Chapter One

Daisy brushed her hair back as she looked out from the front door of her parents’ farmhouse. They were away for the week on a well-earned break. Ever since she could , they’d worked on the farm from dawn till dusk, day in, day out. In fact, it was what had made her so determined to move away in the first place. She glanced up the path that led up to the farmhouse and saw a man's form coming towards her. She cocked her head to the side, not quite knowing who it could be that was arriving, nor what they wanted. Other than the farm hands, no one else had bothered her since she'd arrived to look after the farm. Just the way she liked it. In the city, she worked for a bank, and it was all go all of the time, which didn't give her much time to reset. Nor to shift. And if she couldn't shift, then she tended to go a little crazy. Which was pretty normal for shifters as far as she knew. She'd been hoping to shift now, it was why she'd come outside in the first place, but now that didn't seem to be a possibility; especially if the man coming towards her actually needed something. Hopefully, he'd just need to drop off a parcel, or some feed for the chickens, she'd noticed they were getting low. As he got closer, she took in the sight of him. He was tall, but not overly broad, with messy pale brown hair. He wasn't carrying anything, so probably wasn't delivering anything after all, and there must be another reason for his visit. The man waved, and Daisy frowned. She didn't know anyone around here. Or at least, she hadn't known anyone here since she'd left ten years ago. And even before that, she hadn't had many friends. Unless she counted Brad, who'd lived two farms over with his family. They'd been close as small children, but had grown apart in their teens, and had lost touch when Daisy had moved away for university. Every now and again, she found herself thinking about Brad, and what he was doing now. Once or twice, normally after she'd been drinking, she even picked up the phone thinking that

she could call him; but she'd stopped herself just in time. After all, what on earth could she say to the person that she hadn't spoken to in years? The man got closer still, and Daisy's breath caught. She told herself that she was imagining things, it couldn't possibly be Brad. And yet, the way he was walking, and the cheeky grin she could already make out, made it almost impossible to deny that it was her childhood friend. "So it is you," he said as he reached her, the grin getting wider as he looked her up and down. Daisy bit the inside of her cheek, stopping herself from doing her own appraisal. Sadly, it was still frowned upon for women to act the way men did. "Brad?" She knew it was him, that much was undeniable, but she still felt the need to check. He could be a figment of her imagination for all she knew. "The one and only." He leant against the front porch. "What are you doing here?" she asked. "Old Tom said you were back looking after your Dad's farm. I just had to come see if it was true," he told her. Daisy raised an eyebrow. "But, why?" "Because you're Daisy Williams. We spent almost every day together for three years. It's not like that's easily forgotten," he said, an odd expression crossing his face. "That was over fifteen years ago, Brad," she reminded him. "True. But then, I spent another five years lusting after you." "No, you didn't," she shot back, not believing him. She'd fancied him when they were both thirteen, but that was to be expected considering she'd just become aware of boys and he was her only male friend. Plus, they used to visit the small lake that was on her father's land, and strip down to their underwear for a swim. In summer, naturally. The British weather didn't allow for swimming in small lakes at any other time.

"I did. You were the most beautiful girl in school," he said earnestly. "I think that went to Sophie Wallis," she replied, thinking back to the perfect blonde who seemed to be the head of everything; even cheer leading, and that hadn't even been a big thing in the UK while she was at school. It seemed to be growing in popularity now, but back then it wasn't heard of. "Sophie has nothing on you." “Has?" She was suddenly very interested in what his answer would be. "Well yes. She's still here. Married Freddie, not that anyone saw that coming," he said with a slight smile on his lips. She smiled back, knowing exactly what he meant. Sophie and Freddie had dated on and off since they were about four. Not seriously then, but it had grown into as they'd got older. "Are they still running as hot and cold as they used to?" she asked. Thinking back to the massive arguments that she used to witness from time to time. "I believe so, but they also have three kids, and another on the way." "Wow." It was difficult to know what she should be saying about the people she used to share class with. If she ed correctly, and she did, then she'd even dated Freddie when they were both sixteen and he'd just broken up with Sophie for the hundredth time. If possible, it had made her even less popular with the other girls at school. "So, how've you been?" he asked, a more serious look crossing his face. "Fine, you?" "Good," he answered, before starting to speak again and stopping himself short. "Do I get more than good?" she asked, trying to add a teasing note in her voice. "Do I get more than fine?" "Sorry, I'm not really used to talking to people about my life. It's just busy you know." She shrugged. It would take too much time to explain everything to him.

“Not really, I took over Dad’s shop when he retired,” he said, and even after years apart, she could tell that he wasn’t happy about that. When they were younger, she'd have called him out on it, and asked him why he wasn't doing something that he was more suited to, but now, she didn’t think she knew him well enough for that. "Do you have a girlfriend?" she asked, instantly cursing herself. Why on earth would she ask that? It made it seem like she was interested in him. Which she most certainly wasn't. But even as she thought it, she found herself looking him up and down and considering what it might be like to date him. Or even just to spend the night with him. There was something to be said for a hot sweaty night between the sheets with someone attractive, and there was no doubt that he was that. "Who wants to know?" he asked with a smirk. "Never mind." She met his gaze, and he held it, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "No, I don't have a girlfriend. How can I, when my heart's been taken for years." She gave him a funny look. Confused by what he was on about. He'd never had a girlfriend for more than two weeks at a time when we were younger, she highly doubted that he'd been any different while she'd been gone. "Shame, you always were in high demand," she said. "Still am," he muttered under his breath and she wasn't entirely convinced that she was supposed to have heard. It was probably only her enhanced hearing that allowed her to. "Go to dinner with me?" "What?" she asked, taken aback. "Dinner. You. Me. Probably a candle and some romantic music?" "But why?" "Because I've wanted to take you out for years, Daisy. Now you're here, I can hardly ignore the opportunity," he said earnestly. She thought about it for a few minutes more, though she wasn't sure why she bothered; her first instinct was to say yes, and sometimes, first instincts were everything.

"Okay," she answered, and Brad's grin grew to a ridiculous size.

Chapter Two

Brad straightened his shirt and ran a hand through his hair. He was finally going on a date with Daisy, and he didn't want to mess it up. He'd known she was special from the day they'd met. They'd only been children, sure, but his Dad had already told him about mates, and how one day he'd find his own. And Daisy was it, he was sure. It was why he'd never had a steady girlfriend through school, or college for that matter. There was no point in faking it with the others for too long when he already knew who his life partner was. He stepped out of his front door, glad that his Dad was out at his weekly poker game and wasn't around to see his son leave; otherwise there'd be questions that Brad didn't want to answer quite yet. He strode down the path and towards Daisy's childhood farmhouse. He wouldn't it it to anyone, but he'd made this trip almost every day since he was five years old. It was one of the advantages of being a shifter; even at a young age, his parents had let him wander about unsupervised. After all, if anything spooked him, he could shift into animal form and run home far quicker than anything could catch him. Or rather, hop home. He had to it it was a little bit creepy to go up to Daisy's house every day, but he wanted to make sure that she was safe. It was silly really. No one ever seemed to get hurt around the farms. Unless it was because they'd fallen off a tractor or something. The moment he reached her door, and raised his clenched fix to knock on the solid wood, it swung open, revealing Daisy in a stunning red dress, which brought out the blue in her eyes and the chestnut brown colour of her long slightly curly hair. She'd been pretty as a child, there'd never been any doubt of that, but as a woman, she was downright gorgeous. "You look beautiful," he said, taking her in again, because he could, and part of

him felt that he had to. It was the same part of him that knew she was his mate, and that in all likelihood, that she was a shifter too. All he had to do was convince her of that. "You don't look too bad yourself," she teased back, a slight glint of mischief in her eyes. "Thank you," he said, trying to refrain from leaning in and kissing her. This was the start of the date, he didn't want to ruin things by making a move too soon. Though he did want her in his arms by the end of the night. Preferably without the dress, as pretty as it was. "So, where are we going?" she asked as she locked up her front door. He didn't like that she had to turn away from him to do it, but he couldn't go all out alpha on her just yet. He didn't even suppose he could go all out alpha anyway. The most he could do was shift into a hare, which wasn't exactly the most manly of creatures. "I thought I'd take you to the new Italian place in town. Everyone keeps raving about it, but I've never had anyone I wanted to take." He shrugged. Really, he hadn't ever felt right about going to the Italian. The atmosphere was a romantic one, and he just hadn't wanted to take anyone but Daisy there. "Sounds nice." She slipped her hand into the crook of his arm when he offered it. The weight of her touch heated Brad's blood, and that was without her even trying. He'd probably self-combust if she touched him in bed. They walked into the small-town centre. Though town was a generous word for the one street that made up the business hub of the surrounding farms. Other than the Italian, there was a pub and a post office, but it was all that the people around here needed. Especially given that they had a big city just half an hour away by train. They talked of inconsequential things. It turned out that they were both into the same new TV show that was almost starting to gain a cult like following, and that was only the tip of the iceberg of what they had in common. Considering they hadn't spent much time together since they were fourteen, they still shared similar tastes in music, food and books. The one thing they seemed to disagree

on was about what to drink, though Brad was more than happy to it defeat when it came to the wine choice for dinner, anything that would make her smile would be good for him. Mostly because smiling lit up her face. It wasn't merely a physical thing either, it was bone deep, like joy poured out of her. He ed the same thing from childhood. Daisy had always had an infectious smile, not to mention an infectious laugh. One moment of her laughter, and Brad would find himself doubled over too, even if it wasn’t something he found remotely funny.

Chapter Three

Daisy enjoyed herself with Brad. While getting ready earlier, she'd worried that the ease they'd shared during childhood couldn't be reclaimed or that too many years had ed without them speaking properly. But that hadn't been the case at all. Their dinner had been delicious, and the easy conversation between them had been even better. The flirting was almost too much for Daisy though. She'd always felt a connection to Brad, like there was something there that she knew couldn't be. It may sound contradictory, even inside Daisy's head, but she was destined for another shifter, or maybe even for some other kind of paranormal, but certainly not a human like Brad. It was one of things that had helped her decide that she needed to distance herself from him. They walked back to her house in complete silence, the tension thrumming between them in a way that she'd never experienced with anyone before. Inwardly, she began debating whether or not she wanted to invite him in. She wasn't normally a jump into bed on the first date kind of girl, but then, this was Brad, and she'd known him forever, so she wasn't even sure it counted as jumping into bed at all. Maybe she was just deluding herself, but it would definitely be fun. A tell-tale tingle started in Daisy's fingers. She frowned to herself, hoping that Brad wouldn't notice. Now wasn't the time for a shift, especially when her tiny animal form would mean it would look she’d disappeared into the night without saying a word. Hell, it'd be more than disappearing into the night, it would make it look like she'd magically disappeared. Though she guessed she would have done considering that shifting had to be magic of some kind. "Thank you for saying yes to tonight," Brad said, breaking the silence, and the desire to shift. Well, not breaking the desire, just postponing it. But she knew that she'd need to change forms the minute she was alone. "Thank you for asking. I've had a lovely time," Daisy responded, a genuine smile tugging at her lips.

"I almost don't want to walk you the rest of the way home." "Well that's not very gentlemanly," she replied, pouting slightly to back up her point. "Not like that," he responded quickly, a note of defensiveness in his tone. "I just meant that I didn't want this night to end," he added, turning back towards her so that they were facing each other while they walked. It was perfectly safe, there was no traffic at this time of night, and they weren't moving fast enough to risk tripping and hurting themselves. Daisy tried to stop the laughter that was bubbling up inside her, but it burst forth. Brad ed her, once he'd realised that she'd only been teasing before, and they had to stop walking. A stitch began to form in Daisy's side, but even that wasn't enough to be able to stop her. She was enjoying this moment between them too much. "Can I kiss you?" Brad asked once their laughter had run its course. He sounded hesitant, as if he wasn't sure that she'd say yes. Which was ridiculous, she'd been throwing him the right signals all night, biting her lower lip, touching his arm. She hadn't even been fully aware that she was doing it, but had caught herself too many times to be able to deny it. She nodded once, not sure that she'd be able to stop herself from saying too much if she spoke. Brad wasted no time, and he closed the gap between them, slipping a hand around her waist. The hand he placed on her lower back was strangely reassuring, and he tugged her towards him gently, causing their bodies to touch, and sparks to ignite behind Daisy's eyes. Brad's hand threaded through her hair and he tilted his head, his lips moving closer still. Fed up with the waiting, Daisy gripped onto the collar of Brad's shirt and dragged him the rest of the way to her, crushing her lips against his and kissing him the way that she wanted to be kissed. And it was nothing like any kiss that she'd ever received before. There was something about the scent of Brad, and the feel of his lips against hers that felt right. Far more than it had with any of the other guys she'd tried to date. Pulling him closer still, Daisy threaded her hand into his hair, and Brad responded by kissing her deeper. His hands roved ever so slightly over her arms

and back, though they never strayed quite as far as she wanted them to. Continuing this; and going further, seemed like something she truly wanted to do, but the imminent urge to shift was still there, and Daisy worried that it would happen whether she wanted it to or not. Reluctantly, she broke the kiss, leaving the two of them staring at each other while still entwined. Part of her was screaming that she should still be kissing him, and yet, another part of her was desperate to get away. She needed to fly and it was becoming more and more imperative that she did with each ing second. Untangling herself from Brad's arms, she took a couple of steps back. He looked forlorn as he stood there, looking at her with a questioning look in his eyes. "I'm sorry," she whispered, before turning tail and running away from him, back in the direction of home and her safe space. When she was out of Brad's line of sight, she gave in to the urge to shift. She shrunk rapidly, in a transformation that she'd always felt was surprisingly painless given the size of a human compared to the size of a ladybird. Opening her red and black spotted wings, she buzzed into the night, appreciating the cold night air as it buffeted against her body. There was a freedom in flying anyway; but tonight, for some reason that was still unbeknown to her, she needed it even more than usual.

Chapter Four

Brad ran the direction that Daisy had disappeared in as fast as he could, but she wasn't there. He frowned, looking down at the ground and trying to make out if there were any animal prints on the ground. He didn't know what kind of shifter she was, but he was now leaning towards something with wings given the lack of markings on the floor. At least the fact he couldn't see anything in the sky ruled out the possibility of her being a dragon; he'd never live that one down with his brothers if they found out his mate was a dragon. Because she was his mate. The evening had made it even clearer than it had been when they'd been children. Probably because this time, they were old enough to act on the fantasies that were going through his head. He supposed that had been at sixteen too, but there was something to do with shifter magic that blocked them sometimes. Probably a way of stopping there being too many early pregnancies: population control at its finest. Not knowing what else to do, Brad made his way back towards Daisy's farmhouse; she had to go back there after all, regardless of what form she was in. Maybe he'd even catch her shifting back and be able to broach the awkward "so you're a shifter" moment that he'd been dreading for years. He knocked on her door the moment her arrived, thankful that he was in peek physical form, so wasn't out of breath in the slightest. He could have shifted himself, but he thought that would end any chance of a fun tumble in the sheets tonight. Hares weren't exactly the sexiest of creatures. Not for the first time, Brad found himself wishing that he was something sexier, like a bear or a panther. Rather than something that looked like it could be someone's pet. The door swung open, revealing a fully clothed but ruffled Daisy, suggesting that he'd been right in thinking that she'd shifted to get away from him. If getaway was quite the right word. "Sorry about that," she said, giving him a killer smile that almost made him forget about her running away.

"How did you get here so fast?" he asked, despite knowing the reason why. He hadn't even meant to ask, it had just slipped out, and he wondered if he'd get her to it what she was without much further ado. Instead of answering, Daisy flung herself into his arms and pressed her lips against his, stealing his breath and heating his blood. Brad knew that he should probably move away and not do this until she knew what was actually going on between them. But he also didn't want to stop, and the more instinctual side of him was winning out at this moment in time. Daisy was his mate after all, this kind of thing was right.

Chapter Five

She didn't know what had come over her when she'd opened the door, but something had triggered inside her the moment she'd seen Brad. Well, that was a lie. It had been triggered long before that, likely when he'd said the first word to her earlier. She pulled him in by his shirt collar, and slammed the door shut, not paying any attention to what she was doing and feeling thankful for this being her childhood home; she could move around it with her eyes closed if she had to. At least her childhood room had long since been redecorated. She was sure that it wouldn't actually matter to Brad; he'd seen her room plenty of times after all. But doing what she was planning to in front of her dolls and Peter Rabbit wallpaper wouldn't have been fun. As it was, the room was still girlier than she was, but she'd just have to live with that. She broke their kiss, leaving both of them breathing heavily and unable to say a word. She looked up at Brad through her eyelashes and was relieved to find a heated look in his eyes; he clearly wanted this as much as she did. All she had to do now was take advantage of it. Dragging him the rest of the way into her room, she deftly unbuttoned his shirt, letting it fall to the floor. She just hoped that the rest of his clothes would follow suit pretty quickly. Brad's hands groped with the bottom of her dress, pulling it over her head and sending it in the same direction as his shirt. She was left there in just her underwear, but didn't feel as exposed as she maybe should. She unbuckled Brad's belt, whipping it out through the loops in one ferocious movement. But Brad was having none of it, and finished undressing himself while backing Daisy up against the bed. She wasn't about to it quite how many teenage fantasies were about to be lived out, but she hoped it lived up to expectations. She lay back on the bed, and watched as Brad crawled up her body, his intent

written in his eyes. She arched her back, pushing herself against Brad's body, enjoying the feel of skin against skin. He made short work of their underwear, leaving them both completely naked, and panting at the exertion. With a wicked gleam in his eye, Brad trailed his hand gently up her thigh, his eyes meeting hers and asking for permission. "Yes," she half-moaned, enjoying the tension that was already building inside her. It wasn't going to take much to set her off at this rate. "Daisy," he moaned into her ear. "Please, now." She wasn't sure that she could take anymore with exploding, and she wanted him to be in her when that happened. "You sure?" he asked through baited breaths. "Yes," she answered, moving her hand between their bodies so she should guide him into her. The moment their bodies fused was like nothing she'd ever experienced before. She tried to hold off, but her body wasn't having any of it, and she arched into him as pleasure crashed through her. A sharp pain at her neck startled her for a moment, but it was soon overtaken by the intense pleasure she was feeling. As she came down from her high, she began kissing Brad's neck, nibbling at times and appreciating the groans that came from him as a result. The tension was building within her again, and an odd sensation in her mouth surprised her; even more so when she bit into Brad's neck and drew blood. Instead of freaking out, he just moaned, and she drank it down as her second release approached. This time, Brad came with her, and they rode it out together, before collapsing down onto the bed in a sweaty heap.

Chapter Six

Daisy sat bolt upright. "You're a shifter," she blurted out, and he couldn't decide if she sounded more surprised or relieved. "So are you," he answered calmly. "How do you even know that?" she spluttered. "Same way you do, you just bit me. Plus, I've known for years." "Years?" she whispered, almost awestruck. Taking advantage of her distraction, Brad reached out and drew a soothing hand down her back. Daisy shivered, but didn't pull away, so he was going to count it as a win. "Yep. Dad taught me what to look out for, and you had all the hallmarks growing up. Plus, you disappeared without a trace back there. Little bit of a give-away," he said, smiling at her reassuringly in the hope that she'd just accept what he was saying. She hadn't even gotten to the most shocking bit yet. He'd have thought the fact that they accidentally mated would be a bigger deal than him knowing she was a shifter. "You bit me." "And you bit me," he replied. "But that means -" "Yep." "Really?" She finally twisted so that she was facing him, and he took in her wide brown eyes. There was something uneasy in them, like she wasn't sure about it. "Yes, I've known for years." "As long as you've known I'm a shifter?"

"Pretty much. There was something about you Daisy, even as a child." Her eyes told him that she wanted to believe him, but she was too wary to. He'd have to find out what had happened in the years they were apart to make her that way. "I just thought of you as my best friend," she said softly. "Did you?" He wasn't sure that he believed her. He'd caught her watching him more than once while they were at school after all. "Okay, I fancied the pants off you, but I knew it couldn't go anywhere," she said. "Why not?" he asked with a smirk. He sat up so that he was next to her, and slipped his arms around her waist, enjoying the feel of her smooth naked skin against his arms. "Because -" she started, but didn't say any more. "Does this not work for you?" He trailed kisses along her collarbone and up her neck, causing her to tip her head back and moan loudly. "Or this?" he whispered huskily against her skin, making her shudder. He slipped his hand between her legs, and she soon forgot what she was disagreeing with him about.

Chapter Seven

The sun streamed through her window and woke Daisy with a start. She stretched out and was surprised to discover that Brad was still in bed with her. She wasn't sure why she thought he'd be gone, especially after he'd itted that they were mated last night. Mated. She rolled the word around in her head, not quite sure what to make of it. She'd never really imagined being mated; it was an improbability for her as a rarer kind of shifter after all. And yet, the evidence seemed to point to the contrary. She'd bitten Brad last night, and he'd bitten her, most likely sealing the bond between them for good. If that was a good thing remained to be seen. There were worse people she could end up mated to she guessed. "Morning beautiful," Brad said, yawning wide as he stretched. "Morning," she replied, the blood rushing to her cheeks. She wasn't sure why she was suddenly feeling so bashful, it wasn't as if this was the first time she'd woken up in bed with a man. Though it was the first time she'd woken up in bed with Brad. Even so, she refused to be ashamed of having a good time. In fact, she kind of hoped that they could have more of a good time now that he was awake. "How are you feeling this morning?" "Fine," she answered, the red not fading from her cheeks, and she refused to turn to face him in case he noticed. Now that would be embarrassing. Brad walked his fingers up her back, and a deep-set shiver went through Daisy, maybe she'd get the fun she wanted. "Well that's reassuring." He chuckled, the sound sending more thrills through her. It was safe to say that he was doing funny things to her insides. "What would you like to say Brad? Last night was kind of a surprise." "The sex? Or the mating?"

"Both. It's not something I ever imagined would actually happen." Though she'd hoped. Oh, how she'd hoped. Well for the sex bit. The mating bit hadn't even entered her mind, but looking back, she now couldn't believe that she'd missed the fact that Brad was a shifter. She should have been able to tell, right? "It was a long time coming, Daisy." She heard him shift in the bed, sitting up so that his chest touched her back, the warm feeling of skin against skin distracting Daisy from and of her thoughts. He slipped his hand around her waist, caressing her skin and setting it on fire. She leaned back into him and groaned. "Is being mated to me going to be a problem, Daisy?" She shook her head. "No," she whispered breathlessly. "And what about marrying me, will that be a problem?" He peppered kisses along her neck, and she pushed back into him, bringing their bodies closer together. "We're shifters, we don't need to get married," she reminded him through the moans as he slipped his hand lower. "We don't need to, but what if we want to," he whispered the words in her ear, following it with a small nip. "Oh." "So?" "So?" she repeated. "Will you marry me, Daisy?" "Yes," she responded, though she wasn't sure if it was just to his question, or to the sensations his hands were bringing her. She twisted in the bed and captured his lips with hers, trying to convey all the things she wanted to say in it.

Chapter Eight

Brad straightened his bow tie, though not because of any nerves. In fact, he wasn't nervous at all, and really wondered why grooms were so twitchy on their wedding days. Though he guessed most of them didn't have the reassurance that their wife was also their mate, and that she wouldn't ever want to be away from him. Or him from her. It didn't matter either way. Daisy was his. She would be forever, and now even the humans would know it. Music started to play, and all the people they'd invited rose to their feet. He met the eyes of one of his closest friends, a raven-shifter who he'd met at university, and nodded towards him. Reese was flanked by his mates, and Brad was looking forward to finally meeting the redhead to Reese's left. Brad had known the blonde who was stood to his right for years, Reese and Faye had been friends since childhood, and she'd visited often while Reese had been studying. Brad had always wondered why the two had never got together, guess now he knew. All eyes turned to the back of the room, and gasps came from many of the women assembled as Daisy entered the church. She almost floated, her beautiful ivory dress only adding to the illusion. It wasn't quite a princess poof, but it still made her look like one in his eyes. She reached the end of the aisle and a smile lit up her face as she looked up at him. "Hi," she whispered. "Hi," he replied, his eyes shining with emotions, probably mostly devotion. It was how he'd always felt about her. He lifted a hand and tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, noticing small spots of red that covered the side of her veil. Touching it gently, he had to contain his laugh when he saw that they were tiny jewelled ladybirds. Just like Daisy. As they said their vows in front of the people they most cared about, Brad smiled to himself, pleased that, after years of knowing she was his, he'd finally caught his ladybird.
