conclude that George Sherman was totally unaware of how a new electrical system was chosen for a new aircraft, so I told him the electrical system was a flight-safety item (meaning if that item failed, the aircraft would crash), and it required the approval of both the chief engineer of the aircraft company and the equipment lab (my engineering evaluation). I told him these two engineers could give him good recommendations and facts for him to consider, but he refused to them or listen to them. George Sherman, civil service leader, refused to ask the recommendations of the two engineers that had to agree before a new electrical system could be installed on a new aircraft. This was an excellent way to get good advice from competent engineers for this engineering decision, yet he was refusing to do it. George Sherman, civil service leader, seemed unaware that I told him that I would show him my engineering evaluations of all the electrical systems of the four electrical system manufacturers, and the only electrical system that would solve the problems in the bombers that were flying now was the electrical system I specified in my bid evaluation. Mr. Sherman refused to hear that information when I tried to repeat it. I told George Sherman that I had altitude chamber tests that proved the system I tested and specified in my bid evaluation would solve the problems, and I would show him and explain all that engineering information, and he refused that with no explanation why. The civil service leader kept repeating, “Open up the bid to all four of the electrical system manufactures.” I again told him this was a way that would not change the serious problems that were happening now.

When I tried to present all the engineering information that determined which electrical systems would cause the bomber to fly or which would cause the bomber to crash and that information had been completely evaluated and approved by the chief engineer of the aircraft system manufacturer, Mr. George Sherman would not even listen to it much less consider it. It made me wonder if this civil service leader George Sherman was a leader of an engineering

organization, yet he had zero engineering knowledge. All he could say was “Open this bid up.” I knew at this point, George Sherman was implying, “Do not bother me with the facts. Just do it.” This was a serious four-engine-out situation that needed immediate action. So I told him that I knew that he could sign anything I could sign, so I would write the bid evaluation to open it up for him to sign, but I would not sign it because it would not solve the problem and that he had to be the one that has to sign it. He said, “Do that.” I said to him, “, I said I would not sign it,” and I left. I wrote it up for him to sign and gave it unsigned to Ruby. Ruby then brought it back to me and said, “Mr. Sherman said you need to sign it.” I said to Ruby, “I told your boss that I would not sign it because it is not my evaluation. It is his evaluation, and he should sign it.” She took it back. The next thing that happened was the military major that was the assistant called me in his office. He had the bid evaluation, and he handed it to me and said, “I am asking you to sign this.” I said, “I will not sign that because it is not my bid evaluation. It is the civil service leader’s evaluation, and he should sign it. I signed my bid evaluation, and it was refused by the civil service leader. I offered to write his evaluation for him to sign, and I emphasized that I will not sign his evaluation.” The major said, “I am ordering you to sign it, and if you refuse, I can courtmartial you.” When I heard the court-martial threat, I decided immediately in my mind that if my choice was between refusing to sign and then be court marshaled and having to pound big rocks into small ones for the rest of my life, I would accept that rather than to sign a bid evaluation that would kill so many pilots, aircrews, and others aboard that I could not even estimate and which would be on my conscience for the rest of my life. The major said, “Do you understand that?” (Meaning, he could court-martial me.) I stood up, and I said, “I will tell you what I understand! I will tell you what I know that you already know that whoever signs that phony bid evaluation the civil service leader George Sherman wants, a leader I do not respect, will be

g the death sentence for everyone aboard all the future bombers that take off with that electrical system that it would specify. The only bid evaluation that corrects the problem and that I will sign is the original bid evaluation I signed. Further, if Colonel Diefenderfer were here, I am absolutely positive he would agree with me. and I am puzzled why you, wearing a United States Air Force uniform, tries to order and force me to sign that phony bid evaluation that would kill many Air Force personnel.” I immediately walked out of his office and waited for what would happen next. About a week or so ed, then Ruby came over and asked if she could have the original bid evaluation I submitted that I had signed. I gave it to her, and then I knew no one had the guts to disagree with me and sign the phony bid evaluation. I thanked God for answering my prayer and being on my side. Later, I found in the United States versus Keenan, the court of military appeals held that “the justification for acts done pursuant to orders does not exist if the order was of such a nature that a man of ordinary sense and understanding would know it to be illegal.” I am licensed as an electrical engineer, and I know that order to be illegal. At the end of my tour of duty, the civil service leader offered me a position to work for him when I would have refused to work for him even if it had been the last job in the world. I sincerely hope the president of the United States will agree with me and make changes, so this situation never happens again. I should also add that the most significant reason for me to write A Unique Man’s Journey through Life was to have a way to present this to the president of the United States and/or other appropriate levels of government, hoping to make sure another person like civil service leader George Sherman does not ever be in a position to abuse military officers like me again. That night after Ruby asked for my original bid evaluation, when I said my Lord’s Prayer and I was at the “deliver us from evil” part, I stopped and said, “God, George Sherman must be the evil, and please help me work this out so that George Sherman will not be killing everyone that will fly in that aircraft.” When I confirmed that procurement had my bid evaluation, I knew I had God’s help, and I thanked God again. Later, I checked, and there were zero problems with the system I specified.

After my tour of duty, when I was again working for General Electric and President Eisenhower had approved the construction of Falcon Dam, I sold General Electric’s large hydro generators to the construction manager of Falcon Dam on the Rio Grande between Mexico and the USA. I believe the construction manager’s name I worked with was Dewey Gear. His niece was Arlene Dahl, the movie star. Dewey Gear also invited me to him when his niece was visiting him. I thanked him but declined. I know he told me he was at the highest level of civil service, and he had also been an iral in the US Navy. Certainly, he was very competent, and this was the kind of civil service leader that should have been in George Sherman’s position. Either that or someone like Colonel Diefenderfer. I pray that the president of the United States will make changes so that this kind of problem can never happen again. Before I left, the US Air Force awarded me the National Defense Service Medal. I checked after I left the Air Force and found that all the electrical systems I designed performed properly. I was also happy because when I left the Air Force, I had seventeen unsolicited job offers—one or more from every airframe company, like Boeing, Northrop, and North American, and every electrical company like GE, Westinghouse, and Lear Siegler, i.e., everyone that I had worked with. I thank Colonel Diefenderfer, whom I really respected and who promoted me at Wright-Patterson AFB, and I know he would be proud of my decisions on electrical systems, which were flight-safety items—meaning they could cause the aircraft to crash. I checked every electrical system I designed and found that none of them failed, which made me very proud and happy. However, I believe he would be the proudest of me when I was threatened with court-martial if I refused to sign a bid evaluation that I am positive would have caused every Air Force aircraft it was on to crash killing everyone aboard. My standard was to “avoid even the appearance of wrongdoing,” but I was absolutely amazed at what people would do for money. (I knew I would give my own life if that prevented me from having to sign a bid evaluation that I was positive from my engineering experience would kill everybody on board, probably thousands of Air Force personnel.)

Back to GE After Wright-Patterson Air Force Base

From the seventeen offers, I chose between GE and Westinghouse. I really liked and wanted to work for the division manager of Westinghouse, but I chose to return to GE that offered me a much higher salary. I became an executive at GE, responsible for the large business area of electrical systems for both military and commercial aircraft. The pricing I was doing required me to understand the Robinson-Patman Act and the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890. If I violated either of those, GE would be punished, and I would be sent to jail. (GE provided me a lawyer.) I returned to General Electric, obtained a master’s degree in professional business management, and I became manager of airborne equipment at Waynesboro, Virginia, when GE was at the bottom #4. However, in four years, I took GE from bottom #4 to #1, the top of that large market. GE provided medical evaluations for executives with stress ratings of one through four. My stress rating was four, which was the same as the chief executive officer of GE. I was amazed and proud at how much GE paid me and by the amount of responsibility GE gave me at twenty-six years old.

The Lockheed Electra Aircraft Crashes

I obtained the order for the electrical system on the Lockheed Electra. In the beginning, all went well with the series of meetings between Lockheed and GE (fifteen or so engineers that were required from each for properly deg the system). I was the lead for GE, and A was the lead for Lockheed. GE was shipping electrical systems that met all requirements of the Lockheed specifications. A told me in a meeting that we had to reduce the weight of the electrical systems and asked how much weight GE could reduce. I had a bad feeling about this question. I immediately told my secretary to never schedule me on another Lockheed Electra. I discussed this with the engineering manager

and, in writing, told him to tell all the engineers they should not discuss the weight situation with anyone. When we had further meetings with A, I advised that GE would not accept any weight reduction to what we had previously accepted in the specification. I continued making notes of our meeting and sending a confirming copy to A. A continued arguing for a weight reduction, and I kept refusing. I told my manager that I had a personality conflict with A, and he should remove me. He checked with all the others in the meeting, and he told me that everyone said I was the best to handle A. I checked to find out if GE had any returns under warranty, and I requested the return generators be tested to determine if it failed on vibration and how much and how many. Just before I left GE to move to California, I offered to go to Lockheed and recover the amount where the failure was high vibration. I talked to the chief engineer at Lockheed and brought back A check to GE for $100,000. I went to dinner with A afterward, and his attitude had really changed, and he was asking me what they had done wrong. He felt so bad about it that I felt sad, and I did not want to make it worse for him, so I did not say anything. By chance, when I was at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, the businessman’s hotel, the division manager of Westinghouse, who had offered me a job, came over and ed me at my table. I was happy to see him again. During our talk, he asked me if Westinghouse was even in the market. I felt sad for him and said that Westinghouse was definitely GE’s toughest competitor. After we talked and just before he left, he said, “As long as I am at Westinghouse, you still have a job offer.” I thanked him. Another chance meeting happened when I was waiting in the Washington National Airport, and the assistant to the engineering manager at General Electric came over to me and said that I almost got him fired, and he refreshed my memory. I had called for a meeting with about twenty people I needed for early shipment to obtain a large order. He was seated next to his engineering manager. I suggested how this could be accomplished and started asking each one if they could do their part. Everyone except Harry, the engineering manager, said yes. I made a second suggestion, and everyone except Harry, the engineering manager, said yes. I asked some else to make a suggestion, and everyone except Harry, the engineering manager, said yes. At that point, I started staring directly at Harry, and the only sound in the room was my four fingernails

drumming on the table, and I said, “Harry, are you trying to solve this problem, or are you part of the problem?” The assistant knew if he laughed, Harry might fire him, but he could hardly hold the laugh. Finally, Harry did say, “Yes.” While working at GE, I was given the choice of wonderful training programs like manufacturing engineer, design engineer, sales engineer, etc., and I chose sales engineer. On the first day of sales engineering class, the instructor said, “You have to know how to meet and greet new customers.” When you first walked in his office, looked around at his desk for pictures, his ring, like a Mason’s ring, and established something in common with him. He asked everyone to give him an example, and most were very close to the instructor’s example. When it got to me, I said that when I walked into his office, I saw a picture of a beautiful woman on his desk, and I said so and asked if that was his wife. He proudly said yes, and I said, “We have something in common. You are married to the same woman I divorced three years ago.” (Everybody laughed.) GE paid the highest salary in order to get the best engineers from the best universities. If I thought the competition was tough at Texas A&M, I did not understand competition until I worked at GE. However, it was a privilege to meet the many great people at GE. My first obligation was to pay my dad back for what he borrowed for me to attend Texas A&M, so I sent him half my GE paycheck each payday until it was paid off. When I first went back to Dalhart, I heard that my dad had gone all over town, saying he sent a sixteen-year-old boy to Texas A&M and got a twenty-year-old man back that knew to the penny the amount of the checks written for his expenses and paid it back to the penny even after his father had told him not to pay it back since it was his contribution to my education. After completing the eleven years of test engineering, I reported to General Electric headquarters in Schenectady, New York. I had to buy two suits, one being cleaned and one being worn because I was now a “professional.” Every Monday morning, I took one suit into the very nice lady at the dry cleaners and picked the other suit up, along with a lot of conversation that was much more sophisticated than the eighteen-year-old lady I dated in high school. She invited me over for dinner. I thanked her and politely said no. Each invitation became increasingly more inviting than the last one until she offered desert that to most

men was the ultimate. Then I asked if I could ask her a personal question. She said yes. I could ask her anything I wanted, emphasizing the anything. I said, “After I have told you no in a nice way so many times, why do you keep asking?” I learned something about women (and maybe men too) from her answer. She said, “I have found out from experience that there are only so many nos in a man.” This statement certainly deserved an important place in my relationship psychology study. One exceptional person I met and I immediately knew he was exceptional was a USC graduate with both electrical and mechanical engineering degrees and had a license for the unlimited tonnage and unlimited horsepower, i.e., he was qualified as chief engineer on any ship afloat. When I first met him and while discussing the subject of luck, I told him that I believed that what people called good luck and bad luck happened because of the previous decisions and choices they had made. He agreed, was impressed, and we became instant friends. Although I was seven years younger, Bob and I competed for the same job at GE, and the manager hired both of us because he could not decide which one to take. Later, we both competed, and both were accepted as exhibit engineers for the “more power to America special” train, which had GE equipment in every car and presented new products for the utility and industrial executives and was the largest sales promotion adventure ever undertaken by a company. I was in the last car, and when one executive was leaving, he ed out on the stairs to the ground, and I caught him so he would not fall. I shouted to get someone to call the paramedics, and I dragged him over to the shade. I removed his tie and other restrictions to ensure he could breathe freely and gave him R. The manager of the train was there when the paramedics arrived, and the paramedics said I had saved his life. The train manager asked me how I knew what to do, and I told him that when I was a Boy Scout, I took the Red Cross R course. The train manager had been doubtful about me before because I was the youngest exhibit engineer selected, but after that, we became very close friends, and he had no doubts about me. Elliot also knew that my saving the executive’s life had saved GE from a large lawsuit, which would also reflect on him. After Elliot left GE, he flew to visit with me regularly for the next eighteen years when I was working at various different cities all over the US.

Bob went on to manage the first atomic power plant in Arco, Idaho, and later, iral Rickover hired him to train the crew on the first atomic submarine. Bob and I were close friends for thirty-one years, and it was a great loss when he died in 2017. The GE regional manager had stated that every sales engineer should wear a hat and play golf. I tried wearing a hat, and I kept leaving the hat, and I hated golf, so I thought the regional manager would probably be happier if I got good contracts for GE even if I did not wear a hat or play golf. (Later, I obtained a major contract from Swift & Company for GE, which was GE’s first contract after thirty years of GE’s zero contracts from Swift & Company.) When I received my US Air Force orders to report to Lackland AFB, Texas, Swift & Company canceled the contract. I went back to Swift & Company with Bob Eichner, my manager, and we were able to get the contract reinstated.

Part Four

My Principles in Life Particularly with Regard to Relationships

What my Aunt Ruby wrote in my autograph book became my first principle of life, “There is a destiny that makes us all brothers,” “None goes his way alone,” “All that we send into the lives of others comes back into our own.” I had tested this over and over, and it was always true for positive things. I also had indications that it was also true for negative things. In this situation, I considered it true for negative things, and my mother would be paid back. I am sure she recognized the change in my relationship with her, and I suspect that my brother did the same thing because I know he had the kind of love for my father that I did. Following my first principle of life, to help or contribute something positive to someone’s life, became my first response for almost everyone I met and certainly for everyone with whom I was in a love relationship. My PhD study in relationships provided me the opportunity and knowledge to help myself and other people with their problems. I was surprised how often the problems in relationships were related to sexuality. For short time s, I would at least make them laugh to add something to their life. I when I was driving in an isolated area of Nevada, and I stopped at this small empty restaurant to rest, and I asked this frowning waitress for a cup of tea, which she brought, and I said, “You set the record for delivering a cup of tea!” No facial change but rather a dour look that said, “I hate this job.” It was going to be a challenge to make her laugh. I finished the tea and asked for more water and a tea bag. She brought water and said, “You don’t need another tea bag. You

can use that tea bag two more times,” which I did, and I ordered another cup of tea, finished that, and asked the waitress for a check and a doggy bag. She said, “You don’t need a doggy bag.” And I said, “Yes, I do. I have two more uses on my tea bag.” Finally, her first laugh and I gave her a nice tip. It did not take me long to realize that my first principle of life, helping others, and the Golden Rule were all intertwined. When I followed that philosophy, I received so much more in return that I realized it had to be a philosophy from God, who has been in my life since I was born, and I truly thank him for that. I know that God spoke to me the first time when I kept asking for a BB gun at a very young age, received it, and I excitedly ran out to shoot sparrows, which were everywhere in Texas. I finally hit one, and it fell to the ground. I ran over and picked the dead sparrow up, and while I was looking at it, God spoke, making me feel a tremendous wave of remorse that I had taken a life for no reason at all. I thank God for that early lesson, and after that, I learned to shoot by shooting at paper targets. Also, when I went fishing, I never caught fish unless they were used for food. I never caught and threw them back because the hook would cause them to die. Over the years, I would question myself if I was on the right path for my life. This seemed like a good time to reevaluate my life, and I lived in the perfect place to do so because I could walk across ocean drive from my apartment and sit by myself on the sand overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. I had carved out concealed steps down to the beach, so I would be alone. I sat there and decided that I had to live my life by my beliefs in the Bible, which is the Word of God and not let others or any church dictate my life (see pages 12–13 for my Baptist Church problems). I would not have ed the Baptist Church, but at nine years old, I was pushed by my mother and others in the church to be baptized, along with my friend before me or any other nine-year-old knew the meaning of baptism. My friend, Gerald, went first, and I asked him what it was like. He was dripping wet and said, “I feel like a duck.” Over time, I developed strong feelings that it was wrong for me to be a member of the Baptist Church, so I had to resign. (My reasons are mentioned in the earlier part of this book. Those made me feel like it was morally wrong for me to

be in a church that lied.) I called the Baptist Church, and they told me I could not resign. I tried the next best thing and asked how I could change my letter to another church, and they said to write a letter requesting my letter, which I did. I received a postcard instead of a letter, saying I was a member. I cut the postcard in pieces and said to God, “I hereby resign from the Baptist Church,” and threw the pieces in the trash. I would live my life by my ethics and by my interpretation of the Bible. The Baptist Church was like many other churches that stated emphatically that “the Bible is the Word of God” and then had the audacity to make changes or additions to the “Word of God.” I believe the Bible is the Word of God period. I believe the Bible is the Word of God, and I believe the Bible loses a lot of its meaning if we allow churches or individuals to change the Word of God. Over time, I developed two characteristics. The first was an ability to “think out of the box,” and the second was the ability to quickly recognize the exceptional people I met in my life and to respond to them appropriately. Many times, this opportunity only presented itself for a very short time, and I should add that recognizing the kind of person you should avoid also requires the same quick decision. I read all of Masters and Johnson’s books and understood everything, but I was surprised that I found some things they did not find. My own observations really helped me. For example, the most common complaint I have heard from many women was expressed by my secretary that had been with me two years at a large manufacturing plant when she came to my office one day and said, “May I close the door?” She sat down and said, “I see all the psychology magazines and books that come in your mail, so I think you will know how to help me, but I don’t know how to say my problem.” I said, “Just say it to me the way you would say it to your best girlfriend.” She said, “When my husband and I get into bed, it’s ‘bam, bam, thank you, ma’am,’ and then he rolls over and goes to sleep, and I haven’t even gotten started.” I helped her with that problem, and then I found more women asking, “May I close the door.” I immediately told my secretary to quit advertising for me. I asked her how many women she knew with the same problem, and she said a lot. It was not very long after that when she came into work one day with pancake

makeup to cover all the bruises. I helped her call a divorce lawyer, and she filed for a divorce. Not long after that, both of us resigned from the company where we were working, and I helped her start a new life and a new business and put her on the path to become a millionaire, which she later accomplished. If I know anything about relationships where I am sixteen-credit hours from a PhD at UCLA, I know that really loving relaxing sexual experiences for both are the steel glue that helps create and keep the harmonious relationships that God wanted us to have instead of ing the 60-something percent divorce rate. Think about the divorce rate, would you fly an airline that crashed 60-something percent of the time? You and I can understand more about God and ourselves if we look at how and why God made us:

Genesis 2:7—And the Lord God formed man. Genesis 2:18—Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him [a helper good for him].” Genesis 2:21—And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and took one of his ribs. Genesis 2:22—And the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man built it into a woman and brought her unto the man. Genesis 2:23—And Adam said, “This is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman because she was taken out of man.”

Obviously, from the way God designed man and woman, coming from the same place, He also intended them to fit together well and to have a relationship where the man desires the woman and the woman desires the man (which makes both happy and harmonious so that they stay together). Most women innately have this feeling and in today’s language, call it “chemistry” then say they cannot have a relationship unless there is chemistry. (I

call those relationships love relationships.) If you continue to analyze the why and how God designed the man and the woman, you can understand more about God’s intent from Exodus chapter 20, verse 1 that says, “And God spake all these words saying [a divine rule, the same as any of the Ten Commandments].” Chapter 21, verse 10, says, “If he take him another wife, her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.” This shows clearly that God knew that man might need more women than just one. At times, I needed more than one woman, and I thank God that He guided me to the above scriptures in the Bible. Certainly, we can learn about God from the Word of God, the Bible, and nothing from those that say the Bible is the Word of God and then try to change it. Another way to learn about God is to look at how God designed the man and the woman. I pose a question to you to see how much you, the reader, knows about the design of the man and woman. The question is: There is only one organ in the body that is exclusively for the function of sexual pleasure. My question is, “Is that organ in the man or in the woman, and what organ is it?” If God did not want sexual pleasure to be enjoyed, he would not have put an organ for sexual pleasure in the body. I decided that I had to live my life by my beliefs based on the Bible, which was the Word of God, and not let others or any church dictate my life. After I made the above decision, I had a surprise when I was talking to the blond receptionist at Celanese (where I represented GE) and where I had been unsuccessful in getting a date with her. This time, she asked me if I had been drinking. I said, “No, never when I am working.” I sensed something had changed, and I asked her for a date again, and she accepted. During the date, she told me that I had a different personality, which she liked. I realized that my decisions looking at the Gulf of Mexico were right since those decisions removed the heavy mental load I was carrying. I had a beautiful love relationship with the blond receptionist at Celanese that we both fully enjoyed and continued until I received my US Air Force orders to report to Lackland AFB, Texas. When I was growing up, I was seeing my mother and father in a relationship that

was certainly not harmonious. I visited my friends and saw their mothers and fathers did not have a harmonious relationship. I wondered the percent of harmonious marriages and the percent that were not harmonious. My eighteen-year-old girlfriend had a mastoid problem, so she was taught to read lips. I would take her to places where husbands and wives were talking to each other, thinking no one could hear them, and she could tell me what they were saying. So many times, they were in arguments or fights— meaning they did not have a harmonious relationship. Other times, there was just silence, except for words like “ the salt,” meaning they did not have a harmonious relationship. We went to a number of places and listened to many conversations, and almost all of them showed some indication they had a relationship that was not harmonious. I felt the weight of having all this information that could affect other people’s lives, so I asked that my girlfriend and I swear to God that we would never reveal personal information about others to anybody else, which we followed (looks like I was creating our own privacy laws). After that, we listened to many more. I found there were very few that had a harmonious relationship. I knew the divorce rate then was 60-something percent, and I believe that was a major contributor to why the divorce rate was so high. I started thinking about relationships. I started realizing that good relationships will have a major influence on my life and other people’s lives, starting as early as the first grade. If a first-grade student is taught to be courteous and nice to the teacher and to do what she says as well as make good grades, the first-grade student will find this kind of relationship will provide good help from the teacher when they need help. My experience tells me this is true, not only for first grade but also for all the grades up to, including the PhD level. The ability to develop good relationships when one starts looking for a boyfriend or a girlfriend is important. When you find somebody that you really like, you need to know how to develop a good relationship with them so you can have the time with them to determine if it can be something serious. If you can’t get that second date, you are doing something wrong and need to learn more about how to develop good relationships. When you come to the point where you need a job, you have to learn how to develop a good relationship with the person that is interviewing you for the job. When you get the job, you need to know how to develop good relationships with your boss and with the people you have to work with.

If you want to sell lemonade or complex electronic equipment, you have to learn how to develop good relationships with your customers or your clients. If you are hired by a corporation, you have to learn how to develop good relationships with your manager and the people you will work within the corporation. If you are a manager, you will have to develop good relationships with your manager and with the people that are working for you. Whenever you make that very important decision about the person you’re going to marry or live with, it is very important that you have the ability to develop good relationships with the other people that might be involved in that marriage or live-in relationship. Please realize it is even important that the president of the United States has the ability to develop good relationships with other leaders of many countries all over the world. When I determined the educational requirements for a psychoanalyst, I found it required two PhDs, first in medicine and second in psychoanalysis, which was sixteen years of educational study. I did not have the money for a four-year education, much less sixteen years of education, which gave me a new meaning for the word realism. I had to change my plans to the following: (1) only one PhD in relationship psychology, i.e., developing good relationships, (2) change all my electives from engineering to be in relationship psychology, (3) allsummer school and correspondence schools in relationship psychology. I realized that to run an electrical engineering experiment, I had to be in an electrical engineering lab. However, I lived in a psychology lab with people all around me that I could understand and learn psychology by observation. For example, at Texas A&M, I met regularly with five other freshmen at a place where we had coffee together. We were all in the military and had to keep our rooms very neat, or we were punished. When I could, I would arrive first and pull a napkin half out of the napkin holder to see if this neatness extended to our six-man table. I found there was always someone of the six that would pull the rest of the napkin out of the napkin holder so that it looked neat. This was my first psychology experiment. At that time, there were only a few cars on Texas A&M campus. Together with my Aggie classmate, we walked everywhere. I would find another Aggie to walk with, him, and lead the conversation to “Someday, you are probably going to consider marriage. If you had only two choices, would you rather marry a

submissive woman or an intelligent woman?” I was amazed that 90 percent said a submissive woman. In four years, I would estimate that I asked this question to about eight hundred different male students. (At that time, A&M had only males.) I was amazed because then and now, I would choose an intelligent woman. This was my second and the most interesting psychology study that I made at Texas A&M.

Part Five

My Relationships

Twins (D and J)

In my junior year at Christmas, I went to pick up a car for my dad near Chicago, and I stayed with an Aggie friend in Chicago. Another Aggie had given me the names of two airline stewardesses that I will call D and J that were twins from Texas but based in Chicago. I called them, and D agreed to go out with me and J to go out with the Aggie I was staying with. The Aggie I was staying with was busy the next day, so I called to see if I could see D, and both said I should bring the car and all my belongings and spend the next five days with them, which I did. They had a two-bedroom apartment, and I slept with D at night, but everything else, we three did together, such as going through an actual underground coal mine in one of the museums and various other places for them to show me all of Chicago. I was nineteen and under the Chicago drinking age, so they told me to subtract two years from the year I was born when they asked me my age when I ordered a drink. Instead, I added two years, and we had to go to another bar. They both really laughed at this and never let me, the engineer, forget it. This started an over twenty-year love relationship with them that was just fantastic. My study of psychology was of real interest to them because they made use of it by explaining their relationship with the man each one was dating or engaged to, and since I was a man and also had psychology knowledge, they would ask how he would think and what I thought she should do. Each had five engagements, and both would return the rings when they broke the engagement. For D, each accepted all the rings back. For J, each said words like keep it in memory of me. One time at their parents’ house, J and I were sitting on the floor with her five rings laid out, and she said, “What shall I do with these?” I took the ring with the biggest diamond for the center and put two of the other two rings on each side of it. Then I said, “Just take the diamonds out and make one friendship ring that you can look at and each of the five men.” They both would regularly fly to where I was working, so all three of us could go out together, then D would spend the night with me. All the other time was enjoyed by the three of us together. The two of them had made an agreement that they would always fly together and never fly alone. Both of them asked me to

come and meet their parents and spend the night, which I did. When I arrived, I met their parents and really liked both of them. At one point, I was with their mother in the room with a new stereo. She said, “You are an electrical engineer, and would you see if you could fix our stereo? We have had four service people out, but no one could fix it.” I said, “I’ll try, but it may take some time.” She said she would be doing something else. I was taking my power courses at Texas A&M and had not taken the electronics courses, which I needed. However, I really wanted to fix the stereo to impress them. I thought and thought, and then I looked at it and checked that it was connected to 60-cycle AC power, and it was. (I ed that something like 60 percent of reported GE refrigerator problems was because it was not plugged into a receptacle.) More thinking and I that somewhere I found out that solder ts could crack and cause an open circuit. So I thought some more and said, “God, please help.” Then, I hit the side of the stereo with my open hand as hard as I could. Suddenly, the stereo came on at high volume, and everybody in the house suddenly came in, saying, “What did you do?” I said, “Give me some time to think about how I could explain the electronics in a way you all could understand.” They went ahead with their plans, and D and J took me upstairs to a bedroom and said this would be my special room when I was at their house. D said that everyone would be asleep by 11:30 p.m., so at that time, I should turn the lights off in my room and be in bed, and D would slip into my room shortly after 11:30 p.m. since that was the time the hallway lights were off. Then she would return to her room before anybody would wake up. One time when we met at their parents’ house, the plan was that D would pick me up at the airport. However, J picked me up instead. She said that D had to take an emergency flight and would be back that night. I went to sleep that night, thinking that it was D in bed with me at 11:30 p.m. The next morning at breakfast, J was there but no D. I said, “Where is D?” and J said she was not able to fly back last night. That meant that for the first time, I had spent the night with J. I was really shocked. I thought I have to tell D that I

slept with J, but that might cause them to be angry with each other, and I had never heard a cross word between the twins. With their mother there, I had to maintain my neutral expression. I left early before D came back to give me time to think about what to do. Later, I wondered why I did not know I was in bed with J. It was dark, and I realized that J in bed was just like D in bed. I called the next time I was to see them. D answered, and before I could say anything, she said she and J would start alternating overnights with me and asked if I would agree. I said yes, and I felt relief from my problem, but I did get her to it they had both planned that overnight in a way I had to spend it with J when I would think it was D. One time when I was with J, she said, “I want you to do to me what you did to D in San Antonio.” I was not surprised because I knew they had no secrets from each other, and I knew the three of us could be open, and we were having beautiful love relationships with each other. I was really happy at that point because I knew all of us knew they could ask for and get what they wanted in our relationships. I loved that I had a wonderful relationship with D and a wonderful relationship with J. All three of us really enjoyed our relationship together and were very open with the three of us. I have always tried to adjust to what a woman wants in a relationship because if she is happy in the relationship, she will generally make me happy. I adjusted to what the twins wanted in our relationship, and each made me happy in the relationship. I had a beautiful love relationship with each of them that lasted over twenty years until D wanted to have a child, and a top airline official wanted to marry her. J told me that D would give him a reply in two weeks. J also said that D would marry me if I asked her within two weeks. Their father was a billionaire in today’s money. I knew if I married D that J would probably move in with us, and we all would have plenty of money. I was really tempted to accept this, but I had this burning desire to know if I could be successful and make money on my own. That offer was sure hard to refuse, but I did.

Rich Lady from Peru

Marriage possibilities with large money seemed to be coming at me in various ways. My roommate from Peru at Texas A&M had been to the coming-out party for the really beautiful and only daughter of the richest man in Peru. He gave me her address. She and I exchanged letters until she complained about me marking out a word in the letter, saying I should have rewritten the letter. I wrote that I was taking electrical engineering, and only fifteen out of every one hundred graduated from this toughest course at Texas A&M. I would have to stop writing her because I was going to graduate as one of the fifteen. She wrote back that she was coming with her entourage to determine if she would marry me. I wrote back, then I stopped. My roommate thought I was crazy to tell her I had to stop writing her and super crazy not to marry her. I had pictures of her that agreed with his confirmation of super beautiful. I tried to explain that I wanted to see if I could earn money myself and not marry into it, but he never understood. My roommate’s uncle was on the board of Allis-Chalmers and would ensure I would have a job when I graduated and then mentor me to the executive level. I said no. She said, “You are right about that. What do you want?” I said, “I want one list of telephone numbers of all the women that do and another list of numbers of all the women that don’t.” She stopped, turned around, looked me straight in the eyes, and said, “Honey, they all do.” So I asked for and got a date with her. I was attracted to her because she was very intelligent and knew what she wanted. {SX} However, we ran into an unusual problem when we made love. She told me to bite her nipple, and she kept saying bite harder, and I was afraid of biting her nipple off. She told me that was the only way she could orgasm when she was with her divorced husband, so I needed to bite her nipple harder until she orgasmed. She also said that I was the only other man she had been with sexually. I told her I would bite her nipple harder the next time we dated, but I wanted to be prepared if something unexpected happened. I reasoned that the brain had made an error, and this level of pain was interpreted by the brain as a certain level of sexual excitement. {SX} I thought that if I reduced the level of biting and pain, I would have to substitute another form of sexual excitement to get her to orgasm. I ed my experience with double dating and the moans of my lady in the front seat that sexually excited the moans of another lady in the back seat. So I had her watch adult movies with women who moaned, and each time, I gradually reduced the nipple biting while she watched the adult movies until she could orgasm with just normal biting of the nipple. Whenever circumstances permitted, I would pursue my educational objective to become a PhD in relationship psychology to develop concepts for good relationships, but I always took time to help others. I had another situation where I was close friends with both the wife and the husband, who was my coworker. They both knew I was studying to become a PhD in relationship psychology to develop concepts to have good relationships. Each individually would ask my advice about their relationship, and eventually, both started talking about their intimacy issues. Both of them said that I really helped them to improve their relationship. As time went on, they both told me that the wife had only experienced sex with the husband and no one else. That was a problem for both of them because they both felt she needed more experience. {SX} They both wanted me to have sex with the wife to give her more experience. By using my PhD studies to become a psychoanalyst, my thoughts were that although they might have a {SX} sexual problem between them, I thought we should first look at it as to how to improve the relationship between them. I said if they wanted to look at it as {SX} a sexual problem. I said that a really good relationship is important to have a really {SX} good sexuality. I said I wanted each of them to buy their own copy of Relationship Rescue by Phillip C. McGraw, PhD, to study and help them understand themselves and how to improve their relationship and their {SX} sexuality. I said I would also continue to help them. They asked what my experience was with the sexual problems of others. I said that it was best shown by an experience I had when I was a manager in a large factory. My secretary, after we had known each other for over two years, came into the office one day and said, “May I close the door?” I said yes, and she closed the door and then sat down. She said, “I know you know a lot about psychology because of all the psychology magazines and psychology books that are in your mail. I have a problem, but I don’t know how to say this to you.” I said, “Just say it like you’re talking to your best girlfriend.” {SX} She said, “When my husband and I get into bed, it’s ‘bam, bam, thank

you, ma’am,’ and then he rolls over and goes to sleep, and I haven’t even gotten started.” I told her this was a common problem. I said, “When I was doing medical research, I found a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, which is the most prestigious medical journal in the US, that was done in 1998 on several thousand sexually active women both married and unmarried. They found that only 47 percent of them had ever experienced an {SX} orgasm. I was really surprised since only {SX} 47 percent of the women that have had sex had ever had an {SX} orgasm, and that shows that men have real problems understanding women’s needs.” (I know I included this information in this document before, but it is so important I include it the second time.) (I did not tell her that I was deg what I called the self-relaxer with which a man could give women an {SX} orgasm, or she could use it for an orgasm when he was really tired, or he had ? or ED.) I told her this information explained this was a common problem with a lot of men, but knowing that did not help her with her problem. I suggested she find a good psychologist that specialized in this kind of problem so that he could talk with both of them to solve their problem. I had three other women come into my office and say, “May I close the door.” I went through the same discussion that I had with my secretary. I asked them if they knew other married women that had that same problem, and all of them said yes. When I finished with them, I called my secretary in the office and told her I was not running the corner psychology shop and for her to stop giving me referrals. (This situation with vulnerable married women would be considered by most men as a great opportunity.) I have always believed that a relationship that includes sex carries with it a large responsibility to make sure the relationship is positive for the other person, particularly if the woman is vulnerable. This is so difficult that I prefer to have a relationship with a woman that knows what she wants, and we can have a positive and fulfilling relationship for both of us. With the psychology knowledge and the ethics I have, I would refuse a relationship with a vulnerable woman and, of course, one under the age of consent. Sometimes, women would ask or do things I did not suggest, and that would surprise me.

{SX} A surprise like this happened at my first birthday party my wife planned and told me she invited Ruthie that I met once and was her very close friend since childhood. When they were little, they liked to play under a bed that was very private. My wife and Ruthie served a nice dinner with wine. Ruthie told me that her navy husband had erectile disfunction from an explosion when disarming a bomb in the water. After several glasses of wine, my wife and Ruthie went into the bedroom, and my wife told me not to come in until she came out to get me. When she came out, she gave me a blindfold to put on and said to wait until she would take me in the room. In a few minutes, she came out and took me in the room still blindfolded, and they both started undressing me while singing Happy Birthday! I helped. Both had Victoria’s Secret sexy lingerie on. That was the best Birthday Gift I ever had. Another time like this happened when I needed an additional engineer that came from a GE group where I could try someone for a four-month trial work period. At the end of which, I could offer them a job when a month before the end. When that was getting close to the end, I had not offered him a job. I had a Christmas party at my home for those working for me. I was mixing drinks for everyone, and his wife came over to deliver the drinks for me. She picked a time when no one else could see and was rubbing her breasts on my back. Prior to that, she had told me she really wanted a job for him, and I got the message from her. Her husband was not aggressive enough for sales—if her husband had been as aggressive as she was, I would have hired him.

German Lady in New York

{SX} In New York City, I found that to get a taxicab, you held your hand up at the curb, and a cab would stop if they did not have any engers. If they did have a enger(s), they would ask the enger(s) if they would agree for the cabbie to take another enger. I held my hand up, and when I opened the door, I found a lady in the back seat. I said, “May I share the cab with such a good-looking lady?” She smiled and said, “Yes.” I sat beside her and said, “I take that back. You are a very beautiful woman,” and we started talking. I recognized this was someone that I really wanted to know. The driver had two rearview mirrors, one on the rearview and the other on the engers. When he looked at me, I winked at him instead of stating my destination. He knew that I wanted him to drive around. I had the feeling this was a remarkable lady, and I wanted to know more about her, and I needed time. The more I talked to her, the more I learned about her. She was from and worked as a model for mink coats for a Jewish Fifth Avenue furrier and later also became his office manager. This, by itself, was remarkable because of the German’s treatment of the Jews. She was very intelligent and was able to become a citizen in the USA after WWII ended, which was also remarkable. She told me that when was defeated in WWII, Hitler had sent SS troops to make sure all his top commanders took suicide pills. She saw her father, who was the top commander of the German submarine fleet, die in front of her, along with her mother, who was also killed. After that, she said that there was no law enforcement, and she realized she had to do whatever the SS troops wanted. At this point, I noticed her reactions, and I told her to stop telling me the story because I did not want her to have to live through that again. I told her I really liked her because she was so intelligent and could work out really serious problems. Also, I said I wanted to develop a love relationship with her. She happily agreed. Her intelligence probably came from her father. We really

enjoyed our time together. I saw her every time I was in New York, and we really enjoyed the beautiful relationship we had for four years until I moved to Malibu, California. I cannot ignore the fact that I knew the daughter of the German U-boat (submarine) commander that was sinking the Merchant Marine ships on which Bob, my USC electrical and mechanical degree friend was chief engineer and that carried American weapons to England to fight the Germans and that I had a German mechanical PhD from Peenemünde doing the mechanical design of US Air Force electrical systems that I designed. This was an interesting combination of people I knew or worked with.

Teacher at Waynesboro, Virginia

{SX} I met a teacher I loved, and she returned that love. I was still trying to help people with my psychology knowledge. She knew another teacher that was her very best friend and was getting married, but she had a problem when she had sex with her boyfriend since it was really painful. She could tolerate it now since she only saw him every two weeks, but she knew it would be every night once they were married, and she needed to do something about it now. The teacher I loved was asking me what she could do. I said she should go to her doctor and ask him. The answer came back that there was no way she would ask her doctor. I realized there was no way I could help her unless I saw her and had sex with her to see what was happening, and the answer to that was “She would try that.” I told the teacher that I loved that she had to be with us, and I said I would have sex with her first and then the other teacher, and she agreed. (I was aware of situations where the woman had agreed, but then filed rape charges later.) I found a motel that would be comfortable and had two beds close to each other in a semi dark room. We three went in, and everybody undressed, and I made love to the teacher I loved first, and her moans had the other teacher in the other bed taking my hand and pulling me into her bed ( when I had a lady in the front seat moaning and it started a lady in the back seat to moan). I kissed the other teacher and excited her more, and I reached between her legs, and she was dry as a bone. I took K-Y Jelly and put it inside her and on my condom and very slowly entered her—no pain at all. I continued until she had an orgasm and no pain. I gave her the tube of K-Y Jelly and told her that she should always make sure she had the K-Y Jelly inside her before she made love with her boyfriend. However, I emphasized I was not a doctor, and that it was very important that she see a gynecologist since it was my guess her Bartholin’s glands were not lubricating properly. We all had good feelings, and she was more than extremely thankful. (I felt great satisfaction for being able to use my psychology studies to solve her problem and get her to a proper doctor, and I want to emphasize that I gave her an orgasm, but I did not have an orgasm except with the teacher I loved.)

I am proud of myself because I never lied and told a woman I loved her to get in her pants. When relationships had a sexual side, I considered that I had to keep it confidential. I always looked for a long-term relationship, not a one-night stand. I had some situations that it was hard for me to decide what was right like the one that was the daughter whose father helped me get a job at GE. When she came to the A&M for the dance, I did everything to make her happy. At the dance, she was giving signals she was available for me. I knew that women disliked men that used them. I felt guilty that I had used her to get the job from GE, so I did not respond. Friend Who Invented the Tunnel

I met a friend in Washington, DC, who invented the tunnel that connects the aircraft to the airport terminal. He had a patent on that. After he died, his wife called me and said he also had a patent on a wheelchair that could go up and downstairs. She said that he really liked me, and she wanted me to have a patent. I told her that the patent was worth a lot of money, and she should take it to a good patent attorney who could find her a buyer. I was happy to find out that he liked me so much.

My Wife

Wright-Patterson had regular Saturday night dances for all the people that worked at Wright-Patterson, both military and civilian. I went to the dance, and I noticed one really great-looking lady that was getting a lot of attention, and I finally got a dance with her, and I got her telephone number and started dating her. My tour of duty was completed in two weeks, and I had accepted a new General Electric management position for military and commercial aircraft for electrical systems at Waynesboro, Virginia. This was four hundred miles from Dayton, Ohio, so I asked her to meet me every weekend halfway in between. One of the great abilities that God gave me was to be able to think “out of the box.” Also, Texas A&M offered to test my IQ, and I accepted. They told me my IQ tested at 142, but it was higher because the norm they used had World War II veterans included. I took all that and all my engineering and analytical ability to design and discover everything about the best ways to give the kind of {SX} orgasms a woman would beg for. But you should never make a woman beg unless she is in total agreement. I designed something I named the self-relaxer and kept testing it on my future wife until I was able to give my future wife twenty-five multiple orgasms. When she tried to get out of bed, she could not stand up and fell on a soft rug floor and kept laughing because she was really happy. Early in the relationship with my future wife, I told her about D and J, and I asked if she and I were married, what were her thoughts about me continuing my D and J relationship? She agreed that it would not be a problem. Before I married, I asked both D and J if my marriage would change our relationship, and both said no, and they asked if they could send a wedding gift. I said I would ask my future wife to get her feelings. My future wife said she had no objections for the gift and no objections for me to continue seeing them. (The twins by far gave us the most expensive gift we received for the wedding.) Later, when I proposed to my future wife, I said my proposal had conditions. My future wife had a twelve-year-old son Richard from her previous marriage. The father had abandoned both her and the son when the son was born. Because she and I were four hundred miles apart, I had only seen Richard one time, so I said that she had to move close to where I lived so I could easily drive to see her and her son each weekend, and that would allow me to develop a relationship with Richard before we were married. I said that once I had developed a good relationship with him, I would ask him if he wanted me to marry her, and if he said no, I would need to find out what changes he would want to make it acceptable because he would be living with us, and I would in effect be his father, so we had to consider his feelings and ideas, and that he and I had to have a good relationship. She said that I could develop a relationship with him while we were married and were living together. I said that I withdrew my marriage proposal because that was not acceptable to me. About two weeks later, she said she had a job in Washington, DC, as executive secretary to the secretary of the Air Force. This was a very high position for her, and she had moved to Washington, DC. I started seeing them each weekend but spending most of my time with Richard. Sometime later, he said he wanted me to marry his mom. He was twelve years old at the time, and I told him I would adopt him, but his last name would change, and that was his choice. He chose to keep his last name. I could see the problems between Richard and his mother, and I thought I could solve them with my relationship psychology knowledge and contribute to their lives. I tried unsuccessfully for a number of years, and I realized that I made a

bad decision, and I needed the best outside help available to solve our problems. My wife loved me with all her heart and would do anything for me. I never understood how she could love me so much and love her own son so little. The best, and at that time only, marriage counseling psychologists were at the University of Pennsylvania. I arranged to fly my wife and me from California to the University of Pennsylvania, where we went through five eight-hour days of testing and consultations, which were very thorough, and I was surprised that the founder of the program that had many marriage counseling psychologists was handling our case. He came in with a large stack of papers and said he wanted to describe each of the tests and evaluations they had completed on us so that we could understand their conclusions and recommendations. I concluded that although they had a number of trained marriage psychology counselors, our case was handled by the person that founded the marriage psychologist counseling program. That indicated to me that he thought our marriage has some real problems. He was aware of the long history of problems and fighting between mother and son and that when I came into the relationship, the son would follow all my directions but none of his mother’s directions unless I told him to. He also knew that the mother and son had fights when the two were alone and that when I came home from work, I knew the son would be absolutely truthful to me about what happened in the fights and that she would lie about it. When the marriage psychologist tried to explain the tests and evaluations about our relationship, she would keep interrupting with “What are your recommendations?” After a number of interruptions, he stopped explaining and said that we should consider a divorce. When he said that, she lost control entirely, and she crawled upon his desk and stuck a forefinger an inch from his face and said, “You are supposed to save marriages, not destroy them.” He never moved and looked up at her and calmly said, “Mrs. Sloan, your last outburst is another reason you are incompatible, and we recommend a divorce.” I had no choice but to return to California with her and start and complete the divorce. When her son Richard was approaching eighteen, he said he would move out when he turned eighteen and never see her again. (He did see her a number of times, trying to help her, but then she would cause problems in his

life.) I was sworn to secrecy about his address. She chose to live in a senior apartment complex, which had medical help. Later, my ex-wife died from an overdose of morphine.

Richard (Son of My Wife from Previous Marriage)

When Richard was young, I wanted to develop a good relationship with him. At that time, he was fascinated by dolphins. So I called the dolphin expert at UCLA to show Richard his work with dolphins. He showed Richard how the dolphins communicated with each other and showed us in the pool of dolphins. At that time, I told Richard if he enrolled at UCLA, he could study dolphins there, and I would pay his UCLA expenses. He chose to go to work on his property instead. When my wife and I were divorced, Richard left her and went to his property, where he continued to work on his house. He had trouble, and they were going to foreclose on his mortgage. So I paid it off completely, and he totally owned it, and no one could take it away. He was happy in the house he built, complete with a machine shop on a thick concrete first floor and living area on the second floor. He and I had and continue to have a great relationship. It is almost unbelievable what he has learned on his own and how much value he has created on his land, house, machine shop, electrical system, water well, and road system. He had the same knowledge as a person with a general engineering contractor’s license would have.

Al-Mann and the Solar Cell

I helped some people in a major way, like the one man and three ladies that I put on a path to becoming millionaires. The one man I helped was Al Mann, who was working in solid-state physics at Technicolor, the color motion picture corporation. It is interesting how we met. I was with General Electric, selling aircraft electrical systems to airframe companies like Lockheed, Boeing Hughes Aircraft, and others. I often flew from Waynesboro, Virginia (General Electric) to the West Coast and stayed at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (the businessman’s hotel in Hollywood, California, which had dancing on the first floor). I met a lady there that I liked and started seeing her every time I went to California. One time when I was with her, she told me she had a friend that needed help. She said she had told him that I was working for General Electric, and he asked her if she would introduce him to me. She asked me if I would meet him. I said yes, and she introduced me to him at a party she had for both of us. As soon as Al and I met, we immediately liked each other, and both of us found a place that was private so we could talk. He told me he was working at Technicolor in solid-state physics and had invented a solid-state device that converted sunlight into electricity. Most of the equipment I sold had solid-state devices, but none like this. I told him it was worth a fabulous amount of money (in retrospect, it was far greater than fabulous), and he should obtain the patents on it immediately, including patents on all the modifications. Also, I said not to disclose it to anybody else until he had all the patents in his name by a reliable patent attorney. (He suggested I move out of the hotel and move into his apartment in Hollywood, which I did.) When I came to California, he always wanted me to stay at his apartment, and he would get me a date when I wanted since he knew many of the Hollywood starlets. I laughed at the first date I had. We met at a restaurant, and we were both seated, waiting for a table, and I was looking across at this beautiful starlet and saying to myself, “Say something. Say something.” I had spoken to

audiences that were over a thousand people, but I was at a loss for words. Then I looked straight into her eyes and said, “Are you a virgin?” And she pointed to her nose and said, “Yes, in my left nostril.” After that, we had a great conversation and a great time. The lady that brought Al and me together moved to San Francisco and sent both of us wedding invitations. Al and I were laughing whether we should send her a t present when we knew each had to send a present. After, Al had all the patents in his name and Spectrolab, his corporation, with future production capability of the solar cell. I a call from him when I was at Waynesboro, Virginia, saying he needed a computer and asking my advice whether he should design the computer or buy it. I told him to buy the computer because he needed to spend all his time getting into the production of the solar cell. When Al had tested solar cells with production capability, Al wanted me to leave General Electric and offered me a partnership if I would him and work with him. That was a tempting offer because I knew the solar cell was worth many, many millions of dollars. (In retrospect, that was a fraction of what it was worth.) I thanked him and told him that I wanted to earn money on my own even though I knew it would be less, but I would still continue to help him. He knew to NASA. I suggested he also DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Agency, General Electric Global Research, and Hughes Aircraft. I told him that when the solar cell became known, organizations would be ing him. When I was an executive at General Electric in Waynesboro, Virginia, I couldn’t how many telephone calls giving advice that I answered from Al, most all in the middle of the night at Waynesboro, Virginia, because Al’s daytime in Los Angeles was my nighttime at Waynesboro. I enjoyed helping him and talking to him. We were really the closest of friends and saw each other often when he came to Washington, DC, or I went to California.

Great Date for Al Mann

I the time I was in the airport at Washington, DC, when Al was coming to Washington, and I saw this great-looking stewardess with the biggest breasts I had ever seen, and I thought she would be a great date for Al. I started walking over to her, and it took the total of all my willpower to look her directly in the eyes and not look at her breasts. I told her I had a great friend who was very rich, and I was sure the two of them would really like each other. I asked for her telephone number and the best time for him to call her. She gave me that, and I thanked her and told her it took the total of my total willpower to keep my eyes looking straight into her eyes. She laughed and said, “Most guys would say, ‘Hello, how are You?’ And then I would bend over, looking up at them, saying, ‘I am fine. How are you?’” Not long after that, I became an executive at General Electric. Al and I were by far the closest and best of friends, and he seemed to reflect that. Almost always, I developed good friendship relationships with my customers, with my manager, and with the people I managed both in General Electric and in the US Air Force and other corporations I was CEO. (My PhD in relationship psychology knowledge was a real help for this.) It is hard to describe the kind of friendship that I had with Al. It was like God had given me the ideal person to be a friend with, and Al seemed to feel the same about me. I would have done anything he asked, and I am sure he would have done anything I asked. We both cherished the time we had together, whether it was on the phone or together. My only regret is that I was not able to see Al again before he died in 2016. When I found out he had died, I was devastated. After I became an executive at General Electric, I was able to talk to the top scientists at GE Research, where I learned about a time when a cat got into the chemical lab and knocked two beakers down to the floor that mixed together and created what was later named polycarbonate. (Should the cat have the patent for polycarbonate?) I also spoke with Dr. Shafer, inventor of ultrasonics. He told me that he had taken a quartz crystal shaped into a parabola and with electricity focused sound energy into one point. I asked him the application, and he said he could hold a live mouse at the focus point and kill the mouse. However, he said it did not make a good mousetrap because first, you had to catch the mouse. I followed this invention, and the first application was in the Schick (razors). The razor head had slits for the whiskers to protrude to the cutting blade. When the blade head was stamped out, small particles would be left after the stamping that had to be hand removed. With ultrasonics and the sound focused on the

cutting blade in an appropriate liquid, it would remove the small particles without any handwork. Now there are many more applications, including using ultrasonics (ultrasound) to observe the blood clots in my deep vein thrombosis of my (DVT) described on page 7.

Fabulous Offer from GE

Several days before I left for Malibu, California, I received a phone call from General Electric corporation headquarters in New York City, offering me a position as division manager of General Electric’s newly formed space shuttle division. I said I was not interested. He said, “Wait, you haven’t heard the fabulous salary that is being offered.” I said, “If you were offering a million dollars a day, I would still say no.” That stopped the conversation, and I heard what sounded like a gasp. This was a fabulous offer where I would have been reporting directly to the General Electric president in New York City headquarters. I was extremely flattered by this offer and really complimented, but I had made all my plans and had turned down many wonderful offers inside and outside GE, and I wanted to move to California and start my two corporations, UPS Company and Malibu Paradigm. However, I still believe GE is the best corporation, and I truly appreciated and was certainly complimented that GE would offer me such an important position as a division manager. When I graduated from Texas A&M, I regarded General Electric as the most successful company in the USA, and I wanted to work for them to understand how to make my corporations successful. General Electric could not have paid me a higher compliment that I understood how to make my corporation or my corporations successful by offering me a position as division manager of General Electric’s newly formed space shuttle division. After that, I resigned from GE and moved across the country to Malibu, California, to open UPS Company (uninterruptible power systems), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) California corporation, and Malibu Paradigm, a California S corporation.

Part Seven

Finding a Property in Malibu, California

I knew other professionals that moved to California, and what they did was to lease a building for their manufacturing and then rent or buy a house for their residence. I did not want to drive to work on the freeways in California, so I decided to buy land. I wanted the land that had a view of the ocean somewhere between Malibu and Oxnard. So I started on Pacific Coast Highway at Malibu, driving west toward Oxnard, always looking north. I saw a surveyor, and I knew a surveyor usually indicated that the property was to be sold, so I drove north on State Highway 23 to a place where I could hike up to see the surveyor. Since I was an engineer with a surveyor’s license, I could talk in the surveyor’s language. I hiked up to the surveyor, and I said, “Where is your rodman?” He pointed and said, “Over there on his butt.” (Butt is not a surveyor language.) I started a friendly conversation with him, saying, “I received my surveyor’s license when I graduated as an electrical engineer at Texas A&M.” I said, “I am looking for property to buy, and I will never reveal that you told me the name of the real estate agent, but I would appreciate your help.” We talked some more, and he gave me the name of the real estate agency. I went to the real estate agency and asked if they had any land for sale in Malibu. The agent there showed me a number of parcels in Malibu, but I could not find the one where the surveyor was working. I kept pushing for more, but the agent said, “I do not have any more that you could see, but if you can wait, I will have some more.” I asked for more information and found that there were eighteen parcels in the area where I saw the surveyor. I asked the size, and each of the eighteen parcels

was the same size, which was 11.6 acres. I asked the price for each parcel, and he said he would have to get the price. I told the agent that I would contract to buy one or two parcels if I could choose the parcel(s) I wanted to buy. The agent obtained the price, and we both signed a contract and agreement. I had purchased an 11.6-acre parcel in Malibu, California, for the stated price in the contract. Before I signed the contract, I added a condition that if either of the parties refused to complete the contract, that party had to pay all the attorney and court costs for the enforcement of the other party to complete the contract. Later, the seller tried to back out of the contract, and I was really happy I had that provision. The seller was a large contractor that had built many houses and was represented by two attorneys from a large Century City law firm. The lead attorney called me and asked me to come to their luxurious law offices. He discussed the case and said he wanted to help me out by telling me that in all his practice, he had never seen anyone that won a case like this. I stood up and said, “Take a good look at me because I will be the first one!” In court, I proved that the agent had lied to the court, which upset the court, and the court required the seller to pay me more than the total enforcement expenses. It took some time, but I had what I wanted, 1.6 acres of Malibu land with a 180degree view of the Pacific Ocean. My plan was to put both my laboratory and residence on that land so I could walk to work. I designed the five-bedroom, five-bathroom house so that it met the building code at the time and could be converted into condominiums as defined by the California Civil Code. I was the first to build on the land, and there were no houses or apartments for many miles away. The condominiums provided the equivalent of three separate apartments where those that worked for my two California corporations could live. Although I was providing a separate description of the house to be used at the time the house was sold, I needed to make some explanation of some items that were in the house that was unusual for a Malibu house. I had an approved underwriters testing laboratory, which I needed to conduct the business of my two corporations. I also needed 240 volts of three-phase power for testing in the laboratory. That also created a large advantage of having three-phase 240 volts available and allowed all the motors for the pumps to be 240-volt three-phase motors, which are the most reliable and efficient. Since the house was in a

wildfire area, it was extremely important to have a system to fight fires with reliable and efficient motors and pumps. This included the submerged well motor and the three motors for the water pressure needed to fight fires. The fire department required three thousand gallons of water storage to fight fires, but I created a twelve thousand gallons cistern under the rotunda of the house for greater protection. There is also a tenthousand-gallon ozone-sterilized indoor swimming pool, which had a 3HP VS three-phase 240V filter motor and a 3HP VS Jacuzzi water jet motor. The water from the swimming pool could be manually connected to the cistern if it was needed for additional fire protection. When I was deg and building the Malibu house and underwriter’s approved laboratory, I installed a geothermal system that was an extremely efficient system that provided heating and cooling using five four-hundred-feetdeep water wells. I hired the top geothermal system designer. I was surprised when she offered me a position working with her. Also, during this time period, I designed and patented a fluorescent light ballast using both AC and DC voltage.

Part Eight

UPS Company

The reason I needed all the above is that I am a licensed professional electrical engineer in the state of California with an approved test laboratory. The National Electrical Code requires all manufacturers that hire the public must have certification from an approved test laboratory. UPS Company had those approvals from the Los Angeles County Building and Safety Division and from many cities. For example, when Rockwell North American started the manufacturing of the B-1 bomber, they hired three different test laboratories to test and prepare reports of safety testing to the National Electrical Code and Underwriters Laboratory Specifications for all the equipment required to manufacture the B-1 bomber. The county of Los Angeles County Building and Safety Division would not accept any of the three test laboratories test reports. Rockwell then hired UPS Company, which produced all the safety testing reports and obtained approvals just in time for Rockwell to meet its promised production schedules. In addition to the testing for Rockwell, UPS Company did obtain approved testing reports for fifty-three other companies. I had recommendations from all those fifty-three companies that were unfortunately destroyed in the Woolsey Fire. Some time ago, my roommate at Texas A&M that later graduated from West Point came to visit me and stayed two days at the house, and before he left, he said, “You did all right for a boy from Dalhart, Texas,” which made me laugh. My best friend at Texas A&M, Smithy, who was very successful, visited me twice and kept calling my house “San Simeon (Hearst Castle) of the South.” When I semiretired, I had a California professional electrical engineering license, transferable to any other state, a certified public ing (A) license, transferable to any other state, a California general engineering contractor’s license, and a California Series 7 stockbroker’s license (I studied

and ed requirements for this license to confirm to myself that I had proper information to invest in stocks). In order to be approved for the Series 7 stockbroker’s license, I had to be approved and sponsored by a licensed stockbroker in order to take the Series 7 test. I made friends with a stockbroker who questioned me and said he would sponsor me but said I should take the Series 7 review course before I took the Series 7 exam. He said that he sponsored a Harvard University graduate that had failed the exam ten times. I said to let me take the test one time, and if I failed, I would take the review course. He agreed, and I took the exam. A month later, he called and said I failed the exam. I asked for my score. Then he called me and said he made a mistake. He was told that one failed and one ed. He assumed the Harvard University graduate ed, but when he checked again, he found I had ed, and the Harvard University graduate failed again.

Part Nine

Contributions to Others

Anna

I want to thank God for allowing me to meet four wonderful women that have made major contributions to my life, and I have tried to make major contributions to their lives: Anna, Cynthia, Mae, and Merlinda. I met Anna in 1976 when she was thirty-six years old and working as a programmer at the Los Angeles airport. We met at a Palos Verdes Psychologist meet and greet. Everybody there was circulating around, and I saw Anna and walked over and hugged her, and she hugged back. We both went to read from a board that had information on various ways to meet someone. I started a conversation with her, and I could tell she was very intelligent, so I asked for her telephone number and warned her that if she gave it to me, I would ask her out for a date. She gave me her telephone number. Later, I asked her out for a date and what restaurant she wanted to go to. I knew the restaurant she asked for did not have good onion rings, so on the way, I stopped at jack-in-a-box, got good onion rings, and I sneaked them into the restaurant she wanted. She did not say anything to me that night, but now she tells that unflattering story to everyone we have met since. Then I took Anna camping in Death Valley. She survived that, so I told her that I had purchased 11.6 acres of land in Malibu where I was going to build a house, and I took her up to see the land. Jimmy Decker came by and stopped to visit with me. I introduced Jimmy to Anna. Jimmy was a friend and part of the Decker family that once owned all the land north and south of the parcel I purchased. Jimmy was a professional dynamiter and had dynamited Decker road and most of State Highway 23. He could also dynamite huge diamonds by

drilling tiny holes for dynamite that would crack the diamond in just the right places, thereby saving the saw kerf cuts that wastes part of the diamond. After Jimmy visited with us for a while, he said, “I am going to blow some things up.” About thirty minutes later, there was this huge explosion that made Anna jump, yelling, “What was that?” I said that was Jimmy testing his dynamite. Before that, Jimmy had told me about being down at the beach about two in the morning, and he saw some people in a boat bringing boxes in and burying them in the sand. Sometime later, other people came into the beach and dug the boxes up and took them. The next time, after the boxes were buried, Jimmy dug them up, and it was whiskey in the boxes, and he took two bottles, never over two since two would look like a counting error. Two years later, Jimmy called me and said he had been diagnosed with cancer and was dying. I lost a wonderful friend. I helped Anna too. She worked in computers in a low-level job at the Los Angeles airport. I convinced her to go to Pepperdine University and get her master’s degree in business. We had a big argument when she did not want to take the GMAT test, and I insisted she take the test. That put her on a path so that when she finished, she eventually ended up as the top manager of the computer department at Los Angeles airport. Anna helped me design and build the house, and I have to say that I would not be alive today if I had not met Anna because she changed my bad diet to a healthy diet. Anna introduced me to a ed nurse named Cynthia in 1995. They met at a party through a friend. Cynthia lived in LA, and according to Anna, she was having a lot of respiratory problems living in LA due to air pollution. So Anna invited her to Malibu on weekends to see if the clean air in Malibu would help her relieve some of her respiratory problems, and it did.

Cynthia

One time when Anna stopped breathing, Cynthia saved Anna’s life by pulling her to the floor and giving her R and stayed with her until the paramedics

arrived. I recognized that Cynthia was very intelligent and was an excellent nurse and had experience in the operating room and GI lab, so Anna and I invited her to move in with us. Anna and I both realized that Cynthia could help by giving us nursing advice regarding our health issues or by driving us to the doctor when we needed it. Since Cynthia not only worked in very stressful departments in a hospital but she was also commuting an hour drive from Malibu (which was so stressful due to traffic), I decided to help her out by providing all the money necessary for working capital and expenses to incorporate RN4NURSES in California as a registry providing operating room and GI lab nurses to hospitals in California, which I did. Cynthia had to use her experience to select and schedule really good nurses. I used my experience to work with the hospital and develop contracts between the hospital and RN4NURSES. Cynthia also had a car and retirement plan paid by RN4NURSES, and I was the ant for RN4NURSES, but I did not charge for my time. I did not take any profits from RN4NURSES. I let all the profits go to the nurses. I only recovered my initial investment in working capital and expenses. I really laughed when somebody told Cynthia that I must be making a lot of profit with RN4NURSES, and Cynthia shocked him when she said that all profits went back to the nurses.

Mae

In March of 2003, I met Mae at a dance, and I immediately recognized she was very intelligent. She was thirty-eight years old, had an ing degree, and a master’s degree in business istration. I knew that Mae would be very helpful in RN4NURSES, but I had to get her to move from Los Angeles to Malibu. At the time, she traveled by train to her work. I asked her how much she could pay monthly for a car, and I negotiated a Toyota dealer’s price down, and I paid him the difference between the selling price and the factory price so that Mae only had to pay monthly the amount that she could afford to pay. My next step was to draw a circle around where I was living and my corporations were located so that she had a reasonable distance to drive to work. I told Mae that I would like for her to live at Malibu, and she needed to get a job

in that circle. I knew that previously she had worked for companies that had less than twenty people. Mae had great credentials with a master’s degree in business (MBA), a major in ing, and was a certified public ant. She graduated cum laude in college and magna cum laude in MBA. I convinced her that with those credentials, she should be working for a large corporation. When she had an offer from the Girl Scouts and one from Securitas, I convinced her to take the Securitas offer, which was a large corporation.

Merlinda

I met Merlinda when she first arrived in California from the Philippines. She had no job, but she had been a teacher. I found her a vocational school and suggested that I would pay for her to become a licensed vocational nurse if she would pay me back when she started working as an LVN, which she did. She agreed, and I have had a great relationship with her and her great daughter, who became a ed nurse.

Part Ten

Thankful For

Whatever success I have had, I have many people to thank for that success. I thank the eighteen-year-old lady that read lips in high school that allowed me to study many marriages and which started my interest in studying relationship psychology. (I am now sixteen-credit hours at UCLA from a PhD in relationship psychology.) I thank myself for finding the desiderata (Latin—meaning desired things). See enclosed copy which has given me and others serenity many times. I thank myself for finding two pictures that have been with me a long time and always in a place where I see them every day—one shows two seagulls flying way out over the ocean with no land in sight and with the caption “They can because they think they can” (Virgil). The second picture is of the moon peeking through a forest of trees with the caption, “Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true” (Cardinal LJ Suenens). I lived most of my life by the philosophy of those two captions, and I thank them. I thank my dad for being honest and giving me the values of honesty, a good education at Texas A&M, and for teaching me to drive at five years old and obtain a driver’s license at fourteen years old which taught me I was able to accept a challenge and accomplish it. (They can because they think they can.) I thank Texas A&M for reinforcing these values with “An Aggie does not lie, cheat, or steal, or associate with those who do” and for the leadership principles I learned. I thank the Aggie that gave me the address of D and J in Chicago because I learned a lot about women from them and had such a beautiful over twenty-year love relationship with both. I thank myself for picking beautiful places to evaluate me and questioning if I

am doing the right thing in my life. Those evaluations have always set or reset my direction. And when I started making money, I set up a goal to make a million dollars. I made the first million dollars, and I thought I don’t feel any different from what I did before I made the million. I realized that making money could be a treill in which you keep repeating making money by setting the next goal higher. I realized that happiness could not come from the destination. It must come from the trip along the way. Then I decided how much money I really needed, and I made that amount and refocused on helping others. I turned my attention to finding love and beauty of thought and feelings, following Aunt Ruby’s “There is a destiny that makes us all brothers” concepts that made me happier because helping people made me feel good and happy, and I will still do that for the rest of my life. I tried to live a good and productive life, following the Bible, which I believe is the Word of God. I had to live in many places. In Genesis 2:18, it says, “Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone, I will make him a helper for him,’” and that helper was a woman. When I lived in a new place, it was not always possible that I could bring my helper in the last place to the new place, and for a number of times, I felt the need for a new helper and found her. I thank God for D and J that I found in my junior year at Texas A&M, and that provided two helpers for the next twenty years, where I learned so much about women, love, love relationships, and sexuality. I thank God now that I have those I love and love me and who have agreed to stay with me until I go see God, at which time I will have done my best in providing for them in the future. I know those relationships generate such wonderful feelings of love each day and night, and I certainly thank God for their existence, His existence, and for the love and happiness from them that I feel every day and night. At that time I see you, I feel sure that I can say, “I have lived a wonderful and happy fulfilled life.” And I thank you for that.

Woolsey Fire

I purchased 11.6 acres of Malibu land, and I had to file a lis pendens to hold the land that Los Angeles county wanted until I could file my 1.6-mile easement as a driveway to obtain my building permit, and I won the subsequent court case. The Los Angeles fire department required three thousand gallons of water to fight fires. I did not think that was enough, so I built a twelve-thousand-gallon cistern under the house and had a ten-thousand-gallon indoor swimming pool that could be manually connected to fight fires. I checked fire history and found that most fires started from embers on the roof. I had parapets installed around the flat roof that would allow the roof to maintain three inches of water to extinguish the embers that fell on the flat roof. The combined design of my residence and my business in buildings in a wildfire area caused the Los Angeles fire department and USAA wildfire experts to say it was the best design they have seen. That building also met the Los Angeles condominium requirements for those that work for my California corporations since, at the time, there were no places to live for those that worked in my corporations. While this was a good design for previous fires and was tested, it failed during the November 9, 2018, Woolsey Fire, which was an unusually different fire that traveled at higher wind speeds above eighty miles per hour with many more embers. Everything was higher than the previous fires. Water was three inches on the roof, and the ground was wet all around, and we were running out of water, so I went to manually connect the ten-thousand-gallon swimming pool water for us to use. When making the connection, I did not know that the fire had started inside the house, and I was breathing smoke. I knew I was ing out when I heard Mae Agawin call, “Hi.” I tried my loudest reply, and she heard me. She came and splashed swimming pool water on my face to revive me. Then she said, “The house is on fire. We have to leave,” and she took me to Anna’s car. Mae saved my life and ignored the peril to her life, for which I truly thank her. Anna and I

left first, followed by Mae and Cynthia driving toward Pacific Coast Highway down Decker Edison Road. Anna and I saw a twelve-inch-diameter rock in the middle of the road, and I said, “No choice. Go over the rock since it had to be broken up for all four of us.” (If that rock caused Anna’s car to stop, we could have the car behind us, push Anna’s car off the road into the canyon to get to Pacific Coast Highway.) When Anna and I were at Pacific Coast Highway, I started praying, “God, please save Mae and Cynthia,” then Mae was safe, and I prayed, “God, please save Cynthia.” When Cynthia was safe, I was thanking God with happy tears flowing down my cheeks because God saved all my family’s lives in the Woolsey Fire. I am old enough now that I can look back at my life and evaluate it like I did when I sat on the beach looking out over the Gulf of Mexico. Prior to the Woolsey Fire, I was in a home and business that overlooked a 180-degree view of the Pacific Ocean; however, on November 9, 2018, all were destroyed by the Woolsey Fire. The Woolsey Fire that burned 98,362 acres of land, including the Malibu Paradigm Laboratory that was approved to test for underwriter’s lab approvals and was at buildings at 4000, 4004, and 4008 Decker Canyon Road.

Four people were fighting this fire with twelve thousand gallons of water in a cistern and ten thousand gallons of water in an indoor swimming pool that could manually be connected. (The fire department only required three thousand gallons of water.) More water was needed, and the CEO was manually connecting the ten thousand gallons of water from the swimming pool, not realizing the house was on fire, and he was suffering from smoke inhalation. Mae Agawin, ignoring her own peril, was searching for him and found him almost ing out by the swimming pool, revived him by pouring water on his face, and got him in a rescue vehicle, thereby saving the life of Hiram C. Funny Stories (Jokes)

There are a number of reasons that jokes can help in building relationships, both personal and in business. The other reason is to make the readers laugh. When I entered Texas A&M, I immediately found tea sippers. Texas Longhorns and Texas Aggies were real football rivals. One joke that always made the ladies laugh was about a tea sipper and Aggie after both had graduated and were living in California. The tea sipper noticed that the Aggie would date the ladies and was always scoring while he hardly ever scored. The tea sipper talked to the Aggie and told him that he had trouble scoring and asked the Aggie’s help. The Aggie said, “First, you have to know that this is going to cost you some real money. Second, find the most expensive restaurant in the city and ask the lady if she would you for dinner at that restaurant. Then buy her the most expensive meal on the menu. Next, you have to prepare for this ahead of time. Find a nice private place to park that has a nice view. After dinner, go to your private place, park, put your arm around her, kiss her, and whisper in her ear, ‘I love you. I love you,’ while you rub her stomach.” The tea sipper said, “Is that all there is to it?” And the Aggie said, “That’s all there is to it.” So the tea sipper had found a perfect place at the beach with a beautiful view of the moon. After dinner, he parked, viewing the moon, put his arm around her, kissed her, and whispered in her ear, “I love you. I love you,” while rubbing her stomach. She started moving her hips back and forth, saying, “Lower, lower.” So the tea sipper in a much-lowered voice said, “I love you. I love you!”

***** I have lived in several cold climates, which brings to mind the joke about the guy and a girl got a flat tire one blizzardy night. The guy went out to change the tire, but he had no gloves, and after a while, his hands started to get blue, so he came back into the car. “Put your hands between my thighs, and that’ll warm them up,” invited the girl. He did, and pretty soon, his hands recovered, and he went back outside. After a while longer, his hands got cold again, and once again, she suggested that he warmed them between her thighs. He did so and returned to finish putting on the spare. When he came back into the car triumphant, she looked at him and asked, “Aren’t your ears cold?” ***** Then there was the husband and wife that were having endless arguments, and the wife started packing her suitcase. The husband asked where she was going, and she said, “I just heard that Alaska had a shortage of women, and a woman could make a lot of money in Alaska.” The husband started packing his suitcase, and she said, “Where are you going?” And he said, “Alaska. I want to see how you can live on forty dollars per month.” ***** There was a short man that was dating a tall woman. She asked him if that was a problem. He said, “When I am nose to nose, my toes are in it. When I am toes to toes, my nose is in it, and when I am right on, I got nobody to talk to.” ***** Then there was the man that went to the doctor and said, “Doctor, I have a shortterm memory problem.” The doctor leaned back in his chair and said, “Tell me, how long have you had this problem?”

The man said, “What problem?” ***** I liked the story about the two boys that went into a pharmacy, and the older boy selected a package of tampons to buy. He took them to the counter, and the clerk asked the older boy why he wanted them. The older boy said they were not for him. They were for his younger brother because the TV said that if you wore these, you could swim and ride a bicycle, and his brother could not do either one.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste. what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, be on good with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly. Listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant. They, too, have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons. They are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself to others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your career, however humble. It is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affair, for the world is full of trickery. I wrote you a letter right after you came down the escalator and announced you were running for president, and I said I was praying for you to win the election for president and for Texas A&M to win the national championship. When it was forecast that Hilary Clinton might win as president, I asked God to forget about Texas A&M and let you win as president. I am ninety-one years old now, have some medical problems, and I was proud to serve in the US Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, deg electrical systems for aircraft when President Eisenhower was increasing the Air Force. The electrical system is a flight-safety item, which means the aircraft will crash if the electrical system fails. I have been writing a book about my life, and I also include some corruption problems, particularly in the large procurements of the US Air Force, which I think would be of interest to you. I am writing directly to you to avoid Lt. Col. Vindman or other Obama holdovers from trashing my letter before you see it. I cannot believe what some men or women will do for money. Electrical systems can be bids, can be over several multimillion dollars, and my decision could affect their selection. Please read pages 41 and 42, where I had to refuse an order from a military major. I truly believe you will become the best president this great nation has ever had. I have tried to avoid revealing any classified information, but would you please have the attached book checked for that and advise. I want to publish my book as quickly as possible. Thus, I would appreciate it if the said book is reviewed immediately.

About the Author

Hiram Sloan was born in 1929 in the midst of the depression in Amarillo, Texas. He was from an early age, able to succeed using his intelligence and unique perspective on people to achieve success in business and life. He graduated from Texas A&M as an electrical engineer. Using his ingenuity, he was hired by GE as a sales engineer and rose to be an executive. One of his proudest accomplishments was to design all the electrical systems on many Air Force planes during his time in the service. He then developed his own UL testing labs used by many to certify equipment for use. But his proudest achievements were in developing lifelong friendships with both men and women. He tried to work with them to solve their problems and develop them to their full potential. He did this until he died at the age of ninety, knowing that he had accomplished all he wanted to do in life both professionally and personally and doing it in his unique way.
