Volunteers Awarded for Dedication International Volunteer Day was celebrated in December to acknowledge the contributions made by volunteers enabling so many activities and services to be provided in our community. The Shire of East Pilbara held the ‘Thank a Volunteer’ awards for adults and youth. There are so many people in our community who work tirelessly to ensure that our community is a wonderful place to live, work and play with many very worthy volunteers nominated.

Newman R.S.L. President, Ian Thompson, was awarded East Pilbara Volunteer of the Year 2015. For the past few years, he has individually run the operations of the Newman RSL, with additional effort dedicated to the ANZAC centenary celebrations. Without Ian’s committed input behind the scenes there would not have been the remembrance ceremonies including but not limited to ANZAC Day, Vietnam Veterans Day and Remembrance Day.

It is only Ian’s dedication that has seen the Newman RSL survive and, in recent times, start to thrive with a recent influx of new ing following Ian’s proactive approach. Certificates of Appreciation were also awarded to the following Youth volunteers for their invaluable contribution in 2015: Sean Carroll, M Kumparu, Fraser Sache, Marley Yorkston and Ricky Barr

Shire of East Pilbara Councillor, Jay Ahmedi, officiated following which morning tea was served to the nominees and of the public who participated. The winner of Youth Volunteer of the Year was presented to Lachlan (Lachy) Thomas, a year nine student. As an ambassador for the V Swans Kicking Goals programme, Lachy committed to umpiring, coaching and mentoring younger . Lachy’s off-field behaviour set a great example.

Virtual Rottnest Channel Swim

The 2016 Virtual Rottnest Channel Swim will be held on 27 February this year at the Newman Aquatic Centre. This race emulates the gruelling annual ocean race between Cottesloe and Rottnest Island’s Thomson Bay. Attendance and results have been amazing in previous years with various categories in which to compete including individuals and teams of 2, 4 or 10. Come and the swimmers throughout the day.

Vandalism of Ethel Creek Street Park

What was once an extremely popular park for families and children’s parties has been rapidly ruined by anti-social and illegal behaviour following the building of toilets and park upgrades. The street and park suddenly became a thoroughfare resulting in graffiti, damage to seats, BBQ and bins, defacement of the new toilets, rubbish, and a place for drunken and inappropriate behaviour. Disability Access and Inclusion Committee Calling for Member Expressions of Interest

The Shire of East Pilbara is seeking expressions of Interest from local residents and agency/organisation representatives who are interested in ing a proposed East Pilbara Disability Access & Inclusion Committee (DAIC). Resident applicants must be Shire of East Pilbara residents and have a; • • •

Principal of South Newman Primary School is excited to welcome the first ever program from the Department of Education, especially for three year old Aboriginal children. Dave Thomas said the KindiLink play and learn sessions for parents and their three year old children would help them form a solid sense of belonging at school, even before they start Kindergarten. KindiLink, which will be run by 37 primary schools from Term 1, will work alongside families as they their children’s learning and help them successfully transition to school. “These sessions - for 6 hours per week - will make a real difference to the way your child learns when they reach us here at South Newman Primary School “ Dave Thomas said. “KindiLink will value and the learning that families provide.” The sessions will be run by a qualified teacher and Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer from the school. Ginny McMaster and Leonie Jones, both very experienced educators are looking forward to commencing the program.

Top 10 Backyard Chook Health Tips By Dr Lucy van der Weide, BSc BVMS Veterinarian, Newman Veterinary Hospital

1. Observe your chicken flock daily and get to know what is normal for your girls. This will help you identify health issues if they arise. One of the best ways to keep tabs on your chook’s health is to monitor their weight and body condition. To check the body condition of your hen, you must use your hand to feel over her breastbone. A healthy laying hen should have a good muscle cover over her keel or breastbone and the bone shouldn’t be too pointy. Another easy way to keep watch is to keep an eye on their droppings. 2. Kitchen scraps alone are not a sufficient diet for laying hens, young or growing. Feeding a diet predominately of kitchen scraps will result in calcium deficiency, protein deficiency, energy deficiency and often a vitamin A deficiency. 3. Nutrition is paramount in laying hens. Feed should be available at all times and hens should be fed a properly formulated diet for their life-stage. For hens ranging on lush grass, care should be taken to ensure that they still eat their laying pellets, as they will not get enough nutrients from the grass alone. It is also really important to ensure chicken pellets do not get wet as they can grow bacteria which is highly toxic. Especially in the Pilbara heat, don’t forget to ensure your hens have an adequate supply of clean, fresh, cool water available at all times. 4. One simple way to protect your hens’ health is to minimise the your hens have with wild birds. Wild birds can introduce disease by contaminating the feed or water supply.

5. Did you know that many medications and chemicals that you may use on your hens may come out in the eggs? Withholding periods (WHP) help us ensure there are not unsafe chemical residues in food we consume. Make sure you check that any medications or chemicals that you use on your chooks have a WHP. If in doubt check with your local veterinarian. No WHP may mean that the product is untested and possibly unsafe to use.

8. Our pet chooks are also susceptible to internal parasite. Hens with internal worm burdens may not always show obvious clinical signs, such as diarrhoea, weight loss or pale combs. Prevention is better than a cure. We stock a worming solution for hens that can be mixed in with the drinking water that has a nil egg WHP. One simple way to minimise transmission of worms, is regular removal of faeces from your chicken coop.

6. The most common health issues for hens providing their nutritional needs are met, are external parasites. In fact, mites, lice and fleas are common external parasites in pet poultry. They can be brought in by newly introduced hens, wild birds and even rodents. External parasites can be extremely difficult to eradicate. Left untreated external parasites can cause anaemia where the body’s red blood cell level gets too low, poor weight gain, reduced egg production and even death.

9. If you have a clucky hen (when you don’t have roosters!) who will sit in her nest all day, it is best to intervene and get her back to her normal routine. She may compromise her health, not taking in enough water or feed, making her vulnerable to parasites, malnourishment and emaciation. Get her out of the nest during the day, and encourage her to spend time with her flock.

7. Stickfast fleas can be a real problem in Newman. Control strategies for stickiest flea infections include using Maldison poultry dust that has a nil WHP. Unfortunately many effective treatments do not have a documented egg WHP. Treatment is required weekly of all birds and their housing until you have completely controlled the infestation. This is so you can break the fleas’ lifecycle. You can also suffocate fleas with vaseline. Prevention methods for Stickfast flea include cleaning and disinfecting your poultry house, using concrete or plastic materials in coop design and roosting birds at night. Stickfast fleas can also be transmissible to your pet dogs and cats! Spot-on flea treatments like Frontline and Revolution will help protect your pet and treat infections.

10. Unfortunately, chickens can be susceptible to infectious disease. Over the past 12 months Newman has had quite a few cases of Marek’s disease that is a nasty herpes virus of poultry. Commercial flocks are vaccinated against this disease but many backyard girls miss out. Young birds may get infected but may not show signs of disease until some months later. There are many different syndromes and clinical presentations of this disease. Most commonly we have seen paralysis and death in young birds. Older hens may develop tumours due to the virus. If you are experiencing unusual deaths in your flocks or have chickens that are unwell, please feel free to speak to the clinic for advice.

Raising HOPE Ministries’ Hampers By Mel Nelson

Raising HOPE Ministries took part in giving Christmas hampers in 2015. In November, the team placed four Christmas donation boxes out into the heart of Newman community. The boxes gave the opportunity for the community to participate in donating non-perishable food or gifts to families and individuals during the festive season for the hampers. The donations received were collected weekly, wrapped by the team of volunteers at Raising HOPE Ministries in Christmas wrapping, covered in layers of decorative ribbon and filled with non-perishable food and gifts. The response from the local community was overwhelming. Over fifteen beautiful well-loved hampers were prepared. The joy of giving was well worth it, to see lives touched at Christmas with love and care through the hands of generosity. A week before Christmas the team distributed the hampers to EPIS, World Vision, Department of Children's Services and PAMS to share hope to those families and individuals locally and remote, while Raising HOPE was still reaching those in Newman.

Thank you to everyone who donated and gave hope this Christmas. N.S.H.S. Success Newman Senior High School gained recognition in 2015 for fostering budding entrepreneurs through the WA $20 Boss Awards. The in-school challenge provided students with $20 start-up money to plan, budget and market their own business idea over a month. N.S.H.S. was awarded the school with the highest average profit per student, high levels of student participation, as well as a high contribution to their local community. A representative for this programme from NAB stated that it has “helped young participants gain hands-on experience in skills like project management, budget, planning and business that will kick-start

their preparation for the world of work.” “Most Enterprising School: Newman Senior High School Students at Newman High School focused on the unique challenges of living in a remote mining town in regional Western Australia. They wanted to offer goods and services not readily available in the local context, this included services for time poor adults and young people who struggled to find things to do outside of school hours. In total, 37 students participated in the program and created 11 enterprises. These included running a skateboard and scooter competition, dog walking and washing, a car wash and childcare for children too old for traditional services but too young to be left alone. They delivered a total profit of close to $2,000.” Other schools’ winning projects included beauty products, and sock animals. Newman Senior High School students further made themselves proud when the North West Telegraph reported that thirteen NW students were among the State’s top secondary schools in the public sector. Two of these included the very dedicated N.S.H.S.’s Lindsay Fumhanda and Jordan Sashse. Congratulations!

The East Pilbara BMX Club has been busy over the Christmas period. Practice nights continue at the club on Saturdays between 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm. Meet Gerry Parsons Gerry Parsons is a re-elected member of the Shire of East Pilbara’s Council for the South Ward. Gerry Parsons and her family arrived in Newman over sixteen years ago with a contract to manage the local swimming pool. They came with two young children from Wickepin in the Wheatbelt. When Andrew Parsons was flown up for his initial interview with the Shire in 1999, he had come the day after a cyclone had ed through. Gerry’s initial advice was to “make sure when looking at houses to pick out the ones that looked like they hadn’t been flooded.” Gerry works for the APA Group, maintainers of the natural gas pipeline, and has done so for the past fifteen years. Having dedicated much time in volunteer capacities around Newman, Gerry has been the secretary of the junior soccer and junior football, the President of tee ball and sat on many of the junior sporting committees. She continues to umpire tee ball, and sits on the management committees of the NCCI, Turf Club, Newman’s recreation centre, and the Newman Day Care Centre which she points out is having its 30th anniversary this year. She has also been the Catholic Church Secretary for over 15 years.

Phuket Cup 2015 Results U13 State Regional Players - Seth Smith and Hamish Thomas In the first week of December the last two of our Newman NJSA State Regional Representatives for 2015 travelled to Phuket to take part in the 2015 Phuket International Youth Soccer Cup as part of the U13 Walkabout FC squad. Selection was based on 2014 Country Week Performance and 2015 Country Tryout Camp held by Football West. The U13 WA Regional squad did extremely well this year making it through to the Grand Final, unfortunately missing out on the Cup going down 3-1 in the Final but it was an awesome effort by the team and our boys in making it through to the final. Seth Smith had an exceptional tournament, played a big part in the team’s success, also

Gerry continues to live in Newman with her husband, Andrew, and children Zachary (now 22), McKenzie (now 16), and son Harrison (13). Their son, Harrison, was born during their time here. The have a rescued dog from SAFE that feasts on their outdoor settings and pool tables, along with a cat, and an Axylotyl “called of course Lottie”. They usually spend their annual leave travelling for their children’s sport which brings them much joy. These travels have taken them to Tokyo and QLD for baseball, Singapore for soccer, and next year to China for soccer too. She jokes that she is “hoping one of them make it famous so they can their parents in their old age.” Gerry enjoys being on the Shire of East Pilbara’s Council and feels she brings a younger perspective to the table. Many people from the sporting sector of the community regularly ask for her assistance. She enjoys being involved with and ing the children and youth. In her capacity as Councillor, she has been working with Landcorp on the steering committee for the town square development in addition to other activities ing Newman. BHP Billiton Iron Ore is calling for applications for its Community Grants Program, which seek to help local organisations expand their services and upgrade their facilities or purchase new equipment. Projects that produce positive outcomes in the following areas will be considered for : sport and recreation, community services or community events. Grants will be available bi-monthly with applications closing on the following dates: 1 February 2016, 1 April 2016 and 1 June 2016.
