PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE and CONTINUOUS (“DURATION FORM”) The present perfect simple, not to be mistaken for the Italian “ato prossimo” basically refers to a fact, an action (and its present results). We are not interested in the time when the action has taken place. We know that, in that case, an action (however recent) can be considered as “past” (thus to be expressed with the past simple) as soon as it has ended.

Come da schema, talora non siamo interessati soltanto all’azione, ma anche al “processo”, cioè al periodo di tempo durante il quale questa azione si svolge, dura (da qui “duration form”). In tal caso, ponendoci come osservatori in questo momento, prendiamo in considerazione lo svolgimento (ecco perché un tempo “continuous”) di questa azione da (since) o per (for) un determinato tempo. In questo caso utilizziamo il “present perfect continuous” (present perfect di “to be” + forma in –ing del verbo in questione): they have been playing for three hours Il present perfect continuous viene naturalmente utilizzato con I verbi “d’azione”, tra i quali ricordo vanno inclusi anche i “falsi verbi di stato”, come: sit, stand, wait (si compie comunque l’azione di rimanere seduti, seppure pressoché immobili), lie (lay, lain), rest, stay, ecc. Se la frase è negativa (se cessa cioè il “processo”) si usa il present perfect simple: they haven’t played for three hours Solo se la frase negativa lo è solo in apparenza, es: A-Hai giocato per due ore. B- Non è vero, non ho giocato per due ore.

You have been playing for two hours. It’s not true. I haven’t been playing for two hours.

…dove la frase negativa è la negazione di una affermazione (avviene quando si vuole contraddire, sottolineare il contrario, quando si è irritati, ecc.) si usa il present perfect continuous anche alla forma negativa Si usa il present perfect simple anche con verbi di “stato”, sentimento, pensiero, percezione (si fa la stessa distinzione nell’uso di questi verbi al presente, “simple” o “continuous”) tra i quali i verbi: to be, to have, to know (l’atto del conoscere si conclude nel momento stesso in cui si viene a conoscenza di qualcuno o di qualcosa), cosiccome to marry, to divorce (atti formali), to own e naturalmente to see (≠ look), to hear (≠ listen), to love, hate, like, ecc. We have been married since 1996. I have seen it for years. N.B. - Dovreste sapere che, se i verbi di cui sopra vengono utilizzati con una diversa connotazione (es. to see = incontrarsi con qualcuno), essi richiedono la forma continuata. Va da se', dunque, che possiamo dire: I've ben seeing her for two months = E' due mesi che esco con lei (vedi “continuous and noncontinuous verbs”).

Attenzione: Con i verbi di azione, che ammettono cioè la forma “continuata”, siano essi accompagnati da espressioni di durata (since o for) oppure no, è ammissibile anche la forma forma “semplice” che, come abbiamo visto per definizione stessa di “present perfect”, si usa per indicare un semplice dato di fatto. La forma continuata si usa quando si vuole enfatizzare l’azione, sottolineandone il prolungarsi, il suo protrarsi anche nel presente o, seppure essa sia conclusa, rimarcarne i chiari effetti. - Sandra has been decorating the house (le ci è voluto molto tempo, probabilmente non ha ancora terminato, dalla vernice sparsa ovunque si deduce ciò che ha fatto ) * oppure - Sandra has decorated the house (dato di fatto) * in questo caso si vogliono inoltre sottolineare gli effetti presenti, evidenti, dell’azione Con i verbi to live e to work entrambe le forme sono possibili ma, pur nella sostanziale analogia tra le due forme, si usa il present perfect simple, es. - I've worked here for ten months (oppure...for ten years [la durata effettiva ha poca importanza]) - se si vuole semplicemente indicare un dato di fatto; così espressa, la frase indica uno "stato", il "fatto" che io ho svolto un lavoro per un dato periodo di tempo. Si preferisce invece usare il present perfect continuous, es. - I’ve been working here for ten months - per indicare un significato inferenziale (nascosto nella frase). In questo caso, si potrebbe trattare di una situazione del genere: A - Put those papers on my desk! B - You don't have to tell me that - I've been working here for ten months, you know! ...l'impiegato ci tiene a far sapere che, lavorando in quell'ufficio da tempo, sa bene che cosa fare. Se trovassimo la frase: I've been living here for ten years, la forma continuata potrebbe voler inferire che (E' dieci anni che vivo qui...)...It's time I moved on (E' ora che vada a vivere da un'altra parte). Qui, più che il "fatto", si sottolinea la "durata" e/o l'implicazione che la situazione potrebbe cambiare [ecco perchè la definizione di "temporanea"]. In ogni caso (sempre e solo per i verbi di azione), nel dubbio, usate la forma “continuata”. E’ importante ricordare inoltre che: • • • •

La “duration form” è generalmente introdotta dalla domanda “how long” Spesso corrisponde ad un presente indicativo italiano: Studio da tre ore (=sto studiando, ho studiato per tre ore) I’ve been studying for three hours Se un’azione è interrotta o conclusa ma reiterata nel tempo, si usa il present perfect simple: We’ve visited this church every summer oppure I’ve told him three times Se il tempo è concluso, si usa il past simple: Ieri ho studiato per tre ore = Yesterday I studied for three hours

Quello che però avviene per un’azione tuttora in corso (esaminata dal suo “starting point” ad ora) può essere riferito anche al ato, cioè ad un’azione iniziata in un tempo precedente al momento ato in cui l’abbiamo presa in considerazione, es: Ieri alle tre avevo (già) studiato per due ore (alle tre erano già due ore che stavo studiando) Yesterday at three I had (already) been studying for two hours Analogamente, al futuro… Domani alle tre avrò (già) studiato per due ore Tomorrow at three I’ll (already) have been studying for two hours

Roger Woodham replies: since is used in a variety of different ways, both with the present perfect and with other tenses.  'since' as preposition When it is used as a preposition to introduce a date or a specific time in the past, it is normally used with present perfect and past perfect tenses. It refers to a period of time starting at a particular point in the past and continuing up till now (present perfect) or up until another point in the past (past perfect). Compare the following: I haven’t seen my younger brother since 14 July 1998. They’ve been on strike since the beginning of April and there’s no sign of it ending. Since as a conjunction sometimes combines with ever to make ever since. Since then refers to a particular point in time and ever since to a period of time. Which one we use depends on whether we want to focus attention on the point in time or on the continuing period of time. Compare the following: She left home in 1992 and hasn’t ed us since then. The company started losing money in 2002 and has been in serious decline since then. The company started losing money in 2002 and has been in serious decline ever since. I took my final exams five years ago and have been working as a doctor ever since.
