Pues aunque en realidad no conozco al amor, ni sé como paga su recompensa a la gente, sin embargo ocurre muy a menudo que leo en los libros acerca de sus milagros y de su ira cruel; bien leo allí que quiere ser amo y señor; no me atrevo a decirlo, sus golpes son tan aciagos. ¡Que Dios nos libre de tal señor! No puedo decir otra cosa. Sobre los usos, en parte por placer y en parte por instrucción, leo a menudo en los libros, como os dije. ¿Pero a qué viene todo esto? No hace mucho tiempo se me ocurrió mirar en un libro escrito en letras antiguas; y enseguida, para aprender cierta cosa, leí todo el día muy rápido y con ahínco. Porque de viejos campos, como dicen los hombres; sale todo este grano nuevo, año tras año; y de viejos libros, a decir verdad, sale toda esta ciencia nueva que se aprende. Pero ahora a propósito de esta materia, seguir leyéndolo me dio tanto deleite que el día entero me pareció muy breve. Este libro del cual hago mención se titulaba exactamente así como diré, “Tulio sobre el sueño de Escipión”; siete capítulos tenía sobre el cielo y el infierno, y la tierra, y las almas que allí habitan, acerca de lo cual, lo más brevemente que pueda, os diré lo más importante de su pensamiento. Primero habla, cuando Escipión llegó al África, de cómo se encontró con Masinisa, que lo ha tomado en brazos de alegría, y luego habla del discurso de ellos y toda la dicha que había entre ambos, hasta que el día empezó a acabar; y cómo el progenitor de él, el tan querido Africano, empezó a aparecérsele en sueños esa noche. Luego cuenta cómo, desde un lugar lleno de estrellas, Africano le ha mostrado Cartago y le ha anunciado de antemano toda su fortuna, y le ha dicho que todo hombre, culto o ignorante, que ama el bien común, bien dispuesto, irá a un lugar bienaventurado donde la alegría perdura sin fin. Entonces le preguntó si la gente que aquí muere tiene vida y morada en otro lugar; y Africano dijo “por cierto, sin duda”, y que el espacio de nuestras presentes vidas mundanas no es sino una especie de muerte, dondequiera vayamos, y la gente recta irá, después de morir,

al cielo; y le mostró la galaxia. Entonces le indicó la pequeña tierra que está aquí, en comparación con la cantidad del cielo; y después le mostró las nueve esferas, y después oyó aquella melodía que viene de esas esferas tres veces tres, que es fuente de melodía y música en este mundo y causa de armonía. Luego le pidió, puesto que la tierra es tan chica y llena de tormento y de infortunio, que no se deleitara en el mundo. Luego le dijo que en el espacio de algunos años todas las estrellas volverían al lugar en que estaban primero; y sería olvidado todo lo que en este mundo ha hecho la humanidad. Después Escipión le rogó que le mostrara todo el camino que lleva a esa dicha celestial; y aquél dijo “primero sábete inmortal y fíjate siempre con empeño en que obres y aprendas para el bien común y entonces no dejarás de llegar rápidamente a ese lugar dilecto que está lleno de felicidad y de almas claras. Pero los transgresores de la ley, en verdad, y la gente lujuriosa, después de morir, girarán siempre alrededor de la tierra, en pena, hasta que muchos mundos pasen, sin duda, y una vez perdonadas todas sus malas acciones, entonces llegarán a ese lugar bienaventurado, para llegar al cual ¡que Dios te envíe su gracia!” El día empezó a declinar y la oscura noche, que priva a las bestias de sus tareas, me quitó el libro por falta de luz y hacia mi cama empecé a dirigirme colmado de pensamientos y laboriosa fatiga: porque no sólo tenía aquello que no quería sino que además no tenía aquello que deseaba. Pero finalmente mi espíritu, por último, cansado de mi labor de todo el día, ganó reposo, que me hizo dormir profundamente, y en sueños encontré, mientras yacía, que Africano, en ese mismo atuendo en que Escipión lo vio un rato antes, había llegado y estaba ahí junto a mi lecho. El fatigado cazador, dormido en su cama, vuelve pronto al bosque con su mente; el juez sueña cómo sus pleitos se resuelven; el cochero sueña cómo andan sus coches; el rico, con oro; el caballero lucha con sus enemigos, el enfermo sueña que bebe del barril, el amante sueña que ha conquistado a su dama. ¿No puedo entonces decir que la causa de que había leído antes acerca de Africano me hizo soñar que estaba parado allí? Pero dijo así “¡te has portado tan bien al leer en mi viejo y desgarrado libro, al cual Macrobio no daba poca importancia, que algo de tu labor quiero recompensar!” ¡Citerea! feliz y dulce señora que con tu antorcha encendida sometes a quien quieres y me hiciste soñar este sueño,

ven ahora en mi ayuda, pues puedes hacerlo mejor; tan ciertamente como te vi nor-noroeste, cuando empecé a escribir mi sueño, así dame fuerzas para rimarlo y componerlo. La Historia El susodicho Africano me tomó enseguida y me llevó consigo hasta el portón que se abría a un parque amurallado con piedra verde; y encima del portón, grabados con grandes letras, había versos escritos, según me pareció, sobre cada mitad, de significado muy diferente, de los cuales os diré el sentido pleno. “Por mí los hombres entran en ese lugar dichoso que sana el corazón y cura las heridas mortales; por mí los hombres llegan a la fuente de Gracia donde siempre durará el verde y gozoso Mayo; este es el canino a toda buena ventura. ¡Alégrate, lector, y arroja todo pesar, estoy totalmente abierto! ¡Entra y apresúrate! “Por mí los hombres van”, decía el otro lado, “hacia los mortales golpee de las esferas, cuyos guías son el Desdén y la Resistencia, allí ningún árbol dará jamás fruto ni hojas. Este río te conduce al dique desdichado donde todo pez sufre en la prisión; la huida es el único remedio”. Estos versos estaban escritos en oro y negro y empecé a considerarlos un rato porque con éste crecía cada vez más mí miedo y con aquél mi corazón se volvía osado; uno me calentaba, el otro me daba frío. Yo no tenía entendimiento para el error, para elegir entrar o huir, salvarme o perderme. Así como puesto entre dos imanes de igual potencia un trozo de hierro no puede moverse ni a un lado ni u otro - pues lo que uno puede atraer el otro rechaza – así estaba yo, que no sabía sí era mejor entrar o dejar, hasta que el Africano, mí guía, me tomó y me empujó hasta los anchos portones y dijo “está escrito en tú cara tu error, aunque no me lo digas; pero no temas entrar en ente sitio porque esta escritura no está dirigida a ti ni a nadie, salvo que sea sirviente de Amor; pues tú has perdido el gusto del amor, vislumbro, como de lo dulce y de lo amargo el enfermo. Sin embargo, aunque seas lerdo y no puedas hacer, bien puedes ver; pues a muchos que no pueden soportar una embestida les guste empero estar presentes en la lucha y decidir sí éste o aquél es el mejor; y si tienes habilidad para componer te mostraré un asunto sobre el que puedas escribir”. Diciendo esto tomó mi mano al instante con lo cual cobré ánimos y entré rápido. Pero ¡oh Dios! ¡qué contento y alegre me sentí! Porque en todas partes donde pusiera mis ojos había árboles vestidos de hojas que durarán siempre,

cada uno en su especie, de color fresco y verde como esmeralda, de modo que era un regocijo ver. El roble constructor y también el fresno altivo; el olmo rapaz, sarcófago para el cadáver; el boj flautista; la encina para la vara de la fusta; el pino navegante; el ciprés para lamentar la muerte; el tejo disparador, el álamo para las astas lisas; el olivo de la paz y también la vid borracha, la palma victoriosa y el laurel para adivinar. Vi un jardín lleno de ramas florecidas junto a un río en una verde pradera, donde había siempre abundancia de dulzura, con flores blancas, azules, amarillas y rojas; y manantiales fríos de ningún modo muertos, llenos de pequeños peces que nadan alegremente con aletas rojas y escamas brillantes como plata. Oí cantar a los pájaros en todas las ramas con voces de ángeles en su armonía; algunos se ocupaban en criar a sus pichones. Los conejitos corrían en sus juegos y más allá, por todas partes, empecé a atisbar el medroso corzo, el venado, el ciervo y la cierva, ardillas y bestias pequeñas de natural manso. De instrumentos de cuerda en armonía oí tocar con dulzura tan encantadora, que Dios, que es creador y señor de todo, nunca oyó nada mejor, según colijo; enseguida un viento, no podía ser algo más débil, produjo en las hojas verdes un ruido suave de acuerdo con el canto de los pájaros en lo alto. El aire de este lugar era tan templado que nunca había molestia de calor o frío; también crecían todas las especias y hierbas curativas y nadie allí enfermaba o envejecía; sin embargo había alegría mil veces más que lo que el hombre puede decir; y no anochecía nunca sino que siempre era día claro a la vista de cualquiera. Bajo un árbol junto a una fuente, digo, nuestro señor Cupido forja y afila sus flechas; y a sus pies estaba listo su arco y su hija templaba todo el tiempo las puntas en la fuente, y con su destreza las acomodaba después para que sirvieran algunas pera matar y otras para herir y cortar. Enseguida después observé a la Complacencia, la Condición, el Goce, la Cortesía y la Astucia que tiene facultad y poder de forzar a una persona a hacer locuras, ella era deforme, no he de mentir; y junto a aquél, bajo un roble, me parece, vi al Deleite que estaba con la Gentileza. Vi a la Belleza sin ninguna ropa y a la Juventud, llena de juego, y al Solaz, la Temeridad, la Adulación y el Deseo, el Mensaje y la Recompensa y otros tres - sus nombres no serán aquí dichos por mí – y sobre gruesos y largos pilares de jaspe vi un templo de bronce sólidamente construido. Alrededor del templo bailaban constantemente mujeres, de las cuales algunas había

hermosas en sí mismas, y otras eran alegres; en túnicas, con el cabello suelto, andaban por allí - ese era su oficio siempre, año tras año – y sobre el templo, palomas bellas y blancas vi asentadas, cientos de pares. Ante la puerta del templo, muy seria, estaba sentada la señora Paz con una cortina en la mano; y a su lado, maravillosamente discreta, encontré sentada a la señora Paciencia, con el rostro pálido, sobre un montículo de arena; y aún más cerca, adentro y también afuera, la Promesa y el Arte y la compañía de su gente. Dentro del templo, de suspiros calientes como fuego oí un murmullo que empezó a correr; esos suspiros eran engendrados por el deseo y hacían ardor todos los altares con nueva llama; y descubrí entonces que toda la causa de la pena que ellos sufren viene de la amarga diosa Celos. Mientras andaba vi al dios Príapo en el templo, parado en un sitio soberano, en tal estado como cuando el burro lo frustró con rebuznos a la noche, y con su cetro en la mano; con mucho esmero los hombres empezaron a tratar de colocar en su cabeza, de diversos colores, guirnaldas llenas de flores nuevas y frescas. Y en un rincón secreto, en diversión, encontré a Venus y a su portera, Riqueza. Ella era muy noble y altiva en su porte; ese lugar era oscuro, pero después vi un poco de claridad, apenas podía haber menos, y en un lecho de oro estaba ella descansando hasta que el sol caliente empezó a caer. Su pelo dorado con un cordón de oro estaba atado, destrenzado mientras yacía, y desnuda desde el pecho a la cabeza se la podía ver; y, a decir verdad, el resto bien cubierto para mi gusto sólo con un paño sutil de Valencia, no había otra ropa más gruesa para protección. El lugar ofrecía mil sabores dulces y Baco, dios del vino, estaba sentado a su lado, y después Ceres, que da remedio al hambre; y como dije, en medio yacía Cipria, en cuyas rodillas dos niños lloraban para ser sus auxiliares; pero así la dejé estar y empecé a mirar más adentro en el templo donde, a pesar de la casta Diana, muchísimos arcos partidos colgaban de la pared de aquellas doncellas que comenzaron a emplear su tiempo en servirla; y pintadas por todas partes había muchas historias, de las que tocaré unas pocas, como la de Calixto y Atalanta, y de varias doncellas de las que me falta el nombre; Semíramis, Candace y Hércule, Biblis, Dido, Tisbe y Píramo, Tristán, Isolda, Paris y Aquiles, Helena, Cleopatra y Troilo, Sila y también la madre de Rómulo, todos estos estaban pintados al otro lado,

y todo su amor, y en qué desgracia murieron. Cuando volví a entrar en el lugar de que hablé, que era tan suave y verde, seguí caminando para solazarme. Entonces advertí que allí estaba sentada una reina que, así como la luz del sol estival brilla superando a las estrellas, así ella era mucho más hermosa que toda otra criatura. En un prado, sobre una colina de flores estaba sentada esta noble diosa Naturaleza: de ramas eran sus salas y aposentos, fabricados según su arte y su medida; y ninguna ave que viene de generación faltaba de su puesto junto a ella, donde acataba sus sentencias y la escuchaba. Pues esto ocurría el día de San Valentín, cuando todas las aves acuden allí a elegir pareja, de todas las especies que los hombres pueden pensar; y era enorme el ruido que empezaron a hacer, porque la tierra, el mar, los árboles y todas las lagunas estaban tan llenos, que apenas había espacio para que yo estuviera, tan colmado estaba todo. Y así como Alano en la Queja de Natura describe a la Naturaleza en su atuendo y rostro, en tal atuendo la pueden ver allí los hombres. Esta noble emperatriz, llena de gracia, pidió a cada uno de las aves que ocupara su sitio, tal como acostumbraba a hacerlo año tras año el día de San Valentín, en ese mismo lugar. A saber, de este modo, las aves de presa se ubicaron más alto; y luego las aves pequeñas, que comen según la naturaleza las inclina, como gusanos, o cosas que no voy a decir; pero las aves acuáticas se sentaron más bajo en el valle; y las aves que viven de semillas se sentaron en lo verde, y había tantas que era maravilla ver. Allí los hombres podían ver el águila real, que con su aguda vista atraviesa al sol; y otras águilas de clase inferior que los estudiosos bien pueden describir. Allí estaba el tirano con sus plumas pardas y grises, es decir el azor, que hacen sufrir a los pájaros por su violenta rapiña. El noble halcón, que con sus patas agarra la mano del rey; también el bravo cernícalo, enemigo de la codorniz; el gavilán que se esfuerza a menudo para buscar la alondra; allí estaba la paloma con sus ojos mansos; el celoso cisne que al morirse canta; también la lechuza, que presagia la muerte; la grulla, el gigante con su sonido de trompeta; la chova ladrona y también el pendenciero arrendajo; el desdeñoso grajo; la garza, enemiga de la anguila; la falsa avefría, llena de traición; el estornino, que puede revelar el pensamiento; el tímido petirrojo y el milano cobarde; el gallo, que es el reloj de las pequeñas aldeas; el gorrión, hijo de Venus; el ruiseñor, que hace brotar las frescas hojas nuevas; la golondrina, asesina de las pequeñas abejas

que hacen miel de las flores de colores frescos; la desposada tórtola, con su corazón fiel; el pavo real, con sus brillantes alas de ángel; el faisán, burlador del gallo por las noches; la gansa vigilante; el cuclillo desnaturalizado; el papagayo, lleno de entretenimiento; el pato, destructor de su propia raza; la cigüeña, la vengadora del adulterio; el voraz cormorán, lleno de glotonería; el cuervo sabio; la corneja con voz de desgracia; el viejo zorzal; el tordo entrecano. ¿Qué puedo decir? Aves de toda clase que en este mundo tienen plumas y estatura se podían encontrar reunidas en ese lugar ante la noble diosa Naturaleza. Y cada uno de ellos se dispuso con cuidado a elegir o a tomar benignamente, por el consentimiento, su pareja o compañero. Pero, al grano, la Naturaleza tenía en su mano un águila hembra, de aspecto la más noble que encontrara entre sus criaturas, la más benigna y la más hermosa; en ella todas las virtudes estaban como en casa, a tal punto, que la Naturaleza misma era feliz al mirarla y besar su pico a menudo. La Naturaleza, vicaria del Señor omnipotente, que el calor, el frío, lo pesado, lo liviano, lo húmedo y lo seco ha tejido con número parejo y concorde, con voz tranquila empezó a hablar y decir “aves, prestad atención a mi pensamiento, os ruego, y, para vuestra ventaja, en vista a las necesidades, tan rápido como pueda hablar despacharé el asunto. Sabéis muy bien que el día de San Valentín, por mi estatuto y en obediencia a mi gobierno, venís a elegir - y lo hacéis volando vuestras parejas, según os instigo al placer. Sin embargo, de mi justa ordenanza no puedo apartarme, ni por todo el mundo, de que aquél que es más valioso empezará. El águila macho, como sabéis bien, el ave regia, por encima de vosotros en rango, sabia y digna, reservada, fiel como estrella, a la cual he formado, como podéis ver, en cada parte según me gusta más, - no hay necesidad de describir su figura elegirá primero y hablará a su manera. Y después de ella por orden elegiréis según vuestra especie, cada uno a su gusto, y, de acuerdo a vuestra suerte, ganaréis o perderéis; pero a aquél de vosotros que el amor más enreda mande Dios a aquella que por él más suspira”. Y enseguida llamó el águila macho y dijo, “hijo mío, la elección te toca a tí. Con esta condición, sin embargo, debe escoger cada uno de los que están aquí, que ella esté de acuerdo con la elección, quienquiera sea que haya de ser su compañero; este es nuestro uso siempre, año tras año; y quien en este tiempo pueda ser favorecido enhorabuena venga a este lugar”.

Con la cabeza inclinada y el semblante humilde esta real águila macho habló sin demorarse; “como soberana señora, no compañera, elijo, y elijo con voluntad, corazón y pensamiento, al águila hembra que está en tu mano, tan bien hecha, cuyo soy todo y a la que siempre serviré, haga ella lo que haga, me dé vida o muerte. Le imploro por misericordia y gracia, en cuanto que ella es mi señora y soberana; si no, que muera yo al instante en este sitio. Pues ciertamente no puedo vivir mucho en pena, porque en mi corazón las venas están cortadas; teniendo por recompensa tan sólo mi fidelidad, querido corazón, ten piedad de mi dolor. Y si alguna vez llegará a serle infiel, desobediente o descuidado con intención, aventurero o dispuesto a amar a otra, te ruego que ésta sea mi condena: que por estas aves sea yo despedazado el mismo día en que ella me encuentre infiel con ella o culpable de crueldad. Y puesto que nadie la ama tan bien como yo, aunque nunca me hiciera promesa de amor, ella podría ser mía por su compasión ya que con ningún otro lazo puedo unirme con ella. Porque nunca, por ninguna pena, dejaré de servirla, por más lejos que se vaya; digas lo que digas, mi discurso ha terminado”. Tal como la nueva rosa, roja y fresca, a la llegada del sol estival se colorea, así de vergüenza empezó a crecer el color del águila hembra, cuando oyó todo esto; ella ni contestó “está bien” ni discrepó. Estaba muy ruborizada, hasta que la Naturaleza dijo “hija, nada temas, te aseguro”. Otra águila macho habló enseguida, de índole inferior y dijo “eso no será”; yo la amo más que tú, por San Juan, o al menos la amo tan bien como tú; y más tiempo la he servido en mi condición, y si ella hubiera de amar por largo amor, sólo para mí sería el galardón. Y me atrevo a decir que si me halla falso, cruel, peleador o rebelde de algún modo, o celoso, ¡que me cuelguen del cuello! Y si no me entrego a su servicio hasta donde puede llegar mi entendimiento, para salvar su honor de punta a cabo, tomad mi vida y todos los bienes que tengo”. La tercera águila macho respondió así, “bien, señores, veis aquí la pequeña deliberación; porque cada ave proclama estar en ventaja con su pareja o con su querida dama; además la Naturaleza misma no quiere demorarse aquí, ni la mitad de lo que yo diría; y sin embargo, o hablo, o debo morir de pena. De luengo servicio no me jacto de ningún modo, pero es tan posible que yo muera hoy de dolor, como el que ha estado languideciendo estos veinte inviernos, y bien puede suceder

que un hombre sirva mejor y pague más en medio año, aunque no sea más que eso, que otro que ha servido desde mucho antes. No digo esto por mí, porque no puedo dar un servicio que pueda gustar a mi señora; pero me atrevo a decir que soy su hombre más fiel según mi opinión, y la complacerla mejor; en pocas palabras, hasta que la muerte me arrebate seré siempre suyo, despierto o dormitando, y fiel en todo lo que el corazón imagine”. En toda mi vida, desde el día en que nací, tan noble suplica de amor o de otra cosa jamás antes oí de ningún hombre que tuviera tiempo y astucia suficientes para ejercer su porte y su elocuencia; y desde la mañana empezó a durar este discurso hasta que el sol declinó asombrosamente rápido. Las voces de las aves que querían liberarse sonaron tan fuerte con “¡termina y déjanos ir!”, que creí que el bosque se había deshecho. “¡Acaba!” gritaron, “¡ay de nosotros! ¡nos quebrarás! ¿Cuándo tendrá fin tu maldita defensa? ¿Cómo puede un juez creer a alguna de las partes, tuya o no, sin ninguna prueba?” La gansa, el cuclillo y el pato también gritaban “¡kec, kec!”, “¡cucú!” y “¡cuec, cuec!” tanto, que el ruido perforaba mis oídos. La gansa dijo “¡todo esto no vale una mosca! Pero puedo ponerle pronto remedio y voy a dar mi veredicto franca y rápidamente como ave acuática, para enojo o gusto de cualquiera”. “Y yo como insectívoro”, dijo el necio cuclillo, “ahora pues, por mi propia autoridad y en común provecho, me haré cargo, ya que liberarnos es una gran caridad”. “¿Podéis aguardar aún un instante, por Dios?” dijo la tórtola, “si vuestra voluntad fuera que una persona hablara, sería mejor que callara. Yo soy ave granívora, una de las más indignas, sé muy bien, y de poco entendimiento; pero es mejor que la lengua de alguien quede quieta antes de que se injiera en los asuntos de los que no sabe aconsejar ni cantar. Y quien lo haga se abrumará muy vilmente, pues el trabajo no encomendado a menudo fastidia”. La Naturaleza, que siempre tiene oídos para el murmullo de la ignorancia detrás de ella, dijo con voz elocuente “¡cerrad la boca allí! Pronto hallaré, espero, la manera de libraros y eximiros de esto barullo; opino que debéis llamar a uno de entre toda la gente para que dé el veredicto por todas las aves”. Asintieron a esta conclusión todos los pájaros; y las aves de rapiña eligieron primero, por elección plena, al halcón macho para que definiera la sentencia de todos y la expresara a su modo; y lo llevaron ante la Naturaleza para presentarlo y ella lo aceptó de muy buen grado.

El halcón habló entonces de esta manera, “sería muy difícil probar con la razón quién ama mejor a esta noble águila hembra; porque cada uno tiene una respuesta tal que ninguna puede ser anulada con destreza; veo que los argumentos no son eficaces, por lo tanto me parece que debe haber batalla”. “¡Estamos listos!” exclamaron entonces estas águilas. “¡No, señores!” dijo aquél. “¡Si me permitís, obráis mal, mi discurso aún no está acabado! Pues, caballeros, no lo toméis a mal, os ruego, no puedo andar, como queréis, de ese modo; nuestra es la voz que tiene en manos el caso, y el dictamen de los jueces os debéis atener; ¡Por lo tanto, calma! Digo, según mi entendimiento, que me parece que el de mayor valor de caballerosidad, y el que más la ha practicado, el de mayor estado, el mas noble de sangre, sería el más adecuado para ella, si ella acepta; y de entre estos tres ella misma sabe, yo confío, cuál es, porque es fácil saberlo”. Las aves acuáticas pusieron sus cabezas juntas, y con breve deliberación, cuando cada uno hubo hecho su largo parloteo, dijeron verazmente, todas de acuerdo, cómo “con su exquisita elocuencia, la gansa, que tanto desea expresar nuestra necesidad, dirá nuestro discurso”, y rogaron “Dios la ayude”. Y por estas aves acuáticas entonces empezó a hablar la gansa, y en su cháchara dijo “¡silencio!
