Camille has never met her best friend's brother, but she wants to. Ever since seeing a photo of the pretty brunette witch, Jesse's known that she was meant to be his. And when Dana tells her best friend and her brother to stay away from one another, sparks will fly... Under Her Spell is a Paranormal Council spin-off short story.
Chapter One
Camille watched as Dana became more and more agitated. Part of her was tempted to cast a calming spell, but there were too many humans around to risk it. Not to mention Dana would probably throw a fit if she did. And an angry tiger wasn’t something Camille wanted to deal with; at least not today. She felt bad enough after the call from Eliza squealing over the latest romantic gesture Ethan made. Camille was happy for her sister, but she was also more than a little jealous that she’d found her life partner. Or re-found her life partner. Whatever it counted as when childhood sweethearts rediscovered one another. “Eurgh,” Dana grunted. Camille laid a gentle hand on her friend's arm. "Everything okay?" "It'll have to be." Dana let out a long sigh. Camille waited for her to continue, knowing she would even if she was acting a little hesitant. It was mostly Dana not liking it when things didn’t quite go to plan. "The photographer has pulled out of the calendar shoot on Friday, and with the gala tonight.” Concern flashed through her wide amber eyes. "Tonight will go off without a hitch. It's perfectly planned as always," Camille reassured her, thinking about the hours the two of them had put in to make this evening a reality. "I think Ethan has a photographer friend. Want me to text Eliza and find out if he can do it?" "Can we afford his prices?" Dana chewed on her bottom lip. Camille frowned to herself. To be honest, she had no idea. She'd only met Luke once and had no idea about his business. "I'll pay out of my own pocket if needs be.” "You can't do that. The charity—"
"Is more important." She cut Dana off. "Will Ethan's friend understand us?" "He's a witch as far as I'm aware. I don't know him very well. He didn't like Eliza much as a teenager, so I've heard about him more than know him," Camille said. "But he knows about shifters?" Dana asked, worry returning to her face. Camille let out a laugh. "Shifters are hardly a secret anymore, particularly with the waves your Council seems to be making." She watched Dana carefully, though for what, she wasn’t quite sure. The one thing the two of them didn't talk about was Dana's position on the Shifter Council. As a witch, she shouldn’t even know Dana was on the Council, never mind any of the other details. "True." Dana looked like she was going to say more, but was interrupted by the buzzing of her phone. It was always like this on gala days. They'd start having conversations, and end up interrupted by duty. Dana checked her phone and sighed. "What now?" "I need to go pick my brother up." Dana grimaced before relaxing into a smile. Which seemed at odds with the affectionate way she normally spoke about her brother. Camille let it slide, knowing her friend would fill her in at a later date. "Your brother?" Camille tried to keep the excitement out of her voice but failed miserably. She'd never met Dana's brother, though not for a lack of trying. The photos at Dana’s flat had made Camille almost desperate to discover if he looked as good in person. "Stay away from him, Millie. No good will come of it," Dana warned, almost going as far as wagging her finger. "You're no fun." Camille pouted. "And text Eliza," Dana added, leaving the room with a wave.
Chapter Two
Jesse straightened his bow tie and gave himself the once over in the mirror. As much as he hated to it it, he enjoyed wearing a tux, and wished that his sister would invite him to her charity events more often. Though he was younger than Dana by a couple of years, he still knew how to scrub up. He needed to, considering he was the CFO of a rapidly growing technology company. There was no doubt he was young for such a position, but he’d started with the company when there were only five people involved, and it’d just grown from there. "Knock, knock." Dana walked through the bedroom door without waiting for him to reply. It was a good job he knew what she was like and tended to make sure he was dressed at all times. There were some things he didn't want to share with his sister, and what he looked like naked was one of them. "Hey, sis. Ready for tonight?" he asked, turning to grin at her. Taking in her sleek emerald green dress, he felt his protective brother side rear its head; he didn't like the idea of men ogling her. "As ready as we can be. And take that look off your face." "What look?" He feigned innocence. One glance at Dana’s face revealed that she didn’t buy it. "The one that says you're going to go all big brother. Need I remind you I'm older?" "No," he itted. "Good. On that note, stay away from Camille." "The cute brunette in the photos you send?" he asked, half teasing, half genuinely curious. Whenever he saw photos of Dana's charity events, the pretty brunette always seemed to be there. And he always found himself staring at her for longer than intended.
"Yes. Stay away Jesse. I won't have you messing with her," Dana warned. "I wouldn't mess with any woman." "Really? Are you seriously telling me you don't have a string of women traipsing in and out of your room like when we were teenagers?" She raised a sceptical eyebrow. "Yes, I'm seriously telling you that." Which was the truth. While shifters normally had a high sex drive, something had switched his off recently, and no women really held his attention. Well, except for the pretty brunette in Dana’s gala photos. Camille, he reminded himself. She was called Camille. He ran the name around in his head, enjoying the sound of it. Staying away from Dana’s friend would prove difficult.
Chapter Three
Camille smoothed her skirts, feeling ridiculously self-conscious in what Eliza had coaxed her into wearing. As if the plunging neckline wasn’t enough, the dress was almost entirely made of lace, with only a little strategic lining stopping her from being completely on display. When Camille had tried to tell Eliza no, her sister just laughed and insisted, a twinkle in her eye. If Camille hadn't already known that her sister didn't have any precognitive powers, she'd have sworn Eliza knew something about tonight. Grabbing her phone from her clutch, she checked to see if Dana had texted. People were starting to arrive and her best friend wasn't anywhere to be seen, which was unusual to say the least. Dana was never late, particularly when there were events to be run and animals to save. Camille glanced at the large banner that adorned the left of the entrance. What most people didn’t know, was that the graceful and powerful animal pictured was actually Dana in her alternate form. They'd been in India at the time, and after three days of failing to capture a picture of the elusive beasts, Dana lost patience and shifted, allowing them to get the shot they needed. Camille would never voice the opinion, but she’d suspected more than once Dana was the reason they hadn't seen any tigers. The others probably smelled her and ran the opposite direction. Camille didn't blame them. Even in human form, Dana was a force to be reckoned with. A sleek midnight blue sports car pulled up to the red carpet and Camille let out a sigh of relief. Dana was here. Except it wasn't Dana getting out of the car; it was a man. He was wearing an impeccable dark suit that was clearly expensive and tailored just for his tall frame. His dark hair was just as impeccably groomed and dual stabs of jealousy and hurt went through her. She hadn't realised Dana was bringing a date, and more than that, something about the man made her envious of her best friend, even to the point where pale blue sparks began to crackle along her fingertips. Dana got out of the car. Her green dress emphasised her curves in the best possible way, and her perfectly quaffed dark hair gave her an elegance Camille
could only ever hope to achieve, even with the ability to magic her hair into shape. Dana laughed as the man said something to her, and there was another twinge of jealousy within Camille. This night wasn't going to end well if she couldn't get herself under control. And not just because it would ruin it for her and Dana, but because, if this carried on, there was a good chance her magic would get loose and destroy something. They walked towards Camille, but neither of them touched the other, which seemed odd. "Sorry we're late," Dana said as they arrived, an easy smile on her face. But that wasn't where Camille's attention stayed. Her gaze dragged slowly up and down the man who’d arrived with Dana, and her eyes widened when they reached his. They were an odd amber colour, and they seemed to sizzle in the evening light as they took stock of Camille. She cocked her head to the side, confused for a moment by the fact his eyes seemed eerily familiar. “Hi, I don’t believe we’ve met,” she said breathlessly. “I’m Camille Davidson.” She held her hand out, and the man took it instantly. The moment their skin touched, it felt as if sparks of magic engulfed Camille’s hand. A quick glance down revealed the sparks weren’t just in her head, and she hoped the man hadn’t noticed them. It’d mean some serious explaining if he wasn’t a paranormal like them. “Jesse Stephenson,” he replied with an easy smile. Wait, Stephenson? But that meant the man was Dana’s brother, and not her date. Camille’s heart almost skipped a beat. Beside them, Dana let out a soft growl, and Jesse chuckled in response. “Not happening, sis,” he muttered under his breath, but still loud enough for Camille to hear. She briefly wondered what he meant, but assumed it was in response to Dana saying something about staying away from her. Her friend could be a little over protective at times. “Pleased to meet you,” Camille said, a high-pitched giggle escaping. Inwardly, she cursed. She wasn’t normally like this, even when she hadn’t been with a man in a while. Maybe that would change tonight. In fact, she hoped that changed tonight.
“And you,” he replied, slipping his hand from hers. “Jesse. Bar. Now.” When Camille finally pulled her gaze away from Jesse, Dana’s lips were pursed and her eyes narrowed, and she imagined her friend’s tiger was close to the surface. Jesse gave Camille a smile, which came across as more of a knowing smirk, before turning and walking towards the bar with his sister. Camille watched the two of them go, iring the stretch of his suit over his toned shoulder. It didn’t matter that he was Dana’s brother; Camille was a goner.
Chapter Four
“Get that look off your face,” Dana said, her amber eyes, so similar to his, sparking with anger. Jesse leaned against the bar facing her, but also positioning himself so he could keep an eye on the dark-haired witch who happened to be his sister’s best friend. And so much more, if his base instincts were right. When their skin had touched, he’d sworn it felt as though sparks covered the skin of their hands, and it had only taken a quick downwards glance to reveal they weren’t just a part of his imagination. Thinking about those sparks, Jesse smiled to himself. If she was a witch, and she must be given that reaction, there was a good chance that she could be his mate. Even more of a chance if he took into the effect her photograph always seemed to have on him. “Hmm?” “You’re not listening to me, are you?” Dana demanded. “Nope. But did you really expect me to?” He gave her a half smile, knowing from past experience it would infuriate her; it always had. “Jesse, I’m serious. Don’t ruin my event.” “By going near Camille?” Surprise lacing his voice. He knew that Dana wasn’t a fan of the two of them together, but he had no idea she was so ionate about it. “Yes, by going near Camille. She’s not for you,” she said, a serious look on her face. If this had been about anything else, he’d have cut his losses already and moved on. But something deep within told him doing that wasn’t in his best interests. Not this time at least. “What if she is?” he asked softly. Dana’s eyebrows raised in surprise, and she was finally at a loss for words. He waited a few more moments, before giving in to what he really wanted and looking in Camille’s direction. She was talking to a woman with shocking pink
hair and a midnight blue dress. Camille glanced upwards and it felt like their eyes locked even from across the room. That woman was meant to be his. He was sure of it. “Prove it, and I’ll drop it,” Dana said finally, and he turned his attention back to her. She downed the drink that had been placed in front of her, and stalked off, the innate grace her inner tiger gave her coming through in every move. It took Jesse all of ten seconds before his attention returned to Camille. A low growl escaped from his throat as he realised just how much skin the lace of her dress revealed, though he wasn’t sure if it was because he wanted to see more, or wanted other people to see less. Probably a mix given the way some of the other men were leering at her.
Chapter Five
“Thank you,” Camille said to the Mayor as he walked away. While he hadn’t said much, he’d left a pretty sizable donation, which is what they were really after tonight. The ticket price was all very well, but with this gala, like most, it barely covered costs. The way they made money for charity was the donations, not to mention the auction later in the evening; once people were good and drunk and more likely to spend their money. The first time she’d seen one happen, she’d felt a little icky about it all, but Dana reassured her that it was normal. Plus, the prizes were all decent quality. She’d seen a diamond bracelet she secretly wanted but had no chance of ever affording. It was a simple silver chain with a tiger’s face as the clasp and diamonds set into its eyes. Small and dainty, she couldn’t even explain why she wanted it. Just that she did. “You look lost in thought,” a rich male voice said from behind her. Camille spun on her heels, not at all surprised to find herself facing Jesse. “I thought Dana told you to stay away from me?” she asked, having regained her composure since being introduced to him. Though from the way his scent was affecting her, it wouldn’t last long. He wore cologne, or at least she assumed so, but there was an underlying woodsy scent that she was sure was a result of his shifter side. Though, now she thought about it, she hadn’t picked up on the scent from any of the other shifters here; and there were plenty. She’d even seen the infamous defence lawyer, Arabella Reed, about and almost died in shock. The fox shifter was as close to a legend as the paranormal world got. “You have an older sister, right?” he asked. Camille nodded, briefly wondering how he knew, but Dana must have told him. “And do you do everything she says?” His tone was light, putting her at ease. She shook her head. “But I wore this dress because she said so.” “I like the dress.” His voice lowered, cracking slightly.
She imagined it was from the same desire building up inside her, but pushed the notion aside as absurd. There was no way he wanted someone like her. Looking like he did, he could have any woman in the room. Probably more than one at once if he chose. “Thanks,” she said breathlessly. To her surprise, he took a step closer to her, and her magic sparked to life again. She was normally in much better control of it than this, yet there seemed to be something about him that set it off. She’d have to ask Eliza if the same happened to her around Ethan. “Can I kiss you?” His question was tentative, as if unsure of her answer. Indecision warred inside Camille. On the one hand, she really wanted him to. On the other, Dana had told him to stay away from her, and she wouldn’t have done that without good reason. Despite it all, she found herself nodding, and Jesse’s eyes lit up. Carefully, he cupped her cheek with his hand and started to close the gap between them. The air around them thickened, and she was struggling to draw breath. Gently, his lips touched hers, and her mind went blank. She gave in to her more primal urges and pressed her body against his, no longer caring who could see them.
Chapter Six
Dana was going to kill him, and he didn’t even care. He broke the kiss and looked down at Camille’s upturned face. There was no doubt in his mind she was the most beautiful woman in the room, especially given the freshly kissed look she had now. A wicked expression ed over her face. “Come.” She tugged on his hand, and he followed, curious about what she was up to. She drew him about ten feet away, to a curtained alcove off the main room. Glancing around a couple of times, probably to check there was no one watching, she dragging him behind the curtain. There wasn’t much room, and their bodies were already pressed tightly against each other, not that he was going to complain. Camille grabbed his face and pressed her lips against his in a searing kiss. Jesse returned the kiss, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her closer to him. He backed her against the wall and trailed kisses down her neck and across her collar bone, giving her skin a quick nip as he did. Camille let out a small whimper, and his inner tiger purred in response. Camille jumped, wrapping her legs around his waist and pressing herself against him. This time his tiger did more than just purr. It very nearly demanded to be out and lay claim to the woman in his arms. Jesse trailed his hand up Camille’s leg, bringing the skirt of her dress with it and allowing him to feel her skin against his. Her hands were on his bow tie, hastily untying it and letting it fall to the floor before moving her attention to the buttons of his shirt. Taking a chance, Jesse moved his hand inwards up the inside of her thigh, getting more soft whimpers in return. Moving her underwear to the side, he pushed his fingers into her. “More.” He closed his eyes at her half-whimpered word, trying his hardest to contain
himself; but it wasn’t easy. Camille’s hand pressed against his fly, making it even more difficult for Jesse to control himself. She unzipped it quickly and had hold of him within seconds. A tingling sensation drew his attention down between them. Her hands were covered in pale blue sparks again. “Sorry,” she murmured, withdrawing her hands. “Don’t be sorry, it felt good.” He was finding it difficult to focus on the words when there were so many other sensations. She bucked against his hand and he could feel her getting close. “Now,” she said, panting loudly. At first, he wasn’t sure what she meant, but she soon took him in her hand again and pulled his away from her. She guided him, and he slid into her, losing all conscious thought as he realised just how right being inside her felt. They began to move, lost in a rhythm that was only for them, their moans filling the alcove. Jesse threaded his hand through her hair, he was probably making a mess of it, but she didn’t seem to care. The moment Camille’s nails raked down his chest, he knew he was done for. He peppered kisses against her neck, his teeth lengthening in his mouth. A small part of him knew what was about to happen, but he was helpless to stop it. He wasn’t even sure he wanted to stop it. Though he suspected he may rethink the decision when he wasn’t quite so drunk on Camille. Without waiting another moment, he sunk his teeth into her neck. She moaned again and shuddered beneath him. There was a slight tingling sensation along his entire body, but he ignored it, his senses too engulfed in sealing the bond between them. Camille fell apart in his arms, and he swiftly followed, releasing her neck and letting out a long groan as pleasure ripped through him.
Chapter Seven
Camille collapsed against Jesse’s chest, completely spent. She’d never had sex like that before. Her eyes fluttered open, and she was surprised to see pale blue sparks still lingering around them. She hadn’t lost control of her magic like that since she was a child. “What is it?” Jesse asked, moving his head so that he could see her, but not losing the connection between their bodies. “It’s my magic. I’m guessing it’s something to do with—” She stopped talking, not wanting to it that she thought it had something to do with bonding for life. Or was it mating when there was a shifter involved? She’d never been too sure. Her hands flew to her neck and his eyes followed. “Mating?” he supplied. She nodded her head. “I can’t say this is how I pictured it happening.” He chuckled slightly. “You mean you imagined finding your mate and not ripping her clothes off?” Camille asked with a lazy smile. “Your clothes are very much intact I’ll have you know,” he said, but she could tell from the look on his face that he was only joking, even if he was telling the truth. She started to laugh. Despite having the best sex of her life, the two of them were still mostly dressed, with just his unbuttoned shirt any indication of what they’d done. Well, other than the fact that their bodies were still pressed together, and he was still inside her. “Then I’m disappointed.” He growled in response, sending a thrill through her. “I also imagined there’d be
a little more freaking out,” he said. “From you or me?” She was genuinely curious. She’d heard stories of shifters not wanting to accept their mate. But the bond was undeniable. She was even more sure of that now. Though maybe that was just the romantic in her. “I’ve suspected you were my mate from the moment I saw your photo,” he said, nuzzling into her neck. “I can’t decide if that’s creepy or romantic,” she deadpanned. “I’m your mate. It’s romantic,” he said with a certainty she couldn’t argue with. Deciding enough was enough, she moved against him, and the two of them fell back into the easy rhythm that proved they were meant to be together.
Chapter Eight
“I gave you one instruction, and you couldn’t even stick to it,” Dana said from behind him. She stepped up so she was stood next to him. Part of him was disappointed it wasn’t Camille in her place, but she’d had to go and do her actual job. “And you expected me to listen?” Genuinely unsure. Dana smiled knowingly at him. “No. I had a feeling.” “Then why didn’t you just introduce us in the first place?” he asked. Twin pangs of annoyance and regret coursed through him as he realised that he could have had more time with Camille if his sister had just done that one thing. “I wasn’t completely sure until tonight. She has her eye on the bracelet, by the way,” she said, walking away before he could respond.
Chapter Nine
Camille had watched sadly as the tiger bracelet sold. Part of her really wished she had the money to buy it, but working for a charity didn’t exactly give her a big salary. And nor should it. She wasn’t in this for the money, and though the parties were fun, she never forgot the real aim was to save as many endangered species as they could. She just wished they could do more. “Miss me?” Jesse’s cocky voice asked. “More than I want to it,” she replied, already annoyed at herself for being so needy. She’d have to get over this quickly, or she’d end up getting annoyed at herself every time he was around. “Glad to hear it.” He kissed her swiftly, and she enjoyed how natural it felt, even if they’d only been mated a matter of minutes. This she could get used to. “I got you a present,” he said, a boyish grin lighting up his face. She cocked her head to the side, curious. They’d only been apart for fifteen minutes at the most. It didn’t seem possible that he’d got her anything. He held out a long velvet box and her pulse pounded rapidly, excitement building within. Her mind was already racing, and she thought she knew what was in there but didn’t want to get her hopes up too much. Slowly, Jesse opened the lid, revealing the bracelet she’d coveted since the moment she’d seen it. She reached out to trace the tiger’s face with her finger. At least now she knew why the tiger had been so much of a draw for her. “Jesse,” she whispered, not sure what else she should say. “You shouldn’t have.” “Yes, I should,” he said just as quietly. Carefully, he lifted the bracelet out of the box. He gestured for her arm, and she held it out. Ever so gently, he placed the bracelet around her wrist and fastened the clasp. “Thank you,” she said, looking up at him with tears in her eyes.
He stroked her cheek gently, and something ed between them. This was what having a mate meant. What Eliza meant when she talked about being with Ethan. And what she’d been searching for without even knowing she was looking. Jesses closed the gap between them and kissed her. While the same ion they’d shared earlier simmered beneath their kiss, there was also something tender about it. Something that hinted at there being so much more between them.
